DM Wren |
Welcome! This is where we post out-of-character messages. Please post things your characters do and say in the Gameplay post. There you will also find the intro description. Please wait for me to make a first post tomorrow before posting in Gameplay. Basically, if your character has not been introduced yet, don't post anything.
DM Wren |
sup tim. so a helpful thing to do is to put a few basic stats in your "classes/levels" section, so that it shows up underneath your name on each post.
For example, a Paladin would put:
Paladin of Sarenrae 2|HP: 11/17|AC: 19/11/18|Saves: +6 Fort, +3 Ref, +7 Will|Initiative: +1|Perception: +8|Sense Motive: +8|Lay on Hands: 2/3
Something like that. That way we have a quick reference for making more common checks/rolls.
Sóru |
Wren, when you get a chance, check out Sóru's backstory. I think I have a good setup for eventually taking the Nemesis feat.
DM Wren |
Ok Rougar and Gill can begin posting in the gameplay section, now. Soru i'll add you in soon.
DM Wren |
So: for behind the scenes rolls, specifically those that in a table top game the players would not see (stealth, perception, sense motive to name a few), I have two ways of doing it.
One is that I just do them off the record and you guys trust that I'm being fair. The idea is that you shouldn't be swayed by how successful you are, because your character always thinks he is doing his best and does not know whether or not he is being lied to, is spotted or cannot see something.
Second is that I post them in a "spoiler" button. That way you can see the mechanics if you want, but they are not immediately apparent when you read each post.
Either way, I will be paying strict attention to the "retry" rules listed in each skill description. You cannot, for instance, see that you got a bad score on a Knowledge: Arcana check, and immediately make the check again. You cannot retry knowledge checks at all. Some things, like certain instances of Spellcraft to write a scroll to your spellbook, require a retry of a week. Some things, like Diplomacy for gathering information require waiting a day, while asking the same request of a person will not change their attitude (there are exceptions to this, of course). So as you can see there are a lot of possibilities and it's mostly written out in the Retry section of each skill.
Thoughts?
Rougar |
The traits I took allow me to re-roll certain skill or ability checks. If I'd like to re-roll and take the better result, how would you like me to express this? I'll add those traits to my info line
DM Wren |
Just add a second dice expression and in the description put (re-roll). You can preview a post and it will roll your dice, and those results will stick even if you edit the post and preview/post it again.
So you can preview the post and see your first roll, then if you want to reroll you can add the second dice expression and then submit post
Rougar |
Ok, in that case, would I be able to apply re-rolls to behind the scenes rolls like the perception check in your last gameplay post or would they only apply to checks that I am consciously taking?
DM Wren |
Reflex saves will always be posted. Do you re-roll anything else? I can make sure i post those checks for you.
Rougar |
Just 1 untrained skill and 1 skill or ability check per day. I roll twice when I use those traits, so I can pick the better result.
DM Wren |
Those traits sorta break the in-game/meta-game relationship, but I like them, so I'm determined to make it work well for us. We'll do it like this. If there are rolls inside of a spoiler button like this:
Perception Soru: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18
Perception Gill: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Perception Rougar: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
That is meta-game information and I just have to trust all of you to not use it to effect your decisions. This would happen if you walked into, say, a cave and didn't specify your own perception rolls, or if something was happening like somebody trying to sneak up on you or trick you with a bluff. Usually as a DM i'd just roll dice constantly to water down your awareness of "something is happening". I can't really do that here, so I'll just substitute making inconsequential "hidden" perception rolls instead. Tim is allowed to re-roll these checks as per his traits. Post them however you want, Tim, just specify that they are re-rolls. This is also in favor of transparency, so you guys get a good idea of how your rolls are effecting your characters performance.
You are, of course, still allowed to make whatever rolls you want. But keep in mind that if they violate the Retry rules, or any other rules/circumstances, I'll just ignore them and probably not say anything about it.
There will also be other rolls that I don't show at all, but these are only rolls that NPCs make, until the time if/when someone takes an ability that allows them to force opponent re-rolls. They do exist, but we'll burn that bridge if we get there.
DM Wren |
Jon is there only one page to your character sheet? If there is a second page, could you send it to me?
DM Wren |
I'm realizing now that the lost two posts I made in the game play tab were under the idea that round by round combat had started, even though I said it hadn't necessarily. Sorry about the confusion on my end. 'combat' has started (although you do not have to attack anyone, of course, since no one has attacked you outright)! just treat my 'corrections' like reminders. I like to just explain rules a lot anyway, because it keeps them sharp in my mind.
Sóru |
I should let you guys know about my work schedule. I work from 5am-2pm most days of the week, so I will usually post in the afternoon and early evening. I'm on a short break right now so I'm posting this from my phone, but I'm going to wait until this afternoon to post in gameplay so I don't feel rushed and so I'm in front of a proper computer.
Rougar |
I'll try to be as specific as I can be with my actions and yes, I was going to move my character where you put him, above the merchant. However, I'm not going to take the readied action, since it would involve interrupting the guard. I'd rather not undo what's already happened.
Gill Xcehtoc |
Well I kinda flipped a coin on wether to go for the jug or for another purse, Gill isn't to wise I figured he would go for the most immediate thing. He also thought she was a rookie.
So if I went up behind her am I close to her after she went on the stage or did she bolt away?
DM Wren |
Gill is right behind the guard. Actually he's right next to both. He can see both of them, although they both have 20% concealment.
Check the Map.
Sóru |
Would Sóru have known that the boy cast the spell? Although it is evident to me as the player, it's fuzzy as to if Sóru knows. This will weigh upon what I do for my turn.
DM Wren |
Yeah Jon is right. Soru didn't notice the boy initiating the somatic part. Soru only realized that a spell was cast. From where is not quite clear to him, since there are at least three different possibilities.
Rougar |
So when changes are made to our character sheets throughout the campaign would you rather that we submit them to you to put into the google drive, or can we just do it?
Gill Xcehtoc |
Hey Taylor do you have Steam or any other kind of social program where I can add you?/talk to you/bug you to post? Not that you don't post enough, not saying that, just trying to get more contacts.
Percy Grenville |
So I uploaded a rough draft of my character sheet so far into the google drive folder. I'm still working on my back story, but let me know what you think of Percy so far, Wren.
DM Wren |
Yes. The gun was either given to Percy by his parents (a sort of family heirloom, gotten from one of your parents travels to Lantan) or he found his gun in a coastal ruin and he discerns that it is probably from Lantan and most likely of gnomish make. Quite the find. Firearms in the realms are exceedingly rare and are revered as magic items are.
DM Wren |
Matt let me know when you're ready and I'll think of a way for you to enter the game.
Percy Grenville |
Cool. It was definitely a family heirloom.
I'm going to have my character sheet completed by 7 pm, so if you want to throw me into the game, go right ahead. Really all I'm going to adjust is one skill point and my equipment needs filled in.
Rougar |
Hey everybody, just wanted to let you know I'm leaving for vacation for a week today. I'll be back August 2nd. This should hopefully not affect my posting though, as I'll have my phone on me and access to wifi.
DM Wren |
Thanks Tim. Thanks Taylor. It's worth noting I'll probably post more slowly on the weekends.
Gill Xcehtoc |
Sorry about my lack of posts yesterday I was at a golf tourney all day and got kinda drunk.
Sóru |
Hey guys. Give Matt a couple days to post. I just help move him in yesterday so he's a bit all over the place and may not have the time or ability to get online for a day or two.
DM Wren |
Do you guys wanna talk about where you'd like this adventure to go? I'm fine with it being generally direction-less, but if you're interested in one specific thing I can work on hooks for that. Pirates? Courtly Intrigue? Epic Journey? Pirates seemed to be the first interest when we first talked about it, but I really like the Epic Journey thing, too, because of your characters being generally non-human and that fits in my mind a la Journey to the West or something.
Rougar |
I'd vote for either a pirate journey or some type of epic adventure. Those sound the most interesting to me.
Also wanted to ask you about some of my vow of poverty stuff. Would you rather I adhere strictly to the tenets of it about possessions or would you be okay with me treating it more loosely? For example, under the vows I'm not allowed to carry the sword I picked up, it's too valuable. Also I'd want to purchase food and water to carry with me, but the vows forbid it.
To me, the vows are about not holding wealth in excess of need. The sword, to Rougar, is a clue about the murder. He has no intention of owning it. Food is necessary, since he is not a natural hunter.
The benefit of the vow is good, +1 ki point per monk level, so if you decide you'd rather it be strict adherence to the rules, I'll be happy to drop it. The rules as written are a little to restrictive for me.
Gill Xcehtoc |
I like the idea of an epic pirate journey but I do like the idea of going west and maybe we can have character adventures too that add to our individual story with help from each other.
DM Wren |
Cool. I've got a better idea now of where to lead you guys.
Tim - your interpretation seems fine. A strict reading of the vow does allow for "wealth" able to purchase 1 week of food, bathing and shelter, so you could interpret "wealth" there as just straight up carrying food. You could also carry enough soap and a tent for a week, if the weather required it. Basically you just can't accumulate wealth more than what is totally necessary in the near future. Amassing a months worth of food on a ship, for instance, would violate the vow, but only if it's Rougars idea and he claims ownership. If the rest of the party stockpiles food, that's mostly fine, because Rougar just wouldn't consider it to be his.
You guys can also post to me equipment and stuff that you find while researching. Say you find a particularly cool ring in the magic items section that you want, just post it in the OOC discussion here and I can consider plugging it in somewhere. Tim, if you find cool monk magic stuff that you like the effect of, still let me know and I can work something out. Devotion to Rougar's vow might earn him favor in the form of item-like powers.
Percy Grenville |
Just letting everyone know I will be posting Percy's response to the local questions within 12 hours. Hopefully by 10/11pm tonight, but possibly even as early as 6/7pm.
Rougar |
Wanted to check something in terms of how an item ability would affect me.
If I were to have the effects of Bracers of Armor on me, would the armor bonus they provide make me count as armored, thus disqualifying me from certain monk abilities?
In other words, does being armored mean having an armor bonus or actually wearing a piece of armor?
DM Wren |
Actually wearing a piece of armor. the "as if" in the bracers of armor description is crucial to this specific issue. Also notice that this distinction allows you to use the spell Mage Armor. If you were to drink a potion of it, for instance, it would buff your AC without disqualifying you from monk abilities.
So basically, yes, you can wear bracers of armor as a monk.
Rougar |
Ok cool, good to know.
I think I actually like Monk's Robe more than the bracers for an item-like ability, if you decide you'd want to give me one.
Gill Xcehtoc |
We're talking about treasure? We haven't really done anything yet treasure worthy
Rougar |
In one of Wren's other posts, he talks about if we find a cool treasure while researching, he'd consider finding a way to insert it into the campaign.
I didn't mean for my post to come off as "You should give me this", just more "this is a cool treasure"
