Feral, the entire adventure path was finished. The PCs had done the 'continuing the campaign' section, with one PC using a magic ritual to siphon off the Lantern King's power to become an Archfey. After that, they got in a war with Razmiran, Numeria, AND Brevoy, all at once. They emerged victorious and, let's just face it, there was little else they could do that would have been even remotely challenging, as the final fight was an intense 3-way battle between the PCs, one of the most powerful dragons on Golarion (Mythic Great Wyrm Red Dragon/Tarn Linnorm Amalgam Creature Mythic10. The Mythic Dragons were from Legendary Games Mythic Monsters: Dragons, the Mythic Path was one of the ones from Path of Dragons, and Amalgam Creature template was from Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary, plus it used other resources from Van Graaf's Guide to Dragons and other 3PP sources), and Razmir (Who stole the Archfey's power from the PC who had himself taken it from the Lantern King). Altogether, Ramir teamed up with the PCs to kill the dragon, which had to have the scales above it's heart shattered and it's heart injured to even be vulnerable to damage. The PCs and Razmir then duked it out in an epic fight lasting with spells flying and blades flashing for SEVERAL rounds. In the end, three of the PCs were slain and the remainder returned to their kingdom, victorious, and had the whole 'golden age of the River Kingdom' thing going on. Altogether the campaign spanned over a few years, with the PCs on a slow EXP track and them taking their time exploring every nation of the River Kingdoms, annexing them as they went.

1. Those are completely workable options.

2. The combat, except in the 'boss battle' type encounters, will be well-suited to challenge average and slightly above average PCs, as far as optimization goes. The 'boss battles', on the other hand, will be handled accordingly and will require some manner of tactics. They will not be OVERLY punishing, but they WILL require PCs to think on their feet. I DO award creative thought, so if the PCs are fighting something that I think is beyond their league, I will offer assistance in the form of environmental hazards and secret weaknesses. For example, say the PCs got to a dragon or something too early and were not prepared for it. Well I would give them pieces of the environment that could be used against the dragon, such as being able to shoot down stalagtites to cause big damage to it or, if in a community somewhere, having something set up like The Hobbit Part Two where they poured the molten gold on Smaug. That sort of creative thinking and use of sound tactics!

3. Sort of both. As in most 'Kingmaker-ish hexcrawls', there is a great deal of PC freedom. While the PCs are required to do nothing, it is highly encouraged that they build their kingdom as large as possible and explore as much of the Azathyr as is possible. This way, PCs truly feel like Drow conquerers who rule the lands of eternal night and get the full roleplay experience by visiting all of the wonderful and alien locales.

4. Feral, the only thing that I am sort of leery of in this campaign is advanced technology like that found in Numeria. It is difficult to imagine such technology in the Throne of Night world unless it is EXTREMELY isolated.

Ashe, good to hear! I just like things a LITTLE more fast-paced than 1/weekday posting. Of course after knowing how lightning-quick Facebook and other such 'insta-message' campaign venues are, I prefer a little bit more brisk posting. That said, I understand that others may not be able to on some days.

Zahir, that 'simple commoner' part made me lol for a moment!

I see it just as an affiliation thing. I never understood it to mean (but hey, what do I know) that everyone who is part of a house has to have the nobility feats. DM, that isn't the case, is it?

As promised, here's my Stalker (Path of War class, not some lady boiling my kid's pet rabbit). I'll set up an alias if I'm selected. DM, you and I have talked over some of the backstory bits. I'll commit the rest of the fluff to figurative paper ASAP.

Liberty's Edge

Sounds good. I'll get something together tonight.

GM - glad to hear you are expecting a fairly good pace for this game... I am a frequent poster (retired, and home or on the phone most of the day and evening too) so I like a faster paced game.. huzzah for that... I can only hope among all the great submissions that I get picked for this one as it sounds like a LOT of fun.

Also glad to hear about your rating for the game, as I'm not into too much graphic unpleasantness or strange bedfellows... best fade to black on those scenes and let everyone's imaginations fill in the blanks.

Liberty's Edge

Who's looking for some big dumb muscle? I'm happy to write my backstory in a way that works with yours.

lol... "The sex talk AGAIN, Dad? Really?"....

You do make this remarkably tempting; going to be lurking in the gameplay thread curiously, like I have been this recruitment. Hope you don't mind a watcher or two?

Faeryl, huzzah indeed for multiple posts! For some reason though, after playing Sunset Overdrive, huzzah is now equated with crazed LARPers who use foam swords and shoddily-constructed crossbows to go do battle with zombies created by contaminated orange soda and killer robot ninjas... plus 90's punk raiders! FOR FARGARTHIA!!! :P

BlindKitsune, I do not mind someone looking in on the gameplay thread at all!

Silver Crusade

I don't think the nobility feats would fit my character very well cause he was kind of bucking off the reigns of his noble house anyway. It's less about nobility for him now and more about building power to use it to crush those that wronged him XP

You don't need to be able to detect magic or cast deeper darkness in order to crush the weak beneath your heel

Liberty's Edge

I'm working on a character now. I'm thinking a minotaur (using the asterion stat array) that was born into slavery. After a lifetime of ownership he's fully loyal to the house that owns him and even more so to the drow or drowess he's been tasked with serving. He's part guard dog, part butler, and part hulking man-cow. He'd do well paired with a caster of some sort.

Silver Crusade

Feral, my only concern for you is as to how you would be able to see, considering they only seem to have low-light vision. I am definitely not trying to get you away from using the minotaur, cause that'd be AWESOME. But it'd still be a concern

Liberty's Edge

Oh, good point.

I guess I'll go with the Kobold Press version then. That one has darkvision.

Okay, gonna throw this guy in there:

Moresh

I've tried to find the starting gold but have obviously overlooked it somewhere. What was it again?

Feral - Would love to have a bodyguard for Faeryl lol... would have to modify her background a little, and come up with a way she would have acquired your service, perhaps in a trade ?... or perhaps she procured your freedom rather than your slave contract and you now are loyal to her for other reasons than simple ownership.

Just a couple of ideas....

I haven't seen a lot caster concepts put forth (at least not arcane ones), but I'm not the only one, so you do have other options. pm me if you want to talk more about it.

Javell, 1,000 GP!

Is everyone else super happy that, supposedly, the Scarred Lands campaign setting is being re-released, possibly for Pathfinder? There is no confirmation, but a LOT of speculation, since the Scarred Lands was a pretty big thing back in 3.X.

Silver Crusade

"While it is richly detailed in over two dozen game and fiction titles, Nocturnal Media and Onyx Path Publishing have plans to reimagine the setting and system to excite a modern gaming audience as well as to thrill fans of the original game."

I've never played the setting before, but it seems interesting and I'd be up to playing it when it comes out :-)

It's like Greek Mythology, fantasy RPG-style. I own every book except for 4 out of like 30-ish of the series and I was NOT the person to get interested about many 3PP campaign settings back in 3.X, mostly sticking to the WotC-produced ones until Necromancer Games and Sword and Sorcery Studios made some great ones.

Liberty's Edge

I'm good with that Faeryl. We can go the wookie life-debt route.

Cool... When you have your character ready, and some background written, we can work on merging our tales... :)

Liberty's Edge

I've got a background worked up but I don't know if we'll work together Faeryl. GM Overseer implied he only wanted one non-drow and I just realized you're applying as a tiefling. =(

Feral, I was only looking at 1 without ANY Drow blood. As Faeryl has Drow blood, even if she is technically a Tiefling, she is considered a Drow for the purposes of the recruitment.

Liberty's Edge

Oh... Well game on then!

I'll be finishing up my app and posting within the next hour.

Sounds good.

I'm about to log in Hearthstone and play for a while, so I will be back on later today!

Liberty's Edge

Background:
After decades of failed business ventures and fending off rivals, Azniriss, matriarch of the lesser House Teikari, found herself destitute and with few options. In one last desperate gambit to reclaim her family's lost glory she poured the bulk of the wealth left to her into paying House Sathys's exorbitant stud fee to breed their prize minotaur gladiator Gorn Spiritskin with one of her brood whores. Her plan was simple: The beasts grew to adulthood in a handful of years (the blink of an eye to the long-lived dark elves). With the champion's blood pumping through his veins and a little 'luck', he would rise through the ranks and in doing so allow House Teikari the opportunities they needed to recoup the wealth and prestige that had been lost to them. Things started well enough; the whore survived the breeding and conceived. She did not survive the calf's birth but such was the cost of doing business.

Unfortunately for Azniriss the rest of her plan was foiled when her creditors came early and claimed her prize calf as part of the indemnity for Teikari's unpaid debts. Unaware of the minotaur babe's pedigree he was sold to House Vakazar for a handful of coin - a fraction of what Azniriss had paid to have him conceived. He was raised by one of the house's beastmasters for manual labor, a rearing focused on cruelty and utterly devoid of even the smallest kindness. As soon as he could walk, Ruul was made to dig, haul, and lift. When his horns came in he was taught to fight and kill for the entertainment of the House's children, first animals and then other slaves. With his prodigious strength, even at a young age, killing was easy for him.

A few years later things changed. During a celebration Ruul was brought inside (a rare treat!) and made to fight for the entertainment of the guests. He won the bout handily, breaking the neck of the half-starved orc he'd be matched against, but in the aftermath there was some kind of exchange between a beautiful dark elf girl and an older drow woman - someone he understood to be his master's master. Ruul was too young and simple to understand the drow politics being worked around him but he did understand that the unknown girl had earned a boon from the drow matron. She pointed at him meaningfully and the next thing he knew the beastmaster was affixing a chain to the iron collar around his furry neck and handing the other end of the chain to the unknown girl. He was told that her name was Faeryl and that she was his master now.

Fearful of the terrible suffering she'd no doubt visit on him if he disobeyed, Ruul followed in sullen silence but to his surprise she didn't flay him or burn him with white-hot brands as his former masters were so quick to do. She fed him, unlocked his collar and asked him his name. The calf stared in wide-eyed wonder and answered. "R-Ruul."

Faced with something approaching kindness for the first time in his sad short life, Ruul immediately and irrevocably imprinted on Faeryl, worshiping her with a mix of romanticism and blind obedience. In the next few years he swelled into a teenage bull minotaur many times her size and more than capable of protecting her from the more common and mundane threats the city had to offer. Dutifully and without hesitation, Ruul carried out these responsibilities be them carrying her things, issuing threats, or breaking necks.

There's a few plot hooks in there if you're interesting backstory-related things. Azniriss Teikari could come looking to reclaim her investment or Ruul could meet/fight/ally with his gladiator father for example.

Appearance:
7'2" 450lbs

Ruul is a young bull minotaur with a dark hide that contrasts sharply with his ivory-colored horns. His muscular hulking frame has plenty of growing to do but he still towers over even the tallest drow and is nearly as wide. Despite his tremendous bulk, he moves with the kind of muscular grace one often sees in big apex predators. His long horns angle forward at their tips and are their topped with dark metal.

Besides a handful of hides to protect his modesty Ruul's belongings are limited to a leather harness (chosen by his mistress to accentuate his fearsome physique), enchanted rune-etched hide bracers, a thick belt loaded with assorted pouches, and a sheathed bone-handled dagger.

I took some liberties with reskinning a few things to fit the setting and guessed at which drow houses would work for his story. I'm good with changing specifics if it works for the campaign. I'm a bit at a loss for campaign traits that would fit. I suppose I could always take Improved Darkvision. None of the ability score packages fit super well either but I'm going with Cruel Slaver currently. Maybe I'll call it Cruelly Enslaved. =P

I asked because everyone is "I'm house this, I'm house that" which sounds like nobility talk to this simple commoner.

See, that was a little how I appear to me too.

But!

One can certainly be affiliated with a house without being nobility. Every house is sure to have retainers, servants and craftfolks in their employ - not to mention people just living in their lands/domains.

Alrighty! This looks interesting, and this is simply a 3am dot.
I am thinking Drow Psion (nomad) with the speed of thought feat (+10 ms), a focus on mobility and stealth, and a strong linguistics skill.
In a nutshell, he is a courier, running from one settlement to another, one ruling house to another shady brothel. While other forms of communication are possible, a physical courier is still considered one of the most secretive and reliable.
Still, rarely is ones death so desired and protected at the same time, as one will pay handsomely to protect his secrets and even more so to learn of another's...

I like your background, Ruul/Feral, and will modify my own to mesh. I didn't see an alignment listed but am curious. And what you choose might help me make another choice on my character... I could see you being straight N, as Ruul doesn't seem to have any evil in him in his history or his stated nature... but I could be wrong.

That and Ravenloft were my two favorite 3.X settings I really enjoyed that world, didnt get to play in it enough and some of the later stuff got a little crazy but it was great

Ravenloft is one of my top settings as well, back to 2nd edition. Stupid paladins going mad and what not. I also love me some Dragonlance. Its probably my favorite setting.

This is Redblade, I took the liberty of making an alias for my Stalker (if I don't get picked, well I can use it for *something*).

He's true neutral but I could see him leaning toward NE in a 'I'll do whatever I have to in order to survive' sort of way.

true neutral sounds fine thanks.

If we're reminiscing about favorite settings, then I cannot help but put in a word for Birthright (and the Player's/GM's Option type stuff from the same period), which then heavily influenced both the Arcanis setting, as well as both settings for the Alternity ruleset.

A rapid pace, several posts a day, would be great. It is especially critical in a pbp to get that momentum going, and especially during combat.

Regarding common background stories, I currently have Taecuss as a commoner, though tied to a noble house. I can certainly adjust the story to be any of the noble houses, especially if it would help create more cohesiveness if my character is selected.

I missed Scarred Lands; my gaming group was on an extended GURPS kick when it was big. But I've heard cool things about it and would love to see it for Pathfinder.

There is only one real campaign setting - Greyhawk. The original with the Scarlet Brotherhood, Iuz, and all the other fun little things from the twisted mind of Gary Gygax.

Oh the modules - Tomb of Horrors, Temple of Elemental Evil, Slave Lords, what more can one say.

I am leaving this one to you. I am afraid I won't be able to keep up the posting requirements.

I will agree, Ravenloft and Greyhawk were amazing settings, although 3.X Greyhawk was a bit... underwhelming compared to the earlier ones that Gygax worked on. I love Zagyg! Actually thought up an entire megadungeon based on him and not the one under Castle Greyhawk either! Of course, Iggwilv/Tasha was my girl back in the day! One of the best villains ever, in my opinion. I also used to love Masque of the Red Death, which was something that I toyed around with the notion of doing on the boards. Overall, I figure most people wouldn't be interested, given how little support the setting has gotten over the years, apart from the fine folks at the Fraternity of Shadows. Planescape was a favorite of mine too, because it's was all barmy and planar Common made some conversations reminiscent of a British sitcom, with 'binking some cutter's jink' being an actual common phrase! I never really played Birthright and only rarely played Dragonlance, for whatever reasons.

Megabeus, sorry to see you go man!

Well, there was a LOT Of support for Greyhawk when the Living City campaign shut down because that was the birth of Living Greyhawk..... which may have lost some of the high level/high powered stuff, but was still a LOT of fun. I played inthe LG campaign from it's launch date until they shut it down... it was grand fun!

Living Greyhawk, Living Arcanis, Living Verge, they were all fun!

PFS is fun, and their big Interactives are OK, but for real interactives Living Arcanis was phenomenal, and for battle Interactives, the local triad for Geoff did an amazing job in Living Greyhawk.

There was? I don't really remember 3.X Greyhawk a lot except for the fact that they cut out a lot of material that I loved quite a bit and made changes that made me kind of nerdrage for a bit. Not as bad, however, as the absolute ridiculous 'timeline bombs' in Faerun and such in D&D 4.0 which was something that, along with the system, made me lose faith in WotC in every way except for Magic the Gathering. Of course, it could be because I'm an old-school TTRPGer, so that may be partially to blame for me being a curmudgeon about it.

I've never even heard of Arcanis or Verge, oddly enough! What were these?

Old School Greyhawk was also where I cut my teeth back in the halcyon days of gaming :) that and The Known World/Mystara of D&D... Fort Doom and the Isle of Dread - ah man.

Agree JAF0 - Living Greyhawk really benefitted from all the online support and really opened up so much options and opportunity. Was indeed fun setting...

I'm running my own vanity pbp on the boards - a re-imagining of my favourite TSR UK modules - The Sentinel and The Gauntlet (once set in the Hold of The Sea Princes - now Iobaria...)

Original Ravenloft still sits as one of my all time favourite modules that spawned a setting. Afterward even mists had my players jumping lol.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

local triad for Nyrond did a great job too... my favorite interactive was near the end of the campaign when we were defending Rel Mord from a massive demon attack. My character blew up an entire dock covered in demons (with an aboleth swimming underneath) by dropping a portable hole into a handy haversack, getting rid of the demons (as well as sending the entire party etherial)... then she banished the party back to the prime material plane with a scroll stolen from the dead cleric. (the result of which ended up in another module - the bit of dock floating in the etherial plane)... Too much fun... I loved LG...

(that was SO hard to do by the way - I cried over that - you don't know how hard it was to actually GET that portable hole in the first place, lol)

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

Arcanis was another great world! A phenomenal one really. The mighty Coryani empire was in decline. Very Roman. With breakaway provinces, legions, and loads of political intrigue.

The Verge was a location in the Star*Drive universe for Alternity. That campaign was short lived, as TSR cancelled Alternity long before it should have.

Between family and work travel, I was able to play some Nyrond modules, good stuff there.

And the open Region slots at GenCon were great for playing games from other Regions.

GM, so do we need to expend our full starting gold on trinkets and such now, or once you select a group, will there be time to plan the gear needs?
