The how is most likely in the first six inches of each others blades while the creatures we're meant to be fighting look on in bewilderment.

A blade? How old school. How last millennium. I would expect such a deceitful group as you to have more creative methods - poison in the waterskin, green slime in the bedroll, rot grubs, suicidal insanity, forward scout to see if the next monster is friendly.
