Oh yes! I love sea faring games. I have a skull and shackles ranger with the warden archetype I never got to use that I can easily adapt to this. I am posting from that alias.
I will have the altered character in about an hour or so.
"A good question my friend. My former ally and longtime partner Captain Rojerick told me he believed it to be known as Profession (sailor). I think. Never made much sense to me though."
What skill should I have to be able to read lips? Or I can abandon the deaf thing for a different curse it isn't totally built into the character yet.
I feel it would be linguistics as the character would need to know the language. Perception would be added depending on who you are trying to read.
Of note, you may want to reconsider the deafness because when we get into different situations you are not always going to be able to look at everyone to see what they are saying. Especially during battle.
It occur to me that lip reading would simply be an erm skill based off linguistic, that is like another language if it needed a foundation in rules at all. However isn't it pretty much assumed that since he has been deaf for awhile he can lip read his known languages? Whether or not he can see someone's lips moving would be more like a perception check just like checking ifyou can hear someone (probably with a -5 penalty or something?). That said I would personally pick a different curse, something less drastic, but that is me :).
Originally when I read through them most of them seemed a little weak and not particularly appropriate. Having now written the background I like the idea of him being haunted by his real parents who are trying to help but really get in the way. which would explain why it becomes a benefit latter. So I'll make the switch particularly because I can see being deaf a huge annoyance.
connor, when will you be making the decisions? i see that no one has put forth for boatswain. It appears that i made Gjurn perfectly capable for both the captain slot and the boatswain slot.

Actually, there are at least 2 others for the boatswain position. Delmar and Graskkator (they applied for multiple positions).
"Glad to be signed up, or sworn on, or whatever it might be. Let's get this expedition outfitted!" The big man flashes a toothy grin at the others and heartily shakes hands with each in turn, even prompting the stiff, chilly individual to accept the gesture of camaraderie.
Quick question: While a sextant gives a bonus to navigate via survival, would you rule that it would also give a bonus to prof: sailor? A sextant is a sailors navigational tool after all.
Took a quick gander at the ship combat rules. I'm not gonna claim fluency but the virtue of PBP is plenty of time to look up rules when needed.
Following Connor and the others, Rodrigo is careful not to brush up against or bump anyone.
Perception DC 5:
Those of you who look at him for more than a few seconds realize that the only part of his skin that is exposed is his face. The long sleeves of his coat end where the leather of his stylish black gloves begins.
He reaches back pulls an inkpen from one of the side pockets of his well-worn black leather backpack with a casual gesture. Though the pack appears to have seen extensive use, it is clearly well made. "I'd be happy to examine any documents you have for us to sign Mr. Whalend." he says sitting down at a nearby table that is large enough for the entire group.
"Well here we go, standard procedure you know. Only a signature at the bottom is needed. It details all the details about risks, profit, shares, etc, etc, etc."
Honestly, that was just for fun, I don't actually have a full blown contract written out.
Rodrigo will scribe his name in a neat cursive script using his personal pen. After he has signed he will replace it in his bag and sit rigidly straight with his hands clasped together and resting on his knees. "If we are to move on to the matter of provisions I have a couple of thoughts." he intones, staring straight at Connor the entire time. "I'm unsure of our funding, or the size of the berth. However I had the thought that if we find ourselves short on space and have extra gold we could utilize a magical Bag of holding. They come in various sizes and different price ranges, perhaps you have heard of them? We should also purchase a few relatively inexpensive reference books. A small library on board could be invaluable when it comes to identifying the flora and fauna we will inevitably encounter. I also plan on chronicling our adventures, such works often sell well and I'm sure the public will be ravenous for knowledge of what lies beyond the Edge." He tilts his head for a moment, and without changing his expression continues, "I suppose it could make us all rich."

"There we go! Now that this has been taken care of I will see about the supplies you requested. I shall return with the things I and the crew will need."
And with that Mathurin turns and walks out of the tavern.
Do you want us to spend all of the money allotted to us for the purchase of equipment? I am trying to find what I feel we will need. If you don't want to spend all the money I will save some.
Would you elaborate on some of the things I should get? I can think of many things but I do not want to overlap too much with items that others will get. Do I get just things that help us navigate or am I outfitting the group for when we explore on land and sea? Things like: Rope, Torches, Lanterns, Sextants, charts etc...and so on. Is this what you meant?
Lucille moves to the contract and signs it with a flourish. She is quiet, as has been her habit of late, but she smiles broadly - she is clearly pleased with the opportunity this voyage provides for her.
I'll update my character with a little higher Perception. I should have an updated sheet posted shortly.
EDIT: Sheet is updated. I know have +12 Perception and a Spyglass. There has never been a better lookout. Ever.

Nodding to Connor, Gjurn agrees. Although i should feel insulted that i am being chosen for ships mage versus ships captain, I shall agree. Perhaps young Graskkator could learn from my many years of experience. Yes. I accept.
Glancing over the contract, Gjurn accepts and signs in a simple, easy to read signature. Captain Gjurn Swurn, ship mage
well then, since i am the ships magister, where are we headed? I would like to tailor my purchases to ensure that the ship and crew are properly protected from the elements. Gjurn directs his question to both Graskkator and Connor.

"Ah but the Ship's Mage is one of the most respected members of a ship my friend! You are one of our first lines of offense and defense at sea and can serve as a veritable wealth of knowledge when delving ruins or dealing with savage shamans. And I'm sure Captain Grasskator has much to learn from every member of the ship. I simply felt that your experience with the arcane was better suited elsewhere. As for what to purchase... who knows? While we are indeed in tropical waters, the Uncharted Edge will have many dangers... I suggest being ready for everything and in worst case we will craft and create when needed."
[ooc]As well, every character has his or her own private room. I will describe those later on as they are also places of work for some.
"My advice would be prepare for the worst of every scenario you can image, from being becalmed, heat wave, storms, pirates, angry locals and fantastic creatures and curses doing their level best to slaughter us."
I'm gonna do all my in-character stuff in the gameplay thread from now on. Less confusing. Hey, Mathurin, we have some pretty heavy skill overlap in the craft (carpentry), and prof (surgeon) areas. Maybe you could use those six skill points somewhere else? Don't feel like you need to cover them, is all I'm saying. If you want to, cool. But perhaps acrobatics or some of the crafts that we don't have yet might be more useful?
I have several overlaps as well so I might adjust a little (that and I noticed I didn't have a rank of survival which seems wrong considering my background).
I can't find any details on costs and weights of general stuff like timber etc, I can happily say I spend 100gp of timber but for all I know that might weigh 1 tonne or 20. Does anyone know a book that has this sort stuff in it?
probably none... I guess this sort is generally not interesting for adventurers.
Markets and Merchandise from Avalon Games Company suggest a log of common wood cost 5 and a log of good wood cost 10, not that I find that an excellent guide for anything though.
As with the ship, a full description of the crew will be provided. As for wood and supplies to be used for crafting, assume that every 100gp takes up 1 ton. Simpler that way.
As much as I loath to do it, (and he is well rounded I think) I have to alter Mathurin one more time. I use hero lab and I just realized that when I first made him I added an additional feat for the previous game. I just now caught this. I think that I will drop the feat Athletic. My apologies. I was not trying to make a character that was unfair. This is now fixed.
I think we should settle on one specific alternate language as Orcish rather then go between Urdu or Danish. For the record what Mathurin said should be
"Hvis du har brug for en assistent, har jeg rimelige evner som kirurg."
