Harold slides his sword back into it's place as Bjorn busts out the ghost zapper to take care of the floating scythe. He nods his thanks to the Ulfen and his fellow half-orc warrior, "Thee're migh'y 'andy wiv what axe. Thuff it'd probably do be'er against somethin' what bleeds all nawmal like instead ov a spook." When Korthul and Bjorn talk of the dwarven body lying off nearby, Harold volunteers, "I'll get 'em. Just don't expect a dignified procession." The half-orc bends over to collect the decapitated body, first checking for anything of value about it before lifing the head in one hand by the hair or beard if lacking hair on top, and one hand around the belt or pant's waistline.

Bjorn was referring to Asha (the gunslinger). He was asking if you came with her.

"We came from Ravengro to bring this man back", he says nodding to the unconscious Gibs slung over his shoulder. "We're all friends of a man that lived there. A professor..."

"You say there are other bodies up there? It's bloody work but let's bring as many back as we can. The sheriff will want to know exactly how many this coward butchered."

"One other body at least. I didn't see any more. And I believe I know of the man you speak. Lorrimor, his name was. Did he come with you to the ruins? I've been looking for him for some time now."

Korthul nods at Harold's compliment, but his eyes flit away from the larger half-orc's gaze.

"Not exactly", Bjorn explains. "He's dead. We think people this man was working for killed him. With magic", Bjorn hisses the last part and spits.

"How did he capture you? And how did you know the professor?"

I'm here and watching, just let me know when you want to return to town.

Character Sheet

We can probably return now. I'm sure we can finish introductions along the way.

You turn Gibs over to the sheriff who quickly throws him in a cell. He doesn't recognize the dwarf, but promises to ask around to see if anyone in Ravengro knows him.

Is there anything specific you want to mention to the sheriff, or ask him about. Assume you gave him the basic facts about how you captured Gibs, what he said, what he was doing, etc.

Also, Kendra wants to remain in Ravengro. She is feeling ill, subtly hinting that, despite her "tough" outward demeanor, seeing a recently beheaded dwarf is not really something she was ready to experience. She is willing to take whatever precautions you ask of her, but she does not want to return to Harrowstone.

"Dead?!," Korthul exclaims. "I was seeking him out. He owed me one from some time back, and I was in need of payment on that debt."

"As for how I was held by this madman, I was attacked here by what I assume to be cultists and left for dead. This 'Gibs' must have found me then."

Korthul is pensive for a moment. "I was told Lorrimor was still alive by a half-elf and human in town. Have you maybe heard of them?" Korthul continues to describe the human and half-elf in question.

I'm not sure what the human and half-elf look like; Haldhin?

Character Sheet

Seeing that the sheriff takes him seriously, Bjorn will mention the disembodied arms and their attached scythe.

"Finally the girl gets some sense!" the big Ulfen roars when Kendra asks to stay behind.

He gets a smug expression on his rugged features but they quickly soften when he sees the doubt and fear in Kendra's.

"Then again, there's no telling if there are more madmen like Gibs running around Ravengro. He slew two well trained guards without being seen. What if the next one is just as cunning?"

Perhaps this would be a good place to get rid of inactive party members (Oliar?). They could stay behind to keep an eye on Kendra.

The massive Northman continues.

"Anyway, you're a brave girl and you can handle yourself in a scrap. You're your father's daughter alright. Are you certain you don't have some Ulfen in you?"

Korvus doesn't have much to add to the discussion with the Sheriff, except to inform him that Gibs was most definitely under the effect of necromantic magic - likely tied to possession by a malevolent spirit. Korvus suggests that Gibs be securely bound with chains and manacles in case the spirit tries to possess him again.

Korvus offers to have Angelia the guardian spirit transferred to Kendra if she wishes, and will ask Father Grimburrow to conduct the ritual if needed. If given the chance Korvus also checks in with the Pharasman temple to check on Gunther's status.

Before we return to the ruins Korvus would like to take the opportunity to speak with Alendru Ghoroven and check the Town Hall's records regarding Harrowstone Prison. He would also like to take a rest and prepare more spells before returning to Harrowstone.

Also, we have 2 remaining Cloaks of Resistance +1 from the false crypt - one for Asha and one for Korthul.

If the group is going to return to town to rest, then Korvus has plenty of time to get everything done.

Kendra accepts Angelia's protection, and Father Grimburrow agrees to perform the transfer. Gunther's status is unchanged. Oliar indicates he would prefer to remain in Ravengro to keep an eye out for more strange events, like another attempt to desecrate the warden's statue, or more marauding pigs.

Alendru knew Professor Lorrimor and supports your efforts to find out what really happened. As such, he offers to identify any magical items you find free of charge. Additionally, he has a small selection of scrolls for purchase if you are interested.

The Town Hall records fill in a few minor details but do not provide any new revelations about Harrowstone prison. The Town Hall is a viable research location, but the group has already discovered everything they can about Harrowstone elsewhere in Ravengro.

Anything else? Assume you stay at Kendra's house again, food and drink provided.

Aww, you never replied to Bjorn's last comment.

Once again, Bjorn is up early for his morning workout. He pushes himself harder than usual, hoping it will somehow prepare him for whatever other horrors lay in wait within the ruins of Harrowstone. Once he's done, the big Ulfen returns to the estate for his breakfast with steam still rising from the sweat fresh on his frame.

Did you guys want to try to get information out of Gibs first or just return to Harrowstone?

Sorry, meant to respond!

Kendra smiles sweetly, fluttering her eyes. "Who, little 'ole me?"

Her smile suddenly turns into a devilish grin as she winds up and punches Bjorn on his arm. "Mabye, dad always said mom had a wild side to her... and I know they met somewhere up north. Who knows... we could be cousins."

Bah! Derailed.

"Perhaps. You can tell me what you know about your mother when we get back."

Heh, she knows. Bjorn didn't think it was going to be that easy, did he? :)

Character Sheet

Apparently not. =P

Bjorn afforded himself the smallest hint of a grin before finishing up breakfast and rushing upstairs to put some clothes on and don his gear. He splashed cold water on himself both to wash away some of the sweat from his morning exertions and shock the thoughts of Kendra, who he found himself increasingly enamored with, from his mind.

That girl is trouble. Best finish up this business with the Professor's killers and then get out of town.

Harold will stick close to the jail/Sheriff's office for the day while the others go about their business in town. He doesn't want Gibs to make a repeat performance and go on the rampage again. Once everyone is ready, Harold is more than ready to get finished with Harrowstone and raze the rest of the cursed place to the ground.

Gibs remains unconscious throughout the night and into the next morning.

The sheriff is willing to allow you to question Gibs, but you will have to wake him up (heal him).

Otherwise, the sheriff agrees to keep him under strict guard, bound by heavy chains and a strait jacket until the group thinks it's safe to release him.

Character Sheet

Bjorn and Harold didn't rough him up that bad did they? Bjorn's non-lethal should have healed by morning (1 hp per hour at least).

Once he's dressed Bjorn leaves to meet Harold at the Sheriff's office.

Not really, and yes, he should be awake and his wounds appear to be superficial by the morning, but he's still unconscious.

Character Sheet

After arriving at the office and greeting Harold, Bjorn studies Gibs.

"What in the hells is wrong with him?" he asks aloud.

The big Ulfen slaps Gibs roughly a couple times in an attempt to wake him up.

"I didn't even crush him that badly. At worst he should have a few broken ribs."

Is his condition similar at all to what happened to our dwarf?

Good question. For our purposes, yes, Gibs' present state is identical to Gunther's situation.

Hmmm... I was hoping to maybe find out which of the prisoners would've been so bad as to have been incarcerated in an oubliette - per the visions in Gibs' dreams - in order to possibly get an idea as to the identity of the spirit that was possessing him, and to see if that person had some association with the letter 'V'. The Temple files didn't seem to have any of that information.

Also, on an unrelated note - was there any reward for capturing Gibs?

Character Sheet

"More damned magic", Bjorn mutters when he makes the connection with Gibs' condition.

Hoping it will work again, the big Ulfen pulls the glass 'siphon', undoes the stopper, and points it at Gibs' immobile form.

I believe it's recharged by now.

Bjorn pulls the siphon out, opens the vial, and aims it at Gibs, but nothing happens. The gas remains inside the vial.

@Bjorn, good idea, just doesn't work on this effect. That does not count as a use for today.

@Korvus, nothing you have seen would reveal that information. That said, you can infer from what you have found that each one of the Five Prisoners would have received "special" treatment due to their crimes, with an oubliette being reserved for the most depraved and dangerous.

There is not a reward, primarily because the Town Council hasn't had a chance to discuss it yet. The sheriff promises you something, and offers to speak on your behalf in front of the Council.

Character Sheet

"Damn", Bjorn says as he redoes the stopper.

"Let's find the others and get back to Harrowstone. He's got whatever's cursed the dwarf. There's nothing we can do for him."

Bjorn is ready to return to the prison.

Five Prisoners? What Five Prisoners? My understanding is there were more than five prisoners at Harrowstone. Did I miss something somewhere?

Male Human (Chelaxian) Oracle of Life 4

Sorry I've been MIA for a couple days, have been sorta distracted with schoolwork.

"Hmm," the Chelaxian mumbles quietly from his spot behind the Northman. Curious at Gibs' state, Alexei pulls his wand from his belt as he steps forward to Bjorn's side. Incanting softly, before pointing it at the unconscious man, the wand glows with a warm light as a part of its power seeps into Gibs.

Well, I'm embarrassed. I had it in my notes that you guys had discovered some information, but I looked back through the thread and I can't find a post where I actually give it to you. /facepalm Sincerest apologies.

Slight retcon then...

When Korvus goes to look through the files at the Town Hall, he finds the following information:

After a few hours of research, you find the following information:

A general history about Harrowstone prison containing these details:

Harrowstone Prison:

  • Harrowstone is a ruined prison — partially destroyed by a fire in 4661, the building has stood vacant ever since. The locals suspect that it’s haunted, and don’t enjoy speaking of the place.

  • Harrowstone was built in 4594. Ravengro was founded at the same time as a place where guards and their families could live and that would produce food and other supplies used by the prison. The fire that killed all of the prisoners and most of the guards destroyed a large portion of the prison’s underground eastern wing, but left most of the stone structure above relatively intact. The prison’s warden perished in the fire, along with his wife, although no one knows why she was in the prison when the fire occurred. A statue commemorating the warden and the guards who lost their lives was built in the months after the tragedy — that statue still stands on the riverbank just outside of town.

  • Most of the hardened criminals sent to Harrowstone spent only a few months imprisoned, for it was here that most of Ustalav’s executions during that era were carried out. The fire that caused the tragedy was, in fact, a blessing in disguise, for the prisoners had rioted and gained control of the prison’s dungeons immediately prior to the conflagration. It was only through the self-sacrifice of Warden Hawkran and 23 of his guards that the prisoners were prevented from escaping—the guards gave their lives to save the town of Ravengro.

  • At the time Harrowstone burned, five particularly notorious criminals had recently arrived at the prison. While the commonly held belief is that the tragic fire began accidentally after the riot began, in fact the prisoners had already seized control of the dungeon and had been in command of the lower level for several hours before the fire. Warden Hawkran triggered a deadfall to seal the rioting prisoners in the lower level, but in so doing trapped himself and nearly two dozen guards. The prisoners were in the process of escaping when the panicked guards accidentally started the fire in a desperate attempt to end the riot.

Further searching among the files dated the closest to the fire that destroyed the prison contain these details:

Five Notorious Prisoners:

  • Father Charlatan (Sefick Corvin): Of the five notorious prisoners, only Father Charlatan was not technically a murderer, yet his crimes were so blasphemous that several churches demanded he be punished to the full extent of Ustalavic law. Although he claimed to be an ordained priest of any number of faiths, Father Corvin was in fact a traveling con artist who used faith as a mask and a means to bilk the faithful out of money in payment for false miracles or cures. He became known as Father Charlatan after his scheme was exposed and his Sczarni accomplices murdered a half-dozen city guards in an attempt to make good the group’s escape.

  • The Lopper (Vance Saetressle): When the Lopper stalked prey, he would hide in the most unlikely of places, sometimes for days upon end with only a few supplies to keep him going while he waited for the exact right moment to strike. Once his target was alone, the Lopper would emerge to savagely behead his victim with a handaxe.

  • The Mosswater Marauder (Ispin Onyxcudgel): Only 5 years before his hometown of Mosswater was destined to be overrun and ruined by monsters from the nearby river, Ispin Onyxcudgel was a well-liked artisan and a doting husband. When he discovered his wife’s infidelity, he f lew into a jealous rage and struck her dead with his hammer, shattering her skull and his sanity with one murderous blow. Wracked with shame and guilt, Ispin became convinced that if he could rebuild his wife’s skull she would come back to life—but unfortunately, he could not find the last blade-shaped fragment from the murder site. So instead, Ispin became the Mosswater Marauder. Over the course of several weeks, the cunning dwarf stalked and murdered nearly 20 people while searching for just the right skull fragment. He was captured just before murdering the daughter of a visiting nobleman from Varno, and was carted off to Harrowstone that same night.

  • The Piper of Illmarsh (real name unknown): Before he snatched his victims, the Piper taunted his targets with a mournful dirge on his flute. He preferred to paralyze lone victims by dosing their meals with lich dust and then allowed his pet stirges to drink the victims dry of blood.

  • The Splatter Man (Hean Feramin): Professor Feramin was a celebrated scholar of Anthroponomastics (the study of personal names and their origins) at the Quartrefaux Archives in Caliphas. Yet an accidental association with a succubus twisted and warped his study, turning it into an obsession. Feramin became obsessed with the power of a name and how he could use it to terrify and control. Soon enough, his reputation was ruined, he’d lost his tenure, and he’d developed an uncontrollable obsession with an imaginary link between a person’s name and what happens to that name when the person dies. Every few days, he would secretly arrange for his victim to find a letter from her name written in blood, perhaps smeared on a wall or spelled out with carefully arranged entrails. Once he had spelled his victim’s name, he would at last come for her, killing her in a gory mess using a complex trap or series of rigged events meant to look like an accident.

Alexei uses his wand on Gibs, and while the man's wounds heal as expected, he still remains unconscious.

After examining the man closely, he states, "Hopefully we'll be able to figure this out later, but for now, I can't really tell what's wrong." The bearded oracle sighs, then turns to Bjorn. "No matter. We should head back to Harrowstone. I can only imagine that it be best for us to get to the bottom of this whole mess as soon as possible."

Thanks, DM Haldhin! Although I think I was happier before learning about the Five Prisoners. Ignorance was bliss!

So from the descriptions of the crimes, I'm thinking Gibs might've been possessed by The Splatter Man (the bloody 'V' on the Warden's statue). Or The Lopper (the beheaded dwarf). Or possibly both?!? And Farmer Tyon's outburst - "I'll kill her again, and you can't stop me!" - sounds suspiciously like The Mosswater Marauder. Oh, dear...

Now I wish I'd learned Protection from Evil as one of my two new spells at 2nd level.

That's some dark stuff...

Bjorn nods in agreement.

Before we head back to Harrowstone, would Korvus have time to copy the Protection from Evil spell into his spellbook from the scroll we found in the false crypt?

Character Sheet

Korvus could have done that in the morning while Bjorn and Alexei were off checking on Gibs and picking up Harold.

Female

Asha was stunned by what happened at Harrowstone, mainly by how a little bottle had removed the scythe from the fight. She'd have to get her hands on some of those before getting hom. They might not work in the Mana Wastes when in nullmagic zones, but maybe they'd help against spontaneously rising undead elsewhere.

Once they returned to town Asha followed Kendra to her home. To further apologize for her entrance, but more so to pay her respects to the Professor and talk with Kendra about Asha's own connection to the professor and trying to figure out how all that just happened fitted in. She stayed with Kendra while the others went to interrogate Gibs.

Eventually she made her way to the sheriff's office but decided to wait outside.

"As for what I'm doing now," he shrugs. "These cultists beat me, left me for dead, and crossed my personal wishes to keep Lorrimor among the living."

Korthul emits a small chuckle. "I'm not much of an orc, but I'll admit that the prospect of timely revenge gets my blood boiling. Those cultists will pay Lorrimor's life debt with their own."

Does Korvus mention his findings on the prison to the group? I've got more info if Korthul becomes aware of his research.

The Northman grows a little solemn as he reflects on his own past with the Professor.

"He was a good man. He had a talent for seeing to the heart of things, not matter how bad they got. The world's a darker place without him."

Male Human (Chelaxian) Oracle of Life 4

Alexei puts a hand on the fighter's shoulder, trying to calm him. "He was. So we should start heading back to Harrowstone, so we might finish what he started." The Chelaxian nods once, sagely, and says "Just try to get along with Lady Asha until we finish this task."

Female

Asha grins at the Ulfen's comment and nods at Alexei, "Thank you lord Alexei. I agree, we should get going for Harrowstone as soon as we can. I doubt the cultists will wait for us with executing their plans."

Korvus, don't worry about scribing it, just assume you learned it as an additional spell at 2nd. Easiest solution, and my mistakes shouldn't have a negative effect on you guys. :)

Harrowstone prison is much the same as you left it, and a cursory examination of the rest of the courtyard doesn't turn up much more. The pool to the east drops to a depth of about ten feet, and you can tell that much of the pool lies where parts of the prison used to stand.

There are a couple of different ways you can enter the prison. There is the front entry hall (S2), the door on the balcony where you fought Gibs (S6), and another door on a balcony on the east side of the prison (S7).

If you choose the entry hall, you have a door leading west, double doors heading north, and two doors leading east.

-----

Let me know if you want to do anything specific before entering the prison (i.e. casting spells, etc).

Otherwise, let me know what direction you want to go to begin your exploration of Harrowstone!

Well since you've already described it, let's start with the entry hall.

Welcome back, DM Haldhin!

Before the party returns to the prison, Korvus offers Asha and Korthul the two remaining magical cloaks retrieved from the false crypt in the Restlands. (Asha and Korthul each receive a Cloak of Resistance +1).

Korvus retrieves a wand from his pack as the party enters the ruined prison's walls. The half-orc wizard calls upon the wand's magic to conjure an invisible protective aura about himself and the blackbird perched on his shoulder and replaces the wand in his pack. (Use wand of Mage Armor on self (AC 15) and Maximus (AC 21); charges used 2/50.)

As the group approaches the large prison building, Korvus looks for the dark red markings on the ground that Harold pointed out the previous day.

"If your hunch is correct, he could very well have been controlled by the Splatter Man."

---

In response to Asha:

Korthul nods in response to Asha's curtsy. "The professor and I were not exactly friends, but I am pleased that we are well met, milady."
