The town of Torch has long enjoyed a singular claim to prosperity-a violet flame that burns atop Black Hill in the heart of the town. This flame burns incredibly hot, and while it's usually the size of a bonfire, several times a year the fires spew up into the heavens in a brilliant beam of purple violence.

These eruptions are presaged by about an hour of soft rumbling, giving nearby smiths a chance to retreat before the fires can consume them. At all other times, the violet energies allow for the smelting of all manner of skymetal.

Torch is one of the only locations where skymetal can be worked with relative ease outside of Starfall, and its entire economy has risen around these purple flames, with traveling smiths coming from across Avistan to pay for the opportunity to work with them. Of course, Torch needs all the visiting trade and coin it can gather, for while the
town's distance from Starfall makes it inconvenient for the Technic League to maintain a permanent presence here, the taxes and tariffs it charges the Numerian town on a monthly basis are significant.

The town prospers, but the bulk of its income does not belong to it.
Which is why, when the fires atop the hill suddenly go out, the town is in trouble.

I have just completed the Iron gods AP for my live group and had a lot of fun with it. So while it's still fresh in my mind and heart I thought I'd see how another group deals with the challenges in this fun AP?

Torch is looking for 4-6 bold heroes to find out why the purple flames have died and restore the towns source of fame and wealth if possible.

Details:

I have 1 player already selected, playing a Barbarian.
20 point buy.
No 3PP please.
2 traits, one from the Iron gods players guide. No Drawbacks.
Good or neutral alignment preferred.
I run a fast game, so 1 or 2 posts a day minimum is needed. If you are unable to post for a time let me know and we can arrange for your absence.
Iron gods has a nice range of challenges, including the monsters, so don't over specialize on Robot killing. It will bite you in the ass. :)

Any questions or builds you wish me to consider let me know.

I'm interested. I have a Neutral Good Human Impossible Sorcerer waiting in the wings.

I'm interested if you're willing to tolerate a LG gunslinger with a thing for pistols.

Iron Gods is the Gunslingers paradise. :)

Sounds like fun.

If allowed to join, would a CG Half-Elf Investigator be a good choice for Iron Gods?

I do have a question as well; is it alright if I start with the Technologist feat, or would you prefer none of us start with that?

TheRealZaal wrote:

Sure, it's a campaign that is good for a wide range of characters. Investigators will have plenty of room to shine.

My live group went through Iron Gods with a Brawler, Arcanist, Cleric of Brigh and a Rogue/Ranger/Gunslinger who specialized in Robot slaying. Which is why I put in the advice about over-specializing.

ThatCanadianDude wrote:

I don't have a problem with people starting out with the Technologist feat. you can be a local, or a Numerian native quite easily.

I missed out stating that you can use Backgrounds skills in creating your character.

Don't worry. I won't specialize in killing just robots. I'll kill all the enemies of justice equally. lol

GM_DBH wrote:

Just to confirm, that's the one where we get 2 extra skill ranks to use in a small amount of usually non-adventurous skills, correct?

Correct.

Just to make things clear, what would our starting gold be?

Liberty's Edge

Dot, I have an Android Arcanist that's all about nannies.

Start with the maximum for your class.

I am going to put something together for this in the next few days.

I'm going to submit Valeria for your consideration, a Human gunslinger with the Pistolero archetype, with a vendetta against the Technic League for killing her parents.

GM_DBH, how do you feel about the re-training rules? I was thinking about keeping the Pistolero archetype until about 5th level or so and then, as Valeria gets more exposure to tech weapons, taking the Technologist feat and switching over to the Techslinger archetype from there.

Oh cool. There's gonna be 2 gunsligners who hate the Techies for reasons in the lineup for recruitment. Let's be gun buddies. =D

Silver Crusade

Alrighty, I believe I have Saria Cambert, Impossible Sorcerer, ready for inspectiono and consideration.

We use Retraining in our live game, so I'm fine with it. Most of our characters adjusted their career paths when we became more familiar with all the strange and wonderful tech we came across.

Valeria looks like a viable character to me.

Looks good, any background for her?

Not strictly necessary but it helps me see how the party fits together.

Hmmm... since it's Iron Gods, does that mean Android is on the table as a race choice? If so, back story will practically write itself :)

Saria Cambert is a human sorcerer who just... arrived in Torch one day, several years ago. Wall-eyed, and wearing a purple robe with sleeves too big for her hands, most folks just gave her confused looks. Fortunately for her, a few hours after her arrival, a small robot came into town and began attacking a local tavern. Folks began to panic, and they called for Khonnir Baine, the town's resident expert on such things. He arrived to find Saria, sitting down and petting the robot, which had, somehow, fallen asleep. Needless to say, he was both impressed and incredibly confused. After permanently deactivating the robot, he asked Saria why she had come to Torch. She shrugged, and simply replied "I like robots. I heard there were robots here." Chuckling at the response, he offered to teach the girl what he knew about the strange technology of Numeria, alongside his adopted daughter Val, who Saria would come to look upon(in a manner of speaking, as her wall-eyes made looking at things kinda difficult) as a sister.

Does that work?

That's fine, I thought it would be something easy like that with your 'Local ties' trait.

Here goes, fingers crossed :)

Arrenopos background:
Arrenopos awoke about six months ago. He has no knowledge of where he came from or who he is. He was found by Khonnir Baine in the wastes outside of Torch. Khonnir recognized him for what he is and helped ease him into human society and helped disguise his true nature. Arrenopos has skills that he is still coming to realize. The last six months have been vexing for him, especially when dealing with Khonnir’s daughter, Val. Human emotions still confuse him despite his intense scrutiny. Khonnir’s tutelage has been invaluable though and Arrenopos is slightly more comfortable on his own now among the population of Torch. Khonnir has also taught Arrenopos about his true nature. This has only deepened his unease. Who is he? What purpose was he created for? Despite his progress, Arrenopos continues to have a deep seated and irksome feeling that he has some specific purpose and this “feeling” is disquieting to him. What that purpose is though, still evades him.

Would you allow a Ratfolk? I've got a great idea for a Tinkerer alchemist.

I forgot to add Races to the details didn't I?

All races will be considered, so no problems with Ratfolk.

Liberty's Edge

Here he is. The main gist is that Khonnir adopted him, magically disguising him as a human and never telling him that he's an Android, possibly to hide him from the Technic League. He's heavily nanite-focused, what with his bloodline and all, and will be a magic and mechanical dabbler (I'll take Technologist and possibly crafting feats).

In hindsight, that Alsande had no memories before his 18 years should have been a clue. That he had an uncanny knack for working with all kinds of gizmos and trinkets could have been another. But when a man named Khonnir Baine shelters you, teaching the tools of his trade and spinning you the tragic tale of how you were the only survivor of a devastating caravan attack, you don't start wondering whether you're actually an android in disguise. Especially if you really are an android, as they are notoriously prone to misunderstanding emotions.

For about six years, Alsande lived in Khonnir's house, working in his lab. He was extremely skilled with magic, assisting Khonnir in the creation of many an item and the repairing of many a trinket. He was frail and awkward around people; his only true friend was Baine's daughter, Val, but he didn't mind. He had a passion for the craft, as if craftsmanship was flowing in his veins. And indeed it was, through nanites.

A week Khonnir went missing, a worried Alsande noticed something weird going on with his appearance, as if a disguising spell was fading. His dark hair was turning silk-white, his skin was taking an ashen coloration, and even his eyes seemed to be bleaching. But, most unnervingly, circuit tattoos were emerging on his skin. Circuit patterns that Alsande knew very well. The mark of an android. Val was as shocked as he was by this sudden transformation but her reaction should be written once I know her personality.

Set on finding out the truth about his origins, and why Khonnir had hidden the truth, there was only one decision he could take. He grabbed his spellbook, some gear, and set off to finding him.

Why did Khonnir magically disguise Alsande? Why didn't he tell him the truth? Where did he come from? A few plot hooks.

--------------------
Appearance
Alsande used to look like a normal human, with black hair and brown eyes, but that was before the magic hiding his real nature wore off. Now he's weirldy colorless, his hair, eyes and skin all in the same shade of pearl-grayish white. He's of medium height and feeble corporature, and he usually dresses in an artificer's outfit, with a cotton shirt (recently dyed a bright blue to provide the color his carnation is missing) and leather breeches (dyed a deep red).

--------------------
Personality
Alsande used to be an awkward, introverted, geekish kid. This hasn't changed much, except that, of lately, he has decidedly freaked out. The discovery of his nature has made him restless, anxious and worried, a bad match for the android's innate lack of social capabilities. He's the tipe of guy who could speak for a couple hours about something he found interesting (usually related to magic, engineering or craftworks), without thinking whether his interlocutor is understanding even a single word. He could, as well, unwillingly offend people with a remark that he thought to be innocent.

As for alignment, I wrote him LN to represent both his dedication to magic and crafts and the fact that he hasn't yet been faced with any significant moral decision.

Background:

Harrash is the product of the "half-elf baby dilemma." He was discovered in the outskirts of Numeria by androids who assumed his parents had abandoned him.

While they tried to make the correct decision by adopting him, they didn't give him the affection that a humanoid requires, although they had no way of knowing so. Harrash, for his part, bears no particular affection for androids. As soon as he could, he fled his adoptive parents' house to live in the outskirts of Torch, where he met an ape, which seems more human to him than robots, or even most humanoids. He is not interested in decimating all androids, but he is suspicious of all androids and robots, and doesn't want to be at all lenient with them.

Harrash lacks a sense of humor and has a pessimistic outlook on life due to his upbringing. When Khonnir disappeared, Harrash naturally suspected robots or androids, and decided to make sure that they wouldn't cause more harm than they already had.

I think I might make some minor changes afterwards (probably based on whatever group is chosen), but all the important information can be found above. (If the animal companion is a problem, I can get rid of the archetype.)

"The torch is out. Lancerlot" she holds up a little scorpion "says my powers come form the torch. I can't be just a cobbler. I need to be a magic cobbler. How can I help?"

After some technical difficulties (oh the irony), I have Tybalt ready for examination.

I would like to submit Penok, a Young Kellid man whose been haunted by the soul of an ancient spacefarer. The being is filled with rage and rarely forms coherent thought. Penok has spent the past few years travelling across Numeria to try to understand the ghost that haunts him. Recently, it has been demanding he go to Torch.

Dotting. :)

Would you allow a non-elf to take the Spire Defender archetype?

I'm thinking of a half-orc, taken in as an infant by an elven magi after the magi was responsible for the death of the character's parents.

Grand Lodge

I have a Gnome Alchemist tinkerer in the process of being built.

Dotting

This is Adrien Belmont, a summoner who arrived in Numeria years ago after having spent his childhood growing up in Brevoy learning of Numerian machines through scholarly books. While training as a mage he gave it up and ran away to Numeria and became an archaeologist. This obviously caused him some grief with the Technic League and on his first run-in with him they nearly killed him in the caves. He stumbled over an old rod and tried to use it to defend himself and accidentally awakened an ancient automaton (his eidolon) who's defensive programming kicked in and it killed Adrien's attackers brutally. Over the intervening years Adiren has been traveling with the robot, who he named Ozymandias, and has currently arrived in Torch.

@GM_DBH: How do you feel about Variant Multiclassing? If you are okay with it, I would like to submit Ryder-XIII, an android empiricist investigator (vmc gunslinger).

Adrien's eidolon has stats listed on this alias, just so you know.

How would you feel about allowing the Inevitable eidolon to have access to some other natural attacks besides Slam if I were to come up with a logical reason why his eidolon has that attack type? This character was originally built as a non-Unchained summoner and his Eidolon was intended to be heavily focused on battlefield control with things like Push, Pull, and Grab but doing so with one natural attack type is rough and those abilities aren't all compatible with just slam if I remember correctly.

This would be a bit later on as his starting evolution points are used for other things. Also, are you alright with the half-elf alternate favored class bonus that grants 1/4 of an evolution point every level?

I'd be interested. Have a Sanctified Slayer Inquisitor of Brigh in mind, I'll get a backstory and stat block posted.

Grand Lodge

I submit jack, a medium of all trades. Short backstory: Jack having contact with the spirits enabled a quest for esoteric knowledge of all sorts. He prides himself as a man who can handle anything and solving a grand mystery such as why the lights went out is irresistible.

Dotting. I'm thinking about a dwarven iron priest of Torag who works the forge at Torch and has become enamored with the advanced technology. He would work especially well with constructs in the party.

Hi GM, I'd like to submit here Wings, an Elf archer :) He is a Magus using the Eldritch Archer archetype, with a backstory connected to Torch and the Technic League.

I will build an android unchained rogue (Numerian scavenger) and post ASAP. Multiple posts a day sold me!

I have to switch a trait back, but this guy was designed for Iron Gods. Local boy with a golden tongue.

Arknight No to a non-elf getting the Spire defender archetype.

Talomyr No to VMC .

Adrien Belmont No to the extra abilities for your Eidolon.
