Res peers past Andrezj and shakes his head. "Nothing good usually comes from going down. Do you care to lead the way Andrzej? I can provide a light on your scimitar. Also, everyone stays near me, I will cast Gorum's blessing on you if we encounter something dangerous."

Res double check's Gorum's holy symbol and readies a Bless spell if they are attacked.

"I will go forward for now. Stay close."

Leandro waves a hand and sends the dancing lights down the stairway ahead of him, then starts down if he sees no obvious danger, keeping his glaive pointed down the stairs ahead of him.

Stupid posts getting eaten! *shakes fist* How wide is the stairway? Can we go down 2 abreast?

It's quite narrow. It must have been a service stair. Clearly not a main stairwell. It's about 4 feet wide. You could squeeze by one another if needed, but could not descend 2 abreast.

The floorboards of this staircase creak quietly beneath your weight. While they are not unsturdy, they are old and have settled with time. The narrow staircase descends to a landing and then switches back to descend to a small door like the one you entered. The disturbance in the dust on the floor makes it clear that that your quarry continued downward, while this small door does not look like it has been opened in years.

The stairway continues to descend until it terminates at a small door in what must be the cellar level. This door is also closed, but a semicircular track in the dust indicates it has been opened relatively recently.

"This is the right way," Leandro says back up the stairway to the rest of the group, "Is this Sergei cunning enough to trap a door? I doubt he had much time to do so, knowing you would be coming after him."

Male Human Cleric/6 {HP:49/49, AC 16 (11 touch)

"Sergei may not have enough time to build a trap, but there may be an old trap set by this building's previous owners. We have an expert in dealing detecting and disabling traps. Angalia, have you recovered sufficiently from your encounter in the room above to check this door?" says Res.

Angalia squeezes past and closely examines the door.

Leandro sends the dancing lights through the doorway first, then steps through if there is no obvious threat, taking a position to the right of the doorway if there is room, so that others can come through or at least see. Because he certainly can't. He holds his glaive at the ready in case of a threat.

Male Human Magus 6 AC21/T16/F15, Hits 50/50, Init +6, F+8, R+7(+9), W+6; Perception +0, Arcane Pool 6/6

Andrzej goes in and left, holding his scimitar out front and the other with spread fingers beside it. Ready with magic and steel.

His searches high and low for the next threat be it dead or alive or something between.

The door opens onto a room that is not as dark as you expected. Hanging gaslamps hooded with green-tinted glass cast a sickly glow onto this tiled chamber. Each wall has another small door leading elsewhere.

In the center of the room, two large porcelain bathtubs are situated side-by-side, rusty and cracked with years of neglect. The tiled floors are smeared with years of grime and mildew. Shelves and counters line the walls, cluttered with instruments, bottles, and rotting papers.

In the nearer tub, a gaunt middle-aged man steeps in a bath of icewater. His skin is a foul shade of blue and his eyes have a sunken, lifeless quality. The sight of it makes you feel cold, imagining what a brutal shock that must be to one's body. He turns to look at you with a blank expression.

Eliva:
You hear faintly the sound of abundant scratching, as of hundreds of claws scrabbling over wood and stone. The sound is distant and muffled.

Male Human (Taldan) Paladin 6(2neg): Init -2, Perception-2, F+11, R+6, W+9; HP 42/54 {CPE 2/4 3D6; LoH 4/8, 3d6; smite, 0/2; divine armor 0/1}

"Gah! Foul! There is not supposed to be anyone in this wing. If we stand to battle, stay near me so divine Shelyn can help protect you," Leandro mutters to Andrzej and includes Res in the directions, then raises his voice to call to the man in the tub. "You! Have you seen a man come through here bringing one of the Sisters with him?" He steps forward to within glaive's reach of the man but goes no further, waiting for his comrades to catch up.

He also tries to see if anyone/anything is in the other tub.

The man in the tub says nothing, but rises slowly to his feet and walks through the wall of the tub to stand on the floor beside it. He is wearing a long tunic that drips frigid water onto the floor about his feet.

From his movements and his seeming disregard for physical objects, it is apparent that he is an apparition of some kind. The water that he tracks on the floor, however, is quite real.

As you move a little closer, you can see two giant rats in the far tub. As you take notice of them, they take notice of you. Unlike the thing you spied earlier, these vermin resemble ordinary rats in every way except for their size.

At this point you will have to roll Initiative. Map coming shortly.

The hypothermic man does not seem to be an undead creature as such. He is only the visual manifestation of a haunt.

The primary difference between the two is that an incorporeal undead is aware of its surroundings and has its own will. A haunt is an energy that may manifest visually, but acts according to a pattern in response to stimuli.

The apparition is unmoved by Leandro's rebuke.

Knowledge (Religion) DC 20:
You can read the previous spoiler for DC 15.

In addition, you know that haunts are typically a resonance of some foul event. You can surmise that some poor soul died in the manner in which you now see this apparition. Destroying something associated with the traumatic event may quiet the spirit.

You also suspect that, since the man basically froze to death, the application of heat may nullify his presence. As always, positive energy is effective against haunts as well.

Knowledge (Nature) DC 11:
These are dire rats, foul creatures known to spread disease with their bites. While they can be dangerous, they are no match for accomplished adventurers. Still, sometimes the humblest foe can tip the balance of a challenging combat.

Back at last. And it seems that Angalia has been showing her usual lack of willpower combined with her ability to roll dazzling init.

Long silent and still slightly dazed by the horrors surrounding her, Angalia feels as though she has been moving on auto-pilot for the last few moments. Now she clears her head and tries to concentrate.

Eliva's arrow finishes off the remaining dire rat, which expires pitifully. Meanwhile Andrzej's spell diminishes the energy that produces this dreadful apparition.

Tiffana moves into the room and, following Andrzej's lead, tries to disrupt the haunt. Disrupt Undead 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 The ray of energy fails to connect with its target.

The apparition continues its movement, drawn, it seems, to your presence. He shuffles toward the nearest target, Eliva, trailing frigid water on the tiles behind him. His very presence brings an unnatural cold, which creeps into your bones and wraps itself around your insides, chilling you from the inside out. The apparition bears an expression of relief, as if it is drawing from the heat of your body.

Against Eliva: Touch attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 for 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 4) = 10 cold damage and Eliva is staggered for one round.

A faint scrabbling, at first heard only by Eliva's sharp senses, grows louder. Drawn by the commotion, a rat emerges from a grate along the far wall. It is followed by another, and another, until hundreds of foul rats have poured into the chamber, scrambling over one another in a frenzy. The undulating masses of matted brown fur move toward you.

Stay as far away as possible. [url=http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/additionalMonsters/creatureTypes.html#swarm-attack]This link may help.

female Human Rogue 4

How adorable.

Angalia looks from the oncoming rats to the apparation and realises that she's woefully in-equipped to deal with the latter.

"I'll work on the rodents," she mutters, feinting first left and then right to distract the nearest mass.

Can I feint to gain CA against the swarm and if so, what to roll?

Attack swarm 1, preferably with CA, by chucking a dagger at them.
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 - more if I can get sneak attack damage into them.

Unless Andrezj does something that prevents this:

Leandro's turn:

Leandro dashes forward to stomp the oncoming rats, not wanting them to get to his companions.

Charge to F5, stomp (gauntlet) attack on the swarm.

Unarmed Charge: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 = 14 for Boot/gauntlet: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 bludgeoning damage.

"Faugh! Vile, unclean things!"

Angalia: It would take your standard action to feint. It would be a bluff check against DC 13, but you would take a -8 penalty on the roll because the target only has animal intelligence. Given the uncertainty you could make the check and the action you have to sacrifice on the attempt, it's probably not a good approach against this foe.

To all: As a swarm of tiny creatures, the rat swarm takes half damage against piercing and slashing attacks. However, that's an improvement over most swarms, which take no damage at all. You can get a 50% bonus on damage rolls using area effects or splash weapons, such as alchemists fire or acid.

Res channels the power of his god to cleans the haunting from the room. The apparition looks pained by the barrage of positive energy, but is banished for the time being.

Angalia's dagger manages to skewer several of the rats, while Leandro crushes many more. Still, the undulating mass of vermin rushes toward you.

"Rat fricassee. Tasty."

Andrzej: I reviewed the rules for splash weapons. First, you do not take a -4 penalty for non-proficiency, as that never applies to thrown splash weapons. (If that -4 was for something else, let me know.) Second, AC 5 is for targeting a grid intersection on the map. If you do that, then adjacent creatures only take the 1 point of splash damage. To inflict full damage on the swarm, you have to target its touch AC. Since the touch AC for the swarm is 14, you hit, even with the -4 penalty you did not need to take.

Last question - is that against swarm 1?

Andrzej's pot of Alchemist's Fire rains searing flame upon the piled vermin. The scent of burning fur and flesh stings your nose.

Rat swarm one, thanks for sorting out the -4 (it was for an improvised weapon) and I'll aim for straight touch attacks next time. Cheers

Andrzej looks on as Leandro moves in front. "I have more. Use oil too. They will disperse inevitably."

Yes, Leandro. 1 point of splash damage.

Tiffana approaches and spreads her hands in front of her, shooting gouts of flame at the amassed rats.

Move to H7. Burning hands in a cone to catch both swarms. 4d4 ⇒ (2, 1, 1, 1) = 5 fire damage, reflex save for half. 1 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14, 2 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14. Both fail. Total 7 damage to each.

The first swarm is utterly annihilated. A few charred rats from the mass scurry into the walls, but their numbers are too decimated to pose a threat. The other mass is badly burned, but continues.

The second swarm avoids the fire-throwing sorceress and engulfs Leandro instead. The vile vermin climb up the paladin's legs, clawing and biting at his flesh with their filthy claws.

Leandro takes 1d6 ⇒ 2 swarm damage, but is immune to their Filth Fever.
