Morythine shuffles back slightly at Olympus’ introduction; somewhat uncomfortable in the presence of Tobias’ feathered friend. As his companions gather around to get a better look at the roc, he slips a rolled piece of dried skin from his sack and tucks it under his cloak.

When the others move ahead, he glances at Zoli. “Okay, I know this looks a little disgusting, but there’s magic in Aldern’s mask, and it will help me remain unseen.” He unravels the strip of skin, revealing it to be the stalker’s mask, and ducks into a quiet alley to slip it over his head. The overlapping sections of the mask cover all but his eyes and mouth in stitched together remains of several flensed faces. If Zoli has a reaction, we can roleplay that a little, but otherwise . . .

Pulling up the hood of his cloak to conceal the hideous mask, Morythine trails his companions into the Grand Arch District, keeping alert for anything suspicious.

DM Thron, how’s the weather? Is it bright enough to affect Morythine’s light sensitivity (assuming it’s still day).

We’ll see how the others react to the silver-haired woman, as Morythine’s not with the main group. As a suggestion, perhaps Olympus should do a flyover of the courtyard to see if anything awaits us there.

Zoli, perhaps we should climb over the wall rather than try the front door (if we wait until after dark). Morythine's got the ring of jumping , he might even be able to leap over. It might be a little more subtle than the front door. DM Thron - any broken glass or anything on top of the wall?

Unable to tell, Zoli decides to at least be satisfied that they seem to have avoided complications with the city watch.

After just a few (well traveled) blocks they get to Nuthor's Nidalese Noodlehouse. Zoli holds the door for the Tzefira, allowing the slyph to pick a table. As the halfling walks to it she leans over to look at a plate of the squid ink noodles they're famous for. "I must warn you, I've only heard stories, never tried this stuff myself. Sandpoint's way too small to find a restaurant like this, but I grew up in the theater there and I remember some traveling actors who raved about this stuff. I guess they first tried it on a dare but they claim they fell in love with it. I figured why not, right?"

Looking left and right to see if anyone seems to be listening, Zoli says, "Anyway, you said you want to learn about the Sihedron. Why? And what do you want to know?"

Thron, apologies, I did a bit of searching the archives to differentiate what Zoli knows (about the runelords, the seven virtues/sins, and the sihedron) from my player knowledge...without much luck. Any quick guidance (or links to what I missed)? Thanks!

After Riley speaks

Zoli does her best to not look surprised or alarmed when Riley tells this odd lurker outside Aldren's townhouse that we're on the trail of Aldren's allies or patrons. Well, that gets right to the point! Time to act naturally and watch her face, to see if we just blew our cover...and hopefully learn a bit more about her. Is she one of Aldren's old cohort? "I don't know any historical significance of that rune, but the killers have been using that symbol for some reason. I personally witnessed them carve it into a man's chest. Zoli managed to capture some paperwork of theirs, and that symbol is rather prominently displayed on it."

As their words sets in, her lips curl into a smile and a throaty laugh escapes her throat, her hair seems to dance around in amusement due to a breeze that seemed to come from nowhere, the door to the establishment still closed.

"Forgive me," she says as she pulls herself together again, the winds seeming to calm, but the amused smile remains on her face as she speaks. "Although it is a serious issue, it seems we are interested in the same thing for the same reasons. I was hired by the Lord Mayor to investigte the murders, following leads given to me by Justice Ironbriar. I was brought in, specifically, to look into the symbol, a Sihedron rune, being carved into the victims. There was a rumor that someone from Sandpoint was knowledgeable in such things, and I was hoping that the Lord Foxglove might be able to direct me to them. It seems he is absent however. Perhaps we can pool our resources to find the information and ultimately the culprit behind these murders."

"I must have reacted poorly to your, shall we say, shady demeanor, particularly when the guards were nearby. Were you hoping to find Lord Foxglove as well?"

"He in on it, yo," Eugeni informs her. He leans in close to Tzefira. "He was an undead serial killer, so we put him down." He leans back and returns to his watch. He smiles, but it doesn't reach his cold eyes. "I'm glad it seems we'll be working together, but don't make me regret telling you that."

I'll throw a take 10 on intimidate for a 22 to represent how serious Eugeni is about him being upset should Tzefira prove false.

"It occurs to me," Riley says into the uneasy silence that follows Eugeni, "that if you have official sanction to investigate, and the next clue points to Foxglove's house, that we could explore the place without running afoul of the guard. If you would be so kind as to allow us to accompany you in your investigation." Riley gives Tzefira a smile he hoped was helpful.

Zoli breathes an audible sigh of relief as Tzefira explains her intentions. In a hushed voice she explains, "Oh! You'll have to forgive us, but--as Eugeni says--Aldren was one of these murderers. The only one we knew about, until yesterday. We came here to learn more about him and those he served. Seeing someone stalking outside his townhouse looked suspiciously like a spy to me."

She unfolds the letter they found and passes it to the slyph so that she can read it. While Tzefira reads, Zoli slurps up some noodles.

"Anyway, the Sihedron is a fascinating symbol with an ancient history. It harkens back to the Seven Virtues of Rule--wealth, fertility, honest pride, abundance, eager striving, righteous anger, and rest--which the Thassilonian Emperor Xin encouraged. Sadly, his empire fell to corruption under those who were called runelords, and the seven virtues corrupted into seven vices: greed, lust, pride, gluttony, envy, wrath, and sloth.

"Unlike what Eugeni says, not all of old Thassilon was bad, there were splendid plays and other works of art written back then--really, any appreciator of the arts owes it to herself to learn Thassilonian so that she can read the masters in their original form. He's right though that nowadays when the sihedron is used it tends to be by those of an evil bent.

"These 'Brothers' and 'the Seven' seem attached to something from Thassilonian history, or the power of rune magic and the seven vices. What exactly it is...well, I hope we discover soon.

"As far as that goes...well, Aldren foxglove was into some pretty terrible magic and was surrounded by a teeming horde of ghouls. I hope that his townhouse is unattended and we can just see if there are clues to get us closer to these Brothers...but just in case perhaps investigating it together would be prudent. After we finish these noodle--yum!"

"Hey....we dealt with Wrath with Nualia and the goblins, and that well. This seems like it might be gluttany, doesn't it? Aldern and company were crazy about eating people....what if there are going to be five more evils visited on this region!?"

The thought is disturbing to the half-orc, who has already lost so much, already known such pain.

I'm pretty convinced squid-noodles come from Tian-Xa. These Nidalese are clearly engaged in some cultural appropriation.

On the other hand, there's plenty of squid in the Arcadian Ocean, and the Nidalese are known for using squid ink to die their clothes black. So perhaps they make cuisine from them to . . .

Outside, Morythine's mind wanders . . .

Not really having much to add, Setsuna keeps quiet and watches the conversation unfold.

Tzefira reads through the letter, alook of shock and disgust warring across her face, her hair seeming to flail about in the strange breeze in concert with her emotions.

"Incredible," she says raising her eyes to the others after her second pass through the letter. "So the Lord Foxglove seems to have initially been indebted to these 'Brothers' and yet after payment and his death, they brought him back as this undead you spoke of. Do you happen to know when this transformation occurred?"

"It seems as if he was meant to be the killer that is now murdering citizens of Magnimar, off this 'list' that is mentioned in the letter. Perhaps the 'Brothers' know of his final death and have replaced him with another. Whether or not they still have someone watching his residence, I cannot say for certain, but their agents would contact him there if he 'forgot' things."

"Yes," she says to Zoli, "Your knowledge seems to parallel what I have discovered in my research, and filled in a few holes. The letter, however, seems clear. And I don't think it has to do with Wrath or Gluttony," she continued, glancing at Eugeni, "regardless of Foxgloves ghoulish ways. According to what little information is in the letter, a part of the ritual to be performed requires that the Sihedron is intended to be carved into the victim prior to their death... purportedly to do something with the 'greed in their souls', collect it, transfer it. Greed seems to be the sin in question here, for whatever reason that may be. In any case, if we do not have the list, perhaps we can extrapolate potential victims from that clue."

"Greed...gluttony...they both start with G. My seven sins theory could totally still be right.." Eugeni lamely defends himself. But not so secretly hoping he's wrong he says, "But I wouldn't be mad if it weren't."
