As Jason ducks under the last attack, he uses the momentum as he rises to do an uppercut at the creature and continues to jump, spin then kick at it at the chest.

Attk 1: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 2 = 14 | Dmg: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Attk 2: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 2 = 17 | Dmg: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

This is one tough beast...

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander positions himself to keep the beast pinned between his allies and takes another mighty swing with his glaive

power attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
for: 1d10 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

Female Tiefling Phantom Blade | HP: 11 | AC: 17, T: 13, FF: 14 | Fort: +4, Ref: +3, Will: +5 | BAB: +0, CMB: +1, CMD: 14 | Init: +3 | Perception: +6 |

Cythraul continues her assualt, again weaving sword and sorcery into a combined assault, neither attack seeming to find purchase on the beast.

Rhoka: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Rhoka: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

The creature lives even after Jason's strike... but Cythraul's blow is the last bit of force it can take, and the strange beast collapses to the ground, beaten.

No treasure, but you did earn 200 XP each.

Now that the creature is dead, you have the opportunity to look around. On the western wall, there are two doors - the one you entered from and another a bit further north. It seems to be a stuck strong wooden door (break DC 23; hard 5, 20 hp), though the actual northern door is an unlocked wooden door. Directly to the east is an open archway leading to the next chamber.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander quickly positions himself in the open archway with his glaive at the ready. He scans for traps on the way and then assesses the next chamber.

perception for traps: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
perception for the next room: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23

Male Stormborn Sorcerer 3 / Flowing Monk 3 (Archmage T1) | HP: 27/27 | Spells: 5/6 | Mythic Power: 5/5 | AC: 19, T: 15, FF: 17 | Fort: +3, Ref: +5, Will: +6 | BAB: +2, CMB: +5, CMD: 20 | Init: +4 | Perception: +10 | Concentration +8 | Load: 37.5 (Light: 58) | Effects: Mage Armor

"All these trapped doors and stuff looks tough. I haven't seen so much in one place before..." says Jason as he waits patiently behind Elliomander.

The room through the next archway seems to be completely deserted. There is, however, a stuck simple wooden door (break DC 13; hard 5, 10 hp) to the east, and another archway to the north - though this one seems to lead into a hall instead of a room.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Discovering no immediate threats in the next chamber, Elliomander returns to the chamber where Cy waits with the beast's corpse. He takes his time searching the unlocked door on the north wall for traps take 20 on perception, before opening it and quietly slipping through assuming he finds none to conduct a careful search of the hallway as well taking 20 again.

stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
perception checks = 29

Male Stormborn Sorcerer 3 / Flowing Monk 3 (Archmage T1) | HP: 27/27 | Spells: 5/6 | Mythic Power: 5/5 | AC: 19, T: 15, FF: 17 | Fort: +3, Ref: +5, Will: +6 | BAB: +2, CMB: +5, CMD: 20 | Init: +4 | Perception: +10 | Concentration +8 | Load: 37.5 (Light: 58) | Effects: Mage Armor

Jason cautiously follows Elliomander. As he walks, he looks over to the female tiefling and asks "Isn't there a spell that can help us look for traps? It might be easier to prepare something like that than doing all this searching. My armor spell won't last long this way..."

If I take 20 on perception as well, can we cut the time in half with me and Elliomander searching? My take 20 would be 29.

Female Tiefling Phantom Blade | HP: 11 | AC: 17, T: 13, FF: 14 | Fort: +4, Ref: +3, Will: +5 | BAB: +0, CMB: +1, CMD: 14 | Init: +3 | Perception: +6 |

Cythraul shrugs, sorry no spells for traps at the moment, and my armor spell won't last long either.

We should all be equally adept at searching for traps when we find a room with multiple doors. That should save us some time. Alternately, when we get the chance, pick up Unseen Servent or arrange to summon monsters.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"Or get some armor... it would take a great many castings to check every door on this map for traps... even a wand wouldn't last long... perhaps a wand of Mage Armor would be a good option..."

sorry, that's the 8 Cha talking. The reason I wasn't taking 20 to begin with was to try not to burn through Mage Armor but these traps are too dangerous not to take 20. Looking through his rudeness, the advice to consider a wand of Mage Armor might actually be good. All taking 20 on different things is a great idea too.

Female Tiefling Phantom Blade | HP: 11 | AC: 17, T: 13, FF: 14 | Fort: +4, Ref: +3, Will: +5 | BAB: +0, CMB: +1, CMD: 14 | Init: +3 | Perception: +6 |

As soon as we get our first tier, I'll have Enduring Armor

Just to note, Taking 20 includes the idea that you will fail repeatedly before succeeding... and there are traps that are triggered if you fail the first time. Those will pretty much always go off if you're Taking 20 to search for them.

There are no traps on the northern door of the room - but the next door is a locked simple wooden door (Open Lock DC 25, break DC 15; hard 5, 10 hp), and would definitely need to be picked or broken open somehow if you wanted to advance in that direction.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

thanks for that heads up... I've never seen it adjudicated that way so that would have been a huge surprise (I've never played with a GM who triggered traps on a failed perception check before, it's always been that you had to move somewhere or open something or whatever). Back to making rolls I guess... And taking turns searching so we spread the damage around...

Still trying to be quiet, Elliomander signals his new comrades to be ready to rush into the room and when they appear to be he attempts to kick the door in.
Str check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Then scowls harshly at his own failure.

wait... so does that mean that when I get the trap spotter talent and get free perception checks against traps at 10' if I fail that check the trap will trigger 10' away from us?

Male Stormborn Sorcerer 3 / Flowing Monk 3 (Archmage T1) | HP: 27/27 | Spells: 5/6 | Mythic Power: 5/5 | AC: 19, T: 15, FF: 17 | Fort: +3, Ref: +5, Will: +6 | BAB: +2, CMB: +5, CMD: 20 | Init: +4 | Perception: +10 | Concentration +8 | Load: 37.5 (Light: 58) | Effects: Mage Armor

I find it odd for a trap to trigger just by looking at/for it, but I can roll with that.

STR Check vs Door: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

I know I can be stronger than this...

Female Tiefling Phantom Blade | HP: 11 | AC: 17, T: 13, FF: 14 | Fort: +4, Ref: +3, Will: +5 | BAB: +0, CMB: +1, CMD: 14 | Init: +3 | Perception: +6 |

Watching her companions throw themselves against the door, Cythraul walks over, slowing removing a set of lockpicks from her pouch.

Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

More like trigger it as you move close enough (or whatever its criteria is) - basically, though, I think constantly Taking 20 and succeeding at spotting everything takes the surprise out of exploration, while random results help to keep you on your toes and provide more of a sense of danger and anticipation. There's really no plot here, so I have to do what I can to help you look forward to what happens next.

There's a dull click, but the door doesn't swing open after Cythraul's attempts to pick it - nor does it budge after it's slammed a few times, proving obstinately resilient in the face of those trying to stop it from doing its duty.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"Well... Anything in there knows we're coming now..." Elliomander says still looking rather dour, "so be prepared..."

Str check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
He then steps forward and with one more mighty kick he smashes the door open and levels his glaive to deal with any enemies that might come charging forward.

Initiative (Enemy): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Initiative (Cythraul): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Initiative (Elliomander): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Initiative (Jason): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

As it turns out, there is a creature in the chamber - though you don't catch it by surprise, and it's on the far side of the room. It appears to be an unusually large rodent of some kind - though still smaller than you are - though it's in the opposite corner of the room and not quite within easy reach.

No surprise round.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander steps into the room to allow his companions access 5' step, studies the creature for a moment move action- studied target, and knowledge check, mutters his increasingly familiar hex slumber, DC 16 will and then readies his glaive to strike if the creature is foolish enough to try to close into melee.

"So tell me, Jason," his says casually in the midst of the action, "do you have any ability with locks? It seems both Cythraul and I do..."

Cythraul advances towards the center of the room, assuming a defensive stance as she prepares for the rats charge.

Move to middle of the room, full defensive.

"Unfortunately, no... my hands are refined with the art of the winds. Its flows and eddies are at my command and it is there that I call forth my powers..." says Jason. As if to prove it so, he twirls his right hand as a small whirlwind is called forth. It spins faster and faster until a bolt of lightning expends its energies and arcs towards Jason's hand.

Jason continues to move his hand and gently palms Eliommander's glaive which glows with electric energy.

Move: Just behind Elli.
Standard: Cast Thunderstaff (grants weapon SHOCK property for 1 ROUND)

Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

The hex failed to truly settle over the creature - and in response, its body simply twisted in mid-air, forming into the shape of a man that snapped up a crossbow and fired a bolt, aiming it towards Jason.

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 for Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4

It wasn't a terrible shot... but it wasn't good enough to hit, and an audible curse could be heard from the resident of this room.

Female Tiefling Phantom Blade | HP: 11 | AC: 17, T: 13, FF: 14 | Fort: +4, Ref: +3, Will: +5 | BAB: +0, CMB: +1, CMD: 14 | Init: +3 | Perception: +6 |

Facing a shapeshifter, Cythraul calls upon her demonic heritage, shrouding the room in darkness.

Arcane pool: +1 rhoka, Darkness on Cythraul, move to melee

I believe all three of us have darkvision, we should be fine.

Elliomander darts forward through the darkness and brings his glaive down hard at the shapeshifter...

@Elli: No problem. Your normal damage is already staggering as it is LOL

I still have no idea what this creature is, but I don't care anymore. He's going down!!!

Jason sidesteps to the left and runs forward to thrust his hand straight into the creature's throat.

Attk: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Dmg: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

However, Jason's eyes have not yet adjusted to the new darkness Cythraul has called into the room...

While Jason's blow came nowhere close to hitting, Elliomander's strike lands solidly. It isn't quite enough to drop the creature - though it's clearly very wounded - and the monster turns on Jason to attack with a savage bite.

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22 for Damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Its teeth sink in, ripping at flesh... and a curse begins to flow into Jason's body.

Does it have darkvision? If not, it is effectively blind (50% miss chance).

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

darkness just lowers the light level 1 step (to dim), so it would be 20% miss chance...

Elliomander carefully positions himself opposite Jason to divide the creature's attention move to flank and makes another broad, powerful chop with his glaive.

We are underground/in an enclosed area; Darkness suppresses all light sources of 2nd level and lower.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

hmmm... I was thinking of lowering the light level from the torches, but you make an interesting point- if they function as a light spell or something similar they would be suppressed

Enemies are occasionally adjusted in order to provide a better challenge. ^^ Templates, class levels, race... many options are available, and I do take advantage of them to liven up the game.

Narrowly evading the curse - which, honestly, was probably for the best - Jason manages to stand his ground as the other attacks bring the creature down. It slumps to the floor, dead, and you're able to look around the room. There's a door on the western wall - apparently unlocked - and far more importantly, the enemy seems to have built up a collection of treasure in the corner.

Included here: 12 gp and 130 sp, an Agate (10 gp), an Onyx (55 gp), a Shell (8 gp), a Masterwork Longsword (315 gp), an Oil of Light (25 gp), and a Potion of Cure Light Wounds (50 gp).

Oh, and 200 XP each.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

"Cyth, can you listen at the door?" Elliomander asks gesturing at the western door while he gathers the treasures into his backpack.

"If there's no immediate danger," he continues, "give the word and I'll heal some of Jason's wounds... I'd prefer not to remove my armor though if there's something waiting for us behind that door."

'Group Loot' spoiler added to my profile, and updated.

Cythraul moves over to the door listening carefully as Elliomander moves to heal Jason.

"Thank you Elliomander, there's a few scratches left but a good night's rest can repair that easily enough." says Jason. He helps Elliomander put back his armor before proceeding to stand behind Cythraul.

It would be much easier if there was a place to stand on - as Cythraul approaches the door, there's a loud clicking sound, and the floor starts to give way!

Reflex (Cythraul): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Unfortunately, she isn't quite fast enough to move out of the way, and the spikes within the pit are looking quite nasty...

Falling Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Spikes: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Spike: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 for Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Spike: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14 for Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Two of them successfully strike Cythraul and dig into her body, and they're on top of the injury from having to fall... though, on the bright side, at least the third spike in the falling area wasn't positioned in a place to strike. On the downside, Cythraul's now in a ten-feet deep pit, and you'll need to maneuver carefully to actually get into the next room...

Another one!? What the hell is up in this place???

"Cythraul, can you manage to hold on to this rope? We can pull you back up." Jason quickly unpacks his rope, loops one end so Cythraul can grab it much easier and throws that end into the pit. He readies himself to start pulling "Help me out here Elli, Cyth needs our help!" Jason will wait for Elliomander to grab the rope before he starts pulling.

Cursing as she lands on the spikes, Cythraul pulls out a wand and uses it on herself, carefully putting it away before climbing up the rope.

Infernal Healing, Take 10 on the climb = 15

Thank you Jason, that will teach me to be more careful in this place.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

Elliomander assists Jason with the rope, though it seems unnecessary. In response to Cyth's comment he adds, "I think we'd all do well to be mindful of every step we take in this place..." and make lots of perception checks...

"To make matters worse, that is the only door into that room... So we shall have to find some way to open it even with the pit in the way... Any objections to brute force?"

if nobody objects, I'll stand on the far side of the pit and break down the door with my glaive. GM- feel free to make damage rolls if the number of rounds it takes matters (1d10+9)

Nah, as long as you can actually damage them, bashing through doors is just a matter of time. Rolling for that is a bit silly - feel free to simply note that you're breaking it down and leave it at that.

Fighter/Investigator [gestalt] 1

I mostly just put that out there because if we do it when there are intelligent enemies nearby they may come to see what's happening... or start buffing and readying actions, lol

Elliomander waits only a moment for objections and, finding none quickly voiced, smashes down the door with a few forceful swings of his glaive.

"I think with a running start," he says backing up, "we should all be able to clear this gap fairly easily..." As he finishes speaking he runs forward and easily leaps to the other side. Even on a 1 I can clear more than 5'
