Continuing the dialogue with Jacinth...

A slight smile touches Rata's lips as Jacinth uncharacteristically stammers over her words. As she looks away he is emboldened by her reaction and raises a tentative hand, placing it gently upon her slender shoulder, "I'm glad you agree. I think our group would gladly accept you if you choose to remain with us once our contract has been fulfilled." He pauses for a moment, an inner monologue seeming to take place. Coming to some unseen conclusion, he continues, "Your... Harships at Dolentla. I would speak with you about them sometime. I feel- I feel like we would both benefit greatly from sharing in each other's burdens. Maybe sometime tonight? After we return to the Rita?" The smile on his lips remains as his brown eyes sparkle in the sunlight - a spot of foam in a cup of dark espresso...

Presently...

As Jacinth excuses herself, Rata quickly speaks up, Ah, of course, I'll come with-" but she is already knifing through the celebratory Tulita before he can finish his offer. He wastes no time in trotting after her, although his wider girth makes it a touch more difficult for him to maneuver through the merriment.

He catches the tail end of her comment, "Nef, what is wrong. Has something happened?" before quickly turning his gaze to the embracing couple. He notices Nef wiping her face with her sleeve and looks to the resoulte man. "Nef, are you alright?" he says over Jacinth's shoulder, concern clearly evident in his tone.

His eyes widen at the news and he can't help hide his surprise. "Zem, friend, are you sure about this? There is honor in helping your people, for sure, but there is just as much honor in helping your friends."

At Rata's question, Nef gives him a single, stricken look.

Rata:

"I don't know if I'll ever be alright again."

And then, in that same small and calm voice, she asks, "Rata, can you do me a favor? Can you collect two slivers of wood, one from the Rita, one from the Bastion? Carve them from the ship's rails if you need to do so. Please mark them, and under no circumstances mix them up."

Still hanging on to Zem's hand, she swallows. "Please?"

She looks to him, as always, for guidance. "Is this just temporary? Will we meet again in Port Shaw?"

"I do not know" - is the straight answer - "My heart wishes so, but I cannot be sure - I do not know what paths we will thread from here onwards"- he adds, his hand still in hers.

At his smile, the smile she had longed to see for so long, she feels her heart open like a flower, only to fold again as the impact of his words hit.

"Stand tall and unbroken, Malama. Tread the paths that you must, so that you can give and receive love," she says softly. "Even if... even it's not with me." This is what she can give him, right now. Her blessing. Heart breaking, she squeezes his hand once again. "Find joy. Find purpose. Guide others, as you once guided me."

And then her eyes widen as she looks at him. "Malama, who will you appoint to be my guide in your stead? I am still just a guest, still on probation with the Moamasu." She glances over at Ke'ahilani, who is treating some of the bruised and battered Tulita on the deck, rudely shoving others out of his way. "Will it be Lani, or one of the new crew that I do not know?"

PAST -- CONVERSATION WITH LANI

Nef rubs at her hand, a little angry with Ke'ahilani. "I know that you rebuilt yourself. I'm even proud that you did that!"

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22

She glares at him. "You know what? You feel sorry for yourself. I get that. You don't see that you are your own amazing creation. Well, I do. And I refuse to let you keep mourning after some idiotic ideal of who you think you were meant to be!"

She comes around his other side, weaving through the celebrants, until she is face to face once again.

"But... Lani, you don't get to keep treating me like this. Shoving me out of the way, anytime you feel like it. Viciously poking at me. Roughly throwing my hand away. Maybe my touch was unwelcome. If so, I apologize. Qadirans touch people all the time, but I realize that some people don't like it. If that's the case with you, just tell me."

She moves to leave him, and then sighs and turns back. "I'm sorry for being blunt this time, but maybe this will finally sink past that wall of self-pity that you hide behind. I'm your friend and your crewmate, and I deserve better."

Talking w/Rata

At the touch of Rata's hand on her shoulder, Jacinth's first instinct is to pull away but she manages to catch herself.

No, I will not. To allow this is to encourage this...interest he seems to have in me...but pulling away shows fear. And I do not fear him...and will not fear him, either.

"Do you think so?" she wonders, glancing over to where the rest of the group seemed to be congregated. "Nef has...put her trust in me, it seems and I am aware that carries a fair amount of weight among your group. But we did not begin on the best of terms and my own relationship with the Tulita peoples is...tenuous, even now. I am not sure how accepting the others would be of me," she admits, a trace of something that sounds like regret in her voice. Suddenly aware that she was on the verge of sharing more than she had planned to with this little talk, she shakes her head. "As I said, we shall have to see. Much can happen between now and our return to Port Shaw. Regarding your other question, I..." she hesitates, her mind briefly returning to days earlier on the docks of Port Shaw and a man suddenly stricken by grief and pain without warning. And she found that she could not refuse his request. "Very well. We shall speak at a later time when there is quiet to be had."

I am not afraid.

No...but perhaps you should be.

Present

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Caught completely off-guard by Nef's words, Jacinth can only stare, shifting her gaze back and forth between her and Zemwaar. "I...this is very sudden, but I certainly have no ability nor desire to bar you from staying with the Iron Bastion, if that is what you feel is best." Looking rather uncomfortable, she adds, "Er...yes, negotiations. I had wanted the two of you to aid in negotiating a contract to hire a few of Ko'oku'wa's men to sail with us and bolster our numbers. But..." she hesitates, struggling to find the right words.

Nef seems to be taking this very well, but showing some consideration here might be wise...even if it means more delays.

"Under the circumstances, I believe that can wait for a short time, if you wish." She looks away as the two continue to say their goodbyes, feeling distinctly uncomfortable and out of place despite others in the group being right there to bear witness as well.

To Jacinth

Rata nods to her reasoning, "Yes, I am sure many challenges await at Dolentla. Things could be very different after our time there comes to an end." He pauses as looks out over the waters for a moment and with a long sigh, he returns his gaze to Jacinth. "After the attack on my father's ship, I thought I would never set foot on another ship, and yet here I am. Sometimes, we don't always end up quite where we'd expect." he gives her a warm look.

"Your friends, I hope - for your sake and theirs - that they have the means to fight. That they are still struggling to survive and that we find them alive." He lifts his hands from the rails and straightens, wiping the grit from a long day's work from his calloused hands. "Nobles are an eccentric lot, but they're not all bad." He squints his face, mimicking a searching look, "Then again, they were friends of yours..." He gives Jacinth a wry smile. "We will speak tonight. Until then." He gives an almost imperceptible bow and then turns to see to other matters.

Presently

A sarcastic retort about how he wasn't some errand boy died on his lips as Rata realized that Nef deserved better than that, given her current emotional state. "Ah, yeah, of course Nef. I'll see to it." He walks over to the rail, pulling a dagger from his bandolier as he does so, and slices off a tiny splinter of wood before sticking the knife between his teeth and making his way across the rope bridge to the deck of the Rita...

Oren stood by quietly, not knowing what to say to assuage all the hurt feelings that had come up. He still only knew bits and pieces of what transpired over the last hour or so, but it had clearly brought submerged feelings bubbling right to the surface. He wasn't really one for sharing too awful much, and was beginning to feel a bit uncomfortable. Zem's goodbye wasn't for him, so he looked for anything else to occupy his time.

He heads toward the new captain of the vessel. "How would you propose we select our crewman. Would asking if any of them want to volunteer be acceptable to you? Or do you have a better idea?"

"If there's a shaman aboard this ship, she will be able to track the movements of the Rita with this sliver. If not, then Milliauka can do it when you reach shore. You'll know where we are. Ko'oku'wa watches the display of emotion between Nefertiti and Zemwaar silently, but he does wipe a couple of tears from his face before his stoic mask returns. "Yes, I believe it is time for us to continue with our negotiations." He then on impulse bows to her deeply. "I must again thank you for freeing ALL of us from the bondage we were trapped in." He then takes her hand in his. "Nefertiti, you have made a friend here and this will not go unnoticed."

He then motions for Zemwaar to follow him to below decks. "Well, my friend, it seems we have much to discuss..."

Zemwaar, feel free to post a final goodbye here, if you wish.

As the other Tulitan warriors gather around the elf Captain and listen to her call for a crew to help with the Rita, several of the more capable warriors confer quietly in Tulitan. After a brief discussion one of them speaks up in an accented tongue. "Yes, we would be willing to work for you, despite you being one of those who warred with us before. Your service for us has not been ignored. We will crew your vessel, for the standard wage as all sailors of the Razor expect."

The standard wage for crew in the Razor Coast is 1 GP/day per crewman. So 4 GP/day for hiring your crew. Feel free to haggle with them, if you wish.

Meanwhile, during all of this, Aikane has not been idle either....

While technically this should be spoiler-ed, I am not going to do that so we can get to the big reveal :D

After slipping away from the others, he slips below decks and proceeds to check out the rest of the Bastion that was missed earlier. In addition to the monies found earlier, he also runs across a weapons locker, securely locked. Fortunately, you were able to find a set of keys on the former Captain that you are confident will unlock this and any other locks you run across here. As he makes his way to the stern of the ship, he runs across the brig. Of interest is the fact the brig is occupied! Currently bound and gagged is a tall, muscular man dresses only in skivvies, his long hair trailing to his shoulders. Despite the bruises and welts all over his body, his tanned body, dark hair, and especially his dark eyes show him to be a warrior and a dangerous foe.

Also of note is the caged weasel which sits on a shelf across the brig. As the menehune studies the prisoner further, the other man wakes from his half-doze and eyes you in return...

OK, Edeldhur, INTRODUCE YOURSELF NOW! :D

"We're a little short on ready cash, and would appreciate whatever you can spare." She accepts suggestions from Zem on what cash needs the Bastion might have, for these are her people.

Then she says, earnestly to Ko'oku'wa, "As the Bastion is no longer a slave ship, perhaps it should have a bolder name. May I suggest the Kolohe*, in honor of how your freedom was won?"

*Tulita (Kolohe):

She also includes a request for a few of the slave chains from the hold. When she gets them, she has several of the men carry them to the edge of the ship, and toss them overboard.

Speaking to the waters, she says, "Whale, today the Eagle brings you chains that had once held your people. Accept this token of love and friendship as the joyous offering of freemen."

Ko'oku'wa wrote:

Nef sinks down to the deck, just staring into space. She's having a little trouble processing what just happened. The world that made sense only minutes before no longer does. It's only halfway into Oren's speech that it occurs to her that Oren is talking to her. What did he say?

She makes an effort to wipe her eyes dry and tries to focus on him. He's grinning. He must have made a joke.

She nods numbly through the fog in her brain and says, in a small, distant voice, "That's great, Opu."

Earlier, to Rata

Despite her attempt to maintain some degree of distance in the conversation, Jacinth can't help but chuckle in response to Rata's words. "That is very true. I certainly did not expect to find myself out here again and certainly not under these circumstances. And no, we certainly are not 'all bad'," she adds, feigning a stern expression. "Your resident proselytizer did not think so, at any rate," she returns with a wry smile of her own. However, her face then darkens as she thinks back to the sequences of events that led her to this moment. "Despite my own actions after the Dulcimer was destroyed, I hope that they yet survive as well," she murmurs. She glances at Rata before briefly turning her eyes to the sea, towards Dolentla Isle. "I hope that Nef and...you, at least, believe me when I say that." With a quiet sigh, she turns her attention back to Rata and nods. "Yes, tonight. Let us hope that we hit no more snags or delays between now and then."

Present

Feeling uncertain of what, if anything, she should say to the departing Zemwaar, Jacinth simply offers a nod of acknowledgement and respect in response to his parting words to the group.

A pity...our loss is Ko'oku'wa's gain, she sighs to herself once the warrior disappears below decks.

Perhaps sensing that the best thing for Nef at the moment is to remain focused and moving, Jacinth then steps back and allows her to see to the bulk of the negotiations regarding their new crew and the treasure to be found aboard the Iron Bastion, observing but remaining silent for the time being. Once everything is settled and their acquisitions are being loaded onto the Rita, Jacinth eyes the four newest members of her crew with an appraising, but pleased expression.

"Yes, welcome aboard! I am Jacinth Deepwarder, captain of the Rita. Many thanks to you for answering our call for additional crew," she calls, responding to Nef's call for introductions. "Once we have everything aboard, Nef or one of my other crew will show you to your sleeping quarters. There will also be the matter of revising our current shift schedule to accommodate the four of you, which should make for a significantly easier workload for us all." With a smile, she adds, "Let us hope that good fortune continues to smile upon us all. For now, you have your orders."

Diplomacy (Aid Another; New Crew): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Though her words to the new crew are sincere, Jacinth can't help but feel that she is overdoing it a bit on the enthusiasm. This is why you are not a diplomat like uncle...

As the crew continue to move supplies and treasure over to the Rita, she shakes her head at Oren's assessment of the possible repercussions of their actions. "We may be fortunate if I am able to keep my family on our side, let alone any of the rest of you, including Nef," she scowls. "Perhaps if we are able to return with all or most of my friends...otherwise, I am not sure how uncle will react to our little escapade here, when and if he hears of it."

Unbidden, an odd little thought flits across her mind.

What does it matter if uncle approves or not?

Oh? A few days at sea with a mixed crew of degenerates and now you fancy yourself a little rebel? Freeing slaves today, turning Port Shaw on its head tomorrow, perhaps?

Not...they are not degenerates.

A week ago you would have thought otherwise without missing a beat. What are you trying to prove, Jacinth? And to whom?

Jacinth closes her eyes for a moment and rubs at her temple, feeling the beginnings of a headache coming on. Casting about for yet another distraction from her own thoughts, it finally registers to her that Nef has sunk down onto the deck. She responds to Oren's words, but there is no hiding the sadness and defeat in her tone nor the tears she attempts to wipe away. The elven woman's expression softens somewhat and she carefully kneels down next to Nef in such a way as to shield her and her tears from Oren and anyone else standing close by. She looks the priestess in the eyes, casting about for words of comfort. She whispers, "Do you need some time to yourself, Nef? Or...do you wish to talk about it? Things seem to be under control for now; it would be no hardship to allow you to take a break from our work...as well as a second, if there is someone here that you would talk with."

Diplomacy (Nef; Please No Crying): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

She hoped that her words would offer some degree of help. Rather than ask ridiculous questions that had obvious answers such as, 'Are you okay?' and 'Will you be okay?', she preferred to focus on what could be done in the here and now. She had seen enough to know that some people need to be left to themselves during times of hardship while others desperately need someone or someones to cling to for dear life...and so, beginning with that question first and foremost seemed to her the best route to take.

Nef has to replay Jacinth's words in her head for a few moments before they penetrate the fog.

"I... I think I need someone to hold me. Just hold me."

I'm sure you can meet a ton of bloodthirsty pirates in Port Shaw that would cut off a finger to take your mind off that one," Oren smiles as he points to the other ship.

Nef leans into her friend's warm sweaty shoulder, smiling wanly at Oren's proposition despite herself. Oren was big and comforting, and his mere presence grounds her again. She wipes her face, and takes some deep breaths to get herself under control. She still has friends that she can rely on. Oren. Jacinth. Rata. Aikane. Even Ke'ahilani, a person she was starting to admire, despite all his exasperating qualities.

She gives Oren a sidelong look. "Just out of curiosity, how many fingerless bloodthirsty pirates do you think I'll need? I don't think one or two would do it. I might require a whole shipful."

"It's a good thing we're not in Port Shaw... Getting plastered seems like a great idea right now. Do you think there's any booze on this ship?", she asks wistfully, looking around the deck of the former slaver ship.

“Anything.”

He turned, kicked his staff up into his hands again, and stumped off towards a boat, preparing to go back to their ship.

Ke'ahilani's shout first makes Nef look startled, and then she laughs. Just laughs, helplessly, with Oren's arm still around her.

She turns to Oren. "You're right, Mission's afoot." She takes a deep breath, trying to refocus. "Let's get our new crew back to the Rita, orient them, and maybe get us all some food? After Lani's concoction, I have nothing left in me." She pauses to reflect a moment, and says, "And that surely isn't helping my already stretched emotional state."

She hugs Oren, and then gets up and hugs Jacinth. "Thank you both for checking in with me. Maybe work will help me take my mind off all of this..."

Slightly later

After the new supplies are loaded, she checks in with Ke'ahilan in his makeshift lab. She watches the tall man stump around his lab, muttering to himself. Her eyes water slightly from the noxious vapors pouring out of this room. Not wanting to startle him, she knocks lightly on the open door.

"Lani, I already know what favor I'm going to ask," she says, once he is looking at her. "Only you can tell me if it's reasonable or not. The thing is... Zem left me without a guide. Will you be my guide until he comes back? Will you teach me your culture, tell me when I'm being stupid, stand with me when I visit Tulita elders? Will you be my ally and my friend?"

Oren was glad to see Nef smile again. He wasn't particularly skilled at comforting, but he was quite skilled at drinking to forget things. "Don't worry. We'll find out exactly how many drinks it takes to get to the bottom of a bottle, and how many suitors it takes to make you forget about that fool. It'll be quite an adventure of its own."

Botting Aikane and Reknar...

Aikane stares at the prisoner for a long moment, his eyes slits as he calculates the worth of the man. "Well. I don't know who you are, but you are missing a party...definitely a party!" He starts looking over the key chain which holds several keys. Finding the one he is looking for, he quickly unlocks the brig door.

Tossing the keys to the former prisoner, he then turns to go. "I am sure you can figure out the rest on your own. You seem like a smart man...I would not wait too long though. This...Party won't last long!"

After Reknar is left alone, he manages to finish freeing himself from his manacles. Unlocking his weasel from the cage, he mutters quietly to himself. [smaller]"Well, Underdog that little menehune sure showed up at the right time there. Something big must have happened uptop. Let's find my gear and get the Hell out of here...what da ya say?" His weasel chitters in agreement, as he moves to the weapons locker and finds it holding all of his gear, not to mention his clothing.

It is not long before Reknar makes his way up top, seeing conditions aboard the ship far different than when he was imprisoned by Hazeltree...

Nef breaks off mid-sentence, as she sees another fully-clothed and weaponed slaver emerge unescorted from below decks.

Where did he come from? Didn't we search this ship?

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18

She stands, placing herself protectively between some of the Tulita children and this beat-up stranger that they had somehow missed in their search. "Easy friend, easy," she says in common to the new man. "You don't want this fight. Surrender now, and I'll help see you back to your crewmates."

"Wait a goddamn moment..." - Reknar whispers at Aikane, but the Menehune is already gone.

Not one to waste much time pondering on the boons life throws his way, the man immediately gets to work on his bonds, extricating himself from his shackles, and releasing 'Dog' - "What the heck have we gotten ourselves into?"

With a few strong kicks he bursts through the planks where he knows his gear is stashed, and not knowing what he will find up top, gears up appropriately, gaining a semblance of a veritable implement of warfare - two well used, enormous hafted polearms across his backpack in easy reach; multiple weapons dotting his simple, travelling attire - a mace to one side, a dagger and a sling to the other, all complemented by a well made longbow.

In spite of all the gear carried, he moved casually, sporting only a breastplate to protect the torso - his massive frame seemingly having no difficulties in carrying the great load, he took a few couple of steps back and forth to test his balance - "I'm ready"

His dark hair was disheveled and matted with blood, his skin quite sun tanned, but marred by bruises and cuts - none of it dimmed the glow in his dark, black eyes, even if one of them bore the notorious purple of having been recently hit.

As soon as Reknar gets up top, he realizes things are all messed up - the Tulita are celebrating something, there are none of the crew around, while on the other hand there are several new faces - "What the..." - the words die in his mouth as a young woman approaches him.

Jacinth opened her mouth to tell them both, especially Oren, just how idiotic of an idea this was...and then shut it again as she grudgingly remembered that she had just offered Nef, and a friend, a little time off from work if she wished to take it. Before she can think of slightly more...diplomatic response, Ke'ahilani's shout makes her jump. "Are...are we sure he was not also dropped on his head as a child?" she asks, staring wonderingly at the witchdoctor.

Well...at least Ke'ahilani's antics are good for more than just fooling a ship full of slavers!

Feeling rather relieved that the commotion seems to have snapped Nef out of her funk, at least for the moment, Jacinth tentatively returns her hug. "You are welcome. If you feel that work will help you maintain focus then I am sure we can find plenty for you to do," she says, smiling slightly. "But yes, first you need to eat. Otherwise we will be picking you up off the floor in short order!"

"While perhaps a ah...evening out once we return to Port Shaw might be in order, is that really a wise idea for Nef?" She gives the priestess an appraising look. "Something a little more...low-key that does not involve collecting fingers would be more relaxing, I imagine."

Any further dialogue is interrupted by the appearance of the strange man from below decks, clothed and armed. Jacinth stops short and gives the man a searching look as Nef adopts a defensive posture and offers to return him to the rest of the Iron Bastion's former crew. She relaxes as the man's words clearly indicate that while he might not be a friend to them, there is certainly no love lost between him and the rest of the slaver crew. Giving a nod of appreciation to Oren for his words, she steps forward.

"My crewman here has the right of it, at least partially. I am Jacinth Deepwarder, captain of the Rita," she sweeps her arm to indicate the smaller vessel currently positioned alongside the Iron Bastion. "As you can see, there has been a slight change of command here aboard this vessel," she continues pleasantly. "The former crew are currently sitting out there somewhere in lifeboats," she points out in the general direction that the slavers went, "and Captain Hazeltree is...resting down in the depths," she grimaces. "The Bastion's new captain would be Ko'oku'wa, should you wish to speak with him. But before then, I am curious...you do not seem to think highly of the former crew. Why might that be?"

Nef stares at the newcomer for a long while. Maybe it was the bruises, or his blunt speech, or the cute little weasel poking out of his pack, but she felt strongly that she could trust him. Her gut reaction was so strong that she turns back to so that she can exchange a look with Zem, the way she always did, the big Moamasu serving as her other set of eyes and ears.

And then she remembers that Zem is not behind her. She can't check in with him, though in fact they are still on the same ship, if only for a few minutes longer. She feels Zem's loss all over again like a sharp jab in the stomach.

Deep breath. Breathe. You can DO this. You MUST do this.

Oren stands by, still slightly wary, not quite sure what to make of the bruised human. He knows the others were better judges of character than he, so he waits for a nod before lowering his defenses, and relaxing. Surely the man wasn't crazy enough to take on a whole armed crew...plus Nef's large chicken, was he?

After finishing transferring the remaining supplies for the additional crew you hired over to the Rita, you all prepare to part ways. Zemwaar stands at the helm of the newly-christened Kolohe and calls out to his former teammates

"This is indeed a farewell...but I know it will be a short one. Our paths shall cross again. This I know in my heart...and in your hearts as well." His gaze lingers on Nefertiti as he utters the last words.

Then he motions for his crew to cast off the lines tying the two ships together and once again the Rita finds herself on her way. You all see the Kolohe heel over and set sail back the way you came. Jacinth gives the order to resume your own course towards Dolenta Island...minus the conscience of the group. Time will tell whether this former slaver, the one who calls himself Reknar will prove an adequate replacement for the Tulitan warrior.

You proceed northwards again, the progress slow due to the lack of wind. You all grow concerned as the so-called 'doldrums' persist through the day. You all feel the time slipping away for those you were sent to rescue....

As the afternoon drags on into evening, the winds finally pick up, heading in a westerly direction. While not a broad reach, it does allow the Rita to finally make some progress here. The seas are quiet as the sun heads towards the horizon signifying the onset of evening...

Reknar (and everyone else), feel free to backfill your character's introduction to one another here.

PRESENT -- The Rita -- 1000 hours to 1900 hours

1000 hours

Back home on the Rita, Nef throws herself into her work. There is a new crew to orient. She gives the five new men a brief tour of the Rita, finding them berths and explaining the Rita task roster. She tries to get to know each of the four warriors of the people, as well as the strange huge man, Recknar, who bristles all over with weaponry.

And I thought Zem was large.

"Aloha. I'm Nefertiti, ship's steward and cook. Unless..." she asks hopefully, "one of you also cooks?" Seeing no one who cooks, she sighs and continues with her orientation. "You can call me, Nef, though. We're pretty informal here on the Rita."

During the tour, she elicits little details from each of the four warriors. Kaleo had sung ribald lyrics in bars all over Port Shaw. Butterfly, a small shy man with nimble fingers, explained that he made jewelry, and offered Nef a bracelet that he had woven out of fishing wire. Dirty Pete had been a potter, and showed Nef that clay still clung under his fingernails. All three were Moamasu.

The fourth warrior is the aptly nicknamed 'Maka the Eye.' Maka was Kamu, hefty and squat with a wandering eye that perpetually drifted from whatever he tried to focus upon. It gave his face an almost comical expression, though Maka was by far the most serious of the four. He'd been a fisherman and had been caught by the raiders when he was on the way home with his catch.

For Recknar's sake, she gives the tour in Common, but a couple times she switches to Tulita in response to a question from one of the others, shifting back and forth between the two languages seamlessly. She does ask the warriors, briefly in Tulita, "Are all of you okay working with him?" To her relief, the four Tulita warriors nod, not seeming to hold a grudge against the large man.

This raises Recknar in her estimation, but she's still curious. She peers up at him. "How did someone like you wind up working with those bastards from the Bastion?"

Then she pauses, looking him over. Had the slavers missed any spot of him when they'd worked him over with their fists? "Recknar, hold still a moment. I won't send someone up to the tops in this battered of a state."

She touches him lightly on the only non-bruised spot she can see on his arm.

Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

"Does that feel better?" She studies him. He looks better, certainly. "You, Maka and Dirty Pete are on Team One, which means you all have a little free time right now. You can use it to take a rest, explore the ship, or meet the other crew here. However, like me, I bet that you're hungry. If you come back in forty minutes, I should have something hot ready."

She tosses Butterfly and Kaleo each a piece of fruit and says, "I'll be delivering your meals to the tops later. I'll see you then and check in, okay?"

All NPC details double-checked with GM prior to posting. I figure we can backfill Recknar's intro scene when he posts again.

1000 Hours

As the Rita once again gets underway, Jacinth can't help but sigh with frustration as the doldrums show no signs of ceasing anytime soon. While they struggle to make headway, she attempts to keep her own mind occupied by watching as Nef orients their new crew to the ship; giving them the grand tour and explaining their duties and schedule. Though aware that Nef is doing this for herself as much as for the good of the crew as a whole, she can't help but smile as the priestess throws herself into the task with gusto, as with everything that Jacinth has seen her do.

She may not make for much of a sailor, but I could not ask for a better steward.

As Nef heads below decks to begin preparing the midday meal, Jacinth offers her a wave and an approving nod before she disappears from sight. The elven woman then sighs again as she turns back to the helm, wishing for some sort of distraction to keep her mind from immediately wandering back to the morning's events...or of her upcoming chat with Rata later. She glances upward as Butterfly and Kaleo make their way up to the tops.

Those two need to focus on their work...Rata...Rata I will speak to later...

Looking around, her eyes settle on the remaining three of the new crew. Right now, any distraction will do.

"Maka, is it?" she calls, hoping to catch the hefty man before he wanders off. "I overheard Nef speaking with all of you earlier. You said that you are a fisherman by trade?" She waits a moment for his reply before continuing. "Ah, very good. I...do not know a great deal about your trade but perhaps if we can cobble together the supplies that you need, assuming we do not already have them, you could help to supplement our provisions?" she asks, somewhat awkwardly attempting to make conversation. "I am sure Nef would be able to put anything caught to good use...possibly with a little assistance!"

Diplomacy (Making Small Talk): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

As soon as the words leave her lips, Jacinth realizes with a sinking feeling that she's just asked one of her new crew to spend his spare time fishing...when he might actually prefer to do something else with it, such as rest. Her face flushes red with embarrassment and she hurriedly mutters, "Er...just a suggestion. Do not worry about it. Ah, enjoy your free time..."

Attempting to save face, she turns her attention to the ex-slaver Reknar, coughing slightly to get his attention. "Ah...Reknar? I am sure that you will hear this question more than once today, but humor me for a moment, if you will. Once our business on Dolentla is concluded and we return to Port Shaw, what do you think you will do from there?"

Diplomacy (Small Talk Take Two): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

I have nothing in common with these men...what on earth am I thinking here? I was better off remaining silent...

Some retconing:

Oren shoots a crooked eye at the newcomer. He appreciates the purplish and yellow eye the sailor sported. "I bet I've got the gist, but how about you tell us what you were doing on this ship? Captain Jacinth is the boss of our crew. Best remember your manners while explaining yourself to her," the hefty Tulitan points out, nodding toward the Captain.

"I was part of the crew" - the man answers - "Was getting scarce on coin, and had to find some way to get food in my mouth, so I joined this 'so called' trading vessel - guess I really should have known what I was getting into but heh, they took me aboard without many questions" - he chuckles.

"Well met Captain Deepwarder" - the man nods - "Name's Reknar, and there really isn't much to like about them is there, the former crew. I mean... From the conversations I overheard, some of them are just trying to make a living, and I guess that's ok" - he shrugs - "Unless you're not doing it at someone else's expenses - then you gotta be able to step up to the plate if called about it. Doesn't really matter in the end does it? They made their choice to stick on the side of their stinking captain when he ordered them to beat and shackle me up" - his tone gets somewhat more grim - "So if you ask me, the longboats are too good for them"

He does seem to sketch somewhat of a grin when he hears Hazeltree has been thrown overboard - "I just hope he gets to swim well enough to get eaten by the sharks"

"Some of the lads in the crew thought they could rough me up only because I was in shackles - guess life gets boring in tight quarters" - he answers Rata - "And rough me up they did alright. Cost one of them an ear though... Of course then they roughed me up harder, but it was worth it"

As he answers all the questions thrown at him, a momentarily silence seems to install itself, which Reknar promptly breaks - "You wouldn't be needing an extra hand would you, Captain Deepwarder? I think my time aboard the Bastion has wore itself out. I may not be the most expert seaman in the Razor, but I know my way around the ropes. Doesn't even matter where you are going if you pay me half decently" - he asks without hesitation.

I'm cool with more retconning, if anyone is interested ;)

After an exhaustive search of the smelly hold and brig, Aikane slides carefully up the stairs shaking his head. He is glad he is still disguised as an unremarkable sailor. He is more appreciative of his freedom.

If the crew or captain were to recognize him in Shaw, that would be ... unfortunate. Feel free to rule me out on this one Kraken, but I've been operating under the idea that Aikane plays down the stuff that differentiates him from a normal gnome.

Such is the life of a menehune away from home.

Aikane steps out on deck through the hole Reknar used. He shakes his head a bit, as if to signal nothing worthwhile. Character Aikane assumes all the loot except what he "Found on the one sailor's bunk" was kept in the Captain's Quarters above deck. My narrative is that he only found the pearls down there. The stongbox and bars of gold would have been in the captain's cabin, right? *But I'm no real life pirate*

"I took the diagonal" the little humanoid offers by way of explanation.

She nods sympathetically. "My first month in the Razor was pretty awful too. If I hadn't met Oren..." she points out Oren's solid and heavily tattooed frame, from where the wizard stood on the deck, looking out at the sea. "He was kind. Like a big brother, he went out of his way to help me. He taught me Tulita, guided me around town, got me on my feet... and never hit on me once."

"Then I met..." Zem. She breaks off her story, a look of pain flashing in her eyes. "I'm sorry, I'm blathering, aren't I?" She takes a deep breath, and says, "To make a long story short, friends made all the difference to me here. This is a good group of people, caring and loyal. You treat them right, and they'll return the favor over and over."

Reknar wrote:

"Hmmm... I've never been called a bastard, but I am the daughter of a bonded concubine," she admits. "My father never married my mother." She grins back at him. "Maybe we should find a different insult to sling at your former crewmates. Shall we just call them 'scum' and be done with it?"

She notices the man's tension. Careful, she thinks. This one has been hurt so often that he just expects it. Nef raises an eyebrow. "It was my pleasure," she says. "I don't mean to pry, but... years? That seems a long time for someone who's clearly not afraid of a fight."

Reknar wrote:

Nef's eyes widen, both pleased and surprised by the question. Since arriving in the Razor, she'd been far better at getting people to follow her than Horus. Even her friends didn't show much interest in the god for whom she'd crossed an ocean to find a new home. "That's a complex question." And a very interesting one... This one's a thinker. "If you're really interested... I'd be overjoyed to tell you about Horus."

"However, your religious education will come with a price. Are you ready to pay it?" she asks with a smile. "You're going to have to introduce me to your furry friend -- the cute one currently peering at me from inside your pack."

"Also, I'd love to know where you're from. I hail from Katheer in the Satrapy of Qadira."

"I would love a hand with the cooking," she says with a smile. "I'm no good at it either. I'll tell you what. I badly need distractions today. Someone to talk to, keep my mind off..." she breaks off again, and finally admits, "Victory against your former crewmates aside, I've had a very rough, very emotional morning."

"I just need to keep busy. Afterwards, I can help you scrub that deck. Hey, maybe we can get Oren to help us and make a party of the job."

Assuming that he answers her earlier questions...

When she talks about Horus, Nef's eyes light up. Though forgotten in the land of his birth, to Nefertiti the ancient god is a daring champion of justice and liberty. While they work, she shares stories freely about her childhood fantasy about Horus flying in and freeing her and her mother, and how she pledged herself to her deity young. "Horus led me here, to the Razor, and to the people of my heart." She tells Reknar about meeting Zem and Elemakule and her vow of service to the Tulita. Though she maintains a cheerful tone, there are pauses every time Zem's name comes into her conversation before she struggles forward once again. "Horus died once before, and was resurrected. I see no reason why he can't fly high here in the Razor, serving a people who desperately need him, and chasing the desert from their shores."

That is correct. There was a safe where the treasure was kept in the Captain's quarters. The pearls was NOT part of that though.

1200-1800 hours

Post lunch hour, Nef checks in with all the new crew. She goes flying for a bit with Wedjat during her free time, trying to banish the dull ache in her heart. When she sees Wedjat diving down towards Recknar's little weasel she screams, "Down, Wedjat! That's a friend, not food!"

Handle Animal: 1d20 + 10 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 10 + 4 = 18

The bird screes in protest, and wheels away from the terrified weasel at the last possible moment, but then keeps hopping around the deck, eyeing the creature. Nef flames in embarrassment especially as she hears howling laughter from others on the crew.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20

This leaves Nef apologizing profusely to Reknar. "I'm sorry! He'll behave now, I promise! I should have thought of this and introduced them before, but I was so preoccupied..."

Feeling terrible, she does a full inventory of the new supplies -- and discovers several bottles of Rum that had been loaded with the other food supplies from the Kolohe. Oren's words float back to her about finding out exactly how many drinks it would take to get to the bottom of a bottle.

Appraise: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

She has no idea if the rum is even good or not. Nef had never been much of a drinker. The only time she'd even gotten tipsy before was at her sister's instigation, when she'd drunk several glasses of date wine at a party.

But Oren had promised that she could forget. And the memory of Zem burned so strongly inside her she doesn't know how much longer today she could bear having him blaze inside her.

She grabs Oren. "Opu, can you come with me a moment?"

She marches them both off to find Jacinth, knocking gently on the cabin door. When the door opens, she asks, "Kaiku, do I have your permission to be stupid? Really, really stupid? I know you said I could have a few hours off... I found some rum in the inventory. Can I use it to get Oren and I trashed tonight?"

The plan to get roaring drunk later, even though she knows how stupid it is, calms her and helps her better face the prospect of this awful day with its clear and faultless blue sky. Zem's gone. Why is the sun shining?

She continues to work through the rest of her free time slot, relentlessly through every task she can think of until 1800 hours when she prepares to visit the bowsprit and once again tell a story to Whale, just before sunset...
