Cardinal Lucius d'Borja |
"We must retreat!" Lucius calls, as the rat's words make it to his ears. "Fall back, lead them into the pits from which they came!" Suiting actions to words the Cardinal retreats, doing his best to look paniced, while actually moving rather carefully to avoid the pit traps.
Boga |
"Zagathoth!" Boga calls upon seeing the powerful blow deflected by the skeleton's armor. "Use blunt weapons if you can! The evil of the skeletons resists your sharpened blows!"
EDIT: Oops! Didn't realize it had rolled over. Looks like we're truly not on the same page... Lol
The Ogon Fox |
Ogon turns into a little fox again standard action but hesitates before leaving the room.
I'm going to wait until the rest of the party moves. I want to be last (except for the skeletons) in the room because in this form I can walk directly on the platform. That should help our deception since everyone else would be skirting around it.

Arc Perdu le Rouge |
Arc backs off from the fight to join Ogon near the exit, firing off one more ray of positive energy just to do what little he can.
Disrupt Undead: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (7) - 2 = 5 against Touch AC

Boga |
Round 2
Hearing Lucius' call for retreat, Boga pauses and looks at Zagathoth, "He's hurt, but he's into the fight now. Will he run?"
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
Boga shakes his head, "I don't think he will. I better stay and help." He reaches into his pack and pulls out a dark sticky bag. He takes a step forward as he launches the sack towards the skeleton. "The blessings of the Lord come to those who also help themselves!"
Tanglefoot Bag vs Touch: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
"Zagathoth, I have failed you. Go with Lucius! I'll catch up!"
Retrieve tanglefoot bag from pack. 5' step. Throw
A tanglefoot bag is a small sack filled with tar, resin, and other sticky substances. When you throw a tanglefoot bag at a creature (as a ranged touch attack with a range increment of 10 feet), the bag comes apart and goo bursts out, entangling the target and then becoming tough and resilient upon exposure to air. An entangled creature takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls and a -4 penalty to Dexterity and must make a DC 15 Reflex save or be glued to the floor, unable to move. Even on a successful save, it can move only at half speed.
A creature that is glued to the floor (or unable to fly) can break free by making a DC 17 Strength check or by dealing 15 points of damage to the goo with a slashing weapon. A creature trying to scrape goo off itself, or another creature assisting, does not need to make an attack roll; hitting the goo is automatic, after which the creature that hit makes a damage roll to see how much of the goo was scraped off. Once free, the creature can move (including flying) at half speed. If the entangled creature attempts to cast a spell, it must make a concentration check with a DC of 15 + the spell's level or be unable to cast the spell. The goo becomes brittle and fragile after 2d4 rounds, cracking apart and losing its effectiveness. An application of universal solvent to a stuck creature dissolves the alchemical goo immediately.
Quinlan Ifrean |
Quinlan follows the cardinal somewhat apathetically, he keeps the holy water in hand just in case. "It's a good thing I came along, otherwise you would all be in real trouble."

Johann Kaltgeboren |
round 3
After missing twice, and then receiving a nasty cut, Johann decides to respect the Cardinal's wishes and he withdrawals out of battle and back to the trap room. Knowing Zagathoth will be slow to leave, Johann calls out "ZAGATHOTH! We are not leaving! We are just moving to a better position. Come! This way!"

Knowing Zagathoth will be slow to leave, Johann calls out "ZAGATHOTH! We are not leaving! We are just moving to a better position. Come! This way!"
The skeletal warrior tries to take a swipe at the Bear-man as he backs away, but Johann's careful strategic withdraw quickly removes him from harm's way, and the skeleton's rusty blade cuts through empty air where the shifter had stood a split second ago...

**round 3**
Not wanting to waste an opportunity to attack with a flanking partner, the orc swings his sword again before considering his companion's words.
power attack (flank/grudge): 1d20 + 6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 2 + 1 = 18, for: 2d4 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (4, 4) + 9 + 1 = 18

better position? we were getting them surrounded...

Unwilling to risk leaving himself open by just fleeing, he takes a step to his left in preparation for heading back down the hallway. 5' move south (so I'm SE of the skelly again instead of due east.

Round 3:
The skeletal champion fighting Zagathoth swings its rusty blade at the orc...1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15...but Zag parries with his falchion as he steps closer to the east archway...
As Johann backs away toward the east archway, back toward the pit chamber with the illusionary grail, the skeletal champion turns its attention to the little fox...it’s rusty blade 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18 slashes Fox for 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 damage!
The Ogon Fox |
Ouch! The little fox AC 17 isn't enough for that one!
The little fox yelps in pain! Ogon flees, his tricksy intentions supplemented with real fear now.
Withdraw action to avoid provoking an AoO when leaving the first square, and it's a double move (80ft for me). I'm not sure where everyone is now, but I figure I'll end standing on the platform, next to the far edge so if the skeletons walk on it and it falls, I think I'd be able to leap 5ft to the solid floor if I make a reflex save.
Michael Johnson 66 |
The adventurers fall back to the previous chamber, where the illusionary grail rests as a lure for a 15-foot-by-10-foot covered pit trap...
The little fox brings up the rear, closely pursued by the two skeletal champions! Dashing across the middle of the chamber, springing over the illusionary grail, and leaping onto the safe path at the east side of the chamber, the little fox clears the concealed pit just as the two skeletal champions begin to cross it...
Skeletal champion guard |
The pit swings open, yawning over a 20-foot drop onto numerous spikes! The two skeletal champions fall hard upon the spikes, taking 2d6 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8 falling damage and 5d4 ⇒ (2, 4, 4, 3, 3) = 16 piercing damage! CRAAAASSSHHH!!!
The two skeletal champions lie motionless at the bottom of the deadly pit, destroyed by the fall and being impaled on the spikes!
The Ogon Fox |
Ogon takes his usual shape again and groans. "Ohhhh that hurts," he says as he presses a hand to his sword wound and shuffles over to lean against the wall.
Boga |
"Armed, animated skeletons. What other evils wait within? If we are to survive, perhaps we should organize into teams of complementary members."
"Well, that could have gone better. I was beginning to worry, but all's well that ends well! And what an amazing finish. Ogon, excellent idea to lure them directly across the trap." Boga peers at the impaled skeleton corpses, "I'm just glad that wasn't us. That easily could've harmed us beyond repair. Thankfully, none of us are in such condition now. Gather round and by the blessing of the Lord, you will be healed."
Channel Energy: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7 Channel twice to heal
Channel Energy: 1d6 ⇒ 3 Third Channel to top everyone off
EDIT: Boga's halo glows brightly. It pulses 3 times as soothing waves of healing energy ripple outward. Wounds seemingly spontaneously and miraculously heal thousands of times faster than normal, leaving only torn clothing and dented armor as a sign of what once was there.
"Let's continue. We should find another crystal before taking the message to the Pope."
The Ogon Fox |
The Ogon Fox watches in amazement as his wound knits itself up till he is like new, except for needing a wash for the blood.
"Boga, thank you, truly. My faith in our Lord is bolstered by this act. Thank you!" he says as he vigorously shakes the man's hand.
Michael Johnson 66 |
The adventurers return to the chamber where they encountered the skeletal champions (area 12), where a search reveals nothing of value or interest, just more skeletal remains of Romans in wall alcoves...
Continuing westward, they pass through a narrow corridor that opens into a spacious chamber (area 13) with a dark archway in the north wall...
This square chamber is an ossuary, with numerous alcoves containing the skeletal remains of Romans. The ceiling, some twenty feet above, is carved with bas relief images of cherubim playing harps and seraphim sounding trumpets, but all of the angelic images have been defaced...
Four high-backed wooden chairs surround a square wooden table at the center of the chamber, and a parchment map of the city of Rome with red Xs marked at several locations lies atop the table, along with several sheets of vellum bearing writing in a strange, diabolical-looking script (Infernal)... Two inkwells and quills also lie upon the tabletop...
Johann Kaltgeboren |
Johann is bleeding from his arm. "HEY, UH, I HATE TO BE A BURDEN, BUT CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THIS? I THINK ZAG TOOK A BLOW TOO. AS FOR THE FOX... OH, HE IS FINE. DON'T WORRY ABOUT HIM."

Lol... Boga channeled three times back in area 11 after the skeletal champions fell in the pit, so all wounded PCs should be fully healed... he restored a total of 10 hp to everyone in the party...

Hahaha nice. Boga did get everyone 10 points of healing, though, from his 3 bursts of channel energy. That brought me back up to full.EDIT:

"NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! EVIL-DOERS, PERISH!"
The sounds of a crying baby and evil chanting is all it takes to set Johann off. If a child is in danger, that is all that matters. He rushes forward, heedless of any other danger, and doesn't even know if his companions are following.
Hopefully they are.
Satanic cultist |
Johann charges like an enraged mother grizzly protecting her cubs into the hexagonal chamber (area 14) to the north...
Here, he encounters a chilling and infuriating scene: a pair of black-robes figures wearing skull-face masks are standing to east and west of a diamond-shaped firepit at the center of the chamber, in which roaring orange flames leap halfway up to the twenty-foot-high ceiling...
The Ogon Fox |
His eyes widen in horror as he first hears the wailing baby and the soft (at first) chanting...as Johann charges off, Ogon is quick to follow, fists clenched and bristling with lightning. When he reaches the room he maintains some distance (but not more than 30ft) and throws a bolt of lightning at the cultist not already engaged in melee with Johann.
