Lem exits his wagon with a small satchel and says I had these for an emergency, seems we have one now as he opens it.

Ending his battle rage, Menrozzar's claws turn back into hands. Gripping the flail and breathing heavily, he lets out a mighty laugh and says, "That was invigorating! A good battle to get the blood flowing." Menrozzar surveys the battlefield, his flail resting on his shoulder, not quite noticing the wounds that still plagued him.

Kyli takes one and downs it and watches as her wound continues to mend itself. The enemy was routed but still she was upset that she had taken so much abuse. Next time she would be more careful.

Menrozzar laughs before saying, "I like your style, Lem. Let's gather them up."

He will then take a CLW potion and drink it before assisting in looting the bodies.

Pulling a spare piece of cloth from his pack, Gavin ties it tightly around the hard wound in his leg. Even with his allies healing effects, Gavin can barely walk and hobbles back to the wagon. He graciously reaches out for one of the Curative potions. "Much obliged sir, seems I've earned my keep with a bit of blood. And yes, their arms, while not of great quality, should still fetch a few crowns."

As the potion slips down his throat, Gavin feels it's restorative blessing pulse through his body. "nectar of the Gods, that was a potent mix. I'll still be sore tomorrow, but Brandaboris be blessed, I'll be no worse for wear."


Menrozzar and Gavin, with Lem's help go through the bodies picking anything that seems of any value.

    Kyli made one last round of the wagons. Once she is sure they are safe-ish, "We are in the clear. Let's get moving." she urged.


    Come on! shouts Lem as Dagor, Magor and Bagor whip the horses to start moving along the road. He turns to Kyli and says You're tougher than you look, those wounds would have killed most men
    Malachi smiles at Kleth as the wagons move from the battlefield Those creatures shouldn't have been a problem, yet they almost killed me and I put you all at risk, I know you're a religious man my friend, and I owe it to the Morninglord to improve myself to stand in the way of evil, you surely understand...

    Menrozzar hopped up onto the back of the first wagon, smiling, saying, "That is why one trains for battle. To be able to take wounds without falling, and to allow the rush and exhilaration to pulse in your veins."

    Kleth takes the potion and tucks it into Kyli's pouch grinning, "My friend, Menro is plenty strong, this is a potion that improves strength. Its is best served utilized by you".

    The Wizard nods to Malachi, "I certainly do understand my friend. My entire family, for generations, have been servants of the Gods. They are demanding Masters but among the most pious I have known, such people demand more of themselves than the Gods ever could or would. I am sure you will do better next time, we all will. I just hope next time is tomorrow as Azuth knows much of my magical might has been spent this day".


    The party travels for the rest of the day without any incident, arriving just before dusk at a small village by the name Defler. Lem says Alright, I'll try to get us a place to sleep in the common room of that tavern over there. You'll have to take turns watching the caravan nonetheless, I don't think leaving it alone is a good idea.

    The tavern is about 100' from the field where the caravan has stopped

    Thank you. Kyli said to the gift from Kleth in an attempt to be gracious though she was perplexed at his comment. Evidently the mage thinks I need help. It was true, I did put in a poor showing in that last engagement. These thoughts continued to trouble her until they arrived in the village for the evening.

    As the caravan comes to a stop, Gavin slowly climbs down from the seat he had taken on the back of the rear wagon, his pony tied on to trail behind. He walked with a definite limp and gingerly tested him recovering leg. "Aye, a watch makes sense. Given there are six of us, I would think three watches of two people each. Agreed?"

    Malachi and Oryx take the first watch, same as the previous night. Soon after the others have left they see a shady man go by the street behind the tavern three times in barely ten minutes.

    I think something's up with that man. I'll go investigate and you stay here, shall I? says Malachi

    Meanwhile inside the tavern
    The tavern has a decent selection of ales and warm food. Lem relieved to have a roof over his head has rented all the rooms so everyone can have his own bed for the night. He pays for drinks for the whole party and asks them to sit down with him.
    So tell me friends, have you faced creatures such as those hobgoblins often before? Usually when beset by bandits I run or pay up and it was amazing to see the tide of battle turn so quickly back and forth! says the young man.
    Magor naps sitting at the table, while Bagor and Dagor turn to listen to the bard playing the fiddle at the back of the main room.

    "I did encounter them in my travel from Chessenta. They fight well, but expect their ambush to be effective. When found out, they are typically easy to defeat."

    "My first encounter with them. In my homeland Orcs and Half-Drow are the main problems. I did encounter some Goblins and several nomad Barbarians on my way north. With the Barbarians I parleyed with the Goblins, a show of magic was enough to drive them away.

    I must admit the showing of these larger cousins of the Goblins was impressive. Not quite as strong as Orcs but tactically superior. The Orcs probably would have fought to the death".

    First time for me. They bite a little harder than I thought they would. The pain of her wound was still fresh in her mind.


    A few minutes have passed since Malachi went after the misterious man when a cry of pain is heard even inside the tavern. Every patron stands silent looking into their mugs.

    Menrozzar ceases his laughter at the sound of a cry of pain and stands, hefting his flail. He goes to exit the tavern to check on Malachi and Oryx, as well as the wagon.

    Gavin had been busy drowning the pain of his wounds in a rather large pint of ale when they were asked about their encounters with hobgoblins, and so he had given the wagon master's question little consideration. He was just starting to approach that point where the ale dulls the sharp ache when the horrid scream pierced the night air. Jumping to his feet, he darted for the door, ready for whatever horror the night sky might present...


    As Menrozzar and Gavin leave the tavern they see the few streets completely deserted. Moving towards the alley to the side of the tavern from where the cry came they are face with a dantesque view. Malachi's body lays on a pool of his own blood, a red circle drawn around it. His mouth wide open is filled with a bundled piece of parchment, and the smell of clove lingers in the air.

    Oryx shakes someone awake and shouts, "Summin's happened to Malachi!" Then runs off into the direction of where Malachi went.

    When he see's Malachi he gasps.

    "Malachi! Where's that bastard and looks around for the man he saw earlier."

    Kyli follows the others out into the street. It seems this simple little guard mission was not going to be so simple after all.

    Menrozzar grips his flail even tighter upon seeing the holy warrior of Lathander lying on the ground, dead. He notices Oryx looking about for the man he saw earlier, then realizes that if Malachi is dead, and Oryx is over here, no one's watching the wagons. Menrozzar takes off at a sprint straight for them, in case this is all a distraction to get at the silks.

    Gavin dives down toward the paladin's side, his eyes wide with shock. "Damnit man, I know I gave you hell for being an uptight, stodgy nuisance, but that doesn't mean you get to go and die on us!" Gavin grabs for his wand, and trusting in whatever god may have blessed it with power, unleashes its holy might, hoping that it might just save their noble friend.

    As his allies exit the Inn so too does Kleth albeit a bit slower.

    He pulls from his pack a lantern, as he reaches the alley he sees what has happened and grimaces. He then lights the lantern and begins scanning the alley for clues as to which way the assailants may have gone.

    Despite Gavin's desperate attempts Malachi's body stays lumped on the ground, his soul having left it already.

    Perception DC 15:
    A few feet from Malachi's body behind some half rotten wooden boxes is his sword, it's partially corroded as if some kind of caustic or acid substance had covered it.

    As Menrozzar turns the corner he sees the caravan standing where they left it and two shadowy figures approaching it from the other side. He can see the horses feel disturbed by their presence and start neighing

    "That bloody bastaard. When we get me 'ands on 'im, imma ring 'is scrawny neck." Oryx says, his anger making his dwarven accent even thicker than normal.

    "Sylvester, didja see where 'e went?"

    Oryx says as Menrozzar runs past him. "Where ya go.." Oryx begins then a light dawns in his head. "The caravans!" He says then runs after Menrozzar.

    Menrozzar shouts, "Thieves in the night!" and charges straight towards the two, yelling wordlessly.

    "Bloody 'ells" Oryx says running not far behind Menrozzar.

    Kleth yells out, "Beware my friends they use some sort of caustic acid substance!"

    Kleth steps into the street considering using magic upon the figures but... what if it is a case of mistaken identity and these are just two men passing by? His doubts cause him to pause.


    As they see the charging Chessenthan the two shadowy figures jump down from the caravans an unsheathe wicked looking serrated swords. Now that he is closer Menrozzar can see they're dressed in purple cloth but wearing breastplate under it, there's something off with their faces.
    They say something in a weird and gutural language.

    Kyli stood in stunned silence, providing a somber honor guard to Malachi until her attention was ripped away by the sounds of shouted challenges and battle. "An attack!" she thought, too late. She followed the others and positioned herself to enter when she could.

    Kyli will double move to get within 30 for next round.

    Menrozzar shouts, "They wear armor and have bared steel!" The warrior then charges straight at one of them.

    Cursing that the divine blessings have found no hold on the body of Malachi, Gavin jumps to his feet and rushes off to join battle alongside his comrades. Drawing his blades, he lets out a cry for blood!

    He chants words in the language of magic, firing a spell at the Shadowy foe farthest from Menro.

    Oryx pulls out his quarterstaff and twirls it in his right hand and lets it slide past the halfway point before catching it with the other hand, wielding it like a bat with both hands he charges at the other figure and gives a mighty swing with both hands at the shadowed figure's head.

    Then just before the enemy retaliates, Oryx calls forth the earth below for protection as a slab of stone comes between them'

    DESCRIPTION

    A 1-inch-thick slab of stone springs up from the ground, interposing itself between you and an opponent of your choice. The stone shield provides you with cover from that enemy until the beginning of your next turn, granting you a +4 bonus to Armor Class and a +2 bonus on Reflex saving throws. If the opponent’s attack misses you by 4 or less, the attack strikes the shield instead. The stone shield has hardness 8 and 15 hit points. If the shield is destroyed, the spell ends and the shield crumbles away into nothingness. Spells and effects that damage an area deal damage to the shield.

    You cannot use this spell if you are not adjacent to a large area of earth or stone such as the ground or a wall.

    Oryx now has an AC of 21

    Both Menrozzar and Oryx strike at their targets but the creatures seem to shake most of the strength behind the attacks. Kleth magic seems more effective as the creature it hits looks angrily towards the wizard.
    Now that they see them clearly their bloated faces become evident, their eyes are milky white and a spit trickle falling from their mouths mixed with blood is visible.
    The creatures make a weird gesture, similar to a smile by something that doesn't understand what a smile is and swing their serrated swords but Menrozzar deftly avoids the hit and the one against Oryx strikes against his stone shield and fails to wound the dwarf.

    Menrozzar's eyes narrow as the creature seems to shake off his blow, then decides to redouble his efforts to smash the creatures, while also shouting, "Kleth, they have bloated faces and milky white eyes! Can you possibly identify them?"

    His mace attack whiffs completely past the creature.

    Is this how every battle is going to go? Hit, nat 1, hit, nat 1? Cause if so, it's gonna be real annoying.
