With a thump, Venture-Captain Brackett sets a rounded granite stone on his desk. The stone is polished smooth and veined with shallow carvings reminiscent of constellations. This is a lorestone, from the depths of the Verduran Forest. It’s rumored to hold all of the secrets of the druids of that ancient wood. Just over two years ago, a group of Pathfinders recovered this stone for us. We’re not much closer to cracking its secrets than we were on the day those agents put it into our hands, but we have gleaned one interesting bit of knowledge. The lorestone tells of a lengthy ritual using an artifact called the Atavistic Splinter, a piece of charred bark touched by Gozreh himself. The ritual transforms humanoids into bestial creatures with preternatural resilience. We could use something with this kind of power for the upcoming Ruby Phoenix Tournament in Goka, so we need you to recover the Atavistic Splinter for us. We believe the artifact is near the gnome town of Wispil, deep in the Verduran Forest. A Pathfinder operative there — a gnome herbalist named Falbin — was investigating increased lycanthrope activity south of Wispil. Falbin discovered that a sinister cabal of druids in a compound called Briar Henge is using the Atavistic Splinter to perform the ritual, probably to drive out the local loggers, but he couldn’t recover the Atavistic Splinter from the druids by himself. Go to Wispil and contact Falbin there. He will provide you with directions to Briar Henge and recent intelligence regarding the situation around Wispil. Then use this information to infiltrate Briar Henge and acquire the Atavistic Splinter."

Brackett is the Pathfinder Society’s venture-captain in Almas, the capital of Andoran. He is a middle-aged swordsman who is fastidious and professional in his duties.

Mikail walks into the room and looks around. "Good morning everyone! I am Mikail, I look forward to traveling with you." Looking to the Venture Captain, Mikail asks "What are the laws in place around the area? Are the loggers invading the druids grove or are the druids just reacting to the logging in general? And has anyone been hurt by the lyncanthropes yet?"

Maldrek slowly stood up from his chair, shaking hands with his new colleagues. He was less than 6 feet tall, but forcefully build, with green eyes, small amount of gray hair and signature crude horns. His breastplate was decorated with gold, depicting an open mouth of dragon, while his cloak was red wool with golden threads. He had a big warhammer, standing on the floor, near his chair. Large letters "BRAINSPLASHR" could be see on weapons head.

"Hello, my friends! This is second time, I hear that interests of Pathfinder Society is affected by strange curses and diseases: first in Absalom museum, which was infected by strange Mwangi mist, now here. I'm proud to say, it's hard for me to be afraid of such things, because of my heritage. So you should fear not as well. My name is Maldrek of Gold Dragon Order and I feel optimistic about recovering that Atavistic Splinter for future research."

"The druids are using the ritual to turn any humanoids near Briar Henge into savage half-animal beasts resulting in the increased lycanthrope activity. I'm afraid loggers are also affected, but we don't know how many of them. The law is clear, the loggers are cutting wood legally. But as always nobody asked the druids in the ancient forests." Brackett answers. Hearing your discussion about silver he adds "Silver and Cold Iron will for sure help with this kind of threats."

The Atlavistic Splinter is sheet piece of charred bark about two feet long, ten inches wide, and an inch thick. The ritual robs the animal-men
of their wits but imbues them with physical power. That’s really all we know. Despite their bestial appearance, these animal-men aren’t lycanthropes. Falbin will know more. The ritual takes several weeks. But as it will take almost two weeks to get to Wispil from here, you’d better hurry on your way. If these druids finish the ritual, they might take the Atavistic Splinter away to some better-hidden location.

Taldor has been at peace with the druids of the Verduran Forest for hundreds of years, since the Treaty of Wildwood in 3841 ar.

Briar Henge is constructed with living walls of spiky briars. If the druids have allied with fey, they might have good relations with twig jacks, malicious fey creatures made of thorns.

"Very good to know. So we need to get this sliver thingy and bring it back here. The Druids are not likely to give this up willingly, but while we are there, should we try and broker a deal between the druids and the loggers or are we to leave them to thier own wars?" Mikail grimaces at the politics of the task in front of them, but more than that, he is very unsettled about the idea of having to cut his way through the druids for someone else's gain. I am not a hired executioner. I will defend myself, but this just seems like two very different groups that can't see eye to eye.. and i should pick up more of the blanch before we leave town

"I have enough of both" answered Maldrek to Brackett's comment about silver and cold iron.

"Before jumping to conclusions", he nods to Mikail, "let's speak with Falbin. Since he was there, when it all started, he might know what to expect and how we can reason those druids. I don't actually like acquire word here, this usually points to some illegal actions, but I'm willing to speak with druids of Briar Hedge on Society behalf and find out negotiation conditions on temporary use of Atavistic Splinter."

Kardiv shakes his head, We can't simply leave them to continue this conflict. We need to work with both sides to find a lasting solution, be it finding a different grove for loggers to cut, or replanting trees after they deforest an area, but I have no intentions of leaving these problems to grow and worsen.

The journey to Wispil is without any incidents.

Wispil is a bustling town built on a small scale — although humans and elves walk the streets, most buildings are built to accommodate the gnomes who live and work in Wispil. The scent of fresh-cut lumber wafts through the town. Falbin’s home is not difficult to find. It is situated on the south edge of the town, with a large garden spreading out behind it. Most of the garden is obscured by high growth, but the sound of a violent argument carries into the street. Although it is not yet dark, firelight glimmers from within the garden walls.

In the garden are three men and an unconscious gnome. The man are setting everything on fire.
