I think I might modify my submission a bit, if that is ok. I am thinking maybe switching the race to Tiefling to make the character a bit more conventional as we already have a healthy dose of the strange. So maybe a washed up investigator who spends too much time in taverns these days?

Any thoughts on that, GM or fellow PCs? Essentially, I want to be able to make the best story overall as a group, since Planescape is pretty heavy on the narrative.


I'd agree a Modron is a little out-there heavy. But if you really wanted to play one I'd be ok with it. I think I would enjoy playing alongside Box. The strange is ok if it makes sense and is well-realised. C'mon - I wanted to play a Bariaur initially. I just found I couldn't really empathize with being four footed, or half humanoid half equestrian/goat. ;) If you have a good grasp of Box then I say go for it...

If not, an ale-happy Tiefling investigator could be good.

It's not like you are considering playing a dwarf, gnome or halfling. That would be an outlandish bridge too far. (Don't worry Urgitz, Spriggan is different enough for me to be ok with. ;)

Also note that I'm not planning on playing Attai as the "kooky chaos/random chance man" trope oft played by gnomes. Although Attai is a Harrow-freak and dresses somewhat oddly, he's fairly studious, interested and down to earth. Or as down to earth as you can get in Sigil...


Playing a modron is conventional for planescape. It just has a more restrictive RP style. No grasp on humor or sarcasm. minor emotional responses at best

Please play whatever holds your interest the most.

Hmm... Yeah, I think I have a similar issue as your Bariaur. I love the build and concept, but it seems tricky to keep going for long-term without becoming one-note.

Definitely appreciated the chance to tool around with the race builder though, so thanks for that Litany :). But I'll quickly rework the stats into a Tiefling and have that posted later today.

Investigator Wealth: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4) = 12x10 = 120gp

Couple of things I wanted to run by you to ensure it is ok:

Somewhat long block of text:

Personality-wise I had something in mind along the lines of a Hellboy/Wolverine type only more intellectual. He was never fully accepted by others, far older than he appears, and somewhat washed up compared to his prime. A mere shadow of his former potential who gave up dreams of greatness long ago. At least that is, until he got involved with the party.

With that in mind, I was hoping to use the middle-age adjustments (-1 to all phys stats, and +1 to all mental stats)

I was also hoping to replace the Darkness SLA with the scent ability from the variant tiefling ability table (p.17 #54) in Blood of Fiends. That is ssuming you don't think that would be too out of line with general character power.

Also for traits, I was hoping to pick Pragmatic Activator (UMD checks are Int based) from Ultimate Campaign, and Clever Wordplay (Bluff checks are Int based) from Pathfinder Society Primer as both fit my character concept and the archetype I chose. If either or both of those are not ok to pick, I will more than happily choose different options from the sources listed.

Offsetting my traits will be the rather substantial drawback of tainted spirit: "When you were a child, a parent or other person with authority over you made a minor pact with a fiend on your behalf, stealing some of your vitality in exchange for a minor boon. At the end of any combat, you must attempt a Fortitude saving throw. The DC is 10 + the number of rounds you acted in combat. If you fail this save, you become fatigued for 10 minutes per round you acted during that encounter." Which I think will provide some fun role-play options.

Bit of a Backstory:

Glyphimor has been banging around the Cage for more than a century, and if the rumours are true, he is a fair bit older than the 217 he claims. A tiefling born to a elven woman from the material plane, both were immediately outcast due to his ram horns and devilish tail. She did not live long enough to see him to adulthood, and the half-elf/half-outsider raised himself always looking for a road to redemption and greatness.

Having heard stories of his outsider father and the planes beyond, Glyphimor spent much of his young adulthood studying and training while looking for a way off the material plane. When he finally arrived in Sigil with a party of pilgrims and explorers, he set out to make a name for himself and to prove his worth. If he could become someone of importance here, then he would be able to prove to his elven ancestors that they were wrong to reject him.

Disaster struck in a foray into the Blood Wars. Out of the sorry group of berks who traveled to make themselves a legend, Glyphimor was the only one to make it out alive. He came back to Sigil changed and no longer carrying for his legacy, the would be family on the material plane, or any desire to better himself. Seeing nothing but futility in the spinning of the great cosmos, he resigned himself to live out the rest of his days in Sigil. In the Cage he became something of a fixture and familiar face in several taverns. Most importantly he became well versed in the cant, the chant, and the most potent spirits. For the last 120+ years, he has done little but be a drunk and source of wallow. Some say he still has the gift for knowledge, magic, and a hint of swordplay, but few still living in Sigil can attest to ever having seen those talents displayed.

For a personality think something between Hellboy and Wolverine without all the muscle to back it up and a heap load more intelligence. And although he would never admit such blasphemy, he has a rather large soft side and a deep seeded desire to care for and help out others. It is just buried below many, many layers of gruff.


Well sinc eI'm practically in anyway let me make an alias and get a very absic backstory in. I think I want Xaoc to be a character whose past develops as I figure him out.


Very BAsic BAckstory.

Xaoc doesn't understand why he is. But he think he has learned enough about the planes and magic itself to understand how he came to be. Limbo holds within itself all possibilities. By it's very nature sooner or later one or more pieces of itself form into loose patterns that can more or less be described as thought, behavior, or the very basics of morality. Get enough of these patterns together and you can get soemthign resembling sentience.

Xaoc believes that he came to be when a portal from Limbo into sigil sucked in one or more of these patterns and dmped them unceremoniously onto the stones.

THat's when Xaoc became "aware" without the influence of limbo to consume adn change the patterns once more Xaoc came into being a creature of thought and intelligence made from the pure chaotic matter of Limbo.

Ever since Xaoc has simply tried to learn what it is to exist. Love, life, hate, sex, food, adventure, pain, anything and everything one can experience. He's decided to leanr magic, but not the base magic of books and bloodlines but the pure unbridled potential of the Art itself.

Xaoc is curious, reckless, and prone to bouts of passion and melancholy as unpredictable as a rhino.

Sorry about vanishing... A wild wedding appeared that I had to help deal with.

While I am still very much interested in this, it seems you have a good base group to draw from, and though I have several concepts I'd like to try, they have been rather stubbornly resisting my efforts to distill them down to a sensible race/class build. Consequently, I will be backing out of the player pool for now and contenting myself with reading along.

Added a basic background to Urgitz. Pretty generic, with planescape I figure that most unusual backgrounds in regular games are pretty tame. Better to build off what happens then try to build in stuff before it starts.

By the way, is it starting Saturday the 4th or Monday the 6th?
