The Celestial Bureaucracy |
Round 2 - The Heroes
Sorin, Garand and Izumi rush to close in on the corbies.
Raith continues to focus on the dire corby slashing for its neck and stomach. He finds an opening and slips in a terrible blow.
Pavel curses, drawing his longsword and swinging at his opponent and slicing across its shoulder.
Round 2 - Corby 2
The corby dives in low at Raith, claws looking for an opening.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16; 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Raith steps back enough to avoid the natural weapons.
Round 3 - Corby 1
It shrieks in pain and pivot slicing in a downward arc, aiming for the throat.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8; 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12; 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Pavel sidesteps on his right and the blow hits air only.

Round 3 - The Heroes
As the corby dives low, Raith's blade comes down on its neck in a twin cross cut. One blow bites deep in the beast’s chest.
Pavel swings his blade once more at the dire corby, following it up with a shield slam. The sword goes through the beast and it slumps on the floor, lifeless.
Izumi continues to run at breakneck pace towards the battle.
Garand pushes through towards the melee.

Sorin Saldward |
"You know, the bird-man was trying to get through this door specifically. I wonder if he had allies close by on the other side of the door? If so, a surprise attack through this way may allow us to fall upon any remaining enemies before they can respond."
Sorin Saldward |
"I don't want to just leave your bear outside. I cannot imagine that these creatures would not harm him if he is discovered."
Garand Stone-of-the-Moon |
"We can certainly give it a shot. He's not too heavy, we might be able to just haul him up."
Bear or not, he's smaller than a medium-sized guard dog, so he probably only weighs 50 lbs...
"Let's do it quickly, we have no idea how long these crow-men's guard shifts are and when replacements will arrive."
The Celestial Bureaucracy |
You enter a circular chamber, heavily furnished. Along the circular walls are two staircases on opposite sides. One leading up, the other down. This chamber’s furniture—couches, drawing tables, and empty bookshelves—lie in disarray, with the exception of one writing desk and chair in the center of the room, its surface heaped with pages of parchment and paper.
A single door in the a corner leads south. No sound from the other side.
For the purpose of saving some time, let me know who usually checks doors. If there's anything, I'll do the rolls in a spoiler.
Izumi Chosokate |
If we're going for super-stealth, Izumi should stay in the back. Otherwise, I reckon Izumi should take the lead (highest strength to bash down doors, highest AC).
Izumi follows his friends into the room, peering around at the contents. He couldn't imagine the corbies sitting at a desk writing, and so it is the writing desk that piques his curiosity. Izumi will go to examine the desk.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Sorin Saldward |
As if drawn by a lodestone, or as if enthralled, Sorin moves to the writing desk, muttering quietly to himself as he approaches and begins rifling though the papers. He seems to be moving carefully, almost reverently as he handles the old parchment. Sorin almost shoves the larger Izumi aside as he also leafs through the papers, then he seems to forget that Izumi is even there.
Detect magic, then start working through the papers on the desk. Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
The Celestial Bureaucracy |
The pages on the desk are covered with dense scribblings and revisions in messy Tien writing. The writing is recent, though very hard to read. You can make from your deciphering that it looks like a nonsensical play about a family of crows that turn into bitter, insane humans. No magic radiates from the area.
The rest of the room is nothing but a ramshackle of old furnitures.
Sorin Saldward |
"Nothing...just gibberish and drivel." Sorin says, his voice heavy with disgust. "I think that those bird things wrote this as all this ink is relatively fresh...which means that they speak Tien...which actually is curious." Sorin has a pensive look on his face as he reloads his crossbow and watches Raith and Pavel at work.
The Celestial Bureaucracy |
Sorin Saldward |
Nice of the birds to keep the place up. They must be planning to stay for a while, otherwise why would they be cleaning. They aren't on a quick raid then...
Raith Shadar |
Raith looks at Izumi. He nods his head towards the door and whispers, "Let's rile the place up a little."He smiles, "You're not so quiet in the steel suit anyhow. That steel suit and blade works better when you're in front."
Raith's going to delay until Izumi and Pavel engage. Let Izumi get some action this time.
The Celestial Bureaucracy |
I'm guessing this won't be a stealth attack then. You can all post your surprise round action if that's the case, keeping in mind that no one has a line of sight except the first one in the doorway. You can all start from one or two squares behind though, but you can't all end up in the same square.
Sorin Saldward |
"I just hope that there isn't an overwhelming number out of sight then. I expect that we will rouse the rest of the fortress with this attack. Do you think that we should make sure that we have a secure line of retreat before we make the assault? I think that there are stairs going down. If there is another door down there, we could get flanked and pinned," Sorin whispers to the group.
Raith Shadar |
"If they haven't heard us fighting, they probably aren't going to hear us", says Raith. "No offense. But Izumi is about as quiet as wind chimes and you walk like a cow."
Battle is a -10 Perception check. Only reason the other guys didn't hear had to be distance and the door. Place seems to have minimal activity. Might as well let Izumi do some fighting, we'll kill faster that way. Something bad happens, we move back to the door and block it. Run back along the battlements and out the front gate which seemed to have no one near it.
