This PbP started with Entombed with the Pharaohs and continues with The Pact Stone Pyramid. Many of the characters travelled to Osirion after completing a PbP based on River into Darkness.

Sykala resurfaces and taps on the stone wall to get everyone's attention. She motions for them to follow her as she backs up to where the sand is. With her finger she spells, "B-I-G S-N-A-K K-I-L M-E-N" She follows it up by drawing a serpentine form in the sand.

I assumed that Korian would know bestow curse was a touch spell, not a spell that could be attuned to someone and cast at a distance, but if he does not, than he was not bluffing. In any case, Esteban treated it as a teasing jest.

Ovirid will move back down the tunnel once anyone else's comments are shared, moving past the constricted slaves toward the other bodies, still moving carefully.

He'll actively check for a trap every 30' feet, relying on his instincts for passive checks in the intervals.

Some Perception checks for traps, use as necessary, please:

Perfect. In fact, personally, I think that's the way it should Always be done.

So, considering that we are actively looking for traps, here's a bunch of Perception rolls, which I guess can be spread out over however many feet you wish them to be?

As they move back inside, Korian speaks to the Druidess "Sykala, until I have the oppourtunity to study more on the elemental tongues, we're going to have to come up with some more effective means of communication for you while you're in such forms. So for now, let's try this. One tap for no, two taps for yes. A hard slam for Stop! or Danger! and move your hand in a circle for everything clear or OK. That sound good to you? If anyone has any further ideas, feel free to chip in."

Actually, since I average seeing or hearing it about once a week... no, it wasn't really necessary. ;-)


Before you reach the second group of bodies, you pass an area in which the walls widen from 10 ft. to 30 ft. The floor remains only 10 ft. wide, bridging this gap. The drop on either side is 30 or so feet deep. You can see bodies lying on the sand. Some are very new; some not much more than dust themselves.

Do you continue down to the bodies in the hall?

Perception 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15 including the dwarven bonus for stonework

If he can get Sykala's attention, he will try to signal to her that he wants her to look under the path and in the trenches.

"Yes of course, clearly this is a trap of some sort, it is likely simple in nature but if we do not quickly find the mechcanism perhaps we'd be best to just use a rope to cross? Sykala can cross and anchor the rope on the other side."

While the young mage speaks though he continues to look along with Ovirid for the trap workings.

I'm having trouble describing it. The hallway you are in has two open sections on either side at this point where the floor becomes a bridge for a short span. There are a bunch of skeletons and some more recent bodies lying at the bottom.

You find nothing in the way of traps, but the marks on the floor suggest the bodies where dragged from nearer to the entrance and then thrown down here. They weren't killed at this point. They were disposed of here.

Ixius half heartedly helps Korian and Ovirid look for traps.

"Lots of dead people down there. I wonder how these ones died?"


Sykala nods to the dwarf and sinks into the stone.

She'll first search below the floors and then around the walls, finally ending with the ceiling.

"Hmmm, actually looks like the bodies were just disposed here, now killed here. Sykala wai...ah, well, I think it should be safe to cross. But we'll use rope just in case. When Sykala next surfaces we'll have her hold a rope and anchor herself in the stone on the other side and then cross one at a time. In the meantime, Refina, can you tell what killed these people? Was it snakes again or something else? Also, [b]Ovirid, I've been thinking. As we are likely to have guests trying to sneak up and join us in the near future, perhaps we should start preparing, shall we say, welcome gifts for them?" pausing for a big nasty grin, the devious mage continues [b]"So, from now on, anytime you see an oppourtunity to stage a good trap, do so. The nastier the better."

Then suddenly, as his habitual paranoia creeps up on him, he silently orders Jinx to scurry to the entrance and back and sniff out the entire passageway to make sure that nothing hidden is accompanying them.

Refina has a look over some of the more recent bodies to try and find a cause of death

You find no traps around this area. The injuries on the more recent bodies look similar to those of the bodies closer to the entrance. The bodies are in the pit, so you can't find more about them or search them. They appear to be some of the slaves.

Well, Most of us can't search them. Also, any word from Jinx's snout?


So is Jinx going down the passage or back to the entrance? He finds nothing new at the entrance but the smell of rotting entrails is pretty overwhelming.

No, Jinx only went to the entrance and back. Paro Korian just wanted to make sure there were no invisibles hanging about. And yup, understood you loud and clear the first time around, I was just saying that there's at least one of us who can get down there no problem.


I figure you are all about the mid-section near these pits with bodies in them?

You hear a low rumbling grunting noise from further down the shaft.

Are there signs of impact on the 'bridge'? Such as something stone rubbing or impacting the floor?

"Mebbe th' trap 's jus' knockin' 's offa th' bridge int' th' pits..."

My mental image of this is off, I think. How long is the span where the hallway floor becomes a bridge? There are bodies lying in the sand below the bridge and also in the hallway ahead, which no longer has pits on either side? Is there anything on the ceiling to indicate an alternative route? I'm thinking trapdoors, but I'll accept roadmaps, too. ;-)

I'm torn between retreating to see what comes out after us in the daylight, lowering ourselves into the pit to let it pass by, or rushing forward to meet it head-on.

The dwarf looks at the mage, "'ell, lad, 't d'ye wanna do?"


So is this "bridge" solid all the way to the floor or is it a unsupported expanse of stone making the pits to either side actually one big pit that goes underneath the "bridge"?

Also, didn't understand your last post at all boss. We haven't started crossing the span yet though. Are still waiting for Sykala to finished exploring and 'reporting' her finds. Then when we do cross it will one at a time, using rope, with Sykala anchoring us from the other side. If it's not a 'bridge' though, and is solid to the bottom, this may not be necessary? Don't suppose you have a way to scan maps or anything?


It isn't clear from the map, but I think the pit spreads across the bottom and that this is a 'bridge' (not solid to the bottom). I was just checking location in terms of hearing the noise. Nobody is hanging back, right? Sykala does not find any traps.


Sykala shrugs and takes the rope across the bridge.

I am guessing that once she is midway across she starts hearing the noises

Once she hears the noise she will creep forward using her 60' foot darkvision to see if she can make out whatever it is.

Picky, picky! : P Just meant checking to see how these ones died and maybe if there were any explorers that anything interesting on them. But Korian doesn't really care, which is why he hasn't asked IC


She'll detect magic from a safe distance once we figure out what is making the noise.


If Sykala is creeping, she should make a stealth check.

hehehe.

Sykala creeps forward but not as stealthily as she intends. Perhaps there are stealthier animals she could study.

As she gets to the other bodies of slaves in the tunnel, she hears one whimper. One of them is alive. He's keeping his eyes closed tight and seems to be bracing himself for whatever strange beast this is lurking towards him.


Yep, yep, stealth is not one of her strong points. Figured she would try and be cautious and get lucky...but we can see how that went...dang little stompy heavy stone feet :)

Seeing nothing within sight, the surprisingly strong little stone elemental quickly grabs the slave who whimpered by the scruff of the neck and drags him swiftly back toward the others.

Her strength is currently 14.


The terrified slave resists, his whimpers growing louder. The source of the grunting and growling makes itself apparent. It is one that Sykala is familiar with. The whitish fur of the four-armed girallon makes it visible as it steps into the dim light of the entry shaft from whatever room lies beyond.

It begins to slowly make its way towards Sykala and the man she is attempting to pull to safety.

If Sykala wishes, she can treat the cowering slave as grappled and make another successful grapple check to move him half her speed. He is resisting but not fighting back so failure means she doesn't move him but maintains this grapple. Or, she can do something else entirely.

I can get an AC of 23 before you layer on buffs *hint, hint*. That's not bad, is it?

Is Sykala on the bridge? Or down in the bottom of the pits? If she's on our level, I assume we can see the girallon and Ovirid will ready himself for battle. What he does depends on distance to the critter, etc., so I will hold off on any specific actions.

It sounds like we are on the bridge and Sykala is down below with the bodies and the survivor. I assume the girallon is down there too.

Ixius draws his bow and looks for the girallon.

Can you give me some idea of distances here? How far to the girallon? How far back to the bridge?

AC23 before buffs is not bad at all. I'm pretty sure Sykala is further down the tunnel, past where the bridge ends. If we Can hear what's going on...

Korian speaks to Sykala through the message cantrip [i]"Sykala, is everything ok? Give us the signal. Is there danger? Do you need help?"[/b]

As he speaks, the mage pulls out his wand of scorching ray and commands the unseen servant to move even further down the tunnel, lighting up the way ahead.

PS Ovirid, did you catch Korian's suggestion that the old dwarf start creating traps when and wherever he sees fit?

I did, but if memory serves, trapmaking on the fly turned out to be a lot of wasted energy last time we had the conversation. Or maybe the old dwarf's just not remembering well. I do believe that I still have some bear traps in stock, though...

Okay, there were a few bodies near the entrance (all dead), a few bodies down in the pit (some very skeletal; some fresh), and a few bast the pit/bridge. Sykala is just past the pit/bridge. The Girallon is in the room beyond. You can see and hear what's going on as long as you have or don't need a light source.

As the invisible servant moves forward with the light, lighting up most of the room ahead, Korian moves within range and uses his wand to unleash a scorching ray of fire upon the giant ape.

Fire Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 6, 3) = 16 + Sneak if applicable: 1d6 ⇒ 4

The Girallon is right at the point where the hall expands into a room. It was in that room until now. The invisible servant is, I guess, lighting up the hall? Korian, how close do you get?

The light from the invisible servant shows the beast clearly. It looks like a girallon, but there's something unusual about it. The light reflects off of runes that cover its body, buried within the fur.

Yeah. That's what I said. It's covered in runes. I'm not making this s!&+ up. Let the whimpering begin.

Ovirid will double move across the bridge. Heeding Ixius' warning, he will keep his eyes averted. He readies shield and throwing axe as he moves. "'n 'ow d'ye expect t' 'it th' cursed thin' if'n ye canna look 't 't?"

Anybody:
This is one of those areas I don't understand well in the rules. I want to move forward, but I want to have my defenses active. I can't use most of the defense options unless I'm attacking, but I can't attack if I'm moving. Total defense precludes moving. I guess my only choice is my standard AC of 20. Am I missing something?


Ixius, I guess those are your attacks for next round?

I believe Korian has to be within 30' to use the wand. And yes, the servant can be in a corner somewhere, wherever it will best be able to light up the room.


Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Errrr, am I to suddenly assume that I don't get an action before all this happens now? Thought I was reacting to its appearance...


I was going to have a surprise round with just you and it, but suddenly everybody started shooting. ;-) This encounter doesn't really call for a surprise round as all of you were aware of the presence of something -- since it grunted -- and it was aware of you due to your poor stealth check. A surprise round now would not work in your favour anyhow. Still, let's keep things interesting ...

The rune-covered girallon bounds forward and swats at Sykala with two of its mighty arms, cutting a gash across her arm. With its other two arms it grabs the terrified slave and begins to pull. Sykala recognizes this animalistic behavior -- he was saving that meal for later.

7 points of damage, Sykala and you need to decide whether to hold on to the slave.

Round 1:

Girallon (12) -- attacks Sykala and grabs a snack
