I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of a cool magic sword in this adventure.
I can however assure you that, if there is in fact a cool magic sword in this adventure, it is not vorpal.

Mike: Quick question...
With our sorcerer on hiatus, and our bard taking a bit of a back seat right now, would you be OK with my juggling Val's skill selection a bit? She doesn't currently have any ranks in Spellcraft...
(Lack of skill points is one thing that makes playing an ersatz bard kind of difficult...)

Haladir - hope everything is all right and that you'll be posting again soon!
Okay! Whew. Speaking of posting again. I apologize profusely for the extended delays, caused mostly by the strain of RPG Superstar. It's not over yet, but the rest is just sitting back and waiting as the votes come in.
SO! I am renewing my commitment to daily posting in this PBP, which is far too awesome to let falter! Next steps are to give you folks some awesome treasure, and from the sound of it you'll be returning to the lair of the kobolds with the dragon and attempting to place Meepo on the throne. Which, I must say, is amazing.
I know that some players are on hiatus and so if you CAN currently commit to posting every 1-2 days please post here to confirm that. We'll get a feel for things over the next week or so to see how much we have in the way of participation and assess the need (or not) to inject some new blood into the game.
Onward!

I'm in, more or less. I've lost a lot of free time at work (which is a good thing!), so I'll try to check in more regularly at home.
As much as I'd love to play, Haladir, I'm currently in an OSRIC game, and I don't think I've got time for another. Love me some Ravenloft, though, I think I own everything 2E ever put out for that. Out of curiousity, any thought to running the sequel if you finish this one?
Mike the GM |
I have updated the treasure sheet to include the following items, acquired from the dragon's miniature hoard:
- a silver goblet (50 gp)
- twenty four pieces of fine silverware (24 gp total)
- a broken +1 starknife, depicting four dragons' heads spouting "flames" (the blades); one of the blades is broken off (2,324 gp, requires mending or similar magic)
- several kobold skulls
- a scroll of speak with animals and charm animal, written in specially-prepared rat's blood, crumpled into a ball (50 gp)
- a +1 heavy steel shield with the insignia of the Hellknights (1,170 gp)
- a pair of matching mwk daggers in black leather sheathes (604 gp)
- several broken, grimy, bloody pieces of armor
- 120 gp and 800 sp (total value: 200 gp)
Reminder of how it works:
- Put your PC's name in "claims" if you wish to indicate that you want an item
- Put your PC's name in "recipient" if the item goes to your PC
- Put the word "party" next to an item that the party will share (potions, wands, etc.) (and indicate who is carrying it in comments)
- Add other comments under "comments" as necessary
- I took the liberty of indicating many art objects and other valuables as "sold," meaning the gp will be divided between you later on
- The second page/tab of the spreadsheet shows how much treasure everyone has
- When you are done claiming items, mark the "Claims Done?" column on the second page with "Yes"
- Don't worry too much if you go over budget; it all balances out later
- Gold pieces will be divided up later when you go back to town, based on what everyone has claimed

Re: the broken +1 starknife...
According to the mending spell, using it to repair magic items requires that the caster be at least the caster level of the item. The caster level to create a +1 weapon is 5th. Not sure if that's the CL of the item.
A +1 starknife, by the rules, should have Hardness 12 and 12 hp. I was going to ask how many hp it currently has (mending repairs 1d4 hp per casting), but since it's a 0-level spell, Val can cast it at will. (10 min casting time). Assuming a string of bad rolls, it will take at most two hours to repair it to full-- assuming that she's of sufficient CL to do it.
Mike the GM |
Actually, the caster level is 3rd.
Caster Level for Weapons: The caster level of a weapon with a special ability is given in the item description. For an item with only an enhancement bonus and no other abilities, the caster level is three times the enhancement bonus. If an item has both an enhancement bonus and a special ability, the higher of the two caster level requirements must be met.
Meaning you will need to wait until level 3, but then you can repair it. Or, if you can find another level 3+ caster with mending, you can repair it. This choice was deliberate on my part--I wanted to make you work for it!
In the meantime let's say it has 5 hp.

Mike and Robert: So sorry neither of you won the grand prize in RPGSS, but both of your module pitches were amazing. The final round was really tough.
Mike: Despite JJ's commentary about not wanting to publish anything about Aroden worship, the cabal of secret Arodenites led by a deluded witch and a mimic was my favorite part of your pitch! I really don't understand his objection: I think you handled it perfectly without stepping on any established canon. I'm totally going to steal that for my about-to-start tabletop campaign, "Champions of Old Korvosa."
Please let me know what you Society Scenarios will be! I most definitely will buy them!
Mike the GM |
Haladir, thank you! I am pleased with my Top 4 status and the work it will bring. 1st place would certainly have been nice, but I am satisfied. Honestly I was a bit shocked that Robert didn't win! Never trust a poll, I suppose.
I'm glad you liked the cultists and I think it's awesome that you want to use them! My intention was never for them to actually reveal anything about Aroden. They're crazy delusional cultists, they don't know anything! But, that's okay. As I was saying to Robert, they were actually almost kyton worshipers, and the BBEG was almost a guy trying to turn himself into a kyton. I decided to avoid that theme.
I'll keep you in the loop about my scenario, whenever it comes to fruition!

Hey guys, I'm alive! Superstar has sucked a lot of life out of me, however, though since I didn't win I won't be saddled with additional work that'll keep me away from my games. I'm going to take the rest of this week to decompress after everything that's gone on, and I'll be back to my normal efficacy on Monday. Sorry for how things have ground to a halt these last couple months, but that's past now!
If you need to GMPC me for the next few days, please feel free to, I won't mind at all. I should've said something to that effect before radio-silence kicked in.

Mike-- a quick question for you...
In the Desna article in Pathfinder #2 there is mention of substituting Desna-themed statistical equivalents of creatured conjured by summon monster spells. (IOW, same stats, different visuals.)
Would you mind if I did that with Valeria?
On another subject entirely... I just submitted a "Weal and Woe" article for Wayfinder #11 that includes a character that people in this game might find somewhat familiar. I am really hoping it gets published!
Mike the GM |
Good luck with your submission! I haven't submitted anything to Wayfinder yet, though Cheliax is obviously a favorite region of mine. I think my brain is taking a break. I still might get something in by the end of the month, though.
I don't mind the creature substitutions. I encourage that sort of thing.
Hoping we'll get some more posts in the gameplay thread, but I'll post something tonight regardless of what we get.
Mike the GM |
Yay! Let's do this. Sorry you've been unwell, Misroi.
I have had a busy week (standardized testing time at school so I haven't been on the computer nearly so much), and a field trip tomorrow, but I am hoping things will pick up. Especially now that RPGSS is over.

Hey-- if anyone is looking for another PbP, the Carion Crown game I'm playing in is looking for another character or two.

That is tempting, but I'm already planning on joining your Ravenloft game and I think that'll be about my limit for PBPs right now.

Hi, folks.
I wanted to give you all a heads-up that I'll be going silent the week after next. My family is going to England on vacation for a week. We're flying out of JFK a week from tomorrow.
Feel free to GMPC Val while I'm away.
Valeria Baladin |
I just made what's probably going to be my last post in the Gameplay thread until a week from Monday.
Mike-- please feel free to GMPC Val for me while I'm away.
I'm going to assume that we're going to rest for the night, so I am going to refresh all of Val's abilities on her character profile.

So as you've likely noticed it's been over a week since I've said so much as a peep in here. The last week or so has been rather busy for me as I took on a new project at work, and that's going to be ongoing for at least the rest of the year. I haven't had any time to devote to keeping up with my PbPs, be it as a GM or player.
I think, right now, I'm going to have to take some time off from all of my PbPs to try and focus on my RL commitments. I know that's kind of craptastic, and I totally agree. I don't have a firm schedule of when I'll have more time available, either, which is even more craptastic.
So, until I'm able to say otherwise, I'm going to have to put all my PbP activity (which include running anything) on hiatus, which... is kind of the last thing I wanted to do. But at the moment it's really the only choice I have.
I'll understand if you need to find a quick and permanent exit for my character, as this is kinda' out of left field. When I have time again, I'll circle back around and see where things are and if there's still a place for me. I just... don't know when that will be :\
Mike the GM |
Sorry to hear that, Robert, but I'm sure we all understand that other things must come before fun sometimes.
I know Haladir/Valeria will be away for a little while, and we've had sporadic posting otherwise. I think if we want to keep going, we'll want to add some new blood. Unless the 3 folks still regularly posting are fine with a smaller party!
Valeria Baladin |
Sorry to see you go, Robert, but I certainly understand!
And nothing happened in-game while I was away?
I'm okay with continuing as a smaller party, but some new blood might make it a little easier on us.
(Oh, and... England was a blast! Wish I was still there!)

Okay, I've got one player who will be joining us and I've asked him to post here and say hello and get your input on character things. We'll have to figure out a convenient and reasonable way to have a new PC join you folks. Backup from the Thrune Agent? Someone already in the citadel? (Perhaps one of the named NPCs you are already looking for?)
He could even play Meepo.
Acre |
Hey everyone! I wanted to pop in, introduce myself, and say hello.
I'll be joining in on the fun over the next few days, I just need to roll up a character, pitch the backstory elements to Mike, and figure out a decent way to meet up with the adventuring party at your current location. I'll do my best to quickly come up to speed on everything that's happened so far, become familiar with party dynamics, and (hopefully) not make too terrible of an entrance. If anyone has suggestions for how best to work a character for me into the story, I'm open to anything. I'll also try to come up with some decent ideas too, once I'm up to speed on all that has happened in the campaign thus far.
I'll admit, I don't have very much PBP experience yet, but I'll do my best to not be too terrible for you all. Also, I'll stop posting with this account and begin posting under a character alias once I roll a toon up which will work for the campaign and will fit well into the party.
Let me know if anyone has any suggestions or advice, and it's nice to meet everyone!
Chris
