"The forge-father protects all in his care," Ingrid points out to Nurin. "We can offer Fasturvault safety it has likely not seen in a long time." A genuine smile warms her face at Pravic's speech.

Tammar smiles at Nurin. "My people... are a practical lot. They might not like the idea at first, but I will convince them that this is the way. I know it in my gut that you are the way forward for Fasturvalt." Miatha is nods to Tammar's words. Harvald remains speechless, although he seems to soften a little as Tammar speaks.

The following week...

Fasturvalt slowly recovers from the battle. The drow are stripped of their weapons and their bodies are thrown into the Snabbinflod and washed from the cavern. The dead gnomes are given a more gentle treatment; the fallen are given funerals and then buried in the mushroom fields. Lord Geirni is buried alongside his kin, in full battledress.

Afterwards, the gnomes gather to send the dwarves off. Again, the expedition is approached by Miatha, Harvald, and Tammar. In the time since the battle, Harvald has been promoted to Sheriff. Miatha remains the town's resident healer and innkeeper.

The matronly gnome approaches, smiling. "My lords, we have gifts for you. One from each of us. It is my hope that they will serve you well on your quest."[b] She holds out a scroll tube. [b]"I've been doing some research and I believe this to be the most complete map of the Upper Azathyr. I believe that your Dammerhall lies somewhere beyond the Great Jumping Off Point."

Reginald:

At some point during the week...

Nurin knocks on the door of the space Reginald has taken for his study while he's in Fasturvalt. The young dwarf slowly approaches the seneschal with a worn book in his hands. "Master T'jener, sir. May I interrupt?" He waits for the elder dwarf to finish his task and look at him. "Sir, in light of the battle and what we might face even deeper in the tunnels, I was hoping..." He trails off before beginning to speak again.

"Sir, would you teach me?" He holds out the book toward Reginald. "This is my spellbook, sir. It's all I managed to learn from the human mages, but I believe you can teach me more. 'Iron sharpens Iron,' doesn't it, sir? Maybe a dwarf learns better from a dwarf."

"Would you teach me, sir? I fear I'll need everything I can learn to help the Tharnhammers in the future. It won't be enough just to rely on the Axe. I'll need to earn my family's legacy back with my mind as well as my blade."

Nurin slowly mouths the words Great Jumping Off Point, and tries to remember what he's read in the books.

After a long week of providing what little counsel and healing she can, Ingrid prepares for the party's departure with mixed feelings, ready to continue the expedition, yet feeling she can still do more. She is silent as the party is seen off, but raises her eyebrows at Miatha's gift. "This is most generous, Miatha Always-Follows-a-Song. Surely this isn't your only copy?"

Miatha nods. "It is the only copy, but it could be of better use in your quest than sitting in Lord Geirni's library. It's the least I could offer for saving my home."

She clears her throat. "The Great Jumping Off Point is a vertical cavern far to the north of here. Further north than Vothys." She practically spits the name of the drow fortress. "It is extremely deep, at least two-thousand feet. You might find more information on what lies beyond it in the Fungal Jungle. In the center of that wilderness there are ruins on that island. From a distance, they appear to be dwarven. A lord from Kladdenvalt passed through here several months ago, planning to explore them. Perhaps this was an outpost of Dammerhall? I hope that you can find more than I."

Miatha steps back and it is Harvald's turn to come forward. In his hands is a sword, sheathed in a scabbard of steel and dark leather. "This is the Sword of Geirne. Lord Geirni wielded it, as did his father Lord Geirli, and his father Lord Geirne. Our late lord asked for it to be gifted to you in his final moments."

"The Tharnhammers will wield it well. Ye honor us greatly M'lord and M'lady. To a bright future."

Pravic raises the sword in salute as he steps back.

"Well brothers and sisters, It seems we should be off. I expect we have had plenty of time to prepare. Best we travel a bit lighter than when we came here. Shall we?"

With a smile to the gnomes, Pravic begins to lead the way from the underground city to the north, towards the Great Jumping Off Point.

Nurin:

Reginald carefully lays the thick tome he was examining on the table and folds his hands over it. His old eyes bore into Nurin with the skill that only centuries of practice on young pages can provide, flaying him to the core. He looks the young, barely more than a babe!, dwarf up and down. Then his eyes look past him and away from the present into the hazy mists of the distant past.
He then turns to Nurin's spellbook and flips through the pages with casual familiarity. There was potential here, granted, but raw potential was not enough. In order to bring back his house, which Reginald dearly desired, the young Nurin would need much more than a few fancy spells.
Or houses were brothers once. Jamthane and T'jenner served as the right and left hand of the Tarnhammers. I even meet your father once. Before his filthy cowardice.
Tell me, young one, why should we forgive you? Have you ever thought of what your father's treachery meant? To all of us? Our have you only ever thought of how to lift the curse that follows you in your shadow?

Here was his one chance. His golden opportunity to win over Reginald.

260 OE - Somewhere, Upper Azathyr

After the drama in Fasturvalt, miles of black tunnels provide a welcome, if mind-numbing, opportunity to slow down. Unlike the smooth constructed path of the Deep Roads, this trail is completely natural, a stretch of rough walls and ceilings of various heights and widths. The floor gently rises and falls, making it difficult to discern precisely how deep the expedition had journeyed. Separated from the sun and sky, this environment would have driven most men mad with monotony, but these were dwarves. This was their domain.

Nearly a week of such travel, the tunnel forks into two separate paths: one branching north, the other continuing east. A gnomish waystone sits at the intersection. In Undercommon and Gnomish, an inscription reads: "Thirteen days north and west to the Lake of Diamonds. Five days north and east to the Fungal Jungle."

Hex map updated.

PS. The Sword of Geirne is a +1 shortsword in the hands of a dwarf.

Pravic hums another tune, commonplace for him as they travel through the tunnels.

Assuming Ivy is traveling with us:
When they began their trek, after leaving the halls, Pravic had handed the shortsword to the little gnome.

"This would be better wielded in yer hands. I prefer my hammer over this letter opener, even as fine a blade as it might be. As long as ye are traveling with us, the blade is yers, a symbol of yer people and our joint cooperation."

"Lake of Diamonds? Now that sounds interesting. Can't say I wouldn't mind looking into that a bit further. But first things first. The Fungal Jungle, and the secrets it holds about our quest."

After an appropriate break from the travels, the hardy dwarf gets up, and makes to move further down the road. Apparently it would be another 5 days of walking. He didn't mind at all.

Reginald:

"You met my father? That was before...before he abandoned Lord Grunwald? What was he like back then?" Nurin looks wide-eyed at Reginald, clearly seeking some tale of his father before he was simply known as a coward.

The rest of Reginald's words however, seem to slap Nurin in the face as he realizes their implication. He straightens himself up, trying to appear as strong as he can. "Sir, I know my father's stain on our honor is unforgivable. I've had to live with that my entire life. The trust the Jarnthanes had over centuries was wiped out with a single act. The Tharnhammers no longer have sworn squires or sword-bearers to protect them. We left the line without one of it's best allies in the greatest time of need." He shuffles his feet unconsciously.

"But the road to rebuild that trust has to start somewhere. Yes, I've searched for ways to lift my family's curse. But ending the curse isn't the end. It's a means to show the dwarves of the world, show the Tharnhammers, that we might be worthy again. That they...and you don't have to stand alone anymore."

Nurin:

Reginald ignores the youth's initial outburst in favor of the actual topic at hand. He considers the plea and the points Nurin choose. He didn't lean on the tradition of his forebears, nor did he flounder beneath my gaze... but never have I taught any line other than my leige-house. To do so now... is almost unthinkable.
His eyes stare down Nirin as his thoughts swirl.
Who else will take up the Right Hand? The newcomers will demand a traditional protector for the newly established dynasty out else fall into centuries of futile bickering. There is no other option.
You were right to come to me. Because of his shame your father clearly never taught you the traditions of court. If he had, you would have sauntered in here and demanded the right to take up your grandfather's position by the Right of Blood.
And I would have swiftly put you in your place.
However, you did not. And this is your saving grace. Very well, Nurin Jarnthane, your road to redemption begins with me. I will accept you as my student.
However, I do not do this lightly. Never in all my years have I taught one not of the Tarnhammer line. You are the first because of necessity. I expect you to perform on a level worthy of that lineage. Am I clearly understood?

At the Gates:
Ivy who had stayed mostly silent during the Fasturvalt Heir selection, due mostly to her disdain for the area, had decided to join the dwarves on their expedition. Iverna's face was hidden by her cloak as she was handed the shortsword. It seemed to shimmer slightly in the hands of a gnome. She pulled down the hood, to look Pravic directly.

Thank you Pravic. Just know I am here to help you and the rest of the company over Fasturvalt. While it was where I lived it was never my home. Lord Idio- Her grip twisted around the sword. Lord Geirni made sure of that. He was a changed man but he never had the time to revoke his exile of me. His orders stand.

She looked back at the city gates and turned back to Pravic smiling. I pledge myself to the expedition of reclaiming of your ancestral home, Dammerhall.... if you would have me. I ask in return for a place in your halls to call my home.

"Sure, why not? The more the merrier." Grimdahl is preoccupied with trying to find the way there and with what they will encounter on the way. The discussions of what will happen when (if!) they succeed are premature, in his view. Hence his slightly gruff reply.

260 OE - The Approach to the Fungal Jungle, Upper Azathyr

After about a week of monotonous travel, the Fungal Jungle practically ambushes the Tharnhammer Expedition. One moment, the dwarves are crawling through the seemingly endless dark tunnels of the Azathyr when at the edge of vision appears a faint glow. They round a corner and suddenly, the largest cavern in all the world opens below them...

Mushrooms, as tall as the pines of Summermount, stretch as far as the dwarven eye can see. The ceiling reaches almost a quarter mile high and is covered in some sort of sparkling bioluminescent growth, giving it the appearance of stars in the surface world's sky. Violet clouds lazily crawl along this surface, filtering the light and bathing the jungle in a scintillating glow that that shimmers between shades of magenta and cerulean.

To the north, a mountain stretches almost entirely to the ceiling of the cavern although its surroundings are masked by the press of the giant fungi. In the light, birdlike-shapes can be seen flapping above the canopy, some larger than any surface bird.

The flat stone path that led the dwarves here terminates in a twenty foot drop to a platform below.

He looks with a certain awe at the vast expanse: "Earth and Stone! I never saw anything like it."

On the journey, Lothar was even quieter than usual. In a whirlwind of battle and diplomacy, his wards and liege lords the Tharnhammers, with his humble help, had broken a force of Drow and secured the allegiance of an entire settlement. Less than a couple of months ago, Lothar had been little more than the young scion to the last of the Graelson line; a family fallen from grace and he himself forced to work in the mines to support his kin dreams of honor, glory and proving himself as a warrior idle thoughts in the daily grind. Lothar knew he had acquitted himself well in the battle, many Drow falling to his sling and spear. Truth be told, though, he felt a little out of his depth with the trials and travails that surely lay ahead.

Despite his doubts, Lothar knew full well that he was more in his element than many of his kin with his keener darkvision 90 feet from years underground in the mines. Lothar assisted in setting up a rope for everyone else to descend, testing it with a strong tug and watching over the descent with a wary eye to the darkness, his loaded sling in hand.

Nurin precedes Reginald down the rope. He nods to the seneschal, preferring to ensure the landing is safe before his mentor arrives.

Climb, take 10 for a 15.

Ok - Just realized a problem with another one of my games, looks like it affected this one as well. I thought I had posted some time ago that I was going down the rope, but it looks like wayfinder may have eaten that post too. Sorry!

Pravic lets out a low whistle at the sights before him as the group breaks out of the tunnel and into the cavern.

"Eh... if this is what yer sky looks like Grim, mebbe I can see why ye'd stay up there a while now and then. ... Mebbe."

With a grin and an elbow to the ribs, Pravic moves towards the rope and shimmies down, feet braced against the wall for support as he moves.

Take 10 climb down: 10 - 2 = 8

Bali looks up from her pack and realizes the other Dwarves have already started to descend the cliff face.

In such a hurry? It's beautiful in a way. Why not take it in?

Darkvision distance is doubled in the Fungal Jungle.

There is another 20 foot drop to the floor of the jungle. A shallow pool of water (I-4), formed by a waterfall high above on the cavern wall, sits close to the ledge. A natural staircase (I-2), slick with moisture, leads down to the east.

Is there a map I'm missing? I only see the overland (underground?) maps with hexes.

Nurin approaches the ledge carefully, looking out to the jungle landscape. He watches for anything moving among the mushroom stalks.

As the Tharnhammer expedition begins to make its way down the natural staircase, something above cause gravel and pebbles to roll down the sheer rock wall. Bali, Reginald, Grimdahl, and Ivy each look up to notice a pair of subterranean beasts scuttling down the wall, trying to remain hidden. Pale and eyeless, they resemble the scorpions of the surface world, except both are about as large as a deer.

The map has been updated. Bali, Reginald, Grimdahl, and Ivy can each act in the surprise round, but Grimdahl must wait until after the scorpions have acted.

The scorpions are about 25 feet above the party, attached to the wall.

"Join the expedition," they said. "See the underworld," they said...

Hearing the commotion, Bali quickly heads to the aid of the other Dwarves.

Single move action during surprise round to get nearer the action. Do you want to complete the surprise round before continuing? I'm not sure if the enemies are acting the surprise round.
