Long have you lingered in this frontier outpost, forsaken and forgotten. You have, at last, been summoned before the Baroness, Lady Satha of Vothys, and immediately can tell that it is a trap, having seen her summon countless others to her throne room that have never returned. But would you dare disobey her summons? Rumors have been swirling around the outpost for weeks now that the Svifneblin town of Fasturvault has fallen under the Baroness' envious eyes, given the number of inquiries sent forth and forward scouts that have been coming and going for months. So maybe she has legitimate cause for calling you after all... maybe you have been chosen for the task of annexing the Svirfneblin city. You hope so at least, so you can get away from the boring backwater outpost that is Vothys.

And so you choose to put your head into the figurative noose and make your way to the throne room. You wonder along the way, as you pass through halls lit by rocks ensconsed in the glossy black stone walls that shed a crimson light, if she does send you on such a task, will the only thing that greets you upon your return be a sharp blade to the back or a poisoned meal? Given her past record of discarding tools shortly after using them, you are certain of that.

Regardless, you decide to go hear her out, for to refuse means certain death.

As you walk among the glossy black stone hallways of Vothys, you encounter some of your compatriots, or at least those that seem the least likely to knife you in the back for petty gains.

Roleplay between PCs or head straight to the throne room?

"Why hello there... You lot look as out of place here as a cat in a kennel. And as skittish. Were you summoned to see the Baroness? Such a summons might be perfectly marvelous... or a death warrant. For your sakes, I hope it's the former."

She lofts a brow at the sight of the bugbear, as such a creature is not high on the list she'd expect to see called to see the Baroness. She sighs softly, missing Ruul, her minotaur bodyguard.

To Hurkkagg she passes a little smile, wondering if he'd make a good replacement for Ruul, if he's not already claimed. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. So you're not the usual sort I'd expect to see on his way to an audience with the Baroness. Are you someone's bodyguard, or perhaps companion... or are you a free agent?"

She looks at the others present to see if any of them speak up to claim the bugbear.

"I'm Faeryl... " she says, ignoring the pun-like possibilities in the homophone of her name. She is an almost impishly beautiful female, with closely cropped ivory hair, obviously self-cut, and not well done. Her eyes are a deep crimson color, glowing in the lights along the hall. The clothing she wears is obviously new, but rather non-descript, dark brown leather pants and vest over a deep purple silk shirt... Occasionally, her tail twitches, and makes its presence known, a display of her half-breed birthright.

Hurkkagg eyes the small female as she approaches him. He says nothing but his blue tinged nose wrinkles and snorts lightly as he takes in her scent.

Not born of the deep this one. Not dokk-olv, but dokk-olv blooded...

The giant goblinoid leans forward so his slave brand on his ear is visible. He then answers in a raspy low voice:

"Hurkkagg no out of place. In his place."

A throaty basso reminiscent of a rockfall rumbles up from his chest as long fingernails from a gracefully tapering hand lightly scratch under his chin. Whether it is a growl or a purr is hard to distinguish.

Standing just ahead and to the side of the towering bugbear, a dark elf reaches up to run her fingernails through the fur under the chin of the massive gobloinoid. Herself well over six feet, the willowy female is nearly of a height with her erstwhile companion in her ridiculously long thigh high leather stilettos. Sinuously leaning into his body, she looks down at the diminutive elf-like female through the thick lashes of her half closed eyelids. Her sensuous lips forming a moue, she lets slip the slightest tut of disapproval. "Oh, are you wandering out and about alone? Do you need a mistress to keep you safe?"

Quirking a perfect eyebrow at the display of her unnatural heritage, she adds, "Such... exotic features as yours might fetch a higher price from some males with more... rarefied tastes. Some females for that matter. Of course you can control it, can you not?"

To Akor, she lofts a curious brow, then trills with laughter. "Oh, trust me, my 'exotic features' have fetched much higher prices than most could even afford.... from males... and females... and everything in between." She sighs softly as she recalls her many paramours and companions, now mostly lost to a life left behind. "Control?" She quirks up the corners of her mouth in a little smile, but in truth she's curious as to what the Drowess refers to.

A short elf emerges from the shadows, draped in a midnight velvet cloak over supple and finely worked black leather armor. A very large intricately carved bow is slung over one shoulder, a long, curved single-edged sword sheated over the other. A quiver of black fletched arrows hangs at his left hip, flanked by a leather belt pouch. Soft knee-high boots dampen his steps and if he hadn't spoken, you doubt you would've noticed him standing there. "Tazennin is my name. I admit my knowledge of the baroness is sparse, what do we know of her?"

He scans the others summoned to the throne room, paying particular attention to the hulking bugbear, and, more importantly, the large bow he carried. "That is quite a weapon you have there. Might I ask where you acquired it? I am interested in such things." His soft voice creeps out from under his black cowl like a greasy layer of oil polluting a pool's surface.

The statuesque drow puts on a sympathetic frown as she replies to the aberrant drow. "So that's a 'no'. Too bad. You could have been quite popular. Still I'm sure I can fetch a good price for it if you ever find that you've grown tired of it giving you away."

With a shrug to the only other female and a come hither finger to the bugbear, she walks on toward the baroness' audience chamber.

Hah. To contextualise - this is a long running gag with Drayen and myself where if we botted each other's characters - such as above then we changed the gender (historically was to female) - glad to see Drayen is keeping the tradition going lol. And no Hurkkagg will remain a male ;)

Hurkkagg follows his mistresses gesture and pads in her wake. As he passes Kolaiah the bugbear eyes the oracle briefly;

Little male has tongue like sharp knife.

The brute then grumbles an answer to the weapon clad Tazennin;

"Took bow from big orkk. Took its tongue too."

Hurkkagg's claws fidget momentarily with burgee of dried tongues that hang round his neck.

Tazennin sighs inwardly to himself, but takes care in ensuring his demeanor does not betray his emotions, Another bunch of dark elves too caught up in The Game to be of any use. All the shady dealings and backroom machinations in the underworld won't save you from an arrow through the heart...

He considers Faeryl, not hiding the fact that he was looking her up and down with a hungry eye, A lady of the night, eh? I wonder how much she charges?

He chuckles, an odd sound - something like ancient parchment crumbling - at Kolaiah's riff on the bugbear, At least this one shows promise to be somewhat interesting.

To Hurkkagg, "Ah, how unfortunate for him. I took mine from a surface elf," He gestures to his own bow, resplendent with it's hideous carvings, his own work, of course, "before piercing her heart with her own dagger. A pity, that." He says with a tilt to his head and a slight smile, his voice still raspy and apt to make one's skin crawl. His eyes slide down to the necklace of tongues, Lovely accouterments.

"Let's be on with it, then." He says as he slinks after Akor into the chamber room, eyes constantly scanning their immediate surroundings, taking in every detail and assessing potential threats. His right hand constantly opened and closed, as if he were searching for an excuse to draw his bowstring taught and loose an arrow at the first sign of danger.

The games of woman I'm so glad there are no woman with any true authority in the order

Walking up to Kolaiah quietly "Do not trouble yourself with the ways of the female drow, The Prince always watches out for his own."

Then somberly continuing his way to the Barroness.

As you approach the throne room, two Drow bodyguards, dressed in ornate armor and wielding a tower shield etched with runes in one hand with a wickedly barbed spear in the other, eye you suspiciously, as if waiting on you to make a false move. One of them turns and pushes open the large black doors, motioning for you to go through.

You walk through the doors and take in the sight before you. This large and imposing chamber is composed of black stone walls as barbed and baroque as the exterior of the tower. The ceiling rises to a high vault, twenty feet above the tiled floor wherein stand almost a dozen fully armored Drow warrior.. The room is ringed by high friezes adorned with imagery of the Drow standing victorious over a wide variety of enemies: Elf, Duergar, Deep Gnome, Aboleth and others. Against the western wall is a throne made of jet and crimson stone, adorned with demonic iconography. Above the throne is a stylized image of a great drow metropolis and a carving that reads “Mighty Taaryssia, forever triumphant”.

Sitting upon the throne is Lady Satha, reclining upon the throne like the queen she imagines herself to be. While ravishingly beautiful, possessing all the sinful curves and elegant features of the typical Drow noble, she only wears a relatively modest (By Drow standards at least, something that is likely quite scandalous to other cultures) silver dress and only has a few pieces of tasteful jewelry done in black mithril, etched with silver and encrusted with rubies. It is obvious that she no longer has complete access to her family's coffers, even if she is likely wealthier than every person in Vothys combined.

She converses with the scantily clad servant at her side, who is wearing little more than a simple spidersilk shift, before turning to speak to you in a seductive, yet thoroughly mocking, tone, “Ah, so you have finally arrived, my subjects! I have an errand for you which, I trust, should be well within your capable hands. Let me be blunt: the Deep Gnome quarrytown of Fasturvalt has two things I desire – stone and slaves, both in ample supply. You will seize them for me. I have assembled an army of a hundred fine warriors, which I put them under your command. That should be more than enough soldiers to brush aside their pitiful defenses. Even better, my spies have confirmed that their ruler, Lord Geirni, is a simpleton who believes he can placate us with treaties and supplications. To say that the man is a moron is to do a disservice to the word, because he has all the political savvy of lump of stone, only half the subtlety, and once sold a royal title to a commoner for a box of surface sweets! How ridiculous is that?."

She motions to her servant, who nods and picks up a small box made out of some dark fungal planks with a bit of lacquer on them, who then steps forward to you all and opens the box, revealing three small, intricately cut gemstones that glow like fire, as well as six flasks of some green vicscous substance. “My generosity at gifting such knowledge and tools for use in this task does not cease there, however. I have a few gifts for you. These jewels Zohjii are giving you have the power to summon forth small beings of elemental fire for about a minute, or so I’m told by our alchemist, such matters are a tedious bore to me. You can either shatter them and command the elementals directly or set them as traps. Amusing little toys to be sure. You can use them to burn the burn the Svirfneblin armory and it should make it easier to deal with them, since their weapons and armor would be quite useless if burnt and melted into slag or, if things go skyward (Drow way of saying 'things go to s***'), have a few walking fountains of flame to help incinerate the little insects. The potions I had placed in the box will keep you in good health, for I would be positively mortified if something happened to your lovely persons. See how much I care for you, my honored subjects?” she finishes with a smirk.

Lady Satha leans to the right, resting her elbow on the throne and her chin open her closed hand, "So, do any of you have any questions before you embark on this great quest for your Baroness and for Taarysia? Make it quick, because I have a few 'distractions' waiting for me in my private quarters that I am eager to get to."

Taz considers her words carefully, weighing the pros and cons. Uninterested in talk of tactics and numbers, Tazennin gets right to the point that has him most intrigued, the reward, of course, "Is there a reward involved in all this?" he says slyly, "Perhaps if we do this for you and everything goes to your liking, I can can forgo my portion of the gold and be counted among the ranks of your spies? Surely, you could use a man of my exceptional... talents." He purrs that last bit, but it comes out as more of a sickly sweet croon.

The brutes eyes flit to peer to the ceiling friezes taking in the races conquered by the dokk olv. His eyes narrow accordingly;

Hrrr. No bugge beran...

Hurkkagg exposes a thick tooth in a semi-smile to himself, before focussing on the Lady Satha's speech.

At the news they would be enslaving the accursed deep-gnomiz, the big goblinoids ears twitch in excitement and he smiles again...

Keeping Hurkkagg quiet - figure a slave speaking in any shape/form whilst before drow nobility would mean being fed to the spider pit... or some such fate...

Faeryl blinks in surprise at the 'orders' surely the Baroness has better things for ME to do... I've done her some wrong I don't know about? Or perhaps wronged someone she favors? What was it? Perhaps it can be smoothed over? Maybe it was that young drow sorceror who I refused an appointment with ... it wasn't so much as a refusal and more of a postponement... still he was angry... was he one of hers? Oh what did I DO? black mithril?

Kolaiah waits to see if any of the assemblage responds, when none do, he pipes up, "excuse me mistress, if I may ask two simple questions? First, we seem a fairly exotic lot of your subjects, drawn from a broad cross section. Why us, if you please? And then, for my second question, an expedition such as this, if I may suggest, should not be lead like some committee of drunk humans voting on whose property to tax. It should have a leader. Who is to be appointed to that role?"

If you do exceptionally well, I might even give you your very own Svirfneblin slave to change your chamberpot!" She lets out a light chuckle, a smile drawn across her lips like a wicked dagger.

Lady Satha straightens up at Kolaiah's questions, "Ah, so at least one of you has some manners after all. It is most pleasing to see someone who knows their place!"
She motions to the assembled group, pointing with a delicately manicured hand unused to manual labor, "Why you all, you ask? Because some of you have proven yourselves a bit more useful than most of my subjects, apart from my royal guard of course, and some of you have yet to prove how useful you are to me. So it is simply me assigning a few capable individuals to the task in the hopes that it be accomplished and sending a few 'extras' so that their value to their Baroness can be determined."
She cocks her head to the side when looking at Kolaiah, seeming to take a moment to think something over, "As for who is the leader, why not yourself? You seem to have a good head on your shoulders, you know your position here, and you seem to be well-suited to the task of leading this 'expedition', since you took the initiative to ask such a question. I will, however, be sending my majordomo, Galius Malathorn, as your advisor. You will find he is well-suited to the task. After we finish up here, go fetch him from his chambers."

Kolaiah is clearly taken aback by the appointment. "Mistress, I am honored at the trust you have reposed in me, and rest assured that we shall carry out your wishes in a most expeditious fashion." He gives a sweeping low bow to the baroness.

"If it is not too much trouble then, I believe I might have several more questions for you. Of most importance is the level of success you will attribute to varying percentages of mortality amongst your soon to be conquered subjects. Would a fifty percent survival rate be acceptable? What is an acceptable survival rate among the troops you are placing under my command? How soon do you wish for this endeavor to be concluded? Is a week too soon? A month too long? Are matters of discipline for the entire expedition in my hands to adjudicate?"

He pauses for a moment, looks at Galius, and continues, "possibly my other questions are more appropriate to your majordomo, but I do have concerns about supplies, capabilities of the troops, hazards along the way, any particular strengths or weaknesses the svirfneblin might have, etc."

At the short darkly clad male's latest word vomit, Akor rolls her eyes and looks to the blank space to which he is addressing his last statement.

Does he actually think her majordomo is standing there? She just said that we would need to collect him from his chambers... That's one nail won't be sticking up too much longer...

Not a tear will be shed when your lifeblood pools around your throne as your heart ceases to beat. Of that, I am quite certain. Once again, his hand itched for the release of his bowstring. He smiled to himself as he entertained thoughts of spitting her heart on one of his arrows and feeding that to the kobold slaves.

The Baroness responds to Tazennin, "That is better, my pet, much better! It feels good to be in one's proper place, does it not?"

Lady Satha purrs out, "Oh, but of course every subject is valuable to me in some form or fashion. Some are valuable in how expendable they are. I do not particularly care how many must be sacrificed to take the city if need be, although I would PREFER casualties to be minimized. More living subjects means more tribute sent up the chain of command, no? As for how long it takes, just get it done as soon as possible, as efficiently as possible. I hope this will not be an issue?"
Upon hearing the part about discipline, she smirks, "Why yes, of course! I rather doubt it will be necessary, but keep the lash at hand in case some need to be brought to heel. If someone proves too problematic, kill them to save us all some time."
Upon hearing Kolaiah talking to her servant, who is not Galius, her face twists into a scowl, "Perhaps I overestimated your abilities. I TOLD you to FETCH Gallius after we finish here. Does that not imply that he is NOT here in this room? Or were you even listening?"

Did you say that the say that the Deep G nomes I did that on purpose to pronounce them G Nomes are willing to treat and parlay with us?
If so why do we not use this idiot to our advantage, send us as Emisaries to talk to these fools and we can bring them "gifts" that we can destroy their leaders and there establishment with.
While we can playcate them with one hand our other hand slits there stupid little throats.

Hurkkagg innately senses the impatience in his Mistress and subtly shuffles back a step.

His ears swivel and perk up at the mention of sowing the seeds of discord and death amongst the diep gnomiz...

Akor finds herself idly caressing the coiled whip at her hip as the baroness mentions using the lash. Hmmm, there's always a need for judicious use of the lash. This sounds more and more fun. Keep teasing me you lascivious minx. A small smile comes across her face as she seductively looks to her liege lady through the lashes of her half-lidded eyes.

Not wanting to attract the Lady's attention just now, Faeryl stays quiet, watching the others carefully... Who really wants to be in charge? And is the person who WANTS it, really the one who should have it? She ponders these things as the others fidget or stand still and Xodar speaks up...She lofts a brow as the monk speaks.. Wasn't expecting him to be the one to open his mouth first, but I suppose it could be worse.

Feh. These dokk-alfar love to hear their own voices! Silent as the knife Hurkkagg will stay...

The hairy goblin-brute clenches his bear-trap of a jaw as he successfully stifles a yawn.

Mistress woke Hurkkagg for this?

Taz's white eyes narrow dangerously as he considers the hooded volunteer from the shadows. The Order of the Jet Star? Of what madness does this one speak?

Sense motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

His gaze takes in the others as they maintain their silence as well. He can't help but chuckle to himself, which sounds more like a sickly cough than any form of laughter you've heard, A talkative bunch. At least my head will not ache with their constant yammering on the roads ahead.

"Before we commit to this Order of the Jet Star, perhaps we should know something about it... Otherwise, perhaps you can just lead without ascribing any of our deeds to anyone or anything besides ourselves," Faeryl purrs softly.

The Jet Star we are the order in a world of chaos. We are the arbiters, judges and mediators, for the drow.
Some of you might have a hard time getting in line with the order but Im sure the rest of us will keep you in line and be able to make sure things go smoothly.

"While I'm not fond of overwhelming chaos, neither am i a big fan of too much order... can't we just be ourselves... each as we are.. and keep organizations like your Order out of it? I think that would be best..."

As his mistress exits, Hurkkagg watches for any potential threat following her.

Satisfied nothing is forthcoming, the hairy brute reverently retreats - baleful eyes looking to the floor as he does...

Everyone check out discussion! I would like to get a synopsis of who is still up for playing. Tazennin sent a PM during my absence from the messageboards stating that he was dropping due to some real life issues, something which I can totally sympathize with.
