Entangle placement looks good to me.

FYI Art- Brethon knows Prestidigitation too and he could follow suit with Rafaelis and disguise himself and the people next to him using survival skill or something.

Roger. I'm assuming a +2 circumstance bonus on everyone's hide rolls, given the conditions and the spell use.

BAM! Entangle placement looks great.

The ettin moves quite slowly. The goblins astride the goblin dogs, and the goblins following them move forward then wait, then move forward and wait again.

When the first goblin dog rider pulls up even with the Boulder, he stops and stares directly at Penelope, Professor Bellerophon, and Denge.

Standing on bare rock, once the rider has line of sight, he sees them.

The goblin lets out a cry and draws his dogslicer. The other goblins echo the cry.

Boo! Going a little slow.

Rafaelis thinks to himself, "Damn it! I wanted to avoid this happening all at once. Ugh the gods be cruel!"

As part of his readied action he will step 5' and go prone atop the boulder.

No, no, no! Not yet. I'm sorry, I got grabbed away. Hold off, Rafaelis! I'm still drafting (or was, the edit window closed while I dealt with B.S.).

I'll repost what I was writing and start the combat round.

"Vrasin , vrasin , urrejtje , urrejtje , vrasje , vrasje, masakrojn!" they cry!

Translation from Goblin:
"Kill, kill, hate, hate, murder, murder, mutilate!"

At that moment, Rafaelis utters an arcane word and gestures. Four glowing lanterns appear in a cluster in the ravine, creating pools of bright light in the darkness.

Brett, the spell creates 4 sources of light that shed light in a 20' radius. They must all be within 10' of one another and 110' of you. I'll place four lantern markers on the map. Would you please move them into position? Would you please also let us know how high up they are? Remember, if you move out of range of them, they will wink out.

At the same time, Brethon utters a gutteral word and the plants of the ravine grasp at the goblins and goblin dogs. In the light of the magic lanterns, you see Brethon's muscles ripple and swell.

In the Verduran Forest, Taldor; In combat with an ettin, four goblin dogs, and eight goblins - Oathday, 2 Gozran, 4715 A.R.

The light of Rafaelis' lanterns reveals a tall, hulking, two-headed form. She wears finely-crafted dark leather armor. A golden ring twinkles on her left hand. Her only other gear is a large leather pouch on her left side, which seems almost small on her towering form, and a large, dark clay jug with a stopper, which is slung over her right shoulder on a strap. Her blue eyes shine in the light.

"Ah, ég get séð!" she exclaims.

Translation from Ettin:
"Ah, I can see!"

Knowledge(nature) DC 10 re Ettin:
The ettin is young; therefore, she is not as large as a normal ettin and does not have an extraordinary reach. From what you have heard, she probably has class levels as a medium, but only one or two, you would guess from her age. Ettins usually have only low-light vision and only speak ettin, which is a pidgin of giant, orc, and goblin. Ettins usually prefer to fight with two weapons. They are particularly skilled at it, as well as overruning opponents. The usually can cleave and strike particularly hard. Because ettins have two sets of eyes and ears, they usually are quite perceptive.

Directly before you are four goblins astride goblin dogs. Two of the riders have well-crafted dogslicers, and beautiful, dark, studded leather armor. They have shortbows and quivers on their backs. They also each have a bandoleer of what appear to be alchemical items and potions. In addition, each of the two riders has a particularly nice-looking small, darkwood shield strapped behind it on its mount.

These two riders and their mounts are denoted with blue and purple dots. It was one of these goblins, the one with the blue dot, who spotted Denge, the Professor, and Penelope and called out.

Knowledge (nature) DC 6 re the goblin dogs:
The mangy little goblin dogs have flat noses, beady eyes and protruding, rat-like teeth. They are young, too young to be carrying riders and are overburdened. Goblin dogs usually only have low-light vision, but they have a sense of smell rivaling that of dogs or wolves. Goblin dogs are particularly stealthy and are extraordinary jumpers. They usually bite their foes. They are immune to disease. Their dander is so toxic that touching them causes allergic reactions in non-goblins.

Knowledge (nature) DC 6 re the goblins with alchemical items:
The two goblin riders with alchemical items probably have class levels as rangers. Such goblins usually have some form of humanoid as their favored enemy and are adept at fighting while mounted. They are likely excellent riders and quite stealthy. They probably can attack while riding by, and they likely can deliver particularly heavy blows. Goblins usually can see in the dark and usually only speak goblin.

The other two goblin riders have particularly fine-looking leather armor that is dyed red, silver daggers, silver unholy symbols of three-eyed jackals, wands, and spell-component pouches.

These two riders and their mounts are denoted with red and orange dots.

Knowledge (nature) DC 6 re the goblins with the unholy symbols:
The two goblin riders with silver unholy symbols probably are adepts. Goblin adepts usually can cast simple, first-level spells. Like other goblins, they can see in the dark. Goblin spellcasters usually can speak both goblin and a local humanoid language, such as common.

Knowledge (religion) DC 20:
The three-eyed jackal is a symbol of the goddess Lamashtu, Mother of Monsters. She is a chaotic, evil deity who was once a demon lord. Many monstrous humanoid races claim her as their progenitor. It is not uncommon for goblins to worship her.

The four goblins in the back each have heavily worn leather armor, two dogslicers, shortbows and arrows slung over their backs, and alchemical items hanging about them.

Knowledge (nature) DC 6:
The four goblins on foot are typical, filthy, scrawny examples of their kind. They stand barely three feet all and have ungainly large heads. There only unusual thing about them is that they are armed for two-handed combat.

The four goblins on foot are denoted with red, pink, purple, and green dots. They also each have a yellow dot to indicate they are the ones that were on foot initially, in case some of the goblin riders are separated from their mounts. Roll20 doesn't have 8 different color dots to use to differentiate the goblins, so I had to double-up on colors

The goblins cries are dampened by the foliage of the ravine. Their weapons glint in the magical lantern-light. Many of the goblins, two of the goblin dogs, and the ettin each struggle with the writhing, entangling plants.

The dancing lights each radiate 20' of bright light. There is dim light 20' beyond that. Those ranges are doubled for individuals with low-light vision.

Rafaelis neither dropped prone nor took a 5' step as part of his readied action as those actions were not declared as part of the ready. Please move him to where he was if you already moved him for the step.

No one else declared actions during the time you had while the goblins and ettin advanced, so only Rafaelis and Brethon acted in the surprise round. Brethon delayed for the dancing lights and has been adjusted in the initiative order to account for that fact.

Penelope is next, then some goblins, then Albern, Professor Bellerophon, and Bear'f.

Please refrain from stating your actions out of order, it is really hard to go back and keep track of them, and conditions tend to change, especially with such a full battlefield. If possible, I will lift this restriction toward the end of the combat.

Go for it, Penelope!

Brett, I placed the lanterns on the map in a spot near you. Please place them in a cluster, all within 10' of one another, within 110' of Rafaelis' original position. (And please remember to move Rafaelis back to that position, if he's not already there.)

Penelope is startled by the yelling and noise of the goblins on wolfback.

She know she must go forward and attack to protect the party, to protect Denge.

As she steps off of the rock she stumbles on her robes, she catches her balance but drops her double sword.

By the time she regains her balance she is right in front of a goblin.

Instinct takes over and she slams the goblin[Purple] right in the chest!

5. One of the goblins on foot [Purple] that has thus far evaded the grass moves toward Albern, drawing his second dogslicer as he does so. When he arrives, he slashes at the gnome! Purple Goblin Dogslicer Attack: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17 Damage: 1d4 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1. The filthy, rusty weapon misses Albern by far!

Albern attacks the goblin as it approaches him. From what Jake posted earlier, it appears Albern has his bardiche out and has reach. Since you had surprise, Albern is not flat-footed and can take an attack of opportunity. However, he is not raging yet. Albern's Bardiche Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 5 + 1 = 17 Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5. The blade on Albern's bardiche slices into the goblin's flank, dealing it a great wound.

Albern drops his bardiche, draws his nodachi, flies into a rage, and attacks the goblin [Purple]! Albern can't take a 5' step back to attack with his reach weapon. I assume he's using the nodachi instead now. In fact, looking at it, he may have had the nodachi all along, but I'm not going to take his hit back. I'm sorry if I misunderstood. He then draws a flask and throws it at Penelope, standing right next to him! Both actions draw attacks of opportunity from Penelope.

Blue Goblin Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 fire damage

The flask strikes Penelope, coating her in liquid fire! Here clothes are aflame!

Penelope will burn next round, taking 1d6 additional fire damage if she does not either immerse herself in water or take a full-round action to put out the flames (DC 15, 17 if she rolls on the ground).

Fire splashes the attacker, his mount, and the riderless goblin dog next to him. Each takes 1 point of damage.

13. Uphill from the Boulder, the ettin attempts to break free from the entangling foliage. Ettin's Strength Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 The ettin remains stuck fast!

14. One of the goblins on foot [Red], who is entangled, unslings his bow and shoots up toward Rafaelis. Red Goblin Attack: 1d20 + 4 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 4 - 4 - 2 = 13 (cover, entangled) Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3 The arrow strikes true, wounding Rafaelis!

My records indicate Rafaelis' AC is 11. Is that correct? If so, Rafaelis takes 3 damage.

Denge is up next, then the final goblin, then back to the top of the round!

Dark Archive

rafaelis's AC is currently 13 due to the ritual from Jack Wereson's book, but 13 still hits.

Denge attemps to impose a fog on the goblin with the alchemical bandoleer who has ridden ahead of the rest of the goblins. Though there is no outer sign of the casting, the goblin looks about confused.

Blue Goblin Dog Rider Will Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

He shakes his head to clear it!

15. The one goblin dog that has not yet acted would have attempted to follow the order it was given, but it is unconscious, blinded, and stunned.

Penelope's eye's go wide as she realizes the goblin in front of her is about to pull a flask of oil from his gear and try to light her on fire!

Fearing being burned alive, and hoping to stop him, she swings wildly at the Goblins head!
"Nooo!"
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Damage Roll: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

An Atack of Opportunity "interrupts" the normal flow of actions in the round. If an attack of opportunity is provoked, immediately resolve the attack of opportunity, then continue with the next character's turn (or complete the current turn, if the attack of opportunity was provoked in the midst of a character's turn).

To make it easier, you can take AoOs when you notice you got them. I'll try to point them out, but waiting for them will take a really long time! I'll only wait if one is likely to kill a foe unless it crits.

Penelope's blade bites into the bomb-lobbing goblin, dealing him a grievous wound. This goblin is made of sterner stuff, though, and looks like he will fight on!

1. The riderless goblin dog in the second entangle zone [Purple] clambers out of the zone, up onto the lower parts of the Boulder. Provoking attacks of opportunity from Penelope, if she has one left, and Professor Bellerophon, if he has a weapon in hand.

The dog then bites at Denge! Purple Goblin Dog Bite: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3 The rat-like teeth pierce Denge's flesh, greviously injuring him.

2. The Forgotten One has not acted to this point. he steps forward and lays a slender hand on Rafaelis. As he does, you see Rafaelis become hazy and difficult to discern.

Rafaelis is under a blur effect. Rafaelis has 20% concealment for the next 3 minutes.

Knowledge (nature) DC 12 re the Forgotten One:
Forgotten Ones can cast blur at will.

3. The other goblin dog in the second entangle zone [Blue], the one ridden by a goblin with an alchemical bandoleer, also surges out, toward Bear'f.

The goblin dog moves through the entangle area, around the smaller boulder. Its movement provokes an attack of opportunity from Penelope against either its rider or it, as Penelope chooses, assuming she has one left.

It is Penelope's turn. Then a goblin and a goblin dog, then Albern, Professor Bellerophon, and Bear'f.

[Revised to account for Penelope's great AoO, which posted while I was drafting.]

Penelope does not make any additional Aoos as she can only take one per round.

Penelope Waystrider wrote:

Alchemist's fire only burns for 1 round after a hit, so you take initial damage and, unless you attempt a saving throw, a second round of damage.

The flames gutter and die, but not before Penelope is further injured.

4. The riderless, wounded goblin dog that was directly below Rafaelis [Red] continues to move forward, past Penelope. Provoking an attack of opportunity, though she is prone. It stops when it reaches the second entangle zone and attacks Penelope! Red Goblin Dog Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4. Spooked, it misses her entirely.

5. The wounded goblin that has been attacking Albern continues to do so! It slices twice at the little gnome. Main Hand Purple Goblin Dogslicer Attack: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7 Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2 Off Hand Purple Goblin Dogslicer Attack: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13 Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1 (two-weapon fighting feat) Both of the rusty, razor-like blades miss!

Albern is next, followed by Professor Bellerophon and Bear'f. Then come more goblins and goblin dogs.

I believe Jake is only intermittently available this weekend. So everyone can go ahead rather than wait for Albern. We can bot Albern if Jake doesn't post by tomorrow morning, but I'd at least like to give him an opportunity before I do. There's enough going on that taking him out of order won't affect the outcome much. The one goblin attacking him just went.

Joe, don't forget Penelope's latest AoO! She just went, so she has one again, though she's prone.

Albern's sword inflicts a mighty blow to the goblin, creating a bloody mess. Nevertheless, the goblin lives!

You may move Albern back if you wish, as this movement will provoke three attacks of opportunity, one from the Purple goblin just attacked, one from the Blue goblin dog, and one from the Blue goblin dog rider. That's difficult terrain back in there.

Bear'f fires his crossbow. Both the rider on the goblin dog before him [Blue] and the goblin dog itself [also Blue] see an opening and seize it!

Blue Goblin Dog Rider Attack of Opportunity: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Blue Goblin Dog Attack of Opportunity: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12 Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Both attacks miss!

Bear'f's shot, in contrast, strikes the rider! The rider is gravely wounded, but still clings to life as his life's blood pours forth from the bolt wound!

Sorry, no 5' step. All of the areas on the map with foliage are difficult terrain. Only the areas of grass and water are normal. However, those areas are covered in wet leaves, not grass or water.

The orange goblin dog rider is up. Somehow he got moved, 'cause he's entangled and his dog has been color-sprayed, but his pog was no longer in the entangle and he was no longer in color spray formation. I find no indication that they moved in my posts. Therefore, I must have inadvertently moved him. I have moved him back to where he belongs.

The goblin with the unholy symbol who leapt of the unconscious, blind, and stunned goblin dog [Orange] wonders what just hit the dog and how to undo it. Alas, his training at the feet of the tribe's shaman did not include spell lore. Nevertheless, he does the best he can and tries to shake the dog away. Unsuccessful, he draws forth a slender bone wand.

The goblin with the unholy symbol whose goblin dog managed to escape the entangling vines and who was himself left to the mercy of the vines [Red] similarly draws a slender bone wand and activates it, pressing a hand against the unconscious, blind, and stunned goblin dog [Orange] as he does so. The wand flashes with golden light, which runs up the arm of the goblin wielding the wand, across his chest, and down his other arm to the unconscious goblin dog. If the wand had any effect, it is not immediately obvious.

Spellcraft DC 15 re the wand activation:
The goblin tried to cast cure light wounds, which apparently had no effect on an unconscious, blind, and stunned goblin dog that is otherwise unwounded.
