"I didn't shoot no monkeys," Churchmouse says, a bit grumpily due to lack of comfortable sleep. "Shoulda shot the Gillpuss we saw, though, but we thought he was bein' civil to us. Said we could take whatever we needed as long as we sailed with the next tide."

"Define 'Shot'," Marius said, tentatively.
"One of the little buggers stole a pack from us, so yeah, I looked a few arrows its way. Didn't get it, though."

"The locals think if the monkeys are harmed that they will be punished by the gods. They take any threat very seriously, even if a monkey isn't actually harmed."

"Would have been good to know. Looks like next time we come here we will just have to take what we want by force. Do you need me to check the weather, or make more alcohol? Or are we good on both for now?"

"We are good Ulark."

-----

The remainder of the trip to Dol Golmar is smooth if long. About a day out from the Island kingdom you start seeing Golmarian Navy vessels, first a pair of frigates leaving on a long range patrol. Black steam spewing from a smoke stack at the back of the ships powering a pair of large paddle wheels. The hulls are coated in some kind of black metal, rumor has it that magic is used to reduce the weight of the ships to allow them to move with decent speed. Closer to the Port you see a lower angular ship of black metal, with dark smoke slowly drifting from a pair of smoke stacks. It is moving very slowly and has 6 gunports on each side.

The Port of Holdan Vas has a pair of low, stone fortress on hills overlooking the port. A sea wall protects the inner harbor with a large sliding gate to close it completely.

The city is built half above ground of stone and half below ground into the hills.

As you approach a stone pier, you see a trio of dwarves with a stack of papers.

The orc blood that doesn't boil (or even exist) in her veins is stirred nonetheless when Churchmouse catches a glimpse of dwarves waiting on the dock.

Moving close to Ashes (but within earshot of Ulark), Mouse grouses:
{Orc} "Damned hairy midgets, always got their fat little fingers tryin' to grab someone else's gold! And these three look like they're paper-shufflers of some sort--pathetic! Any idea what they want, Ashes?"

{orc}"Probably some kind of inspectors, looking to tax anything we have brought. Make sure we aren't smuggling slaves or something."

"Make way for Customs inspectors."

As the dwarven customs inspectors make their way aboard they give many people hard looks and make their way towards the captain.

"I assume you command this vessel? I am Port Inspector Horlin, assuming you are honest this will go smoothly. Your manifest claims that you hold little cargo, only a few crates belonging to a Gnome Cade Brightdawn. Take me to them."

The captain turns "Ulark, Marius please show these gentlemen whatever they want. Take some other crew with you if needed."

With practiced ease and jovial confidence Ulark took the inspectors aboard the ship. "Just a humble trading vessel, though we do contract work as well. If someone wants to hire us to take them where they need to go. Ah, but my manners. My name is Ulark, and I make mead for the crew. It's on the way to the crates. It, of course, is not dwarven made, but I am proud of it nonetheless. Might I offer you some as I show you around? It would do me great honor to have the approval of dwarves for my work. And if not, it will just mean that I will need to work harder."

"I am inspector Horlin, this is assistant inspector Kalad. Unfortunately we cannot accept any gifts in the course of our work. However, off the clock is a different story. So you crossed from the Cortill Islands with only a few crates? They must be full of great wealth."

"Wealth is what someone's willing to...pay, or something like that... Marius offers, his confidence in his knowledge of economics faltering as he trails off.

"Still! You all know the real reason men like us sail! It's not the money, it's the excitement. No life quite like it, I'll say."

"True...but I prefer gold. We are also paid to transport passengers. How much they pay and why they wish to travel immediately is not out concern. It costs a fair bit of coin to charter your own ship, but so long as I get paid my dues I don't ask questions. We once escorted a gnome to his home island for his father's funeral. His original ship got scuttled and he paid a shiny copper for th fastest, safest ship there is."

"Well you can always find a dwarf who prefers gold, though most won't sail for it. Where you heading after this, another port on the island? West to the mainland? Lots of dwarves heading that way these recent years with the discoveries."

"Open up this crate, we need to inspect the contents."

Mouse continues to watch the proceedings from the shadows, too weak to efficiently open a crate. She tries to figure out if the inspectors are suspicious of the Black Scepter and its cargo for some reason.
