I assume you mean eggs, not eyes... XD

Sevak wryly thinks to himself that what he may need most right now is just a couple days of uninterrupted quiet as he looks at Paq's find. He thinks it is a bit small for three of them... perhaps he shall supplement it himself as they travel.

He keeps such thoughts to himself, however. "If we can find dry enough wood to make little smoke, we might risk a fire in the day," he states. "Firelight will not be so obvious now."

He sets about seeing if he can find said dry wood.

Oops

It doesn't take long for Sevak to find some dry wood and they soon start cooking the small clutch of eggs. The smell of cooking breakfast soon causes Hyo Soon to rouse.

She clumsily exits her hanging shelter, all dressed (but hair tousled) and packed. behind her the shelter starts to weather away almost instantly. She sniffs the air and says, 'Breakfast?'

Sevak nods in response. "A light breakfast, yes. We will forage for more along the way."

He pauses, then asks, "I trust you slept well?"

The woman shrugs, 'As well as can be expected in the field. I already miss my bed."

'Amen." Paq dully echoes, eating an egg, shell and all (cooked, of course!).

Hyo Soon scans the meager breakfast, shrugs again and eats asking, 'What is our plan? You are more experienced in such things."

Sevak grins just a little bit at the city-dwellers' distress. He felt he slept better without walls around him.

His smile faded. Were it not for the dreams...

He shakes himself slightly at Hyo Soon's question. "Paq will scout ahead, and we will make our way as stealthily as we can to where you think your item is hidden. With luck we will find it without too much trouble, after which we will use Paq's report to plan an approach against the bandits. While I would prefer to convince them that their own self-interest lies in protecting rather than preying on trade, experience has taught me to not expect reason from bandits."

He sighs. "With luck, we will find a way forward that will not require too much violence. But the situation of the farmers on the other side of the river demands action in this matter."

Hyo soon considers this and says, 'I am surprised a ratfolk is passing on the chance to plunder a vault."

Paq merely grins and says, 'Anything of value, I'll just steal off of you later." he turns to Sevak and says, 'When do we spilt up? When we enter the city or before? Where do we meet up? How long do we wait before having to bravely rescue the other in the nick of time?"

Sevak shakes his head slightly at Paq's joke... at least, he hopes it is a joke.

To his questions, he answers, "Shortly before we enter, I think. I would prefer if you scouted just ahead of us to make certain we do not blunder into any sentries that may be posted at the city's perimeter. As for meeting up..."

He takes out the borrowed map and picks a likely-looking location a little ways back from the bridge. "What do you think of here? I would think our business should not take too long, so we could meet in the evening as the sun gets low... and hope there is no need for rescue."

Your choices for a location are...a empty space that looks like a park, a ruined old library or an old manor home. I like to spice things up. Is the meeting place on your side of the river or the other?

Paq nods, "We should reach the outer ruins by mid-morning if we hurry. Are we crossing the river here or are we going to chance the bridge? It is sure to be watched."

Hyo Soon says, "Yes, we will have to cross. I have no idea about the bandits, but the old treasure vault is on the other side of the city."

How about the old library, on the other side of the river?

Sevak pauses a moment to think. "It is best we cross sooner rather than later, then," he says. "Hyo Soon, is there anything you can do to help us remain unseen while we cross?"

Works for me

Hyo Soon looks at Sevak, Paq and herself, and then nods, 'For a short time, I could. I can create a Sphere of Invisibility ten feet around."

Paq considers, 'if we make close on a log or something, we could do it. This far out, I doubt they'd see us either way."

Both nod and quickly finish the meager meal. Hyo Soon is particular remarks she is still hungry but she bears it well. The wizard apparently has low standards for 'field work'.

They split up to find a log or something suitable to cross the river as the sun slowly rises.

Sevak finds a a large log and drags it back tot he campsite by the river. It is birch and will float quite well. Soon Paq and Hyo Soon return, each carrying logs of their own.

"We have any rope?" the ratfolk asks, piling the logs together.

"I do, yes," Sevak says, pulling a coil of fine, silk rope out of his pack. "A rougher rope would be more appropriate for this task, but it will serve."

I'd assume Sevak would know how to tie some good knots with his Survival skills?

Yeah, I always assume Adventurers can do that sort of thing

It doesn't take long for them to turn the collection of logs into a studry little raft. Hyo Soon is not very technical minded but her magic, int he form of Mage Hand makes things go much faster and Paq reveals a knowledge of ropes and knots that Sevak is more then a bit wary of.

Soon it sits on the edge of the muddy bank, ready to be pushed into the water.

"Well, that wasn't so bad." Hyo Soon says.

"Let's make sure it floats first." Paq says darkly, but there is no real chance it sinks. It isn't a boat but a simple raft.

"I would worry more for its stability and its ability to hold together, but I think it shall be fine," Sevak states. "Come, let us get it into the water, and then Hyo Soon can cast her spell and we can cross under cover of invisibility."

They push it awkwardly into the water, taking care to handle it gently. As they get into the water, all clamber on board, feet and legs dangling into the muddy water. Light sparkles off the surface, dazzling everyone.

"Ok, here we go." Hyo Soon mutters a few words and waves her hands.

Nothing happens but she beams and says, "It is working, trust me."

Paq looks at Sevak with narrow eyes and says, 'Is it?"

Sevak had no idea how to tell, but he saw no reason for Hyo Soon to be lying.

"It allows us to see one another while others cannot?" he asks. "I had not known that would be so."

Hyo Soon nods, 'It operates at the sphere level. Since we are all squeezed inside, it has no effect between us. IF you fall off though, you'll lose sight of us."

"Don't fall off then." Paq says darkly.

Paddling slowly they work the raft right into the stream. As before the muddy river's current is stronger then it looks and it is soon pulling them downstream, faster then they'd have liked. Sevak is glad they chose to cross far upstream of the city. Despite the spell (hopefully) surrounding them, it was better not to risk it.

It is hard work, fighting the current. Sevak is sweaty and sore by the time they reach the middle of the concourse. He sees downstream the river begins to be dotted with islands, some very small patches of grass, but others large enough for groves of trees. Then, past the islands....Sevak sees Kon-Luan for the first time.

It was once a great city, Sevak can tell instantly, the home of tens of thousands. It sweeps south on both sides of the river and he see traces of many spans crossing the muddy expanse. It had been much bigger then his home city in Nagajor. But that had been long ago.

Of all the bridges, all but one seems to have tumbled into the water below. Huge towers dot the skyline, most crumbling and tottering. Huge, half-collapsed domes open to bright sky like giant amphitheaters for the gods. Sevak notes the traces of a massive network of docks and quays at the water's edge, but are known a water-logged ruin of fallen stones and silting mud.

But what surprises and comforts the druid most, is the greenery. The entire ruined city, from crumbling outer wall, to tallest remaining tower, is covered in a thick growth of bushes, vines and trees. Even at this distance he can see plants creating a fuzzy border on every shape, softening the lines of the fallen stone and hiding the worst of the ancient damage. Flocks of birds wheel high overhead, attracted by the many nesting sites.

Hope I did it justice.

I'd say so. :D

Sevak pauses for a brief moment to take in the view. He hadn't realized just how large Kon-Luan had been. But he notes with some pleasure the growth of nature reclaiming it. It surprises him, somewhat, that it had progressed so far--if it had been abandoned with the fall of the empire, it had not been so long ago in the march of time that men had lived in it. How swiftly did nature re-establish its primacy!

...would the same happen to the works of the Naga, if in some future time they fell?

He pushes such thoughts from his mind and redoubles his efforts to cross the river. Here, perhaps, was a city he could feel at home in. At the least, it would provide hiding places for them as they moved.

...and hiding places for watchers. He would have to ask Hyo Soon if she could cast this invisibility spell again.

If this were a live game I'd throw a few giant fish at you, maybe a sand bar or two. But in a PBP game, best to keep things moving unless they are plot related. As for the trees, it has been over 100 years since the fall of the Lung Wa Empire. But yes, it does seem a bit overly green...*mystery*

They are all soaking wet when they reach the other side, between paddling, sweat and dunking under the surface to cool off. They are all a bit short-tempered and tired as they reach the far bank and feel mud under them again. The sun is directly overhead now, a blazing orb of bright yellow. Midday and hot, and swarms of biting insects surrounded them, buzzing loudly.

Yeah, I appreciate keeping things moving a bit. But don't feel like you can't throw in the *occasional* unrelated problem. Well, I guess you already did. :D Sevak wasn't really thinking that it was unusual how fast greenery had overtaken the city, more kind of a 'how short-lived the works of men' type of thought.

Being too reptilian to sweat, Sevak appreciates the water on his scales, and it perhaps the least short-tempered of the little group by the time they land. Still, he is glad to reach the shore... for he is also the stronger than his companions, which meant he was providing the majority of their thrust across the river.

"The insects will be less away from the water," Sevak comments. "How long will your spell last, Hyo Soon? We should be under cover when it wears off."

I had the same thing in mind, but then Sevak inspired me and gave me an idea. It may come to nothing but we'll see

Hyo Soon, shakes her head, water flying off her hair. She looks a bit red, 'Um, it is already gone. It took us longer to cross the river then I thought. About three-fourths of the way over the spell ended."

Paq stares open mouthed at her, then turns to Sevak, "Some team player we got here."

The female wizard, towering over the ratfolk barks, "Well it isn't my fault I underestimate the time. I didn't want to worry you by telling you we might have been visible. Besides, we are still miles away."

Paq, still grumbling, is the first under the cover of the small strip of trees lining the bank. 'So, our trip into Po li was short." the ratfolk remarks then adds, as Hyo Soon and Sevak enter the foliage, 'Shall I go scout on my own then?"

Paq nods, his tail whipping side to side. he leans close to Sevak, voice low, 'Keep your eye on her."

He straightens and bows to the female wizard. He even takes her hand in a mockery of a courtly bow. Hyo Soon is so startled she says nothing as Paq grins and takes a step back, eyes glittering, 'May your robbery go well. I do find the dead usually have poor guards. I wish you luck."

With barely a rustle, the ratfolk is lost among the short brush and thin trees.

Hyo Soon lets out a sigh, "What a strange little man..." suddenly she pats one of her many pockets. With a look of surprise she digs into it and pulls out an..empty hand.

"He took my scroll of Cat's Grace, the little thief!" She shouts into the now empty greenery, "Plauge bringer!"

She turns back to Sevak, face red, shaking her head, 'Honestly, I don't know why you travel with such a...person." The wizard is obviously struggling not to use stronger language.

He sighs. "One that will get him killed if he does not stop. It is something I am... working on, you might say. But it seems inappropriate for me to condemn the behavior of one to whom I owe so much."

Hyo Soon sniffs, but she reluctantly adds, "Such is often the way of friends. I suppose he may need that scroll more then us."

She turns toward the barely visible city, hidden by tree branches. 'Do we have a plan other then simple approach? How do you intend to climb the walls? What if we see guards, do we fight or flee?" The wizard actually ticks this list off on her fingers, as if planning a shipping trip.

"Given the state of the city, the walls may not be much of an obstacle," Sevak replies. Gaaah, why doesn't Sevak have any points in Climb? Oh, yeah, because he only gets five skill points a level... "We will approach carefully and attempt to remain unseen while we search for the best place to enter. We will want to avoid gates and the areas close to the bandit headquarters."

"I would prefer to remain unseen by guards, but if we see them I think it better to avoid battle for now. I have little hope for convincing the bandits to change their ways, but killing them will hardly make a good first impression." He sighs. "Not that I have any idea of how to approach them..."

Should have played a rogue. Paq has lots of ranks in Climb

Hyo Soon shrugs, "Well, they are bandits. Would they not respect power?"

The tall wizard follows Sevak into the trees, as they head downstream toward the city. The way is not easy, as they try to remain as hidden as possible from the walls that slowly come into view. Dodging from tree to tree, from log to log takes time, and Sevak detects not race of Paq or anyone else. All awhile, above them, the walls loom every closer.

Finally they reach the edge of the trees, and peer out.

A few yards away rises the outer wall, looking like a great moss-covered limestone boulder. Vines and plants cover it all, with only a few bare patches of rock revealing the stony heart beneath. Here and there it is crumbling, but even the largest rents still end twenty feet above them.

Besides straight climbing the wall Which could be done, it is covered with plants and is quite rocky, Sevak sees two other approaches. Off to the right, away from the river, her sees an old postern gate door. The gate has long rusted away and all that remains is a black hole flanked by trees.

Off to the left, the wall ends near the riverside, and there is a small ledge between river mud and wall that probably once was guarded by fortresses but now lies bare. However, it loops tightly around the wall and Sevak can not see far.

make sense?

Apparently so. :D A rogue-type *would* make for a fun solo character.

"Perhaps." Sevak shrugs slightly. "Perhaps it is a good sign that I do not understand the mentality of bandits."

He considers the options for a while after they scout the wall. Looking at Hyo Soon, he whispers, "The door is likely watched, and I am a better swimmer than climber, if aught goes wrong. I say we go by the river, though slowly lest we stumble across a guard."

Hmm... in a way I'm kind of nervous about Sevak feeling too strong, but... given how he's been up until now, apparently that's not a problem. XD I'd have to debate as to what his second class would be. It'd probably be something like Ranger or Slayer--something with enough outdoorsy-feeling to fit the theme, but with a better attack bonus and more skill points.

Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Hyo Soon shrugs, "You are the outdoorsman. I will follow you."

Together they move along the green wall, venturing close to the edge of the river. The wall is crumbling here, covered with rich plants, enjoying the cool weta rea near the river's edge.

The ground turns muddy, filled with small stones and long-fallen bits of wall. The water is covered with floating plants and high reeds, but Sevak can detect the barest hint of a path leading around. Obviously someone comes this way sometimes, but is seems rarely used.

As they are crossing a narrow point between wall and river, walking single file, Sevak hears something. It sounds like...voices coming from the water, cackling evil voices in an unknown tongue. Then laughter.

Even as Hyo Soon frowns, leaning toward the water, the river surface explodes. A brightly colored creature, small and stout with many legs, erupts at Sevak.

Surprise Round bite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

It narrowly misses and lands on the bank, hissing at the ex-druid. It looks like a cross between a frog and an enlongated otter.

"Oh, a voonith!" Hyo Soon, with more then a trace of excitement, as if this were an interesting creature in a classroom.

He still has only a vague idea of how much magic he gets a day, but it seems to him like it's each spell once a day, which means he needs to conserve them.

His swing ineffective and the threat of sentries coming to investigate the cry hanging over him, Sevak sheathes his blade and backs up slightly, drawing on the power within himself to conjure a bolt of flame.

Going for scorching ray.
Touch attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 4, 5) = 15

Sevak feels a well of power within him surge and the air around him heats. At the same time he can feel the dark shadow of the Naga on him. Then the flame appears and lances out at the voonith, striking it hard.

It yelps in pain, reeling back as a burn mark erupts on his brightly colored hide. It growls but before it can do anything Hyo Soon follows suit with the same spell.

Touch Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Touch Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 2) = 6
Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 4) = 15

Her spell splits into two lines of superheated air and lash at the creature. The entire creature is wreathed in flame and it shrieks loudly. With a darting motion it turns and jumps into the water, sending up a splash. In a moment the water swirls and it is gone, hidden among the reeds and mudbanks.

Hyo Soon looks a bit shaken and says, 'they are larger then the textbooks described them. I'll have to tell my professors." her voice wobbles a bit.

Hah, what interesting rolls Hyo Soon got there. :D

Sevak shudders slightly. He had thought this magic clean of the Dark One's taint. Had he been wrong?

There was no time for hesitation now, however. "Fortunately it did not harm either of us. We should move quickly, however, before a bandit comes to investigate the noise."

He moves forward, trying to stay quiet while listening for any signs of movement other than themselves... and while making certain Hyo Soon stays with him.

Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31

They move forward, rounding the outer wall. The area they walk into is an overgrown series of old docks and warehouses, the gray stones covered with moss and other wet loving plants. here and there a willow tree arches over the water, trailing limbs into the muddy river.

It provides good cover and Sevak and Hyo Soon soon moves into the waist-high weeds.

Ahead Sevak hears a voice coming closer. 'Anything, Ko?"

Then a Tian man enters the clearing, looking rough and dirty. He is bearing a short sword at his belt, wearing leather armor and an unlit torch in the other. He walks right past Sevak and Hyo Soon and heads for the water's edge.

'Bet you it was that voonith again.." he calls back behind him to the other, still out of sight person.

Sevak gives silent thanks that the bandit did not see them the first time. He quietly gestures at Hyo Soon to stay quiet and lay low, while doing so himself.

Stealth: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 Well, it could have been worse...

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

The man stiffens as Hyo Soon steps on a twig, snapping it. He straightens and turns around, peering into the greenery where the nagaji hides.

'Well, see anything? Boss told us to be on the lookout... the unseen voice shouts from up ahead but the bandit waves and says, hissing, 'Quiet. I think I heard something."

He pulls his sword and slowly begins moving into the area where Sevak and Hyo Soon are hiding. The female wizard looks nervously at Sevak, obviously asking him what do to.

Does Sevak's spellcasting make any sound? I'm not clear on how like normal spellcasting it is.

No, it is silent. The horn of fog would also be silent, in my ruling

Oh, would it? I thought it was rather loud... hmmm...

Sevak briefly puts a finger to his lips, then reaches into his pack and pulls out his enchanted horn. Gently, so as to not make noise, he blows into it, and fog begins to billow out. He suspects the bandit will know it is not natural... but he expects that will make him nervous about what sort of magic is afoot. With luck, he will conclude it is not worth his life to investigate...
