Did you want to RP this out or say that we establish the marching order in this meeting and do a "fade to black" thing for the conversation itself? I've good either way

"True, but then they don't tend to visit their grandfather's sins upon the descendants, either..."

The smile at the end is an attempt to take the sting out of the words, but the druid has limited time for what he sees as dwarven stupidity on this point. Kalderin and Nurin are both good as far as he is concerned.

Nurin grunts at Grimdahl's reference. It's true the weight of his father's burden was inflicted on him for his whole life. His quest to study magic, his need to be here. His father had been a coward. But his father was a good man too. Warm and caring. Ran the damn best inn in Five Kingdoms. Dwarves snickered behind his back, but they damn well ate his stew and drank the ale he served. It was a life to be proud of...if you weren't a Jarnthane."

"Bali's right though, even if a bit far-sighted. If we do find this passage and make it in. We'll have to figure out what to do. Hold it, hoping for allies and reinforcements? I think we might just be the newest corpses in Dammerhall. Perhaps a foray in and back out, half reconnaissance and half testing the defenses. Then we could come back with proof and an army." He shrugs. "That is, if we find it at all. And don't die before then."

I understand yer sentiment brother, but ye must understand that what is done is done, and the truth canno' be erased. But also understand that most dwarves aren't blockheaded enough to not let a dwarf's actions speak for themselves. I'll not say that I won't trust our companions with dishonor in their family, but I won't trust them blindly either. That they are here speaks volumes to their intentions, and I respect that more than ye know. I will reserve my judgement, and trust, fer their actions, which we are all about to witness.

Pravic, being excused, does his best to contain his excitement as he hurries back to the forge he was working at before the meeting. The piece he had been working on, a wagon hub, was already hopelessly mangled, especially since it had sat in the coals the entire time he was gone. He quickly tossed it into the scrap pile to be re-melted later, and poured another mold. It would be several hours at least before he met back up with his new companions, and he needed some time to speak with Torag before he left.

Craft(Metal Arms and Armor, Untrained): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17

His piece finished, he admires some of the better work he has ever done. It doesn't compare to anything the master smiths could do on their worst day, but it elicited a feeling of pride and good omen for the journey he was about to embark on, for the honor of his god, and the good of his people.

He placed the small , newly created throwing hammer with the holy symbol of Torag emblazoned on it above his cot. A reminder for when he returned of where he began. Donning his armor, gathering his weapons and all of his gear, he made his way to the location he was to meet his companions, white-knuckling his holy symbol the whole way in barely contained excitement.

I had not intended to actually do a meeting, but a quick summary could suffice.

Aye, Reginald. Let us discuss the inhabitants of the long tunnels and see what we may learn from each other...

After the discussion, Bali leaves to prepare for the randevous.

Grimdahl:
You know that large subterranean pack lizards are often used as beasts of burden in the Underdark. Finding any on the surface would be nearly impossible though.

Doled raises his voice before the dwarves can take their leave. "Make no mistake, friends. Our race stands upon the edge of an axe. Every passing year sees fewer and fewer dwarves. I fear that if you fail in this, dwarfkind will eventually be lost to the passage of time, with nothing but our sagas to remember us by. You are our last, greatest hope. Perhaps we have not sung our last song of glory..."

Okay. That should wrap up this scene. Friday and Saturday are going to be difficult days to post during, as I'll be representing at the Michigan Summer Beer Festival. My posting should resume on Sunday, but I'll see if I can't sneak something in Friday or Saturday night.

If you're feeling frisky, I strongly encourage you to role-play amongst yourselves as you gather supplies/make preparations/discuss the dangers of the journey. Learn about each others characters!

Reginald is the last to leave. He bids his host and friend a short farewell then heads to the modified warehouse that serves as the hib of House T'jener. Ever since the Doom, no T'jener has called a place home.
He enters and orders a wagon and two work oxen readied on the way to his desk. The desk itself is almost as old as he is. It was crafted by his father from local bedrock just after the Doom and has stood with Reginald through his entire life. Its surface is worn perfectly smooth from centuries of use, and Refinald must leave it behind.

He spends a good bit of time just standing and getting lost in the river of memories, good and bad, that the desk holds. Eventually, his right hand man, Eugin T'jener, a cousin on his mother's side, quietly enters his office and reports that the wagon is ready.

In a voice barely above a whisper Reginald informs Eugin that he must leave for a time. The younger dwarf immidiately starts the usual questions, but Reginald cuts him off. I cannot say, son. Know that it is to the benefit of us all that I go. Besides, with all my children gone or unworthy, the task of the preservation of the Tarnhammers is yours.

He then gives his last set of orders. Basic provisions for a month, several sets of basic underground survival gear, several cases of canned fruits, pickled vegetables, dried varieties of the same, and a crate of honey jars. Once these hints are loaded he sets out, letting the oxen follow the well-worn trails whenever he didn't need to guide them.

T'jener:
Grimdahl will suggest to T'jener that they take oxen and look to exchange/trade them for pack lizards at the earliest opportunity. Maybe they can then dine on roast beef. He won't mention that last bit to the elder.

Grimdahl knows a bank where the wild thyme blows. Finding a shady spot to sit, he spends the rest of the day in silence, watching the progress of the sun across the sky; watching the succession of animals, large and tiny, that scurry through the clearing; watching as the sky turns from blue, to orange/yellow as the sun sets; and watches as the day turns to gloaming, the half-light of dusk.

His thoughts are a mystery, even to himself. Perhaps especially to himself.

Checking that he has enough mistletoe and holly to last him for the next few months, he stands up with a slight grunt: "So." Dismissing his thoughts, he focusses on the task ahead. Time to meet with the others.

Kalderin quietly follows the old dwarf, not saying a word and trying to stay out of the way as much as possible. He looks very uncomfortable as the wagon is loaded.

Are you sure your family can afford to give us all of this? I'd rather not leave with a debt, but I didn't bring enough to cover even a small amount. He rests his hand on his belt. After a moment he takes off a small belt pouch and hands it to Eugin. Don't say no. I insist. We can't put this kind of burden on your House alone. And besides, it's next to nothing compared to your expense. He hands the other dwarf 30gp.

As the oxen and wagon roll out, Where we are going it will be dangerous. I only hope we can keep these beasts calm when we face what's down there. I'm not sure this is a good idea to travel with so much, but I suppose we'll just have to do what we can.

Nurin walks back to the inn he had rented, still in disbelief that he of all people was called to undertake such a task. Doled said 'some of the finest of our race'. Did he really mean it? Maybe he meant 'Some of you are the finest of our race. Others, not so much.' The dwarf chuckles with the thought, but it still feels like a dream. Not only to be included in such a group but to be tasked with reentering Dammerhall.

Sighing he sits on the bed of his room and grunts. The room was clean enough, but the bed was too soft and it smelled vaguely of old socks. His father would rather have faced the Drow than lent out a room like this. The ale downstairs was cheap, but he wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.

Nurin sets the Axe of Grunwald down near the bed and unbuttons the pouch containing his spellbook. He opens it and flips through the meager pages, muttering to himself. If they were going to travel in the dark tunnels, he had better ensure he was prepared. About 10 minutes later, however, Nurin's stomach makes itself known and the dwarf decides the tavern below isn't the worst idea.

He makes his way downstairs, still holding his spellbook with the Axe slung on his belt again. He slides into a table, motioning for an ale and a bowl of whatever brown stew they had today. As he sits, he pages through the book idly.

Reginald responds, My house's specialty is support and supply. We provide much of the infrastructure house Tharnhammer. You depend upon us. One wagon of supplies is the least we can do. As for the supplies, one quarter to one half will be consumed before we ever reach the fissure. Another quarter before we reach the deep places. This wagon won't be nearly as laden as when we begin our journey in earnest.

As for the beasts, we will deal with that boulder when we come to it.

As I post here, I don't intend for us to actually begin with an advantage mechanically. Most or all the food (save the gift for the gnomes) should be gone before it becomes mechanically relevant. GM can even have some spoil or get ruined by some act of the gods if necessary.

Pravic kicks a loose stone near the natural stone bench he is sitting on at the designated meeting area. His pack of gear lies near the base of the tunnel wall, propping up his hand carved, large wooden shield with the holy symbol of Torag emblazoned in the center. He casually swings his Warhammer, similarly marked with holy symbols and dwarven runes, around as he whistles to himself.

Holes and moles
Caves and trolls

Its dark, its deep, its home.

Gems and Ore
Dig some-more!

Its dark, its deep, its home.

His scale mail clinks and clacks lightly as he moves around, singing his merry little tune.

So lost is he in his song, he hardly notices Bali walk up, and jumps a bit, startled at the sudden appearance of someone else.

Thank the gods ye weren't a tunnel elf, or I'd be humming that tune to Torag in person I'd imagine... he cracks a smile to ease the awkwardness of his lack of vigilance.

Grimdahl takes up the tune he also learnt from their parents:

"Dwarven halls
of marble walls

It's dark, it's deep, it's home

In caverns deep
Our gold we'll keep

It's dark it's deep it's home!"

Picking up the stone that Pravic so idly kicked, the druid shoots his brother a rueful look, before replacing it where it originally lay. He has in fact been there for some time, but his soft leather armour and natural quietness mean that it's been easy to overlook him. Pravic's song however prompted him to join in, before he'd even realised what he was doing.

He has been long away from family. To be around others who share that past, those songs, it's hard for him to articulate what it means. An unaccustomed lump forms in his throat, and he stops singing. "So." It's a useful fallback word, for when other words fail.

...

"How long do you think before the others arrive?"

Male Dwarf Paladin (Stonelord) / 2 HP 16/27 {effects: none} | AC 19 Tch 11 FF 18 | F +6, R +1, W +4 | Init +1 (+3 while underground) | darkvision (60'), perception +1

Haha! Well sung brother! Pravic says with a genuine smile on his face. I remember when pops used to sing that. He'd sing at the top of his lungs whene'er he was swinging a hammer or an axe, no matter what he was hittin. Funny how time can change things. I'm pretty sure he had an awful singing voice, but all I remember is fun whenever he was around. And a bit o' hard work. Ok, a lot o' hard work. Good memories, no?

Pravic swallowed the growing lump in his throat back down, in an attempt to keep those emotions in check. For all of their differences, it was good to see his brother again.

So... It shouldn't be much longer I'd guess.

Joking aside, Kalderin responds, Where we're going, these oxen will need plenty of light. Hopefully it won't attract too much attention.

While his tone makes light of the situation, there is worry in his eyes.

Pravic chortles at his brother's comment. I can arrange that, yer hat looks like the perfect target... How long has it been since ye've spent some serious time in the mines? Are ye sure ye can still see in the dark? He jests back.

Understanding the subtle, worried undertones in Kalderin's comments, Pravic looks back over his shoulder, Let 'em come. They'll find out that Tharnhammers and their friends are tough dwarves to chew on!

The expedition takes off tomorrow!

Grimdahl shrugs at Kalderin's remarks. "Between the oxen, the wagon wheels and everyone's armour, things'll find us anyway. Light or not. Best we can do is look sharp and hope not to be surprised."

He gives his brother a slightly chilly look: his time away is still something of a sore spot, oath or no... "Don't worry about me, I have trod the still, moonless watches of the night in the trackless forests of the Seelie Court." This is a slight exaggeration, but the druid is eager to get his point across.

Kalderin shrugs, There's nothing to be done for it either way. Seven dwarves in the dark, regardless of armor, would have been safer. But I suppose that's why we're so many.

In any case, I can provide some light for the oxen. Did anyone else bring something to light the way?

While the scouts talk of light, Reginald starts digging something out from behind the bench seat of the wagon. He produces a bull's eye lantern and lights it. Suddenly, up to 120 feet ahead of them is light enough for the oxen. Reginald mounts the lantern beside him and smiles at the two brothers.
Lead the way, my lords!

260 OE - Gnome King's Highway, Upper Azathyr

Four days pass as the dwarves delve deeper into the Azathyr, following a series of natural caves. The air becomes cool, damp, and stale and any sense of time is lost without the sun and sky. The only sounds are the slow drip from hanging stalactites, the creaking of the wagon, and the chittering of hundreds of bats disturbed by the light of the lantern.

On the third day, a brief tremor can be felt in the ground below and above you. For a few tense moments, the earth moves and strains. The cavern ceiling groans alarmingly and then... nothing. Nothing collapses.

On the fourth day, the cave becomes increasingly narrow and winding until, without warning, the path intersects a wide causeway. High vaulted ceilings and smooth, natural walls frame a remarkably smooth and flat road, wide enough to allow the passing of two heavy carts without incident. This is one of the Deep Roads, a five-hundred year old marvel of dwarven stonework - one of the legacies of Dammerhall. You have reached the Gnome King's Highway.

Before you stands a squat stone obelisk, carved from a single chunk marble. Words in Gnomish are inscribed on its face:

Gnomish:
“5 ½ days east and north to Fasturvalt. 9 days west to Kladdenvalt and 32 days east to Vondehammer.”

Reginald keeps close tabs on the stores as the journey progresses. Every night he cooks and serves a refreshing meal, supervises setting up camp (Yer young backs can take that better than mine.), writes a daily log in a leather bound journal, sees that the oxen are fed and watered, cleans up via simple magic (prestidigitation), and stores everyhing for the next leg of the journey. Every "morning" he rises early, cooks another meal, tends the animals, refreshes canteens, and cleans again while someone does the oxen hitching. He then takes his place as driver and guides the wagon among the rocks and bumps of the cave.

When the pull into the deep road he whistles. I haven't seen one of these in ages! Last time was at least 190 years ago.
Reginald peers at the obelisk for a moment before announcing 5 and one half days north and east on this road to Fasturvalt. We're nearly half way there.

Nurin stumbles out onto the road. The Dwarf cranes his neck up to look at the massive vaulted ceilings and then up and down the road. He paces across the road, marveling at the work. "This is incredible! It's huge! How long did it take to build this and how far does it go? I've never seen a road this wide even in human lands, and they don't have to tunnel it out of rock!"

take 10 on Know: history and Know: Engineering on the roads for 23 and 21, respectively
These roads run to every major Dwarven hold, and all converge on Dammerhall. All told, it's really not to hard to get there. It's surviving the getting there that takes all the effort.
As to how long it took to build? Hard to say. They were built in stages as our people expanded, so they grew with us. They are an echo of our former glory, and a preview of the wonders to come.

Kalderin smiles, All roads led to Dammerhall, Nurin. From there they went...everywhere. Some say they used giant worms to carve out the tunnels. Others say they had gnomish and drow slaves polish the roads with brushes. All the tales sound far-fetched to me. My guess is that it took a long time, and that dwarves carved it like they carve anything else. With patience and hard work.

He nods down the road. At least this road should make the going a little quicker. Hopefully the rest of the way is as well maintained.

Pravic takes the history lesson offered by the two more knowledgeable dwarves with a deep breath, and files it away in his mind for context. As they moved the cart fully into the highway and towards their destination, he was awestruck by the craftsmanship of the tunnel they were now in. Torag's beard, this is stonework worthy of the dwarven reputation...

Aye Kalderin, the cart will move easier, but I think we'll get far more attention here. The snakes don't wait for the mice where the mice never walk... While the last part of Pravic's statement probably should have sounded foreboding, there was a hint of excitement in his voice as he spoke...

Pravic and Grimdahl move out ahead of the light source, so as to make full use of their darkvision. He whispers to his brother, Grim, It's been a bit boring up here so far, and me hammer's itchin ta break somethin. I'll buy yer first and second round if we can take the first thing that jumps out at us 'afore the rest of the group catches up, he says with a smile. I'll throw in another if we can take em 'afore they even finish drawing their blades...

Grimdahl is also impressed by the majesty of the Deep Roads. He is inclined to walk along in silence just taking it all in, but his brother's company prevents this.

He throws a meaningful look at Master T'jener as Pravic bubbles away. Now I know what you had to put up with... As patiently as he can, he explains: "My oath was to guide EVERYONE safely there; that means I have to do what is sensible. I don't want to spoil your fun, but our priority is to watch out for trouble and keep it away from the oxen. If that means waiting for reinforcements, that's what I'll do. Sorry."

He pulls on the brim of his hat, before adding with a rueful smile and a shrug of his leather-clad shoulders: "Besides, I'm not exactly dressed for full-on combat." Forsaking metal armour was the hardest part of his druidic oath.

Bali, marveling at the wonder ours tunnel, has a look of regret on her face. What have we lost? What wonders beyond these lay in the hands of our enemies? What if this is all for naught, when we reclaim what is ours... Ours to work, and the children, softened by the surfaces' decadence wish not to follow in their ancestors' footsteps?

It is amazing, though. I just wish I could imagine the pride on the faces of those who would work these tunnels, but I also hope they were not made by slaves, Drow or otherwise.

Pravic frowns at his brother's sensible words, Bah! Yer no fun. Maybe I'll make ye buy me a couple o' rounds when I finish 'em off 'afore ye come out of the shadows, He quips with a wink.

Looking his brother up and down at the mention of combat dress, he mentions with a bit more of a serious tone, Ye know, I've heard tales of Armor made from Stone. The way the stories go, only the finest of dwarven stoneworkers can make a set that can actually be used in combat without weighing the dwarf down.

He pauses for a moment, chewing on something like it might help finish the thought rolling around in his brain. Somethin' ta think about.

Pravic says this last bit with the utmost seriousness on his face, bushy eyebrows fully raised. With that said, he moves back into position leading this motley crew of dwarves further down the Gnome King's Highway and toward their first destination.

The road continues for a few miles, gently curving to the south and east. This particular section of the highway narrows to a single ten foot wide path flanked by eight foot embankments crowned by large stalagmites. It seems that the dwarven engineers must have carved their way through the stone here.

A strange sight presents itself around the next bend. So far, the Gnome King's Highway has stayed largely debris-free, but her there is an obstruction. A large, broken wagon wheel sits in the middle of the road. It appears to be made of a strange, fibrous white material almost as hard as wood and banded in crude iron.

I put you all vaguely where your marching order insisted. If you'd rather be some where else on the map, you should have control over the token. If not, let me know.

There is an odd wagon wheel in the road. Made of a kind of white wood. Most curious.

Take 10 on appropriate knowledge checks (mods in spoiler above). Perception take 10 for 18

Reginald:
The strange material is actually dried and hardened mushroom stalk. Mushrooms as tall as trees grow in the Azathyr and are used by many races as a wood substitute.

While there's nothing ostensibly strange about the wheel itself, outside of the material used to create it, it's presence on what is otherwise a debris-free road makes it out of place. It also needs to be removed so that the wagon can continue.
