Thank you, very much Rev Rosey for the opportunity.
Lynore, sorry to see you go - I have enjoyed your character and everyone's adventures. I hope that if you become less busy (provided that it's for the best for you) and that you maybe able to return.
As for a character, I was thining a male noble-man. Usually I try for humans or similar but with it being Sigil, I might do something slightly more different.
So the group has:
2 Defenders, Controller, Leader & a Striker.
So what do you think we need? Striker?

Valentino, James’s older brother had to care for the infant and the bond between them grew, Valentino feeling a strong sense of duty for his young sibling. The years passed and the young James and his older brother Valentino inevitably grew. Despite the negligent treatment James idolised his father and by the time he was 6 he followed him everywhere.
Most mornings you could find the young boy sat at the docks watching the ships sail into port. James’s inquisitiveness was aroused by all the elegant ships as they drifted through the dank water. James drifted away from his reverence of his father as the scenes from strange lands piqued his curiosity. Valentino was nearing puberty and left his brother to follow more interesting pursuits with his friends. James however was enthralled by the scent of spices and strange tongues with which these outsiders spoke. The pale drifting figures contrasting with the vivid eastern figures made James’s imagination run riot with thoughts of mysterious lands and adventure. He weaved through the crowds astounded by the exotic vistas, picking up words and phrases in alien languages and dialects. As the months passed James became adept in many of foreign dialects. Thus he became staple of the docks, helping the traders communicate if an unfamiliar merchant arrived. This role made him popular with the merchants but their sons were jealous of the pale youth that commanded their sires respect. Therefore James had to be sly enough to avoid the fists of these bullies as he wandered the docks alone. A solitary figure gliding through the throngs, earning coppers from wealthy merchants the youth grew.
The winter was starting to draw in and sleet was heavily falling, when a soaked James was running through the deserted docklands on an errand. Then he bumped into a young girl, barely older than him. Her slender frame tumbled to the floor and her golden velvety hair cascaded forming a halo. Taken aback by her visage James stopped dead, he extended his hand encasing her soft warm flesh and raised her to her feet. With eyes lowered he hesitantly mumbled his apologies, which she graciously brushed away with the faintest smile. Seeing that her apparel was saturated he offered to escort her home in the hopes of staying in her presence just for a couple of minutes more. Leading him to her ship she announced that she was the daughter of a wealthy Elven merchant and that they were in port for the winter as they waited out the season. She invited him aboard her ship the “Lacrimosa de Morte”, where they shared a small meal. Eleanor was her name, she and James spent the every day together playing aboard the ship or exploring the city. Observations she made opened James’s thoughts up to new ways of thinking and every day was better than the last.
Then the cold weather broke and she had to travel away, but to James’s relief she told him that this was one of the ports on their regular trade route and that she would see him soon. James wandered home in an enraptured daze, informing his brother that he had met the most amazing person ever. Her subsequent appearances were never for as long but the couple became inseparable. Eleanor taught James to read and write. The days between her visits passed in a melancholy haze as James continued translating, moving crates and carrying messages.
James was always a slender boy with a pale complexion, but this only enhanced a serene, ethereal countenance. When excited his face burst into an infectious smile that warmed the room around him. As it was nearing the winter solstice of his 11th year, James had been working at the docks moving cargo from a late schooner when he came down with a cold. His constitution was never particularly strong but the salty sea air usually helped. Instead it exacerbated his cold, the cargo had to be stored quickly and James needed the money so he worked on. By the time the job was finished he had a wracking cough. With his coppers he hurried home, no sooner had he got through the door than his legs gave way. James’s respiratory system was on the verge of shutting down as the cold had become bronchitis and he started to cough blood as Valentino carried him to his bed. James drifted in and out of consciousness as he battled for his life, Valentino watched over him and got what little medicine he could afford but to no avail. In James’s delirium he saw the pale figure of Eleanor stood over his bed a reassuring smile on her drawn face. “It is going to be alright, my love.” She softly whispered.
The dawn light hurt James’s eyes as they fluttered open, a sparrow chirped in the crisp, hoary spring morning. Through his bedroom window he could see the clear blue sky, while beside him sat Valentino lightly dozing.
“Where is Eleanor?” James exclaimed.
Valentino looked at him sympathy in his eyes, causing James’s heart to skip a beat in apprehension. Valentino explained that she had come into port the week after he had fallen ill and as immediately rushed to his bedside. Tearfully she stayed at his bedside through long nights, praying over his lifeless form. Despite Valentino’s medicine James was getting worse, so desperate to save his life she hired a doctor. The consequences of this action was dramatic, James’s life was saved though he may never again be in perfect health. But to pay the physician’s exorbitant price she had to take the money from her father’s strong box. When he found this out, he stormed to the Fairfax’s residence. He dragged Eleanor crying out of the house. He vowed that no-one from this heathen hovel would ever see her again. The next day the “Lacrimosa de Morte” sailed out of the harbour, before the cargo had even been unloaded and has not returned since. James’s health slowly recovered as the season turned. In the summer, Valentino seeing that his respected younger brother was better informed him that he was leaving the city for a time. James watched him leave knowing what a free spirit Valentino was.
James’s father started to do better on his business deals and one autumn morning declared that James and he would be leaving in a caravan that afternoon. So for the next few years James travelled on a caravan, helping out with transactions, keeping the accounts and moving what cargo his poor health would allow him.
Unexpectedly when James was 14 and visiting Milan, he saw a fleeting vision of a young woman running across a plaza. It had been over 3 years since he saw her but he was sure that it was Eleanor. She had grown up to be even more beautiful and before he realised James was running after the apparition. Through the entire city he dashed, his lungs on fire as the pale shade disappeared into a large town house. Knowing her fathers objections James waited in the shadows for her to re-emerge. The Saturday afternoon drew on and the jasmine scent permeated the mellow sunlight. As it turned dark James left, returning on the morrow as the sun crept above the hills. Sunday morning dawned; Eleanor emerged from the house escorted by a burly man. James’s heart sank and trying to be inconspicuous he followed them.
“Bloody Foreigners! But we have to appear respectful of their pagan ways if we are to do business with them. Having their services in a bloody archaic language that normal people cannot understand.” The burly man ranted.
Despite the building rage at man’s diatribe, James could not keep his eyes from Eleanor’s perfect form. Their eyes met and a look of amazement quickly turned to a smile that melted James’s heart and fire coursed through his veins.
Eleanor queried. “Oh brother, I was thinking of looking around the town tonight.”
“No, your brothers and I are going out to do some business tonight. Just wander around the rose garden out back if you need some air.” Her burly brother retorted.
Keeping eye contact Eleanor meaningfully nodded her head. James slipped into the crowd as they approached the cathedral. As James spent all afternoon in church he was beset by ambiguous feelings of apprehension, nervousness and anticipation. In the twilight James sauntered unsteadily up to the rear wall of Eleanor’s edifice. He hid amongst the rose bushes in the dying light after struggling over the wall. Eleanor entered the garden and James’s heart soared as he moved from his concealment and swept her up in his arms. She told him of how after she was taken away from him she was betrothed to another:
She surprised herself with her final line,
The promise is made, but my heart is thine.
Thus they left the garden and faded into the night,
In the forest found them from the frenzied flight.
They lay amongst the moss, bodies entwined,
Their hearts bound together, for all time.
Throughout the night they unleashed their passionate love in the glade by the brook. The dawn light found them, Eleanor a pale shade in a diaphanous gown, tousled hair and angelic visage. The lover’s made a vow that they would never be parted, their love would be eternal. Into the reedy light burst three masculine forms, Eleanor’s brothers had found them.
“The maid told of your traitorous love with this despicable bastard, and followed you here. You are no sister of mine.”
The imposing figure stalked towards them drawing his blade. The couple withdrew from the intimidating ranting individual, holding each other in terror at the impending violence.
He swiftly struck, lunging at the pair. James spun to put his body in front of his beloved, but the blade impaled the pair. As pain burst throughout his body, the sabres steel pinned the young lover’s bodies together in death. James embraced her as they tumbled into the brook. Having done their grisly deed the siblings left the grove and their dying victims. James held on to his darling as he held onto life, determined to protect her eternally. Their lips softly caressed in a pale white kiss, mouths filling with a viscous ferric fluid. The water became rose as the blood leaked from the piercing wound in James’s lung. They drifted down the stream as their souls flowed away. Eleanor rose up from the water and cradled his head in her lap:
“It’s alright my love, no more pain.”
As his consciousness slipped away James still heard her reassuring murmurs.
He awoke to find himself in a monastic cell, a robed figure entered.
“You are safe hear, my son, we found you by the brook you were touched by death’s hand but we brought you back. Sleep now.”
Fitfully James slept until the sun fell; in the twilight another figure entered the cell. This person was dressed in a pale hooded robe. And as the cowl was removed it was revealed to be Eleanor. James sat up and reached out to her, but she shied away from his touch.
“It will be alright now, remember our covenant we will never be parted again. Rest you need your sleep, regain your strength.”
With that she left the room and James fell into a troubled slumber. In the morning when the monk returned James demanded to see Eleanor but the response shocked him. Her lifeless corpse was found next to his and has been buried in the crypt already.
All day a traumatised James was trapped in thought, What was happening?' Until night broke, and then Eleanor’s soul returned to him.
“James, dear heart, even though my physical form has departed my essence is part of you. On the eve I will visit you, our promise will be upheld.”
James’s troubles were eased every night by his tête-à-tête with his love, but by day he was disturbed by the knowledge that he could see spirits. So to enable him to control his ‘gift’ he joined the priesthood. There he learned rites and rituals of warding, exorcism and detection of evil. Through his days he became a scholar of theocracy, linguistics and spirituality. Then one day he received a letter from his brother, he had joined a mercenary company and was touring the Lands. James felt a sense of duty for the aid his brother had given. Thus he decided to join him, to be his brother’s keeper. James graduated from the ecclesiarch and left his sanctuary to find his sibling. So together they wandered the battlefields of the Worlds, Valentino defeating adversaries by day wenching by night. During the days James eased the departing spirits of allies and enemies alike, by night he met his beloved in moonlit groves.
After a misjudged campaign, where most of the company was destroyed, the pair now found themselves down on their luck approaching the town of Sigil.
Now I can just pare this down or develop something else; as this is an adapted background from a previous RL PC.

Just comparing the classes and races, to ensure they work together.
A genasi looked interesting for the Resistances and the powers, but their look is not quite what I envision. Thus I'll probably go for human or half-elf.
Looking at the generic Dark Pact Warlock power doesn't enthuse me. Hopefully the glut of Necrotic powers, would not be too much of a deterrent in the scenario and some of them are more effective against undead.
I'll have to get the Arcane power books, but I've already come up with the 2 lists of powers; for my 2 option classes.
RE:Backstory, I'll alter the final bit slightly with James' brother Valentino having gone off around the city 'to have some fun', maybe he'll meet up with Thom ;P
DSXMachina |
Just working through the stats/sheet at the moment, James will have a decent CON (the power of his pact/wild magic runs though his veins). But without this he would have Elric like constitution. He's probably going to be a half-elf, though human is still appealing.
Whilst checking through people sheets I noticed:
Distance Javelin +1, bra +19, 1d6+8 damage
It took me a second to realise that it was an acronym for basic ranged attack, I just thought she had really good support.
He's definitely going to be either a Dark Pact Warlock or a Wild Mage! So a ranged Striker.
Lanthair |
I'll repeat the "play what you want advice". At the same time, practically, another ranged damage dealer would be very nice, and if they know Thievery that would be helpful.
FYI, Lanthair has +16 Thievery. He just never used it because Lynore's was better.

The material isn't particularly strong, and it doesn't cover a large area, but that plus! Plate armour just isn't needed.

I retract my statement. Lanthair can risk the poisons, explosions, and other traps.

DSXMachina |
Unfortunately, the Sorceror is 10+8(level)+3(dex)+0(cloth) +4 (?enhancement?) = 25
At least the Warlock is 10 +8 (level) +3 (dex) + 2 ((snakeskin=+2reflex) leather) + 4 (?enhancement?) = 27
EDIT: Oh, but if the warlock moves he can get concealment for -2.
Yeah they are both very low, but hopefully my other defenses should be alright.
Sir James Durham-Fairfax |
Actually the lack of AC & therefore likelihood to be hit, can also represent his frailty of birth.
So, I was thinking that;
Valentino knows that in Sigil there will always be need for a fighting man and that he will be able to find another company once his coin runs out. "Live for the moment." he said slapping his brother James on the back before leaving.
James waited on the eve for Eleanor to return, her shade appeared... though fainter. 'Is this the Lady of Pain's influence or something else?' James thinks desperately.
Maybe that is why he is wandering around Sigil? Researching?
Guardian Iatos |
I will say of the two, to keep in mind whichever character you want, that you'll be playing him in a naturally slow medium. While you might like a concept, it may not move fast enough for you to shake out the system and see exactly what you want from it.
That said, I do like both concepts.
Sir James Durham-Fairfax |
As for readiness, probably tonight or tomorrow I can get him finished. I don't have a DDi account, so it'll all be in the profile only.
What Magic Items? Backgrounds? Are we using Themes, if so where can I find them?
I'll go with the Warlock, the Wild Magic Sorceror would be super-cool/random, but might be better slowly levelling him.
Sir James Durham-Fairfax |
Alright, there are a couple of powers that I probably won't take but... they could be useful. Ruinous Resistance - Ally takes vulnerability/5 & I get resistance/15 to a damage type
All must sacrifice - Allies within 3 take d8 damage, enemy takes 1d10 per ally damaged.
As I said probably won't take one of these, but thoughts?
Rev Rosey |
There could certainly be circumstances where either would be very useful.
It's not for me to say as I'm not a player in this, but to my mind at least it is the equivalent to most wizards having to do collateral damage from time to time.
That said, if the first time you rock into combat, James the newcomer starts demanding blood, that could be tricky.
Arishat |
How close do you want to be to the melee? Because if you're hanging back with Thom doingpredominantly ranged damage, while the melee group - Barel, Raya, me, Lanthair - are off doing our thing, you're not going to get much use from the second ability. We can certainly heal through it, if you've a mind to try it. The first looks perfectly reasonable to me.
Sir James Durham-Fairfax |
I think he'll be moving around the battlefield quite a bit, to gain concealment.
The latter would enable extra some focussed fire could be useful especially if we want to put someone down. But the alternate gives my only radiant & burst power.
The resistance one I am more hesitant about, as granting an ally a vulnerability is really bad and 15 resistance could not be worth it. Also I could instead see through a creatures eyes, very interesting power.
Sir James Durham-Fairfax |
"A pleasure, my dear lady, your nobility and pedigree is eminantly apparent."
Only got to work out any Alchemical Rituals known, and what to do with last feat. Multi-class to Bard/Cleric/Warlord or go for Dual Implement wielder and get a +2 extra damage?
Yay, got Arcane Power this morning.
Rev Rosey |
Ready to rumble, James?
Just stroll onto the game thread when you're ready.
