I have a couple of questions before I finish buying gear and writing a background: 1) Do we get traits? 2)Is it OK for me to treat my armor and weapons as if I crafted them?

I'll do a backstory, but I'm waiting for answers to these questions. The answers will change the backstory.

Kind of an odd question that just tickled my brain here: Paizo products are okay by default. So... what about a custom race built using 10RP (human standard) from the ARG?

Not saying I will do this, just had the thought pop in lol

@Sarpadian: Yes, you get standard traits - 2, plus a third if you also take a drawback. Yes, you can treat weapons and armor as crafted if you possess the ability to do so.

@James: I would probably accept that without many questions - 10 RP isn't really enough to break the system no matter what your choices are, and that's my main concern.

Dotting for interest. Seriously considering a Zen Archer/Inquisitor - will have something up as soon as possible ;)

@Rednal
Since you do value literacy well, do you care if we start sentences with and or but? RL. Stine does it all the time in his books. "And that's when it happened."

And that's when I decided to make stuff clear - you don't need to be that strict about it. I just want you to be thinking along the lines of describing your actions, rather than simply posting "Attack Roll" as the entirety of what you do.

Something like,
*clears throat*
The spell sword winces as the previous blow strikes him knocking the wind out of him, but otherwise not being too damaging due to his skill at tensing his stomach to avoid damage. He sees an opening in his opponent's defence and, chaneling arcane might through his weapon, he slashes ferociously at the creature, intending to open up it's bowels.
As opposed to
Ok you hit my AC, you only did 3 damage after DR, though I fail my fort save vs fatigue
I'm using power attack and arcane strike, does a 17 hit?

Precisely. XD

okay that makes sense, sometimes I have problems being creative with attacks as far as description, so I add in character speech to be creative. Like if I hit 3 times in a row, sometimes I'll write something bland or redundant. Though the enemy is wearing studded leather armor, I find a small opening, a part that the armor is not covering and I slash him there. And it might have similar stuff in the next 2 instead of creativity of different things I could have done to bypass the ac, though I will try to be creative each time when I know I hit. Or if I can't think of something creative, I'll just speak. I'm so good, I can find weak spots in even the toughest armor. lets assume he was wearing heavy armor when I said this, otherwise, my character would be a nut-case. Though when I have my character speak in combat it is usually something silly.

Though I'm starting with a warhammer. So...You might have on chainmail, but with enough force, you will still feel the impact of my warhammer and it will hurt.

Okay - GM I plan on a mender method vitalist/soulknife half giant.

This big frontliner will be a capably healer. The soulknife will have access to a magic weapon, and, with covert training, should have a host of capable skills.

Any problem with psionics and hslf giants -- dreamscarred press stuff.

Okay, I have crunch put together, it's just a matter of transferring it to a profile and writing up crunch. General idea is that Tarov is going to be a hard-nosed soldier of Torag that got sucked into the dungeon while exploring a recently-excavated cavern underneath his mountain home. Originally an scholar of architecture, necessity has taught Tarov how defend himself and others, with what little tools he's got. And he's gotten damn good at it, too.

Myth-weavers: Jason Fury

Male CG Aasimar Flowing Monk & Stormborn Sorcerer
Abilities Str 14, Dex 14, Con 10, Int 10, Wis 16, Cha 18

Backstory:

Age? 10
Parent/s? Murdered
Race? Half-human. Possibly an aasimar.
Starting Bid? 1000gp

Orphaned and a slave to a minor noble in Cheliax named Duraga, Jason was living a life of relative peace, able to survive from day to day. Years later however Jason would fall for a baker's daughter named Nikole. She lives in the other end of the city but Jason saw her when he opened the door to receive the cake for his master house one morning. Needless to say, he was stunned that he couldn't speak as he stared at her until she reminded him for the third time regarding payment. Days later, Jason would find the courage to sneak out of the house just to find her. He'd usually sneak away once a week but after a month Jason would meet with Nikole nearly every day, happiness filling him from just being beside her. Sadly it wasn't meant to last...

It was six months after their first meeting when the house guards suddenly stormed into Jason's room during his sleep, clamped him into chains and threw him in the basement dungeons without explanation. His fears where confirmed the next morning when the guards brought him into the ritual chamber where he discovered that they too had taken Nikole prisoner. Like him, she was tied up and unconscious, her head down as she hanged from her hands whose chains were attached to the ceiling. The guards left as Duraga entered the chamber dressed in his summoning garb and Jason feared the worst more than ever.

Duraga smiled and approached Nikole, stroking her cheek with a long nailed finger "You have chosen a very fine sacrifice for me Jason. She served me well last night and will do so again for the great lord." Jason ceaselessly struggled against his binds and screamed his rage into his gag, but it was all for naught as Duraga began chanting. The summoning circle in the middle of the chamber glowed red, becoming brighter and brighter until it filled the room with its reddish tinge. Jason could feel the corruption filling the room, although he knew that the circle was supposed to protect them from whatever was beyond the magic. Duraga laughed as he drew out a dagger and looked at Jason who continued to struggle wildly against his bonds. Staring straight into Jason's eyes with malicious intent, Duraga plunged the dagger into Nikole's chest who woke up from the pain, screaming.

Not again.... Noooooo!

A bright flash of blue light erupted from the core of Jason's being as his bonds exploded in a shower of metal shards. He never felt so much power within him! It was as if he was a god who can do whatever he wished, and right now there was only one thing he wanted to do. Channeling his power into his right hand, he dashed towards the stunned man in front of him with lightning speed and drove two of his fingers into Duraga's eyes before unleashing it. A great shock of electricity enveloped Duraga's head which grew and boiled from the heat. Drawing back his hand, Jason hears the door to the basement slam open. He watched Duraga fall silently whose face seem to melt into the hard stone floor, marring the runes and destroying the ritual. As the guards came running down the steps, the one in front stopped as he saw the spectacle before him.

Red light from the ritual circle was receding as Jason stood over Duraga lying dead on the floor. Sparks of lightning flow around Jason, traveling in arcs from head to arms, hands and feet as if every part of him that was exposed to the air was a conductor. Then Jason turned to look at them, his eyes glowing with bluish energy were undoubtedly filled with uncontrollable rage. As if a bolt of lightning passed between them, the guards were also slain mere seconds later. Their skin and armor burnt in places where Jason touched them, their eyes and teeth crusted black and smoking from the heat.

Finally having expended his power and rage, Jason regained himself. He was observing himself kill these men as a different person watching behind the same set of eyes which belonged to a madman, but understood that this was power he alone possess. He ran back into the ritual chamber, picked up the keys from Duraga's body and freed Nikole. It was too late however... Her beautiful eyes stare past him and into the ceiling as Jason knelt beside her. He bowed his head over hers as he cried in sorrow, tears dripping upon her smooth cheeks while he closed her eyes with a bloody hand.

After what felt like years of wallowing in grief, Jason realized that he cannot stay much longer. He picked Nikole up, carried her upon his back and using Duraga's keys, he opened the door to the secret passage behind the banner bearing Asmodeous' symbol of an inverted 5-pointed star. He had seen Duraga accessing this doorway several times before and with him bearing the only set of keys, none may follow lest they trigger the trap to bring down the whole house. Locking the door behind him, Jason proceeded to escape the city of Cheliax.

Days later, Jason is found kneeling next to a fresh grave in Barrowood with a tombstone bearing the name of Nikole. Celestial runes are roughly carved upon the stone's surface:

Here lies Nikole Maria
The love of my life,
and the light of my days.

Tears leak past Jason closed eyes as he recalls the horror in the ritual chamber...
Never again! I will never be so weak again that I cannot protect those that I love... I will learn these powers granted to me by my heritage and become a master upon myself. This I swear to you... Nikole.

As Jason opens his eyes, it flashed for a moment with bluish energy once again before returning back to normal. He stands up, dried his eyes with the sleeve of his tunic and took his first step to begin his journey that will take him across the land. He learned to hunt his own food in the wilds and trade any excess for silver to ride along caravans. Over the years, Jason will find himself poring over books in vast libraries of major citues, meditating with monks of Irori, and learning magic with acolytes of Nethys. Now, it seems as if destiny has called for him as he travels to the place where he shall leave his mark upon the world, or die trying.

@GM:
Sorry, if the backstory came up a bit long...
No items yet though. What's the starting gold? I'll put it all in an alias when chosen.
Depending on the group, I can fill in the blaster role or go with a defensive build. :)
Also, let me know if you want me to reword the last sentence of the backstory so that it fits yours.

1000 GP is standard wealth for Level 2. ^^

Here is Marrin again--this time with alias and backstory! I'll probably wind up redoing the gear; some of my ideas for the crunchier stuff changed as I was doing the fluff.

Shadow Lodge

It amuses me how many times starting wealth is asked about.

That's because people never reach level 2 in games they start on these boards! =D

...

*Sobs*

Shadow Lodge

Moreso it's an uncommon starting level
More often it's 1 or 4
That and maybe they think gestalt changes WBL

Just making sure, though being a monk/sorc I don't need much to start off with.

@GM: from your description of the adventure style, it seems that there would be only one way into and out of the dungeon correct?

The entrance and exit are separate areas, actually - and you get to use each path exactly once. XD

GM Rednal wrote:

*Sobs*

That's not entirely true. The group I'm running has made it to level 3 so far without anyone dropping.

i am very interested but, in the interest of full disclosure, i'm applying for the pseudo-gestalt carrion crown game and if i get chosen for that before you decide i would have to withdraw my application (though if you decide first, and choose me, i would withdraw my application there). if you're willing to consider an application with that condition give the say so and i'll put one together (maybe a slayer/cleric of gorum, or a fighter/bard)

I believe I'm applying as a player for that same game... XD But yes, I'll consider applications with that caveat.

Would love to join with one of my pre-built characters.

Half-Orc Hunter/Barbarian utilizing amplified rage with pet. Low Healing/Heavy Damage/Medium Durability

Tiefling Monk/Druid utilzing cat transformations and combat styles. Low Healing/Heavy Damage/High Mobility/High Durability

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

GM Rednal wrote:

i thought so. (ghost gunslinger/shaman, right? good luck.) depending on the post rates i might be able to do both but i wanted to be open from the get go that i might have to withdraw. i've been thinking about it this afternoon and i'm thinking about maybe slayer or ranger/witch instead of cleric...

also, what are your feelings on paladins? i was thinking about maybe a pally of Sarenrae on one side and ninja on the other- one who believes that the light of the dawnflower births shadows so that her servants can use them to battle evil.

one final question- what's your stance on prestige classes? are they fair game (if so are there any exceptions, like MT or EK)? and can we use early entry? for example, could i do like trapper ranger on one side and use early entry to go cleric 2/empyreal sorc 1/MT on the other, or is that too egregious?

Here is my half-giant soul-knife/vitalist. He will be a capable combatant with limited armor, sort of a glass cannon. But his healing and defensive skills will be extensive. I am finishing up his skills and equipment. With a good array of skills, he should fit two roles(melee/healer) well. With his synesthete ability he should have an uncanny perception (+13).

Not as a ghost - I ended up making an android as my second submission, sort of a polar opposite of my first. XD

Paladins are fine, though I do expect you to uphold the codes inasmuch as they'd apply in the game - not that this will matter much in a game that's largely about raiding dungeons, killing monsters, and collecting loot. So, uh, don't play a Paladin expecting to overcome the great plots of evil or anything - though you might still have to deal with the occasional trick from a demon in a given room.

Paizo's prestige classes are legal as long as you qualify for them - alignment restrictions can be maneuvered around by taking the Beyond Morality mythic ability, and I'll accept taking that at Tier 1 instead of 3 if you want/need to get those classes in early. Third-party prestige classes are case-by-case.

Okay, not my original idea, but here's my app:
Lexia Holmes, WoP sorcerer/oracle.

This is my first WoP character, so I'm not sure how this will go quite. But, it pretty much guarantees that I'll write descriptive spells lol

Okay, threw something together for Tarov. Please enjoy. :)

Background:
Tarov Boulderfist was once a simple architect of the dwarven mountain home of Thanehelm. Smart as he was hearty, the dwarf spent his days investigating newly-found thaigs, ruins and relics. Though he was no slouch with a blade, Tarov was a scholar through and through. The surge of slaying a foe was nothing to the thrill of discovering ancient relics. And so Boulderfist passed his days, contentedly surveying, cataloging and studying the history of his people. But one day, Tarov and his dig crew found something truly out of the ordinary.

It was in the depths of a long-forgotten cave system that they came upon a mass of swirling magics. Set into an ornate marble construction, it seemed almost like a mirror - except the only thing is reflected was the endless void. Stars twinkled within its black shine. When one of the crew threw a small pebble at the surface, it flew right through and disappeared, leaving ripples in its wake. "It's a portal," one of the other dwarves claimed, before a hush of amazed silence took all those gathered in the dusty room.

Mustering his courage, Tarov reached out to test the surface with a slightly-shaking hand. "I wonder-" he started, just as his fingertips touched the event horizon. But he never finished that sentence, as the portal grabbed his arm and sucked the dwarf in, without so much as a sound, leaving a room full of surprised and worried workers.

Boulderfist found himself in a strange extradimensional place, with nothing but a handful of mercant's stalls and a barred heavy door with ornate carvings. "Where in Torag's beard is this place?" Tarov asks to noone in particular. This was going to be a very strange trip...

Physical Description:
Tarov is a tall, heavily-muscled dwarven man of great strength. He has black hair and brown eyes. His beard is well-kept and split into three short braids, a silver binding on each.

He wears a long-sleeved leather adventurer's outfit with heavy leather gloves and boots, with his armor over it.

Portrait of Tarov.

Personality:
Though Tarov comes across as gruff and unfriendly, he is actually just a dwarf who is dedicated to what he does. If he is told to do something, he will get it done, and heavens help any who try to stop or distract him. However, he can celebrate a job well done with the best of them, and he is quite jovial and friendly at such times.

Single-minded in every sense of the word when his mind is set on something, Tarov is not particularly charismatic. While he is a splendid strategist, his solutions to problems tend to be overly simplistic. Keep it simple, stupid is a favorite phrase of this dwarven man.

not much fluff up yet, and the crunch isn't finished either, but here is the start of my submission, a slayer/witch who will provide: strong melee combat, skill support (with trapfinding, and UMD), spell support (with healing), great resource management (melee attacks and hexes both don't really run out), good toughness, and solid writing/roleplaying ;)

(ps- this is nate lange's submission)
(pps- i took you up on your offer to make a 10rp race)
(ppps- i'll post again to let you know when he's finished)

at level four I will take the tumor familiar discovery (really hoping I can reflavor this somewhat as it's a tad gross but if not that's fine)

It has fast healing 5,
Think about what that'll do if you add it to your collective ;)

@rednal- i just realized we're already in a campaign together, too! i was one of the replacements recently recruited for shards of the titanswar. of course, with the post rate that seems to be normal in that game who knows how long it'll be before i actually get into game play... (i'm really looking forward to that though).

as for Elliomander here, still not much fluff up, but most of his crunch is there.

Four or more players may be workable on a tabletop... but in my experience, it just doesn't work very well in play by post games. Hence taking three or fewer in any game I run... XD; I like to keep things moving.

GM Rednal wrote:

Well, there goes my "buy a pack horse and leave it near the entrance" plan. I'm still thinking of some ways to better use 1000gp aside from potions. Maybe I'll just grab a wand of mage armor and be done with it...

Heal sticks are always useful at second level.

Tomorrow is the last day for applications if you'd like to get in! Remember to have your crunch, your fluff (<- major deciding factor), and a note on what roles you'd like to take. ^^

Dark Archive

I forgot if I mentioned Tarov's "role." He's going to be a melee frontliner and "tank" while also having a decent array of skills. His primary job will be to make sure bad things are looking at him, and not his companions. By beating them in the face with his weapon.

Cythraul wrote:

Maybe... if anyone else in the group can use it, cause I can't. I'll wait and see the final party before buying starting items.

@GM: will we be using the standard xp progression rate?

Yup, normal progression - though with 3 people instead of four or more, you'll still level a bit faster than normal. ^^

i have everything up... but for some reason the last spoiler won't open... i think i've surpassed the line limit :(

do you mind if i move the fluff to a google doc and just include a link in the profile?

That's fine. ^^

GM Rednal wrote:

in that case, i believe i'm all done- let me know if there's anything missing. commenting should be enabled on the google doc, so feel free to let me know what you think!

Cythraul Dig's background has been updated.

Roles:

Path: Archmage/Guardian

Roles: melee dpr, tank, arcane caster

Forgot a backstory
Here you go
One intentionally somewhat cliche backstory coming up

Chris Ferrel had, for many years, longed to be a profesional monster slayer. Ever since his parents and younger sister were eaten by ogers, he threw himself into training. He trained in every deadly technique he could think of, from swordsmanship and anatomy to magic and alchemy, even weapon smithing, Chris was determined to learn them all, so he did. If he ever managed to get his hands on a gun, he'd practice and learn that skill too.
A few years after his parent's death a small village of ogers attacked the town.
Chris immiedietly volonteered to lead the counter attack. Between him and 3 town guards they sacked the village, allowing the women and children to leave for the most part, but killing all the warriors. As the fight raged on two of the warriors he brought with him died, and he himself was greviously injured, though the ogers themselves had been eradicated with their homes burned to ash.
Bolstered by this victory, though ashamed at his condition afterwards, Chris threw himself back into training, determined to be the best monster slayer ever, who knows maybe he'd get famous.

All finished, expect a little bit of silliness from this guy, but not so silly that he gets people in trouble. In a way, a guy with personality.

Recruitment is now closed, and the following characters have been selected:

Cythraul Dig
Elliomander Ostarian
Jason Fury

Report to the discussion thread! You have an assignment. ^^ Everyone else, thanks for applying!

This saddens me
Congrats to the Lucky few
If anyone dies/drops out I'd love a pm about it

Boo. Ah well. Congrats to the lucky three! Have fun with it :)

Aaaaaaaaaaaand recruitment is open again!

One of our players has dropped due to RL issues, and I'd like to bring the party back up to three. ^^

I have a ranger/cleric I would just have to rework for the campaign I can have ready tonight.
