Encounter Map

Our heroic band of adventurers is enjoying an evening at the Pennywhistle, a tavern known for its "rough and tumble" nature and a haven for wanderers, drifters and well, adventurers. It's passing into evening and the disparate groups are at their cups, discussing whatever it is that ails them this fine day on the Flaeness. ROLEN and CARRIC sit apart from the humans, quietly discussing their mission from the Dreadwood Rangers. PEREN and the wizard KIRIAN have just arrived some minutes ago and are searching for Peren's contact at the Pennywhistle. HABBI the most foreign of the heroes, sits alone, enjoying his own council for the moment. A songsmith strikes up a bawdy tune and soon the entire Tavern rings with songs of Maids and their naughty deeds...

Gameplay is ready. After everyone posts a little RP post I'll move us along

Male Halfling Rogue 4 | AC 15 | HP 23/23 | S+0/D+6/C+0/I+4/W+1/C+1 | Perc +3 | Init +4

Entering the tavern after a long journey south, Peren spies his friend Habbi sitting off to one side.

"Habbi my friend. How have you been?", the halfling calls over the rowdy singing.

Male Wood Elf Ranger Monster Slayer (Soldier)/4; AC: 16; HP: 36/36; Passive Perception 14; Init +4 (Adv); Saves: Str +2, Dex +6; HD Used 1/3

Carric furtively glances around the room, making sure to catalogue the strange mix of individuals settling into their cups. He leans in close to Rolen so as not to be overheard.

Well, my friend, I think I will order some fine wine for myself. What will you be having? Have you noticed that this seems a fairly rough crowd?

He perks up when the halfling addresses the foreign-looking man.

The small folk have always intrigued me. I may want to chat with the fellow.

Male High Elf Wizard 4; AC: 12/15 (Mage Armor+DEX); HP: 26/26 Temp HP: 0/0 Passive Perception 13; Init +4; Saves: STR -1 DEX +2 CON +2 INT+6 WIS+3 CHA+0 HD 4/4, Spell slots 1:4/4 2:3/3, Insp:0

Kirian stands behind Peren and scans the room carefully. He stops when he sees the two Wood Elves sitting apart from everyone. He makes them as soldiers from their attire.

Dreadwood ... I didn't think they ventured out very much. This could mean trouble if they're down here.

He continues to size them up, careful not to stare.

One of them looks over at Peren, and Kirian adjusts his hood to not reveal his Elven features just yet.

They're rather rough around the edges, but I'd expect no less from their ilk. Still, they could be useful. They definitely look like they can handle themselves in a fight.

Male Halfling Rogue 4 | AC 15 | HP 23/23 | S+0/D+6/C+0/I+4/W+1/C+1 | Perc +3 | Init +4

Turning and seeing his travelling companion standing in the door way, Peren sighs, then waves at him.

"Kirian! Over here! This is my friend Habbi. Come on over and join us."

male variant human (Bakluni) | cleric 3 | hp 26/26 | AC 16 (14 w/o shield; 12 w/o shield of faith) Passive Per 12 | Init +0 | Saves: Wis +4, Cha +4

A wide smile breaks upon Habbi's face as he says in the tongue of the smallfolk, "The days are ever full of good food and better company!"

Then in the common tongue he continues, "Pleased to meet you Kirian, pull up a seat! What brings you two down to Saltmarsh?"

Male High Elf Wizard 4; AC: 12/15 (Mage Armor+DEX); HP: 26/26 Temp HP: 0/0 Passive Perception 13; Init +4; Saves: STR -1 DEX +2 CON +2 INT+6 WIS+3 CHA+0 HD 4/4, Spell slots 1:4/4 2:3/3, Insp:0

Kirian keeps his hood up and quietly moves in to Peren and Habbi. With a warm smile under his hood he extends his hand towards Habbi.

"Kirian Gess at your service. It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Habbi."

"I've studied several of the Balkuni legends. A truly remarkable body of knowledge."

Male Wood Elf Ranger Monster Slayer (Soldier)/4; AC: 16; HP: 36/36; Passive Perception 14; Init +4 (Adv); Saves: Str +2, Dex +6; HD Used 1/3

Carric whispers to Rolen.

It appears that three of them are together, and there is a High-Elf, if I am not mistaken, among them.

male variant human (Bakluni) | cleric 3 | hp 26/26 | AC 16 (14 w/o shield; 12 w/o shield of faith) Passive Per 12 | Init +0 | Saves: Wis +4, Cha +4

Habbi laughs, "Legends? I love the stories of my people! I love stories in general, so I guess that doesn't mean much."

The young man gestures, "Have a seat."

Assuming the two pull up a chair, Habbi calls out to a barmaid, "Millie! A couple of drinks and some hot stew, please!"

Male High Elf Wizard 4; AC: 12/15 (Mage Armor+DEX); HP: 26/26 Temp HP: 0/0 Passive Perception 13; Init +4; Saves: STR -1 DEX +2 CON +2 INT+6 WIS+3 CHA+0 HD 4/4, Spell slots 1:4/4 2:3/3, Insp:0

Kirian pulls up one of the chairs and sits down. He slowly pulls back his hood, revealing his very pale, almost grey-blue skin. His unmistakeable elven ears protrude from his long black hair. His bright green eyes dart around the room looking for immediate reactions. When there are none he relaxes a bit and settles into the chair.

To Habbi, "Thank you, you're too kind."

"As to why we are in Saltmarsh, I can't speak for our mutual friend here, but I come at the behest of the Wizard School in Gorna, to the North. They have asked that I investigate the stories of the haunted house just outside of town. Rumor is it once belonged to an Alchemist who went mad and disappeared, and now it is plagued with unnatural forces."

"It's a bit exciting for me, really. This is my first assignment outside of the school's vast libraries, and I don't want to disappoint the Elder Wizards."

Male Halfling Rogue 4 | AC 15 | HP 23/23 | S+0/D+6/C+0/I+4/W+1/C+1 | Perc +3 | Init +4

"Yeah, and I thought we could tag along...you know...like guards or something. Well, maybe not guards, but you know what I mean."

Peren seems both excited and terrified of the prospect of adventuring, but none the less has decided to try his hand at it!

AC: 15/17; Passive Perception 14; Init +3; Saves: Str +5, Con +3;

At the mention of drink Rolen waves off the question, his taste for alcohol tending to be infrequent. Instead the warrior responds to Carric's observations about the crowd with his own less than subtle narrowing of his eyes as he watches first the general patrons and then with increasing interest the same group as his friend.

Looks like an academic. Cloister monk? Wizard? Seems like a strange place to meet. You want to talk to the halfling don't you? Rolen offers a smirk to the other Wood Elf, the kind that Carric knows is a brotherly teasing saved only for his friend.

Male Wood Elf Ranger Monster Slayer (Soldier)/4; AC: 16; HP: 36/36; Passive Perception 14; Init +4 (Adv); Saves: Str +2, Dex +6; HD Used 1/3

Exactly, the group fascinates me. It may be worthwhile. There may be some adventure in it for us.

He stands and smiles at Rolen.

You know me too well, friend. Come, let us see what we can stir up.

Carric stands and waits for Rolen to join him. He walks confidently towards the three strangers, and he addresses the group in common.

Well met. I am Carric and this is my companion, Rolen. We are new in town, and we were wondering if you could tell us a bit about the area and share a glass of the establishment's finest wine? Barkeep, if you would be so kind to bring a bottle of wine for the table?

male variant human (Bakluni) | cleric 3 | hp 26/26 | AC 16 (14 w/o shield; 12 w/o shield of faith) Passive Per 12 | Init +0 | Saves: Wis +4, Cha +4

Habbi laughs at Peren's comment, "Of course! Haven't been near that place since I was 10!"

Noticing the pair of elves approaching, the young man, whose smile never left his face, "Well met, always up for the company of elves! Your people so rarely visit our small town, having the chance to meet three in one night is not an opportunity to pass on lightly. Pull up a seat, though I tend to prefer mead to wine. What do you wish to know about the area?"

Encounter Map

The barkeep is bringing a bottle of wine to the table when a high pitched scream erupts from outside the Tavern.
Dear gods! a man says It's blimey lizards from the swamp! They've swam up the harbor!

Male Wood Elf Ranger Monster Slayer (Soldier)/4; AC: 16; HP: 36/36; Passive Perception 14; Init +4 (Adv); Saves: Str +2, Dex +6; HD Used 1/3

Carric immediately notches an arrow to his bow and makes his way to the door.

To arms, Rolen!

Male Halfling Rogue 4 | AC 15 | HP 23/23 | S+0/D+6/C+0/I+4/W+1/C+1 | Perc +3 | Init +4

"Oh my! How exciting. Does this sort of thing happen offer in Saltmarsh Habbi?", the halfling asks as he prepares his bow and heads for the door. Again the expression of terror and excitement war over Peren's face.

AC: 15/17; Passive Perception 14; Init +3; Saves: Str +5, Con +3;

Rolen having not even really settled to sit, moves after Carric intently.

Encounter Map

Carric, Peren and Rolen get close enough to the door to see into the gloomy street. It's twilight, so penalties unless you have low light vision or a light source

Carric and Rolen spot some movement and see several lizardfolk rushing down the street. Frantic townsfolk scatter as they approach.

Right now everyone is still inside the Pennywhistle...but Carric, Rolen and Perren are close enough to the door now that they can make it outside in a single move.

Habbi shrugs, "Happens once in a while, I suppose. Let's get out there before people get hurt."

The young man stands up, snatching his mace up from against the wall and shoulders his shield, then makes his way to the door along with the others. As he notes the dimming light outside, Habbi traces a symbol on his mace as he whispers a prayer causing it to light up like a torch! Then he grins to the others and leaves through the door!

That's always the risk with playing a Wizard. If he doesn't make it I think the next character will need to be a bit hardier.

At least my Druid in the Pathfinder game I'm playing on another thread is faring better, though he might be wolf-chow soon.

Realizing the situation is getting dire, Kirian decides that casting Fire Bolt may not be the best action. He rises to his feet and casts Sleep about 25 feet ahead of him.

I drew an arrow on the map to indicate point of impact. The Green, Red and Shaman Lizardfolk are all in the impact area, but the rest of us aren't.

Sleep Affect HP: 5d8 ⇒ (1, 5, 2, 7, 4) = 19

Sleep:

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 90 feet
Components: V, S, M (a pinch of fine sand, rose petals, or a cricket)
Duration: 1 minute

This spell sends creatures into a magical slumber. Roll 5d8; the total is how many hit points of creatures this spell can affect. Creatures within 20 feet of a point you choose within range are affected in ascending order of their current hit points (ignoring unconscious creatures).

Starting with the creature that has the lowest current hit points, each creature affected by this spell falls unconscious until the spell ends, the sleeper takes damage, or someone uses an action to shake or slap the sleeper awake.

Subtract each creature’s hit points from the total before moving on to the creature with the next lowest hit points. A creature’s hit points must be equal to or less than the remaining total for that creature to be affected.

Undead and creatures immune to being charmed aren’t affected by this spell.

Entangled gives you the restrained condition if you fail the save. If you are restrained, attacks against you have advantage and your attacks are at disadvantage. You can break the restrained condition with a successful save at the same DC 11 with a STR check. I am not sure how the GM or rules interpret your attempt to free me, Rolen, but I like the effort!
