Tybalt Scorzia |
Looking to the murky water with a wince, Tybalt adds. "I've some scroll tubes we could use as brathing tubes & a cleaning cantrip?" He shucks off the heavy napsack with a jingle of metal.
"Afraid, I'd be not much good at swatting them away."
I take it logically the verdant vine bracelet cannot entangle a swarm.
Leandro |
Leandro pulls a length of linen cloth from his backpack and frantically tears it into strips, tying them around the fletching of an arrow and soaking each with oil. "Can somebody light these with a spell or with flint and tinder? Maybe the smoke and flame will drive the insects away. We can wave them or drive them into the ground to burn while we get below the water."
Celestial GM |
There is no dry vegetation, Leandro. The surroundings are decidedly wet.
If you seek underwater refuge, rules for holding your breath apply. Feel free to roll Perception if you want to make sure the water is safe.
When the character finally fails her Constitution check, she begins to drown. In the first round, she falls unconscious (0 hp). In the following round, she drops to –1 hit points and is dying. In the third round, she drowns.
You have time to light your torches if you are going to try to fight it off.
You ought to be reasonably doubtful of your ability to outrun a swarm of insects. You are somewhat hindered by the terrain.
Leandro |
Leandro looks up from soaking his arrow torches and stabbing them into the ground. "Does no-one have a spell or flint and tinder to light these oil cloths?" he asks in despair, "Gods know I did not bring anything."
Res Thannq |
Res watches their guide carefully and moves next to him. "You won't want to use this as an opportunity to abandon us, friend," warns Res. Continuing he says, "If Leandro's torches don't help we are going under the water, together, unless you have a better idea."
Res glances at the water to see if there is any potential threat lurking.

If anybody wants to roll this:
Here's a real-life article about bees. Blood-sucking insects are likely to be even more determined if they smell carbon dioxide.
There are no dangerous-looking creatures in the water.
If you do not flee or dive into the water, you have just enough time to light any torches as the swarm draws close.
Leandro |
Leandro has 1 sq yard of linen for cleaning his armor, a quiver of arrows, and a pint of oil. Will that make us six 'arrow torches' so we can each have one?
"We should each take a torch and spread out a bit. If somebody is engulfed, the rest can stand just clear and try to burn the things with the torches -- without igniting their friend. With any luck, they will find this unpleaseant." Leandro hands out 'torches' as Tybalt lights them.
Tybalt Scorzia |
Lighting Res' oil soaked cloth, it gives off a thick acrid smoke and distributing them to the rest. He holds his torch aloft, gently reciting a small childhood litany that his father used to tell him about the pixies that lived in the forest. The disturbing folk-tales used to comfort children upon the dark winter nights.
The smoke roils mightily, strange faces and grotesque's pull themselves from the black cloud - starting to surround the torso of the bard. "Buzz off, swarm." he calls to them.

"Just... keep it away from me," Leclerc says, trembling. The whine grows louder as the red cloud nears and coalesces. The cloud is a swarm of minuscule red insects which flow toward you directly and with purpose.
Blue areas are fetid water. The red area is the swarm.

Thanks CH, move to R2
Naturally Andrzej prepares to set up a flank. Its in his nature even if the swarm will not be bothered by his actions. Then he hefts the acid flask and pulls out a second flask of oil. The man looks down at his holstered scimitar and feels naked.
Angalia |
Just managed to borrow son's laptop after the fan on mine fried.
Seeing Andrzej's movement, Angalia nods approvingly and slips in front of Eliva. All her instincts wants her to stay in the shadows, but she's fairly confident that she'll be able to roll free of trouble is she has to and maybe catch the swarm from behind.
{if any of that makes sense. Anyway, move to T5.[/ooc]
Celestial GM |
I think Eliva will simply stay put.
The red cloud moves nearer. As it draws close, you hear the steady whine of the multitude of flying insects and can discern the movement of countless tiny red mosquitos, swarming in a flurry of bloodthirst. All of the native sounds of the swamp seem to quiet, drowned out by the droning, predatory haze.
Blue areas are fetid water. The red area is the swarm.

Res moves into a position to be better prepared to help Leandro. Move to T4 and ready an action to swing at the swarm with his torch if it comes within range.
"Be careful brave Leandro. Do not venture too far forward so that we can help."
Also, for what it is worth, remember everyone has resistance for about a minute.

I see. I don't recommend that, since that will put you very close to them, and away from the rest of the party, which means they will have an Angalia-feast. To keep things moving, I will suggest that you stay put until they are closer and then see if you can take advantage of a better angle.
Eliva is also in a good place, so I won't move her.
The whine grows louder as the cloud of insects bears down upon you. They descend upon Leandro, as the nearest warm life form. The haze is made up of thousands of tiny insects, their needle-like proboscises twitching eagerly. Each is tinged with a hue of blood-like crimson; taken as a whole, they give the impression of a roiling cloud of bloody mist.
As they fall over Leandro, the find the tiniest openings in his armor to work their way in and find flesh, drinking deeply of his life force.
Leandro, you can take an AoO against the swarm as it enters your space. Then take 1 point of Con damage and roll a Fort save vs disease. If you are immune to disease as a paladin, then no save is necessary.

I get generic melee attack of +7 but using an arrow as a torch (improvised weapon=-4) for a total of +3? Not sure what the damage is.
Flaming Arrow Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Leandro swings his fiery weapon through the swarm and tries to protect his vital areas as the swarm descends, but he finds that they are highly invasive. "Attack, friends! Do not fear to strike me, else these will assuredly drain me dry," he coughs, chewing and spitting out the vermin that fly into his mouth as he speaks.
Uuuuuugh.
Tybalt Scorzia |
Remember you get a +1 to hit & damage due to bardic song.
Tybalt breaks off from his wise-cracks as he looks on in horror as they engulf the knight. "Hey, I've got a bright idea. If they are like moths they might be attracted to light."
He starts to sing an airy song, soft but insistent. Motes of golden light coalesce around the minute creatures, basting them in a golden radiance.

Move to R7. Attack with burning torch. attack: 1d20 + 5 - 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 5 - 4 + 1 = 20, bludgeoning damage: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 + 1 fire damage
Res moves forward to aid Leandro and tries to position himself in a way to avoid any spells that Anuqa may try. He swings his torch at the swarm and tries to carve a small swath through the insects.
If a torch is used in combat, treat it as a one-handed improvised weapon that deals bludgeoning damage equal to that of a gauntlet of its size, plus 1 point of fire damage.
Andrzej Plamen |
Andrzej aims at the nearest part of the swarm, throwing the flask of alchemicals overhand and down into the midst.
Alchemists fire 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25, damage 1d6 ⇒ 2+1(extra 50%)=3pts. 1 point of splash damage to Leandro.
The flask shatters with shivers of glass blown around by the liquid flames. Insects curl and blacken all around.
