My Lord, certainly your great city has a force of security up to the task. As guests and the antagonizing party, sending us to place the Drow under arrest would be... Highly suspect.


Geirni frowns at Reginald's words, but he eventually nods in agreement. "You are right, of course, grey beard. You remind me of my father. He was very wise. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to find the appropriate outfit for arresting." The gnome lord hops off of his throne and walks stiffly out of the hall, leaving the dwarves and Ivy alone, save for Harvald.

Hah! About time we got somewhere here. C'mon ye old stick in the mud dwarf! All that walking and prodding the prisoner here, we finally get a chance for something fun and ye gotta rain on the parade. Besides, those drow are going to make mincemeat of that pansy soft skinned gnome. Lets go!

Pravic rushes over to the pile of weapons, and after gathering his gear grabs the leather strap that Reginald dropped as they came in. He runs as fast as his stubby legs will carry him, and tosses the strap into the likely stunned hands of the old dwarf as he goes by.

C'mon Bali, lets bag us some Drow!

Pravic continues his charge, not slowing one bit for his companions. He knows the hook is set for at least one of them...

Pravic Tarnhammer! Reginald roars after him using his old name, from before he was sworn to the Order. Centuries of schoolmaster practice go into the yell, aiming at stopping the young, impetuous dwarf in his tracks. You will not go against the rightful authority of this place and rush off without the proper escort. The king must be with us and so must official guards of the city so that, when we do "bag us some Drow" no one will accuse us of murdering a diplomatic envoy! That is exactly the excuse the Drow need!
He lets that thought worm it's way into his stone head for a moment. It is acceptable that you have retrieved your weapons. However, we will now wait for his majesty.

Grimdhal shakes his head in disgust "Find the appropriate outfit for arresting... what a £$%@#.* Even elves don't do that sort of thing..." He nods at Reginald's words. "He's right, Pravic - we should wait. Geirni still doesn't trust us and we need to have clean hands in all this."

That said, he picks up his weapons and sheathes them, making sure that they're properly sharpened and ready for use. He then waits for the return of the fop.

Pravic skids to a stop as the voice of Reginald instantly brings flashbacks of a long history of being on the receiving end of scoldings that started with his full name, just like that. Just as he begins to protest, realizing he is no longer in that school setting, his brother's words make him realize his protest is empty.

Muttering he walks back to the group. I figured ye would have beat me out the door... He huffs, somewhat petulantly as he passes Bali.

Well what do we do now besides wait for the mushroom-soft gnome to get back with his change of clothes?

Act civil, as is befitting royalty. Reginald is pleased that his scolding has had the appropriate effect, but this outburst has him worried. Are these young ones really up to the task of reclaiming their lost heritage?


Time seems to move slower as the expedition waits for Lord Geirni to return. The tension from the debate in the hall lingers as the chance to catch Malathorn before he leaves Fasturvalt seems to leak away. Nearly thirty minutes pass before it becomes clear that the deep gnome noble isn't coming back.

"Well, so much for protocol," the druid murmurs. "Master T'jener, we aren't going to take Dammerhall back by waiting politely. If I've learned one thing from humans, it's that you get on with it."

Nodding at Bali and Pravic, he walks away, motioning them to follow. "Ivy - where will the drow have gone? If they're still in Fasturvalt, Geirni's order to arrest them has force."

Pravic stands still for a moment, processing the change. He opens his mouth to say something, and thinks better of it, not wanting to push his luck.

Following up on Grimdahl's question, They have a mighty head start on us now, and we are going to have to think about this if we are going to catch them.

He looks to his brother with a little grin, I've never been much of a thinker...

As soon as the party has an idea where they will go to try to find the drow, Pravic urgently leads the party as fast as his stubby little legs will carry him.

Would Bali have been able to watch the Drow as they left? Not following perse, but be able to see if they left the city altogether or went to someone's house in the city.

"Where is the Lord? Did he flee or is he in hiding?" Nurin goes back to retrieve Grunwald's Axe and his dagger. "Which way did the stinkin' Drow go?"


Ivy thinks about Grimdahl's question for a moment before answering. They probably haven't left town yet. It will take some time to resupply. We shouldn't try to arrest them in Fasturvalt, not when they could attack other gnomes. If you want my opinion, we should leave now and set up an ambush at the Needle's Eye.


Bali watches as Malathorn moves down the hill. He is joined by a cadre of ten drow warriors bearing hand crossbows, shields, and scimitars before disappearing into the city proper.

Bali returns to her companions with dire news. There are nearly a score of the damned Drow out there, armed to the teeth. They even have those little crossbows for putting poison in ye!

I hope we have a tangle with that group. I can't wait to bash their stupid faces in.

Bali blinks off a bit of her rage, and looks at Ivy with as devious a smile as ever.

Grimdahl nods at Ivy - local knowledge, always useful. "How do we get to the Needle's Eye? Lead the way." He smiles, grimly. In his youth he was ambushed by drow - time to return the favour.

Lothar's facial expression became more and more like stone, with checked anger behind it, as time simply wore on.

Considering that the lord here all but deputized us on the spot and with the foe making an escape... I think the wrong call was made here.

Lothar had always had difficulty masking his bluntness and lack of tact. What he had said in the end was the result of several minutes of careful forethought.

Needles Eye eh? An ambush would serve us best, this is true. Permit me to re-arm myself and we can set out immediately, Reginald?

Reginald nods. Potential political catastrophe aside, I agree. We must kill them all and make the bodies disappear. Does everyone understand? Even with his hastily granted authority behind us, the drow would have no trouble turning this action into all-out war. We must be sure no solid proof exists for them to leverage.

Pravic smiles and gives Bali a hearty pat on the back.

Now we're talking! He walks over to Reginald and puts his hands on his shoulders, giving the old dwarf a friendly shake and squeeze. I'll pull yer youthful exuberance out of ye yet!

Fully armed, he turns to Grimdahl. I'm not to good at being quiet, but I am pretty good at not letting people past me once the fight begins in earnest. When we spring the ambush, I will volunteer to 'close the gate' so to speak. When do we leave?

Grimdahl manages a grunt of acknowledgment at Reginald's warning. He's for putting their heads on spikes as a warning that there's a new power at work; but that's probably why they didn't put him in charge.

Ingrid mutters a prayer under her breath, gripping her recovered axe and shield tightly as Reginald speaks.


The Needle's Eye is only a few miles south of southern entrance to Fasturvalt. With their plan in place, the Tharnhammer expedition makes good time. Now all that is left is to set the trap.

I've updated the tactical map. You'll have an hour in game time before the drow arrive.

Some details of the map:

1. The drow will be entering from the top of the map.

2. The most narrow section of cave is called the Trader's Bane; it's where you had to stop to take the wheels off of the wagon.

3. The area directly north of Trader's Bane is the ambush gallery. Nature has created a perfect place to stand and fire missiles at those either coming through or stuck at the Needle’s Eye. The formations here create a natural rampart that grants cover to medium creatures standing behind it to fire down in the passage. A small natural stairway leads up the center of the rampart and is easily blocked by a single defender.

Use this time to develop a plan and take your positions on the map.

Reginald slowly hobbles his way up into a position of maximum overwatch where his spells will be most effective. He then loads his simple sling and settles in to wait.

Not being suited to melee, Grimdahl climbs the natural stairway and moves across to allow someone else to join him. He will rain down acid darts from this position.

Hopefully one of his companions will join him and block the drow from coming up the stairway...


Male Dwarf Monk (Sacred Mountain) 2

Lothar assessed the position and gave his recommendation.

This narrow corridor here- ideally, we would want to position ourselves on both sides of it, north and south, and let the Drow get that far before we launch our attack. However... its a lot of ground to cover and likely, only half of us will get an initial volley in. I think its better we set up around Grimdahl and Reginald's position and ambush them here. Gives less time for them to spot us or our plan to go awry, too.

Lothar set himself up near Reginald, taking the time to pick a spot from which he had both cover and the means to conceal himself. He kept his battle-tested spear in hand, resting his loaded sling on a rock beside him.

Nurin follows Grimdahl and stands near the natural stair. "I don't have much in the way of ranged combat. A throwing axe and a cantrip spell, but if they try to charge up the stair, I can hold it against them."

How high are the ramparts if the drow try to climb them or we try to jump down?

A good suggestion Lothar, I like it. Bali and Ingrid could wait up with Grimdahl and Nurin to make sure they can't escape into the tunnels. You and I can wait back here and close the door once the last one enters the zone. Then we squeeze 'em till their gone.

Ivy, what was the general tone of the city when the Drow came? Are most of the gnomes like the late sheriff and yerself? If we can bring Malathorn back as a prisoner, we might just win the favor of many of the gnomes in this city, which would make our ultimate task much easier. Not that I am going to put any of you at risk for the sake of saving some drow's life.

Pravic settles in near Lothar, ready to jump out as soon as the last drow has passed into the ambush.

Bali - you may need to move further down the corridor, We don't want to get caught before all the drow make it into the kill zone... :) We might want to think about having someone on the other side of the very narrow section, but that makes me uncomfortable spreading us that far apart... Just a thought, don't let the perceived indecision keep the story from moving forward!

Ingrid takes up position near Nurin and Grimdahl, gripping not her axe, but her longbow. The weapon feels awkward in her calloused hands, but the plan called for an opening volley.


Ivy walked up behind Pravic, her hood drawn down and large violet eyes watchful of the tunnel. She drew her small dagger from a side holster and said quietly to the group.

The history between my people and the Drow is filled with distrust. We have been fighting the dirty bastards for ages. But most of the city was content to let Lord Idiot parley with them...

Ivy looked off in thought. With a small grin she continued. I know the city would rally together if we brought enough evidence. Capturing Malathorn would be helpful for that, if not just for the fun of getting more information out of him. I would like to know where all the Gnomes Bane went.

After speaking she nodded at the group then pulled up her hood, hiding her bright eyes. She crouched down blending into the shadows silently, her image still vaguely in sight but unnoticeable for someone who didn't know where to look.

The sounds of footsteps echo through the cavern as the drow march south, towards the Needle's Eye. The emissary, Malathorn, leads eight other drow soldiers dressed in dark leather and wielding scimitars and shields. The drow slow their pace to accommodate for the increasingly narrow passage. The voice of Malathorn hisses through the darkness: "Hurry, you fools. We must be well away before the gnomes find what has become of their lord."

Soon they will round the corner and find Bali blocking their way. Now is the time to spring the trap.

The vitriolic hatred that he feels for the drow slowly condenses into reality, and the druid lances it towards his foe.

Reginald, thankfully, has more sence then to announce an ambush. He flips open his Spellbook and starts whispering into his family crest, a ring passed down from times long past to each head of House T'Jener. After a few seconds he releases the spell energy directly from the book through the ring and the ground beneath the Drow's feet becomes dangerously slippery.
Usinf Arcane Bond to case Grease at the feet if the drow in the center of the group, trying to catch as many in the effect as possible without creating hazerdous terrain for our pincer action.

Having slowly snuck closer and shadowed the group of Drow as they approached the ambush point, Lothar took Grimdahl's sudden attack as his cue. He hurled his spear at the emissary, his own fury rising as he attacked the cursed Elf. The throw was exceptional, the spear taking the Elf in the back, right between his shoulder blades.
