Morgrom advances and jumps into the pit with his greatsword drawn, drifting down to the nearer hatchling, just as Thorthal stomps on it and badly damages it.

Andretta moves over to the window, where Slick was, and says, "Maybe these controls do something!"

BR-N3R intones, "Observation room malfunctioning."

The tauslek hatchlings fight back, and one clamps its mandibles on to Bardos!

The door leading to the control room does not open when the button is touched - as Thorthal has all of the keys, it would recall a full-round action by someone to try to pick the lock.

Petronicus bolt deflects off something unseen at the level of the floor he is standing on, like there is an invisible barrier across the pit.
Good thing nobody threw another alchemist's fire.

Haer Kul cannot get the door to open in an instant, but he does eventually get through.

The panel is marked with unfamiliar symbols, but there are only a few controls. Haer Kul finds that he is able to use them to create the illusion of the floor or make it transparent, and also to summon and dismiss the solid covering of the pit. The feather fall effect is active when the pit is open. He believes the controls may have malfunctioned, but they seem to be working right now.

In magical terms, the controls are for illusory wall, wall of force, and feather fall effects, but there are no associated magical auras.

Andretta calls down to Slick, Bardos, Thorthal, and Morgrom that they can climb out of the pit if somebody has a rope.

The lower area is only lit by the light of the observation area. The group below can see two doors on the upper tier. The western one is open, with darkness beyond. There is a foul odour coming from somewhere.

"I have a rope but no easy way to get it to you"

Slick attempts to climb to the upper tier. Taking 10 gives him 18 on a climb check.

If that is not enough , he gets Climb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

If that works, he will creep to the open door, hide beside it, and roll his ever burning torch through the open door, waiting for a reaction.

stealth: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
The torch is usually concealed in his clothing to keep it hidden

Slick has no trouble getting to the upper tier.
The open door is the source of the stench. Nothing reacts as he rolls the light into the room, and all he sees within are a pile of mouldering corpses in one corner.

Slick will enter the room to retrieve his torch and perform a quick search.

Searching the dead: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Then return to the top tier room.

"Hasn't anyone up there dropped a rope down yet?"

If no one has, he'll try tossing one end of his rope up for someone in the top room to catch.

Haer Kul will make his way to the edge of the pit, and try to catch the rope.

If Haer Kul can find something solid (and immovable to tie the rope onto (Perception: 10 + 10 = 20), he will do that. Otherwise he will call the others over:

"Mr. Petronicus, Ms. Andretta, we will need all of us to hold onto the rope."
He calls down: "I suggest the lightest one of you climb up first! We are not very strong up here."

Petronicus will roll up his sleeves and grab onto the rope.

Thorthal will make an effort to climb out of the pit before a rope is dropped down, and wait for a rope if he is unsuccessful.

Thorthal is able to climb to the upper tier with the two doorways, but has to wait for a rope to go any further.

With a great deal of trial and error, the party is eventually able to get a rope up to the observation deck, where Haer Kul, Petronicus, and Andretta hold onto it.

Well actually we should really check those rooms on the tier with doorways. I misunderstood what floor they were located on. If we can safely do so I suggest we all climb (or jump with feather fall) to that level and explore the open door.

"Perhaps I can be of assistance?" Haer Kul will take 10 to try to open it. If that doesn't work, he will keep trying.

Haer Kul manages to get the door to open after a few tries, revealing a narrow, descending stairway. It leads to the eastern door of the arena below.

The party gathers together again, and explores the lower area. Using detect magic, Petronicus discovers a heavily soiled cloak of resistance (the weakest type) on one of the rotting bodies.
