"Well met. Take a set, we were just taking stock of supplies. I am Ghorza Lightseeker, paladin of the Dawnflower. The red-haired woman is Aranthis, duel-wielder, blacksmith, engineer. The cloth wearing man with the bird is Pheonix, that's the man's name, caster, has a crossbow as well. Bird's name is Flitwing, apparently.

The blind old man is Arava...nish...shn... Aravashnia! Ha! Got it. Looks to have some experience in leadership and planning. Haven't been introduced to the rest of them, so you'll be learning as I do.

You missed all the action. We've been having a grand time killing maggots and roaches!

Regardless, throw your things into the pot and well see what we have, and decide how long to make it last.

And perhaps we might grab your name and skills while we're at it. And speaking of names' , Ghorza turns to Aravashnia, 'you mind if I call you Vash? I know there are those that pride their names too much to respond to nicknames, but you have to admit your name is a bit of a mouthful. No offense intended."

Ghorza says with a smiling, sticking her hands up in a submissive manner.

The stranger took note of each of the party's names who were introduced, offering each a nod of acknowledgement. He gave her a strange look when she said they had been killing insects, until his gaze chanced over the roach bodies the party had let lie.

Thumping his chest, he announced, "I am Zogar, who will be Demonsbane, sometimes called Ten-Lives. The shaman may have been right about that." He glanced up at the darkness from which they had fallen, then shook his head and continued. "My skills lie in hunting down demon filth." He turned his head and spat. "I have traveled underground before. May be I can find water for us, or even food, if you are not too picky." He smirked at the dead roaches. "I will fight to defend you."

Tossing back his long black hair, Zogar stepped into the circle of the party as though he had always belonged there, towering over everyone but Ghorza. Huge muscles flexed with every move he made; there didn't seem to be an ounce of fat on him. "I carry food enough to feed one for five days, and a handful of sunrods, which will not serve for long here. I have water, and I have rope; I do not think the rest of what I possess is of interest to you."

"You travel light, you might just be as hardy as you look. Ghorza joked.

I like to keep a range of things one me. Apart from my sword, shield and armor, along with a set of casual clothing made for explorer's, I have rations enough for a single person for 14 days, a full waterskin, bedroll and winter blanket, 50ft of silk rope and a grappling hook, tankard, and a whetstone' , she says holding up each item briefly as she pulled them out of / off her backpack. She smiled and held up a bar of soap. 'Soap, though I believe not near enough should we keep running into vermin and rummaging through debris. Might be best to save it for things like cleaning things that truly need be free of germs and grim. The sack is being used to carry what we found in the rubble' , she placed the soap on her bedroll, then pulling two separate strings out from around her neck, 'A signal whistle, and a silver symbol of my goddess, Sarenrae.' , then reaching into a small pouch on her belt, 'Flint and steel, and a small mirror." she said spinning the small, round mirror around on axis between her index fingers.

She leaned back and waited for the others to continue.

Zogar squatted and unslung his pack; he was so tall that the longbow strung over his back barely scraped the ground. "I have some small amount of things such as those you have mentioned," he said seriously. "But if we are to carry your weaklings back into the sunlight, they are of limited use. Perhaps you can use your bedroll to hoist the one with the broken leg, rather than those scraps," he suggested. "Your blind elder with the long name can be dragged on mine."

Zogar is such a charmer. LOL :P

"Weak they may be, they are victims of the the Storm King, as are we. Most in that square were civilians. If anything' , Ghorza look sadly over at the others, 'They were the strongest to have survived the attack and the fall, where so many others perished. In fact, Vash here only just lost his sight to the whip of that demon. Strength comes in many forms, not just big and muscled."

She looked at the torn bedroll over to the wood.

"If you are able, Zogar, we were planning on attempting to craft a crutch and splint out of the wood. Any expertise you could contribute would definitely be appreciated."

As you all sit, think, and take stock, it occurs to you that there is also a southerly passage leading east from the large cave you have just exited. The three survivors you have thus far rescued have the minimum provisions to keep themselves alive for about one week.

Human (Chelaxian)

Dunno if there's a knowledge roll to be made on the mushroom bat thinger, so feel free to roll that for me if I have the appropriate knowledge skill.

Phoenix introduces himself (and Flitwing) to the newcomer, and freely offers information on which items he has on his person.

"Well, then, shall we proceed? I believe we now possess stock of our inventory, as it were. I certainly hope we are not trapped here for long, but it appears that we have sufficient provisions to survive for at least several days."

The next time the group moves collectively, Phoenix asks Zogar the following question:

"When you introduced yourself, you made mention of a shaman in reference to your name. May I ask to what you were referring?"

Aranthis briefly looks back at her pack. "I believe I have five days worth of rations myself, my personal effects, and some other items like rope, torches and such. To be honest, I only had much of this because I just arrived in town yesterday. If this were tommorow, I'd likely have not had any of this, as I was looking to find a place to reside in Kenabres for a while." she says sheepishly.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Zogar, I imagine we'll need all the help we can get down here, and someone more familiar with caves and wilderness is certainly a boon," she says.

With that, she wipes her blades clean for the second time today and sheathes them.

Thinking for a moment, she suddenly looks as if she's remembered something important. "Oh, there were some silver dragon scales over there, Zogar" she exclaims, pointing at where they found them.

"They seem to be magic, you might want to grab one. A final gift from Terendelev it seems", she remarks sadly.

Zogar nodded thoughtfully to Ghorza. "You speak sense. Strength of spirit is as important as strength of body. The shaman has also said this. I meant no disrespect to your elder, however he lost his sight. It might simply be faster to carry him than force him to trip on the uneven stones as we walk." He moved over to pick through the wood, looking for useful pieces.

When Aranthis spoke to him, he raised his hand in thanks. "The dragon was a mighty ally. Her spirit will be with us always," he said, moving to take a scale himself. "A keepsake to remember her by."

Once they were moving, Zogar paused in his long strides to answer Phoenix. "Our shaman, Ukka, is our god-speaker. She knows the unknowable, and sees the unseen. She gives us our second name after consulting the spirits." He looked on Phoenix with pity. "There are no spirit-talkers here to give you your second name, but perhaps you will earn one with some mighty feat." And perhaps the dragon Terendelev will raise us out of here on her spirit-wings. But I must not take their hope from them.

You are unable to discern anything special about the amulet. The tunnel continues further to the east. There was another tunnel also leading east from the main cavern. The injured seem to be eager to move on.

Ghorza looks back down the tunnel they came.

"It looks as though we have cleared out the cavern behind us. We should move the others into here. Vash looks close to passing out so perhaps resting here for a time would be best. Better than leaving them in there with all those bodies."

Craft Crutches: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Not sure if crutches count as a very simple item or a typical item. Heres hoping I get high enough reagardless.

"I can't work this' , she drops the bits of wood on the ground in exasperation, Zogar, Eulalia, Aranthis. You all have some kind of experience in camping or survival or some other outdoors related thing. See if you can figure out how to get these damn sticks to stay together." She looks down at the torn bedroll.

Craft: Repair Bedroll: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11

"You think this is good enough?"

How much of the rope is left? I can't imagine I'd use a whole 10 feet of rope to stitch together a bedroll.

She sighs.

If I had wanted to be in a craft, I would've stayed at the church. she thought, her Orcish heritage making her more frustrated than she probably should've been.

"Better still, Zogar and I can go and carry one person each back here. Be faster than guiding them or having them hobble slowly back.

While we do that, Phoenix and Aranthis can go and look down the other passage that was leading off the main cavern.

Eulalia should accompany Zogar and myself in case we run into anything, and need time to put our quarry down and draw weapons.

Should Nix and Aranthis run into trouble themselves, send Flitwing to come get us' , she said, turning to look at the man and his companion, 'That is assuming it's intelligent and trained enough do such a thing. If not' , she pulls out the signal whistle that was hanging around her neck, 'we can resource to using this, though it may do more harm than good, should it attract more hostile creatures than we can deal with.

"Whatever the case maybe, I still propose we have the others rest here for a while, on beds and blankets instead of rocks. Maybe even start a fire, once it looks safe enough. It will allow those of use who are healthy and good enough to fight to search without having to worry about protecting everyone.

Decide quickly, because I'd like some help taking off my armor should we go with this plan, as I can carry more and move faster, and it would also be easier and more comfortable for all parties involved."

"Wouldn't carrying them get rather fatiguing if we're travelling more than a couple days? I suppose I can take a stab at getting a usable walking stick. Afterwards, I'll take Phoenix and go scout as you suggested."

Can I apply Survival, knowledge(engineering) or Craft(Weapons) to try and make a walking stick/crutch? If so:
Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Knowledge(Engineering): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Craft(Weapons): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Aranthis tries her hand at making a useful crutch for a bit. When she's done all she can, she turns to Phoenix and says "Ok, lets go take a look at that other cavern." Turning around, she begins walking back towards the main room and around, leading the way.

Given the luck we've been having so far, I'd better be prepared for some surprise or another. Aranthis sighs and draws her swords as the approach the other opening. "I wonder if there'll be more of those roaches in here." she asks Phoenix.

Ghorza's crutch appears quite usable until weight is put on it, luckily, Aranthis intervenes and makes the necessary repairs as well as crafting a mate. With these modest successes, your cripple is now able to move at almost full speed!

"Many thanks!" Anevia smiles, "I would not have been able to do so well on my own. Since I am so much slower anyhow, I believe I would be in the best position to lead our elven friend, along with our more . . . boorish companion. I bet we can almost keep up with you having to clear the spaces as we go. I have heard rumors of these tunnels, long ago when I was a child. I always thought them faerie stories meant to scare the wayward back on to the path of righteousness. If the stories can be believed, and I pray to Shelyn that they can be, all tunnels lead to the surface."

Human (Chelaxian)

Phoenix offers Aranthis an attempt at a comforting smile. "With our current run of wonderful luck, I would bet we find some other form of giant insect. Giant ants, perhaps?"

Nix pauses to look through the opening, casting his orbs of light forward to illuminate the area beyond.

"Now for the question worth a thousand gold: which way to the surface? And if you say, 'up,' you're staying here to rot with the roaches."

Zogar gave Ghorza a nod of respect. "Your plan is good. If we are careful and thorough, nothing should disturb the... wounded while we explore. As Anevia has said, they can follow more slowly."

"South or east, it is the same. All tunnels lead to the surface. Ha!" Zogar laughed - not mockingly, but as if he'd just told a really good joke. He seemed puzzled when not everyone joined in. "Let us carry the wounded to your campsite." But before moving in their direction, he peered curiously into the opening Phoenix had sent his lights into.

She thinks to herself for a bit.

Nothing of consequence impedes your progress back around to the southern route. As you pass the center of the central cavern, you notice a backpack that seems to have fallen from far above, and got itself caught up on a bit of rubble about twenty feet above the ground. Digging out her silver hammer pendant and holding it up to the light, Aranthis continues her explanation. "It's true that I'm a blacksmith like my father and grandfather before me. My family, however, has been strong believers in the teachings of Torag, and hence learning of the wonders of his many creations is important to me."

"We had quite a variety of books in our house, on various subjects including engineering. I spent many evenings reading about structures, foundations, masonry, and the like when I wasn't learning at the forge."

She paused for a moment, thinking fondly of home. I wonder when I'll have a chance to see home again. The way things are going, I bet I'll have some stories that even Grandfather will find hard to believe!

Zogar set down his burden(? not sure if he's carrying Vash here? I'm a bit confused about what happened with the whole 'move them to the camp' thing - did that already happen?) and drew his whopping greatsword. "Careful - there is a viper there, among the rocks." He approached it warily, preparing to chop it in half.

Knowledge: nature, just in case: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
greatsword power attack/furious focus: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 5) + 6 = 17

An explosion of sound shatters the stillness as the poor viper explodes into red mist and memory.

They are following you at a decent distance, keeping quiet and letting you lead the way. The survivors can move themselves now that crèches have been provided.

As Ghorza retrieves the pack, Aranthis continues her conversation with Zogar. "Well given how you've described it, I don't think I've done anything to merit a second name yet... but I hope to craft a pair of blades whose legacy will last long after I'm gone. If I do, then maybe the names the blades earn will serve the purpose of a second name?"

After they've gone over the contents of the pack, Aranthis leads the way into the next room. When Zogar and Ghorza point out the viper amongst the piles of boulders, she starts to jump into action. As she begins to draw her blades again, she watches Zogar charge the serpent and kill it in a single strike.

"Quite an impressive strike, the poor serpent didn't know what was coming," she says smiling as she catches up to Zogar with the others. "Perhaps I can craft you a greatsword worthy of your second name one day as well!"

Zogar nodded seriously. "I thought perhaps you had earned one for your wisdom - there are many paths that lead to a second name. But to forge great swords is a worthy goal. If they pass into legend, forever will you be known as the Forger of Legends."

After chopping apart the viper, his serious demeanor was temporarily relieved by a fierce grin at her words. "A mighty greatsword for slaying demons? I would summon my shaman here to grant you a second name for that!"

He picked up the headless remains of the snake. "Fine eating for those trapped so far underground. Fresh meat will stretch our rations a bit farther."

Human (Chelaxian)

Welp, may as well try to get buddy-buddy with the NPCs.

Phoenix cast a considering glance at the large Kellid. The man had swiftly, easily, and efficiently perceived a threat and dispatched it before Nix had even a chance to react.

Phoenix walked over to the pair of injured humans - and Horgus - and quirked a thumb in Zogar's direction.

"Looks like I won't be needed in front with Zogar Vipersbane at the helm. Did you see what he did to that viper?" Phoenix said, then realized his carelessness. "...Ah, er, s-sorry, Aravashnial," Phoenix stuttered, making a small bow to hid his red face before realizing that the other wizard could not see such a gesture.

The blind wizard smiles, "No reason to be sorry, I wish I could have seen what he did. I did take note of the rather loud clang."

Hogar begins to whine, "We are all going to die down here. I just know it. Maybe we could at least rest a while? No dense dying exhausted and ugly. Can't we please clean up? My wounds are aching oh so badly. We need rest."

It occurs to you it has been less than an hour before you began.

Human (Chelaxian)

"I fully intend to die exhausted and ugly. When I am tired and exhausted of life and the passage of time has robbed me of my intense natural beauty," Phoenix said, making a dramatic flick of his fingers through his graying hair, "then I will die. Perhaps in seventy years or so."

Phoenix grinned wolfishly at Horgus. "Until then, I have no intention of dying. Do you truly believe we have no chance of escaping with our lives? Do you value your own life so low that you are so quick to write it off?"

Phoenix is going to chatter at Horgus for a bit in an effort to Influence Attitude. Last thing we need is an upset fellow when demons are about.

"I've not eaten snake before, that will be... interesting. Aranthis says with a look that says she's not entirely convinced it's edible. "Stretching our rations out is certainly important though, since we don't know how far we'll have to go to get back to the surface." she adds quickly.

Attempting to help convince Horgus to continue on, Aranthis speaks up. "Listen to Phoenix, we'll make it out of here if we don't give up," she says in an upbeat tone, her naive optimism shining through.

Last we left off: You have fallen into a cavern deep underground. There appears to be but one real option, head for the surface. Thus far, you have learned that the underground is chock full of vermin of various species, but have found clues to the existence of other, more sentient races, mainly in the form of a brooch. You also have each found one magical scale from the dying silver dragon who was so kind as to save you all (please let me know which you took). Your three companions are healthy. You can heal the wounded woman to get her leg back to full functioning. You cannot restore the sight to the blind man, and the most irritating, Horgus, is more or less fully healthy and fine. He just whines a lot.

A small fire and some patience later, and you all have lovely snake on a stick, courtesy of Zogar. More importantly, the three followers seem to be in better spirits, swapping small bits of story with you all as you enjoy the hastily prepared meal.

Anevia begins by asking Aravashnial to share what he might know of these caves. Happy to have something to donate to the party, Aravashnial seizes the opportunity with both hands.

"All kinds come to the city of Kenabres. Back in the beginning, even more came. Unfortunately for some, or perhaps fortunately for some. . ." the blind man looks momentarily confused, then carries on, "[b]At any rate, this near the world wound, all manner of defects creep into the blood. Some by sorcery, some willing, and some just pop up. At any rate, these strange children, gods bless them, they were not overly welcome, as I am sure you can imagine. Strange scaled or horned children, born in a place like this? They were doomed before they even let out their first cry. Most of these unfortunates were slain immediately by overzealous or fearful family members. Who wants to be known as the family who births demons? Certainly no one near Kenabres, that much is sure. For generations upon generations, those not killed were secreted away to caves and caverns deep under the city. I cannot see to make sure, but if I had to guess, I would bet that is where we are. We are in the caves of the long forgotten. Although we don't wage war on those banished down into the black miles below our magnificent city, I would wager that not too many of them are keen of having been disposed of so callously. They probably don't see the kindness that is their existence. I hope some realize the courage it took to forsake them down here rather than kill them on sight, but I would not count on it."

Zogar grunted, tossing the bones of his bit of snake into the fire. "If these demon-children have grown to seek our deaths, the kindness of their lives will be cut short," he growled. "If they have wisdom, they will let us pass in peace."

He looked around at the others, Horgas in particular. "The time for moving on has come, if we are to feel sunlight on our faces once more."

Roll for scale... if I'm allowed to have one, since I neglected to pick one up thinking that there was only two (as in either side of a scale (libra))
Scale: 1d2 ⇒ 2 so, resistance... *raspberries* Hey Aranthis, wanna trade? I will throw in a shiny whistle! lol

"To grow up in such a place... Judged guilty of nothing but bearing the effects of the world around them too obviously."

Ghorza tightened her fists, looking at the ground. This cord struck close to home.

"To have never seen the sun, the clouds, the sky. Felt the rain on their face, or grass under their feet."

This isn't right.

She nodded to herself and raised her head in conviction.

"Sarenrae guided me back from the brink of death as a child. She reached out to me and stopped a vengeful demon from dragging me into the abyss. She pauses and looks around at the group before fixing her gaze on the fire. "They are innocents. Cast down here no more willingly than you or I. Should we encounter any of them, no matter what reception we receive, I will do my best to save them. To bring them out of the darkness and into the light!' Ghorza stands and unsheathes her scimitar, the blade mirroring the fire. "I swear to my goddess, Sarenrae the Dawnflower, the Everlight, that I will return these lost children to her warm embrace. I will show these people Her compassion and that everyone can find redemption and acceptance among her faithful!'

Ghorza sheathes her weapon, beaming.

"At first I was frustrated at my being here instead of fighting out in the Crusade. I wanted the honor that came from slaying demons, and the feeling that I was removing a little bit of evil from the world. I feel know that this has been Her work. That while guiding us out of this place, she wishes us to reach out to these people and remove the darkness that has bred in their hearts.

"There is no greater honor than saving one who is lost in darkness."

Ghorza is in noticably higher spirits as she slings her pack over her shoulder, now that she has found a divine calling in their situation.

"Let's be off then! Scouting ahead and clearing as before?"

Zogar looked doubtful as Ghorza claimed the demon-children to be innocents, but he gave a slight shrug and stood. "Their actions will speak for them," he rumbled. Touching the claw marks on his cheek, he added, "But it seems we share a past. Perhaps the hand of the gods can be seen in this by one wiser than I." He nodded respectfully.

I don't know if I got a magical scale, since I was the last to pick one up - maybe there were no more, if all of you previously took one? But just in case:
scale choice: 1d4 ⇒ 2 LOL! Not this again!
scale choice, try 2: 1d4 ⇒ 2 It seems we are destined to claim the same scale!
scale choice, try 3: 1d4 ⇒ 2 ...OK, I give up. If there's a spare scale, Zogar will claim it after you guys have claimed yours.

Human (Chelaxian)

I think you got the Scale of Disguise, Zogar, as I wound up with the Cloudwalking one.

The middle-aged wizard polished off his bit of snake with several quick bites, and nodded at Zogar as the Kellid expressed his take on the cursed cave dwellers. "Beings corrupted by the Abyss may well and truly be innocent of their original curse, but the fact remains that we do not know whether they remain..." Phoenix waved a hand as if searching for the correct phrase, "on an innocent path, shall we say."

"I am most certainly willing to try diplomacy over destruction, but we should be ready for the worst. 'A smart man may be able to talk his way out of a fight, but a wise man will have one hand on his sword.'" Phoenix said in a slightly deeper voice than his usual tones, as if quoting or reciting another.

"Aravashnial, do you know anything else about these...Forgotten Ones? Are they organized, how do they treat surface dwellers, that sort of thing?"
