We're not working real well tactically at the moment. Pavel's enlargement would not have occurred until the start of Sorin's next turn. Enlarge Person is a 1 round casting time, same as Summon Monster. I have to spend a round to disengage because I can no longer attack the ogre due to the enlargment. Izumi is out of easy heal range as well. Hopefully he can withstand a hit or two.

Changing my action. If Pavel can 5 foot step to G.5/5.5. I should be able to move into attack. I'm going to stay where I'm at. Use Total Defense and wait for Pavel to move.

Good catch on Enlarge Person.
Some confusion. Mostly my bad.

Round 2 Clarifications
Izumi got up after his horse crashed, but was left open to an attack before he could hit:

The club hits squarely Izumi (-16 hp), but he strikes back, opening the bast's belly from side to side. The ogre yells in pain.

Round 3 Clarifications
I'm ruling that Pavel steps back 5 feet after his attack. That leaves room for others to slip in on round 3. Raith doesn't have to wait. That should balance things out.

Sorry to everyone for my spell mistake. I did not re-read the spell before casting it, and I hadn't done it correctly the last few times I cast it. The dog is going to move to h/3 granting the flanking bonus to his attacks and Raith's. Raith is also the only one with room to grow now that everyone is bunched together, so Raith is the target of the Enlarge Person. I don't see anything that would be a problem with this, the spell target should be chosen at the completion of the casting duration. I just farked this one up because I thought the duration was one standard action.

Enlarge Person: Raith
Finally completing the complex spell, Sorin looks up to see where his companions are positioned before making a snap decision. The tendrils if the spell coil like a silver snake across Sorin's hand before rolling into a small, seed-like ball. Taking careful aim, he makes a motion like flicking an apple pip, causing the glittering seed to flip through the air and land on Raith's shoulder. In an instant the seed sprouts, and as the tendrils expand, so does Raith, until his head brushes the lower branches and his two blades are nearly as long as the leg of the horse. As soon as the growth ends, the silver vines fall away as glittering motes and vanish.

The glittering hound sidles to its right, a trail of glittering flecks rising like embers from its fur as it moves through the brush, trying to get behind the ogre. It snarls and bares its fangs before leaping at the hamstrings of the creature.

Sorry Sorin, but changing the Enlarge will confuse things more. I will stick with Pavel enlarged, and stepping back so others can join.

Round 3 - The Companions
Pavel swings his great weapons in retaliation. His shield connects with the ogre’s hip, injuring it somehow. "Suh'somebody back up Izumi, thuh'this won't be too quick and he's all on his own!" Pavel then steps back to let others attack as well.

Back on his feet again, Izumi takes no time to mourn the death of the horse and whirls around, slashing the injured Ogre in front of him, but blow sails wide. Hearing Pavel call for someone to support him, Izumi shouts back: "I'm fine! Just a little winded from the fall!"

Garand steps forward a pace, calling upon the spirits of the living world to assault the ogre. Bear-spirit continues to attack, attempting to tear into the tree trunk sized leg before him. The bear connects powerfully and lashes and slashes at the ogre, thick blood dripping from its legs.

Raith slides forward falling into the Crane Stance and delivers two quick slices to the ogre’s legs with his temple sword. The second one slices through, injuring the monster’s knee.

The glittering hound sidles to its right, a trail of glittering flecks rising like embers from its fur as it moves through the brush, trying to get behind the ogre. It snarls and bares its fangs before leaping at the hamstrings of the creature.

Yet, through it, you can see another emotion grow like an unstoppable tide, for the ogres fear death as well as any man. But then, they immediately turn tail and run through the thick of the forest.

The ogres make good of their escape, fleeing in the thick of Churlwood. As you hurry back to protect Am... I mean the caravan.

Ogres are on the run there too. One lays on the ground, the others you hear running through the woods.

Sandru is lightly injured, and Koya is stuck to her wagon by her big javelin that went through her shoulder. She's pale but smiling still. Her breaking voice loud as she complains: "I should've seen'em comin'! Now look at me! Get me free so I can get to Sandru."

Izumi arrives a bit later than the rest of the group, the armour slowing him. He had heard the giant Pavel suggest pushing the chase. Izumi calls out as he approaches, then returns to a normal speaking voice as he joins the group. "I wouldn't suggest giving chase. The best thing we can do is get through their territory as fast as we can."

All this time, Ameiko and Koya have kept silent, though they listen with great interest and seem to be wondering themselves.

Shalelu answers Raith's question: "I can't say for sure. Five attacked us, with one dead and four retreating. I heard you met two, so that's six wounded."

Sandru's voice then raises: "Six! And we don't know if they have a chief or shaman in there!? No, this is too risky. I'm the pilot and I'll have to put my foot down and play the fiddle: we move, now." He then starts preparing the horses, visibly unhappy.

Izumi is torn between duty to others and duty to their cause. If they left the ogres, the beasts might attack a caravan less able to defend themselves. However, Sandru had a point as well. They're were not aimlessly wandering the wilderness here. He glances at Ameiko, then remembers something. Glory. What would impress Ameiko more than charging into a den of ogres and coming out alive. He says loudly:

"I'm with Shalelu. We can defend ourselves well enough, but what if the ogres attack a less-defended caravan and slaughters them. I would rather be rid of the beasts. We may have a mission, but I would say that our mission is less important than the potential lives of our countrymen. We should take the fight to the ogres while they are still recovering." Typically we would have ten to fifteen wagons and ten guards, with all the drivers armed with bows. That is the norm, not this small grouping of three wagons. We were trusting to luck and skill to get us through the Churlwood safely, essentially we were gambling. Those who take the gamble, pay the price for their failure."

"Furthermore this is not Galt. We are not ruled by the mob. We have a captain who's job is to get us through to the destination in one piece. If we allow ourselves to get divided, we will simply be easier prey for the next predator down the road."

"If you don't agree with Sandru or you feel that someone else needs to be captain, then we can discuss this later, in Roderic's Cove. A change in leadership while among hostiles can only lead to disaster."

Why I must be the one that says this, I do not know, but if I must use logic as a club, so be it", Sorin says, strong disappointment in his voice.

"If we go to the cave and find ourselves overmatched and defeated, who will protect the caravan? Who will keep Koya and our young drivers safe? A few goblins would be a serious threat to such a reduced group." Sorin turns and looks at Izumi, Raith and Garand. "We have a duty and an obligation to help protect these people: Koya, Bevelek, Vankor, Sandru and Ameiko. If we are dead or injured, we will not be able to do that."

If Sorin keeps talking about the community and taking care of the weak like this, he is going to have to change alignment to LG and we all know its a slippery slope to paladin from there...lol

Tension builds and voices are raised, then Ameiko steps forward. First she looks at Koya as she echoes her words: "Friends! Friends... And I would not be here as well for my old and new friends, who chose selflessly to accompany me, risking neck and skin in a forsaken country, for me..." As she speaks, her warm eyes set upon each of you, a slight smile appearing when she looks at both Raith and Izumi.

"Indeed we are here, faced with a dilemma as Koya put it, a possible threat, indeed a certain threat to other travellers. Yet dealing with that threat puts the caravan at risk. A threat for a threat, so to speak..." She looks down. "We are here because of me. We will face many risks on our journey I believe, and we must be as one to face them... So I will rally with Sandru. I'm sorry Shalelu, but he's our pilot, and we must defer to his wisdom and judgement. But..." She looks back up at the lot of you. Izumi's reverie is broken when Pavel claps his hands. Even without the stutter Pavel would be mispronouncing it. "Tsuyoi." Izumi corrects, putting slightly more emphasis on the 't'. "Poor thing.. Dogs, thuh'they'll usually just follow yer orders wuh'once you show 'em who's boss and who's got the truh'treats. Horses, they ain't as much luh'like that. Puh'part of it's showing them who's in charge, but it's also shuh'showin' that you got their interests in mind- thuh'that you know each other. So you gotta bu'build trust, right? They're a little more like puh'people that way."

Sandru exhales softly, then his eyes get that shine back as he whistles: "Ah'ight then! Let's get this snail going! Everyone to your wagon! Keeps your eyes peeled! Pavel! Get up front! Nice and silent! ... M-right!" He then moves to the front of the caravan.

Meanwhile, Shalelu walks up to Ameiko. They face each other for but a second, when Shalelu snaps one of Ameiko's scarves: "Very well then..." She walks to a nearby tree and wraps the scarf around it. "We'll have to come back for it..." Ameiko smiles and slaps the ranger on the shoulder. Shalelu hides a smile as she moves to the front...

The rest of the day is spent under stress, as the forest grows thick and the way more treacherous. You can tell bandits are around from marks of previous battles and a recently burned wagon.

Night is upon you as you stop and set camp...

I'll go with whatever watch order is set up. We have no darkvision users amongst us, but hopefully we have ample torches and lanterns. I imagine Sorin and Garand need to rest to recover spells. So they should take either first or last watch so they don't have broken sleep.

Casters don't need continuous rest anymore - one thing they changed in Pathfinder. As long as the total is 8 hours of rest.

Izumi will offer to take the midnight watch again, meaning as soon as the camp is made he will head to bed. Before he does so, he seeks out Koya: "Lady Koya, if I might impose, I would feel much better if I were to receive the Song of Sphere's blessing of healing. I though the wound was superficial at first, but it seems that ogre knows how to put his weight into the swing."

With that, Izumi will head to bed.

Koya smiles: "For sure they do! Let me ask for Desna to help your steps be lighter and your journey longer." She softly mutters a few words and her hand flexes then extends to touch your heart. A serenity fills you as you feel your very flesh softly mend. Little stars appear and disappear in your vision, as when you feel dizzy, but the feeling is not of disorientation, but of certainty.

"Rest well. Tomorrow, we hunt ogres!" Her eyes shine with energy as she says those words. Koya has seen her share of battle it seems, and is looking forward to more, despite her frail frame and advanced age.

Garand will once again offer healing to any who need it, using up his daily allotment of healing before turning in, if need be.

I will try to pay attention to people's injuries during combat, but I'm not as likely to check everyone's profiles regularly to see who needs healing, so do speak up!

It was an excuse to talk to Koya :)

Izumi feels a sense of peace after having been healed, but that doesn't prevent his grinning. "Will you be joining us on the hunt Lady?"

"Well son, would you have me? Some say I'm too old to be traveling this far north, yet here I am. Some would also say that I'm too old to go ogre hunting... What do you think? What will happen if you're lucky enough to get old?"

She has a sly smile, as if memories of past discussions and mischief flooding through her mind. Some would call it wisdom perhaps...

Sorin comments as he walks by on his watch circuit around the camp, "Old in body but not in spirit." He keeps going, crossbow loaded and at the ready, his elven blood helping him see into the gloom of the fast fading sunlight.

In the morning, Garand will approach Sorin privately.

"I have drunk deep of your words, and let them sit in my belly for a time, as I did not wish to reply in haste." he says, seeming overly serious and formal, even for a Shoanti. "I feel that we are exceptional people, perhaps skilled with a rare talent for arcane magic, or able to commune with spirits of beast and sky, while still others," he gestures to Raith and / or Izumi, "are students of exotic fighting styles from distant lands, or..." he seems at a loss, losing the thread of his sentence, looking at Pavel, "or have other skills."

"In any event, I feel that these advantages come with a responsibility, to those who are not so blessed. The ogres are dangerous to us, yes, but they are a greater threat to those who lack our gifts and our talents. I do not believe that I was given breath so that I might be 'safe,' and avoid risk, and allow dangers to remain to threaten others, who would be less able to overcome them."

"Yesterday, you suggested that your path was the logical one, and that my words lacked wisdom. I cannot answer to those charges, but I do believe that my choice, to finish what we had started and remove the threat, root and branch, rather than continue on our way and leave this danger for others to face in our stead, was the moral one, if not necessarily the logical choice, or the wise choice, or the safe choice."

Pavel spends much of his time when not on guard duty or scouting seeing to the caravan's horses and training Ogre to keep his head during battle.

Though the night fills with the sound of nocturnal activity, leaving you on edge, it goes without disturbance.

Morning finds you with hearty smoked sausage and some warm cereal, Sandru claims, hails from Taldor.

You proceed to the edge of Roderic's Cove and Shalelu, who had perhaps taken her role as advanced scout a little too liberally, is already there waiting with horses: "I'll pay for those. Let's go!"

Please feel free to keep discussions going, either on the caravan or on horseback. They are truly fantastic and wouldn't want to push them away.

Sorin stares at Garand for a moment with an incredulous look on his face.

How is it possible to misunderstand so utterly? I have been speaking in Taldan, not Draconic, right? Well if it had been draconic, nobody else would have understood. Unless they knew draconic too. No that isn't right. Perhaps Garand's language skills are poor?

The look on Sorin's face changes to one of intense pity, and he starts speaking very slowly.

"I think you do not understand my words, Garand. I will give you an analogy. Say we are hungry and want to eat a fish. In your mind, the fish appears in your hands. In my mind, I look for the stream, cut a switch, dig grubs for bait out of the river bank, fashon a hook from a thorn and twig, bait the hook and tie it to the switch, then catch, gut and cook the fish. When you said that you wanted to go after the ogres because they are a threat, I do not dispute that. But you skip all the steps that your obligations entail. You wished to run off into the woods and chase the ogres. Who would have protected the caravan? Did you plan to leave our two drivers unguarded like fat lambs before hungry wolves? No, you simply skipped the steps in your mind that you did not like: getting the defensless to the safety of a town before we went off after the ogres."

As his mind begins to race, Sorin's words begin coming faster together.

"I will say it again: if someone was in immediate danger, I would have chased the ogres into their lair. I said as much when Shaleu was missing. But when no immediate danger is present, honor, duty and logic must hold firm over personal glory. We must take care of our family, this caravan, before rushing off into the wilderness. I have accepted my duty, perhaps it is time that you accept yours."

Garand remains silent, utterly without expression as Sorin talks, although he turns at one point to send bear-spirit, who has begun looking agitated, away.

There is a long moment of silence as he seems to gather his thoughts (or perhaps calm himself and soften his response?), before he replies, his thick Shoanti accent mangling the more musical Varisian words, and doing nothing to discount Sorin's thoughts on his linguistic fluency.

"This is ogre land. More than one giant meat-eating predator does not stalk the same territory. The only 'hungry wolves' in that area are the ogres, unless we missed the part where fresh meat rains down from the sky every night to feed a larger population of always hungry wasteful meat-eaters than any one territory could support. I did not 'skip details,' I simply did not see the necessity of explaining every detail of every thought in my head to have my words given weight. Nor did I think that Sandru, Koya and Ameiko, who already proved themselves our equals, perhaps even our betters, at pushing back the ogres that attacked them, and were likely staying with the drivers, were to be considered 'defenseless' or 'fat lambs.'"

"I care nothing for personal glory, and do not see how killing some ogres makes one glorious, nor do I expect that we will spend more than a few hours in the presence of the people who would benefit from the end to this local ogre menace, so do not believe that any 'glory' would last longer than a fleeting moment, in any case. My choice was made because I felt it was the moral one, as I have already stated. Why do you keep trying to find other reasons, that paint my choice as a villainous one?"

"Enough of your words. You use them to assign base and unworthy motivations to those you disagree with. First I am unwise and illogical, now vainglorious and dishonorable. Feh. If you wish to converse, and not provoke fights, to use your words to communicate, instead of as weapons, speak to me again, later."

Fight! Fight!
