--Rydwyrna – Aldelday, 19 Laureoth, 146 R.R.--
Summer wanes, and the market streets in Rydwyrna have been full to overflowing for weeks. Anything a person could want to buy, or steal, is hawked by vendors along Republic Way, or in the tent bazaars that always pop up on the grassy acres inside the wall in districts one, two, ten and twelve. The capital of the Republic of Byrthelm, like the Republic itself, flourishes with prosperity and, for the most part, peace. Though the border villages still deal with occasional skirmishes with the Highlanders and Elves, orc raids are far more prevalent, and troublesome, but that’s nothing new either. The Orders have plenty of soldiers to take care of such things. Just yesterday you watched one of the famed Hippogriff Ranger squadrons take flight off of the tower of the Order of the Wild. Such is the way in Rydwryna, there is a little bit of adventure everywhere, but it isn’t the adventure in the city that has piqued your curiosity of late. While passing through the sea of people near the Midvale Market tents you overheard rumors of a strange happening in the province, animals dying in their sleep, young, in the prime of their lives, and with no wounds or marks to give reason for their deaths. Commoners are exaggerators, though, and you put little stock in such gossip. What you do put stock in is Republic silver, and when you saw the notice placed on one of the senate’s official news posting boards: Able bodied adventurers sought by Senator Akassa. Rich reward offered for service. it required you take notice. The senate posts decrees and notices of tax collection on the boards all the time, but rarely do they call out for adventurers to do their questing, that’s what the Orders are supposed to do. What could cause Akassa, the young, and, by all accounts beautiful, senator from Midvale to seek outside the Orders for capable men and women? The notice said: For more information come to the common room of The Black Pegasus Inn on the evening of the 19th.
And so, here you are, the Black Pegasus is one of the ritzier of Rydwyrna’s inns, with no less than two-thousand square feet of common space. Sitting just outside the wall of Castle Redwood, it caters to a noble clientele, but today it’s full of all manner of thugs and thieves, warriors and wizards. It’s clear the owner had an inkling things would be busy, as he has a full complement of well-dressed, in that classy sultry way, barmaids and barmen moving to and fro taking orders and keeping tankards full. The house special is the honey mead, hmmm, with honey harvested in Blueblossom Haven a pastoral farming community from Midvale. That can’t be a coincidence. Twilight has yet to settle on the city, and it is apparent that just about everyone in the place is eager for more information about this “rich reward for service.” As of yet though, no official spokesperson has made themselves known. Perhaps a drink will help pass the time?
I wanted there to be opportunity for people to “get in character” here, with a bit of social interaction, at your whims of course. If you’d rather not partake of the camaraderie, that’s fine too, but if you wouldn’t mind posting something with a bit of narrative description of your character, I’d appreciate it. Do they sit in the corner sipping ale keeping eyes on all the goings on? Do they approach others to seek out any new tidbits they may have picked up? Look for a bard to entertain them with a ditty? Perhaps they are a bard, and they want to see if the owner wouldn’t mind letting them play a song or two for the good patrons while they wait, and if silver coins come floating around as tips, all the better eh?! Take your character into the narrative however you feel comfortable.
Nikeisha |
Under normal circumstances, Nikeisha wouldn't even consider going into such a fancy bar. She knew half a dozen places she could get two meals, and evenings drinks and a room to sleep for what a mug of mead would likely cost in a place like this, all because it came in a fancy mug and had the right name on the bottle.
And of course there was the issue that, even with her relative newfound wealth, she was hardly dressed for such a place or spoke with the right accent and words to be one of the usual clientele. She glanced down at her feet, bare but for the anklets and rings she wore. True, her skirt was long enough that most people would never notice, but the kind of people who ran these places were snooty enough to spot it by the sound on the hardwood floor. The shiny, waxed hardwood floors she'd likely leave footprints on...
But this was where the job was supposed to be acquired, and 'rich reward for service' had potential. Potential wouldn't be enough, usually - Nikeisha had a decent amount of gold saved up if she needed it, but more would be a lot more useful, and the name of Senator Akassa made it certainly more likely that the reward would be of use or interest. Maybe something more useful or interesting than gold...
The Warlock stepped inside the bar and padded to the bar, staff clicking against the floor as she walked, and looked around at the oddities on display. It seemed like anyone who could hold a knife or cast a cantrip was here, which was hardly shocking, but she suspected that meant there was going to be some kind of test to whittle people down.
She ordered a mug of mead with a tot of whisky in it and a plate of food - roast meats thinly sliced, roast potatoes, some veg and gravy. If she was going to be here might as well enjoy it.
Baen "The Brave" Cobbleson |
Baen had shown up early. At least, he had thought it would be early, but he'd been beaten there by 3 swordsman, 2 mages of some sort, and a dwarf wearing nothing but studded leather pants and decorative iron beard adornments.
He himself was a young man, lean but tough, and his skin darkened from being outside in the sun often. His hair is black, cut short but not in any particular fashion other than 'out of the way'. His eyes are a warm brown, and though his chin was strong and he would be considered quite handsome by many, there were signs in his appearance that he had grown up without enough food as a child. He's moved up in the world since then, obviously, as he can afford real armor and weapons, though all of them are purely functional and have little to do with looking pretty. Still, he manages to put it all together into a charismatic package. He does have a fine blue cloak, something that does look new and well-cared for.
At first, he balked as things got busy. But the more that people looked at him as one of the other adventurers, the more his confidence came back. They couldn't tell how inexperienced he was. They wouldn't know that he's just a village cobbler-turned adventurer. He had found a seat against the center of the back wall of the main room of the tavern, and carefully strung the bow for his Viol. He was certain there would be 'professional' entertainment later when it started getting dark, so he wanted to get a chance to do something to relax a bit.
To whatever barmaid or barkeep that he can speak to first, he asks "Do you mind if I practice a bit, at least until your official entertainment shows up for the night?"
There was no music mentioned in the description so I figure I'll ply my bardic trade.
Performance: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
His music isn't perfect, but it's definitely not terrible either. It's obvious his heart's into it, and the music selection and tone are both excellent.
MendedWall12 |
Baen's question garners a look from the barmaid he asked, to a tall stout man behind the bar. The mustached barkeep gives her a nod, and then goes back to filling a stoneware tankard from the mead tap. She nods at Baen, and say, "Aye, go ahead," and nods toward the dais where he can play.
After several songs, everyone watches as the bard picks up the few coins, mostly copper, thrown on the dais in appreciation for his work, and then heads to the long, shellacked, oak bar, a thirty foot monstrosity of lumber that is all one continuous piece. It is little things like this that separate The Black Pegasus from the inns and taverns that cater to the general populous, but it makes no matter tonight. Everyone here waits for one thing, Senator Akassa and her promise of rich reward. No doubt the senator is embroiled in discourse with colleagues and advocates. Even though the legislative session doesn't start for two months, being a senator of the Byrthelm Republic requires work year round. Surely she must arrive soon, though, or let this crowd turn raucous, and perhaps worse...
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
Hack steps into the Black Pegasus before most. There appear to be a few regulars who immediately take notice of the impressive Highlander. Hack stands 6 and one half feet tall, and a Great Axe is sheathed through a leather strap on his back. Two hand axes also appear on his waist. His long unkept hair falls to his shoulders. His studded leather armor leaves his arms exposed, displaying bulging biceps.
He saunters to the bar and takes a seat to order the honey mead being offered from Midvale, no doubt by the Senator seeking the services of adventurers like Hack.
So, barkeep. When is the bosslady showin' to tell us about the task?
Hack's arms and knuckles are scarred. It is obvious that he has been in many scrapes. He chugs the first mead, and belches loudly.
Brrrrrrrpppp...that's not half bad. I'll have another, if ya will.
He listens to the blue-coated man play.
This may be the type of fella I can have create sagas of my deeds.
When The man comes to the bar after playing, Hack stands and moves in his direction. He sits next to Baen, and offers his massive hand to the performer.
Hack Corchran's the name. Good playin' there, friend. What do they call ya?
Baen "The Brave" Cobbleson |
Baen takes the man's hand and shakes it, making an effort not to wince at his outclassed grip strength. God, this man's huge.
"I'm Baen. Around Westwatch they call me Baen the Brave, though." he pats the Viol leaning against his leg (It's somewhere between a violin and a cello in size, so it's not a small instrument). "Have had an ear for music most of my life, but Adventure's what I hear playing my tune."
Nikeisha |
Nikesha very carefully did not wave her hand in front of her nose or even wrinkle it as the Highlander - Hack, he introduced himself as - let rip with a belch that smelled depressingly of her own drink and the contents of his stomach. She did, however, sureptitiously push the mug aside. She no longer had the stomach for alcohol, let alone mead.
"The big fella speaks true, it must be said," she added as she listened to the conversation. It was hard not to hear two or three with everyone crammed into this place. "But you speak truer. A little adventure, a little reward and a little fun sound better. Mind, wouldn't say no to relaxing to a fine beat after. Never learned an instrument myself, but..."
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
Who knows? Mahap this Senator will choose us together.
Hack stares at Nikesha.
C'mon down and join us, lass. My, my, yer a pretty one. What's yer name, then?
Nikeisha |
Nikesha raised an eyebrow at the comment. "Yeah, I am." Well, at least he wasn't actually leering or drooling. She'd had both before. Staring wasn't so bad. Well...so long as he kept his eyes off certain attributes, at least.
And if he tried to do more she'd explain to him it was impolite to stare at a woman. Hellish Rebuke was considered somewhat over the top if someone grabbed your behind, but...
"Name's Nikeisha. And if you can hit things as well as those muscles say you can, I wouldn't mind working with you." Or if he could match the strength of that belch...
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
Pleased to meet ya, Nikeisha. Aye, me and my Axe have felled many, but the future sagas of Baen are sure to tell of many more if we travel together.
He throws his head back and laughs heartily.
Nikeisha |
Considering this for a moment, Nikeisha said, "Race ya?" Tapping her staff on the ground once and muttering a word, the abandoned mug of mead puffed a cloud of purple smoke. It was, technically, an illusion...but it was a fun one.
Not that every solution required or needed violence. It wasn't always the best answer. But when it was, she'd stack her magic up against Hack's muscles.
Tavir Nethuani |
Tavir laughed good naturedly as the man he was listening to finished his joke, then made polite excuses to those around him and stepped away. As soon as he had his back turned his expression fell to one of mild annoyance. So far he hadn’t learned anything even remotely useful just gossiping around the tavern. Tavir had never been to the Black Pegasus before. It was a bit more upscale than the establishments he could afford to frequent unfortunately. Something that he guessed was true for most of the current clientele. That was a part of what made it so curious that they would all be openly called here by the Senator. The notices posed around town provided next to nothing to go on and unfortunately it appeared there was no one in the know at the Black Pegasus right that moment.
When he heard some music begin to play he immediately shifted his attention to it. He moved over and found a couple of people already speaking to the man playing. While they spoke, he turned his attention to the instrument itself. It was a rather large piece, it looked well made. He just overheard the introductions and when the giant of a man turned his attention to the young woman who had wandered over as well Tavir took the opportunity to address the musician.
“You’re very skilled Baen the Brave. I wish I had been blessed with talent at the strings, such a refined set of instruments. I dare say you would fit right in at the Black Pegasus as regular entertainment. But I’m being rude, I overheard your name and did not provide my own,” he said slipping into a formal bow, “Tavir Nethuani, a fellow lover of the arts.”
“And a bit of adventure would not go amiss either,” he said pitching his voice towards the man and woman who were still nearby.
"I don’t suppose anyone here has any more of an idea what exactly the Senator might have in store for whoever she chooses to undertake her little tasks?” he asked, turning up the charm on his smile a little more than he strictly felt.
Jun Valanthe |
The half-elven man descended down the stairs from the upper floors where rooms for rent were located. He was dressed in an exquisite light blue kimono with a high collar and patterns of cranes in flight around it. The bluish-white color matched both his hair and eyes, and the only thing that broke the smooth form of his robe was the pair of swords belted at his side, a long and short blade. After inquiring something discretely of one of the barmaids (who blushed and nodded, then pointed at the longtable in the center) the man pulled his still sheathed longblade out of his belt and leaned it against the table next to him.
"Greetings. I have been informed that you are all here to take up the senator's offer of employment?"
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
And adventure is what we're sure to find, Tavir, is it? Another to join Baen in his compilation of sagas to tell of oir exploits! I am Hack Corchran, and this beautiful lass is Nikeisha. Be careful though, she is tricky as well as beautiful.
He sizes up the well-fashioned man with the long sword as he enters the room from upstairs.
We are all here to take up the call to arms, friend. That pig-sticker ya have there is a fine weapon. How are ya at weildin' it? What can we call ya?
Bellaluna 'Bella' Liaqirelle |
Seeing the place seems to be of a higher class, Luna is pleased as she hopes to not be surrounded by a bunch of stinking drunks. When she walks in and sees the gathering crowd her hopes are are quickly dashed to pieces as she realizes every kind of low-life is in here looking to make a quick silver.
All the tables seem to be occupied so she heads to the bar, and is amused to see a human woman who obviously fancies herself to be some sort of adventurer by the looks of her attire. Bella thinks, But a long skirt? Really? That would just get in my way. But since she is a female who appears to be possibly being harassed by a bunch of males, Luna will approach.
People may notice a female Elf approaching this little group. She wears simple pants and a tunic which remind you of the forest due to their green hues and leafy patterns. The only weapon you see is a shortbow on her back, but oddly enough she has some sort of ... bandolier? across her torso which has 5 flasks of what appears to be oil? She is of average height, with black hair and when you look, she has the most greenest eyes you have ever seen! She is obviously healthy and strong, though nothing like the hulking man. Her skin is well tanned from spending most of her time outdoors. She is prettier than the average woman, but certainly no looker like the other woman. An observant person will notice her hands are callused and obviously used to rough treatment. She wears simple boots on her feet, but they look well travelled as do all her clothes.
Looking directly at Nikeisha, "Young woman, if these ruffians" as she turns and looks over the rest of the group, "are giving you any trouble, you just let me know. The name is Bellaluna Liaqirelle, but you may call me Luna. May I inquire what you are called?"
By the way, thinking of my future plans for her, I decided Luna did make a lot more sense! Besides, Bella is Spanish for beautiful woman, and she's not that good looking, so. Luna I would prefer. EDIT: Rats! That was my 11th post and so I can't edit my profile name! Oh well, Bella or Luna, whichever.
Ashrie VanShorn |
Upon hearing Jun make his proclamation, Ashrie steps forward from the corner of the room he had taken up residence in. A small, and rather frail looking being, Ashrie would be considered little more then a child amongst his Elven brethren. Wearing some tattered clothing, a mix of brown and tan cloths, hastily woven together to fashion something permissible for public life, and a dark brown cloak made out of a material similar to burlap, Ashrie is a bit of an odd looking fellow to say the least. Perhaps his most discernible feature are his eyes, set deep into his face, and rimmed with a dark bluish-black color give off the idea that he may not have had a good nights sleep in days.
Walking up to Jun from behind, Ashrie extends his right hand and gives three tugs on the fine kimono before speaking up:
"Ummm, I'm here to make some money. It's been a while since I last had a real good meal and ummmm..... Yea, I'd like to make some money."
Ashrie ends his comment with a wry smile, but catching a glare from Jun immediately retracts his hand from the kimono leaving a smudge on the garment where the dirt on his hand had stained it. Inwardly, Ashrie begins to think this may have been a bad idea.
Baen "The Brave" Cobbleson |
This is what I get for going to bed early! :D
Baen watches the conversation, replying to anyone's questions or statements when appropriate and is just grinning at what looks like a good until the elven lady shows up. "Ma'am, I know what a ruffian looks like, and I am not it. Though I understand your desire to protect the lady, she's here for the same reason you are, so I'm sure she can take care of herself." He hasn't lost his cheer, despite the mild rebuke.
"Please, have a seat, get a drink. Let's hear what the senator has to say and most importantly, try and be friends, yeah?"
Bellaluna 'Bella' Liaqirelle |
Seeing the smallish Elf male and how dirty and unkempt he looks, Luna can't help but get a somewhat disgusted look on her face, "Please, I will pay for it if you will but get a good bath sir! And I may even be willing to get you a room in an inn so you can get a good night's sleep as well." And then turning her attention back to the man, who at least spoke politely and says he is not a ruffian, "Pardon me sir, I meant no offense. I have been on the road for some time only recently arriving here in Rydwyrna and most of the human males (said in an obviously demeaning tone) that I have met on the road were ruffians if not worse! You at least seem to have some polite manners to you. Very well, I will accept your invitation to sit and drink while we wait for the news. As far as friends? That shall have to wait and see what comes, though I can certainly be polite in the meantime as long as the present company remains so." Turning back to Nikeisha, "Young lady, are you okay?"
People may notice, despite the dust of the road she looks clean, and she has a very nice smell about her.
Nikeisha |
Nikeisha grinned at the the Elven lady. "I'm fine, but a thank you for the inquiry. As these ruffians have already surmised, I can take of meself in a pinch. But it's nice to be asked, Lady Bellaluna. Gotta admit, I'm used to ruffians. The key with them is to remember they have there uses." A barrier to swords, usually. She had no fondness to being stabbed, and burning people after the fact, while a wonderful lesson, did not make the wound hurt less.
"A bath does sound nice, though. I can use a spell to warm it to just the right temperature, and keep it there." Baths may not have been a big part of her youth, but unlike shoes they were a luxury she had quickly learned to enjoy.
She nodded to the Elf Wizard. "Money would be nice, but I'd settle for other things. The right magic item, maybe, or certain favours. Goods, gems, special training...I can think of a few things the Councillor's station would get faster than shiny silver or golden coin, and while I fancy a few things that go 'clink!' I wouldn't mind some unusual payments too."
Ashrie VanShorn |
Looking between the two women a bit overwhelmed, Ashrie replies:
To Bella: Geez, ya that'd be great! A room and a bath, been a while since I've had either of those. I'd really appreciate it! He flashes her a boyish grin, and extends his still grimy hand to shake yours.
And then to Nikeisha: If she's getting me a room, I don't care what they're paying now, so long as the work isn't too hard. By the way, you're very pretty, don't know if anyone's told ya that!" Ashrie says the last bit in a way that betrays his age; less sexual aggression, more boyish enthusiasm.
Nikeisha |
Snorting a small laugh, Nikeisha said, "Yeah, actually. Tonight seems to be a night of compliments for me." She grinned at Hack with a nod. "I mean, I am very pretty, but it's interesting to hear." And so often, it was hard to not be flattered by it.
Looking at Bellaluna and Baen she added, "Are you two going to tell me I'm pretty as well? Might as well try and get a full set for the evening."

--Rydwyrna – Aldelday, 19 Laureoth, 146 R.R.—
Friendly conversations happen all throughout The Black Pegasus. New acquaintances are made, friendships are formed, and, for the sake of promised influence and wealth, diverse races work to set aside their prejudices. Which is all fine and good, while patience abounds, but as the night wears on, well past twilight, well past evening, into the dark of night, the innkeeper and his staff are forced to break up more than one brawl, kicking out thugs that will no longer have the chance to garner Senator Akassa’s favor. Patience wears thin, and even those that have found good company to keep, and found that the honey-mead is, indeed, a surpassing good beverage, start to wonder whether the whole affair is some prankster’s sick joke. Then it happens. A gust of warm breeze flies in guttering more than one candle in the Pegasus’ expensive, high-ceiling hung, black-iron wrought chandelier. When the thick oak and iron double doors of the establishment swing open the entourage that enters makes it very clear that the senator from Midvale province has arrived. Swordbrothers, resplendent in gleaming half-plate, with the emblem of the Order of the Sword engraved in gold on their breastplates, march in two by two. Each is armored exactly as the other, closed visored helmets with and gauntleted fists holding tightly to wickedly sharp steel glaives. They are part of the Senate Guard, the elite of the elite. Tales abound about their tenacity and ferocity during the Nine-Years war, and more than one Highlander with a grudge-full memory bridles a bit as they enter. They set up a line, with military precision, in front of the dais where before a bard played music to entertain. Then, the line parts, slightly, and standing on a wooden box, you see her.
The whispers of her beauty are not wrong. Tall, lean, yet curvaceous, with an hourglass figure, ample of flesh in those areas that lusty men most desire, and thin in all those places that women envy. Her cyan dress is of samite and silk, trimmed in cloth of silver, cut low to show her bosom, on which rests the bottom length of the raven-black ringlets of her hair. Along her right leg the dress is slit, from ankle to just below the hip, both to allow movement, and certainly to entice the eye with her slender, shapely, clean-shaven legs. Shoes of sueded leather, blue, with lacing straps of intertwining blue and silver fabric that go just below the knee, grace her feet and lower legs, exposing azure painted toenails, a color that matches her eyes almost perfectly. For jewelry she wears only one silver bangle on each wrist, and a gossamer silver tiara tucked deep into the curls of her dark-black hair. The room, silent already for the entrance of her warrior entourage, goes even more silent, if such a thing were possible. And so she speaks, moving her plump and pouty lips with the practiced ease of a woman who must keep the attention of the Republic Senate with her every word.
”I am heartened by the outpouring of support you have all shown by your presence here tonight. That you care so much about the Republic, and the province of Midvale, does my heart good to see.” She pauses for a moment, stepping down from her box, between her flanking guardsman, dragging a hand along the lion-sculpted maw of his pauldron as she steps to the fore. ”I am sure you all have many questions, and I wish I had time to sit and answer them all, but there is little time, and every moment that passes has the potential for more calamity.” Once again she pauses, but only to gather breath, obviously in preparation for a length of speech. ”I received a bluejay, bearing message from one of our Rangers at the outpost at Briarhill, yesterday. It was to give new information about a travesty that has befallen the town across the river, Blueblossom Haven, the pride of Midvale. Perhaps some of you have heard of the strange happenings there of late? Dying animals, found among the herds in the morning. No mark, no blood lost, just dead. For the herders there, such a thing is not unheard of, and cattle that die before their time can still be slaughtered and sold, but when one becomes two, and two becomes five, with no answers as to a cause, the people begin to whisper of dark magic, of unknown disease, and then, then the dead lie dead, untouched for fear of contagion of whatever force has claimed them.” Another pause, and this time, you see the beautiful raven-haired senator chewing on some emotional content. ”Our esteemed Seneschal, has told me that with the wildfires raging on the western edge of the Mourning Forest, and the increase in orc raids to the north, there are no Order soldiers to spare, to see to [i]my mystery.[i]” It is impossible not to feel the venom dripping in her words. ”Therefore I turn to the Republic, the foundation on which we have built this realm, good free folk, working to help each other. I turn to you.” She looks through the crowd for longer than a moment, and when her sea-blue eyes meet your own you feel a jolt of electricity surge through your body. You. Yes, you! The electricity coursing through you says. You must help me.
She picks up speech again. ”The bird I received from the Briarhill Ranger rent my heart in twain. For the bird’s message was that whatever is killing in Blueblossom Haven, is no longer targeting just herd animals. Two children…” She sputters for a moment, and you see her eyes well up, glistening with tears. But, she is quick to recover. ”My sister’s twin daughters were found dead in the morning, in the same manner as they have found the cattle.” She strolls back to the dais, back to the wooden box that will put her up so that she stands above everyone. ”And so I ask, so I beg of you, the free folk of Byrthelm, will you help my people? Will you help Midvale, and Blueblossom Haven to discover what evil lurks among them, and put an end to this senseless death?!” Immediately upon asking her question the crowd explodes in an uproar of affirmation. Huzzah! You hear among the crowd. Yes! To arms! In one place. For Midvale in another. For Byrthelm in still another. It is clear the crowd is empowered by her words. But the question remains. Are you? Does the plea of the enchanting Senator Akassa stir your blood to aid the common people? And if it does, to what end? She has mentioned no reward thus far, and now the crowd has descended into raucous conversation again. Some groups have already walked out bowing before the Senator as they go, already on their way to help. Dare you speak to a woman of Akassa’s stature and inquire further?
Role play it however you think your character would, aligning with the group you’ve begun to get to know, or individually. Senator Akassa has obviously not left, so there is, at least the possibility she would engage in further conversation, if you could find your way past her guardsmen of course. :D
Ashrie VanShorn |
Ashrie is enthralled by Akassa's story, and enraptured by her beauty, however at her mention of "dark magic" he shrinks back behind Shenkt trying to hide himself as much as possible from the Senator and her men.
He closes his eyes and and clenches his hands together, as small tremors run down his spine. He beings to wordlessly mouth a short prayer to Aldellion in an attempt to keep the monsters at bay.
Baen "The Brave" Cobbleson |
Baen is obviously entranced by the beauty and glamour of the senator and her cause just enforces his admiration of the lady. She's a good person. he realizes, the smile on his face is honest and from a belief of the possible good of humanity.
Excusing himself from the group, he makes his way to the dais.
"I have a few questions for the senator." Baen says respectfully. "As well as extend my condolences for the loss of her nieces. Losing family is hard, but the people of the republic are with her." he looks the man. "I'm Baen 'the brave', a hero of Silver Shoals, and of Westwatch. If I can lend my aid, I will do so."
Persuasion: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Nikeisha |
Shivering for a moment from the eye contact, and the strange feeling it had brought. She had pretty blue eyes, but they didn't usually make her feel all tingly, no matter how nice they were. She wondered if the Senator was a magic user of some kind, or it was simply some kind of personal charisma. Either way, it bared keeping in mind.
The mention of 'dark magic' was a little worrying. A lot of people thought the Pact Magic of Warlocks to be pretty dark, but Nikeisha's connection to the Archfey was usually seen as an exception. Usually. Some people would try and stab you for pretty much any reason.
Still, she noted that the Senator had failed to mention exactly what the reward was. While she wasn't over materialistic, she wasn't exactly patriotic either. On the other hand she could understand the loss of family. So she held her tongue, for now. "We should probably head to grab horses quick," she said to the others. "I know a good way to the stables. Once Baen has finished having a talk."
Jun Valanthe |
Earlier at Ashrie's approach:
"Certainly. I can't speak to the others here, but I would be more than happy to have your assistance. 'Those willing to seek gold find it; it is rarer for a man to seek gold in honest work' my honored father would say." He seems completely unphased by the dirt left on his kimono and in fact doesn't even seem to notice it.
Jun was about to offer to pay to clean the man up when Bellaluna makes her offer.
Now:
Jun also stands and says "Agreed. Master Baen and I have been moved by your story, and I would be willing to lend my blade to your cause as well. I am not of your country, but it is good to see that the nobility here cares for the plight of the common man."
Persuasion (cause why not?): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
Hack stands to his full height and moves slowly to the dais. He keeps his eyes on the guards who surely will notice his Highland heritage.
I'd like to offer my Axe to yer cause, lady.
Tavir Nethuani |
Tavir greets and introduces himself to Jun when the man walked up and smiled in reply to Hack Corchran’s eager inclusion of him into Baen’s “compilations of sagas”. Hack seemed a simple man but in a rather endearing way. Tavir had known several men like him when he lived on the streets and most often such men didn’t try so hard to be charming or kind to those around them. With his easy compliments and friendly banter Hack made it hard to find him objectionable. The same could not be said of the woman who approached them next. Tavir looked more at home in terms of dress than she did. His outfit was a carefully crafted nobles disguise which gave the impression that he had rather more wealth to his name than was strictly true. But what this Bellaluna lacked in fine clothing she more than made up for in haughty demeanor. She gave the impression of being the embodiment of what Tavir loathed about full blooded elves, so superior and eager to look down on those around them. Tavir found himself drumming his fingers on the underside of his arm, where he kept a knife hidden for easy drawing should it be necessary. He stopped himself, a gentle admonishment that he wasn’t out in the slums and in fine establishments like the Black Pegasus one didn’t answer insults with shed blood.
In stark contrast to the woman they were also approached by a male Elf who seemed downright timid compared to Bellaluna, that was interesting. He knew that some half-elves like himself acted like kicked dogs around other people but rarely was that the case with full blooded elves. Very interesting indeed. Bean seemed to be playing the good intermediary which Tavir realized he should make more an effort to do as well. So he put on a smile once again, forcing it up but not letting the effort of maintaining a good cheer show on his face—he was so skilled at these little deceptions that he could occasionally almost believe them. In response to Baen’s comment about getting a drink he said, “Here, here! Let us all have a drink and chat a bit while we wait.”
And so, he made small talk with the group as the day passed into the evening and then on into the dark of night. He never drank enough to grow bleary or tipsy but he was certainly considering it as the day darkened and the chevaliers and candles became the only solid sources of light in the Black Pegasus. It was beginning to look like some sick joke that drew everyone here. For the life of him Tavir couldn’t see the point. It certainly made a lot of people buy the honeyed mead but then he doubted that the Black Pegasus was hurting for funds, catering as it did to the upper class. He was about to order something stronger when the Senator and her entourage made their appearance.
He listened to her whole speech and when she seemed to cast her eyes out over the crowd there was just a moment where it seemed like she was personally imploring him, specifically, to help her in this endeavor. Tavir could see how a woman wielding this much charisma could do well as a Senator. It seemed she could wield words with as much familiarity as Hack seemed to carry that massive axe. Still perhaps it was because he was a bit drunk, but he found himself warming to her words. Not enough to throw himself along with them without first asking a few questions though. He walked up beside Baen and Jun.
“Pardon the intrusion honored Senator, but I did hope to ask something. You say the Order has nothing to contribute to this enterprise. Does that mean that the city itself is sponsoring this? Or perhaps just a personal favor for Midvale’s most beloved representative? I would hate to be seen stepping on any toes or interfering in a way that wasn’t wanted or anticipated you see,” Tavir said with an easy smile. Although he phrased it in the most diplomatic way possible to someone of the senator’s station it would be clear he was inquiring about rewards. Not that it needed to be monetary of course, though that would help. Even just an avowed favor from someone so influential would be a huge boon. But however they were to be paid, Tavir wanted to know whose pocket they were in.

Perhaps he's more drunk and less charming than he thought. >>
Bellaluna 'Bella' Liaqirelle |
Before the Senator arrives: Sensing that she may have 'ruffled some feathers' and realizing that she is going to need companions for her future endeavors, Luna decides she better try to smooth things over. "I apologize if I offended anyone. I'm afraid that I have spent all my life either in the royal courts or in my monastery where I trained as a monk, surrounded primarily by other Elves. And it has left me unprepared for how to interact properly with other people. I do feel sorry if I have behaved inappropriately. Please, forgive me and let us get to know each other a bit better, shall we? Maybe you could each tell me some of what your specialties are?"
Once the Senator has made her grand entrance:
Seeing the Senator in her luxurious, seductive, dress, Luna says, "Well, she is certainly beautiful and attractive to the male gender I am sure. She could almost seduce me!"
As she sits listening to the speech Luna gets slightly caught up in it, but after all it is not her nation. Luna could not help but notice, The guards seem quite impressive to look at, but, none of them seem to be paying attention behind them?! Typical of guards to always be looking forward! What if an assassin where to come out from some secret door behind her or teleport in behind her? There would be precious little protection for the great Senator then it seems?
As Luna continues listening to the speech though, she does seem somewhat enthralled by it, and at the mention of the loss of life and family members at that, she almost sheds a tear herself. When the Senator seems to look directly at her and ask for her help, she can't help but shout out, "I shall help!" and then suddenly she seems surprised at herself, not certain why she did that.
After the speech is over, Luna will step to the side of the rest of those who have gone forward to try to speak to the Senator and she will give a proper curtsy almost befitting of the royal court, but she will leave out minor details, such as proper hand movements/placements and the proper level of where her eyes look, that most would not even notice unless they have had the proper training. "M'Lady Akassa, Though this is not my nation, I wish to offer any help this Elf may provide you with in this time of great distress. May I make some inquiries into this matter that may help find a faster resolution if you please?"
By the way, I would think that any elves, and possibly half-elves, and others with a decent education, would recognize Luna's surname "Liaqirelle" as being the same as that of the Royal family. And considering the longevity of elves there is not likely to be any other families with the same surname that aren't somehow related to the Royal Family. If anybody wants to see there is a link to Luna's Heritage here, and in my tag-line and in Mended's World of Eafphqu, in the section on the "Elven 'King'dom" as well.
Any Circumstance bonus for the curtsy? Persuasion: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Akassa nods a greeting to each that approach, returning Luna's curtsy with a courtly curtsy of her own. When the well spoken half-elf stumbles a bit on his words, obviously more into his cups than his mouth was ready for, she giggles lightly, placing one slender hand over her mouth, revealing a before unseen ring of gold with a ring of blue topaz gems. "I welcome all of your assistance ladies," she nods to Luna and Nikeisha, "and gentleman." She gives a genuine smile and nod to Tavir, Shenkt, Jun and Baen. "Baen the brave is it? Hero of Westwatch you say? Might be that I have heard some stories of your heroics, your prowess will help greatly I'm sure. As to your question, sir," she says looking to Tavir, whose well-trained lips asked so diplomatically about possible monetary assistance. "You've nothing to fear, Byrthelm both officially recognizes and supports my efforts on behalf of my people. That Seneschal Diergarten is not willing to part with any of the Order Guard is more because she feels they are stretched thin with other matters, than because our cause is not important. I have instructed my chief of staff, Marketh, to provide a five gold coin deposit to any that offer their aid to Blueblossom Haven. Should you require money for supplies, you can find him tomorrow morning with our clerk in the receiving room of Redwood Castle. As with all such matters, Marketh will, of course, require that any who receive such funds sign a contract expressing their desire to use the funds as an earnest deposit for their help in Midvale. By all means, seek him out if those funds would help your travels to be safer and easier. In addition the mayor of Blueblossom, Camatil, has assured me that should anyone succeed in ridding their countryside of this plague, his generosity would overflow. You would, of course, have my gratitude as well." Then addressing Luna directly, she says, "Please, m'lady, make any and all inquiries into the matter as you find sufficient. Your noble character will lend great credence to our cause." The senator stands, hands folded restfully in front of her, looking at the mismatched group of adventurers, eyes honest and sincere, she awaits any further questions you may have.
Bellaluna 'Bella' Liaqirelle |
"M'Lady, how frequent have the killings been? And are they spread evenly through the entire area or do they seem to be more focused in one area in particular? Has anyone reported any signs of struggle near the bodies? And are there any other clues that may not have been mentioned?"
Eafphqu |
At Luna's barrage of questions, Akassa laughs just a little, smiling at her in a very motherly way. "My lady, your curiosity does you credit. Unfortunately those are questions better answered by people close to the situation. I can tell you this. From what Camatil has told me, everything started small, though not particularly localized, and has since spread, with no recognizable pattern of action, throughout the entire pasture country surrounding Blueblossom Haven. The Rangers messenger bird was brief, and blunt, as such messages must be. I'm afraid I do not even know the specific circumstances of Lillith and Bethyn's death." She fights back tears again at the mention of her neices, but then quickly continues. "So, I'm afraid more detailed answers will have to wait until you are in Blueblossom, and can talk with those who are experiencing it."
Jun Valanthe |
Jun secured his Tindaran longblade back into his belt, then pulled Baen aside and said "We should probably take what useful people as we can from the group arrayed here and head out to this Midvale as soon as possible. There are going to be a horde of people rummaging about, most likely destroying the evidence and making a great hassle for anyone they don't like. Truly, it will be a difficult time to be a Tiefling."
Jun reflects for a moment and then says "I think the people that were at our table this afternoon would make a decent group, do you not? It seems like several of them have the investigatory bent of mind, and we will likely need bruisers of all stripes before this is concluded. We should, however, determine that everyone is combat capable before we go dragging them into a situation they can not handle."
Bellaluna 'Bella' Liaqirelle |
"Pardon me again M'lady, not that I don't appreciate the generous offer of gold in advance, but what would be most helpful and expedient would be some mode of transportation to get us there faster than our poor feet can take us. I don't know about others, but I have no horse or any other method of getting there quickly. If it is not asking for too much, might it be possible to get some horses and gear on loan to get there faster? Or even better yet, if you could see your way clear to having someone teleport me there?" And then she looks towards the other adventurers gathered there and waves her hand to indicate them, "And perhaps these other adventurers who have offered their help would come along so that we may work together to solve this heinous mystery?"
Nikeisha |
"I'm happy to work together," Nikeisha said as she approached. It was a little worrying that the promise of reward was so vague, but given the promise of reward was so public it was going to be hard to back out of. Or to have it to be 'the reward was friendship all along' or something else out of a Bard's tale.
The murders sounded weird. Disease usually left a mark, and a lot of poisons had some symptons. Magic could do a lot of things, but kill without any chance to fight back or defend was not usually one of them unless the spellcaster exceptionally strong. It was also possible that a more physical means of murder was being used, one people hadn't spotted yet...a stilleto blade rammed through the nose or ear, the blood stopped up by cloth rammed deep into the orifice, might be missed if people didn't know where to look.
On the other hand, they needed to get there first. "I've never been outside the city. Does anyone know the best way to cross the river to Blueblossom Haven? In case teleportation isn't an option."
Ashrie VanShorn |
Having ignored the ongoing dialogue with the Senator, Ashrie manages to overhear Jun mention organizing a selection process for his group. In an attempt to avoid being left out, Ashrie leaves the shadow of Shenkt and moves nearer to Jun and Baen.
Uncertain as to how he might prove to be "combat capable" Ashrie stands as tall as he can possibly muster (he's much smaller and shorter then a normal High Elf) and attempts to puff his chest out some. He then proceeds to strike several different "nonchalant" poses in an attempt to look threatening.
Tavir Nethuani |
Tavir smiled and nodded his thanks to the Senator as she answered his question, cutting right to the point of his argument he was pleased to see that he hadn’t been too subtle to make sense nor too brash to offend. The sum offered was decent and as he thought she was willing to throw her name personally behind anyone who went out. Tavir needed some friends in high places. He had left some powerful people behind him and did not long for them to catch up to him before he was better prepared. In fact it might be good to get out of the city for a while, he’d spent entirely too much time in one place to be completely comfortable. When Jun suggested joining up Tavir nodded, “Yes I think that this group seems to represent a wide variety of people. Everyone seems resourceful to say the least.”
Tavir quirked an eyebrow at Bellaluna when she mentioned teleportation. It was clear that this elven maiden came from a very different background than he did. Tavir had investigated it, because it was beneficial to know how the wealthy spent their money. You couldn’t beat teleportation for speed or convenience but drawing a circle of teleportation cost rare chalks and materials totaling something like fifty gold pieces. If it was pumped into a permanent circle, then the drawing had to be reapplied every day for a year. That would cost an astronomical sum of 18,250 gold pieces. Those who wished to use such circles generally paid handsomely for the privilege. Someone like the Senator could likely afford it. She was after all giving out five gold pieces to those willing to assist if they claimed it officially via contract. But that at least gave her a contractual obligation over those she paid. Still, though it would never have occurred to him to ask perhaps the personal nature of her request would lead the Senator to providing such extraordinary assistance.
Given the chance that it wouldn’t though Tavir began to think which coachmen he knew that owed him favors. Most coachmen charged a few copper pieces per mile you were traveling. Tavir pipped up, “Cant say I could afford a horse but especially if we traveled together I’m sure a coachman would be willing to take us for a few coppers. Better yet if our friend Hack here knows the area well enough we may be able to get hired on as coach guards along the way rather than pay them for passage. Just a thought if we cant come up with something else.”
In case its not clear I personally enjoy Bellaluna. But Tavir grew up on the streets with nothing. He wouldnt likely recognize the name and he'd just see a proud elf woman who makes him feel inferior, in part cause deep down he just feels inferior to those better off than him. So please dont take any offense as he takes time to warm to her.
Jun Valanthe |
Jun knows her family name thanks to his mother, but he is far too cunning to react as if he knew; that, and he doesn't really feel the pull of his mother's side of history. His father's, on the other hand...
Jun gathered up the group who he had just shared a table with and motions for them to follow him outside. Once there, he would say "Greetings friends. We have all taken it upon ourselves to aid the lovely senator, but I would hate to take anyone into danger that was ill prepared for it. Perhaps we can discuss what we each bring to the table, so to speak, in terms of ability to handle danger? I, of course, will be more than happy to go first. I am a skilled swordsman and have some magical ability, in addition to which I am fairly skilled at speaking to others. I have some experience running caravans through my previous profession, and so I have some leadership ability as well. As I have yet to introduce myself, my name is Valanthe Jun. In the Tindaran manner of speech, I list my family name first. You may feel free to call me Jun, as we shall be comrades in arms."
Baen "The Brave" Cobbleson |
"Well you've all heard my name, so I'll not bore you with that." Baen starts. "I've got some skill with my rapier and a little magic. I've got some experience trading and working with your average folk, and... I'm pretty good at fixing up your boots, should they be worn out." he says plainly.
Shenkt "Hack" Corchran |
The large man paces back and forth before the group.
I'm a Highlander with a bloodlust for battle. I earned my name, Hack, by slaying many orc raiders with my Axe. I'm as quick to anger with my enemies as I'm to laughter with my companions. I wanna attach fame and glory to my name!
After a brief pause, he spits on the ground.
Oh, and I know my way to the north and west to the Highlands. I can get ya where ya need to go, on foot, if necessary.
Bellaluna 'Bella' Liaqirelle |
Tavir, I am glad you're enjoying Bellaluna. I just want to be clear that I, the player, am not like that by ANY means! Please, no one take personal offence! I'm just trying to do my job of role-playing her based on her background and upbringing. I actually find it somewhat difficult to write the way that Bellaluna is being! - And as far as the royal family name, you all do whatever you want with that info, just throwing it out there!
Also just want to be clear, I am waiting for the Senator's response before stepping outside.
Still inside with the Senator: "And M'Lady, pardon me once more, one more slight request if I may. You mentioned the Mayor Camatil would have more information. Would you please give me as detailed a description of him as you can so that I may try to ascertain that I am speaking with the right person once I arrive in Blueblossom Haven?"
Once outside with the group: "I am a somewhat decent shot with the bow, an adequate climber if need be, and very good and fast with my hands and feet. I have been training for some 80 years or so to use my entire body as a weapon and perfecting my physique so as not to have a need of encumber-some armor or other weapons, though I am trained to use other weapons as well. I am also a fair drawer of maps, so as to help us avoid getting lost. Edited: I also know the way North as I have just travelled from Alderanye to here. Done editing. What I am not good at as has been so well displayed earlier, is talking with the lower races. ... See what I mean? I just did it again didn't I? I seriously do not intentionally mean to be putting you all beneath me, Its just so easy to do! Oh! Ahem ... maybe I'll just be quiet now."
Eafphqu |
When the highborn elf mentions teleportation Akassa's eyes go wide, in near astonishment, and her Swordbrother guards all chuckle. "M'lady, you speak of teleportation as if every street corner magician were capable of it?! I apologize for my lack of knowledge of the operation of things in Elfhome, but, I assure you, within the Republic there are very few people capable of casting such magic, and those who are capable have their own orders and tasks to take care of." She collects herself, having been unnecessarily ruffled by the casual mention of such powerful magic. "Yet, if it is easy, swift travel you seek, I would suggest checking the docks for a merchant vessel headed up the river to northern cities. Paid passage on such vessels isn't cheap, but I do hear that sometimes men and women are allowed to earn their passage through sailor's or sentry work. As to Mayor Camatil, he is a slight mangender male, and race human, with long, honey-brown hair, and dark brown eyes. It should be easy to recognize him, as he will have guards, and a sigil of his governmental office. Now, if you'll excuse me, I must visit with Galius." She nods a farewell, and then heads behind the bar to talk with the mustachioed owner of the Black Pegasus, leaving you all to yourselves, and your thoughts. Her guards flank and follow her with the military precision expected of veteran graduates of the Order of the Sword.
Edited, Luna and I were posting simultaneously.
Bellaluna 'Bella' Liaqirelle |
Looking around for the little guy, "Now young one," Referring to Ashrie VanShorn "let us see about getting you that bath & room you so desperately need!"
What will be the cost involved? I'll ask around for the cheapest I can get.
MendedWall12 |
If you want a meal and a hot bath at the Black Pegasus, you're going to be paying 1.5 gold (15 silver). You could get a lukewarm bath and a cheap meal in a different part of town, down by the docks for example, where a much less "worthwhile" clientele hangs out, for one silver piece.
Edit: Just noticed you were looking for an inn stay as well. Staying over night at the Black Pegasus will cost you 2gp. Again, there are other places in town to stay, some of the cheapest (read: worst) will only cost you 7 coppers, but I'm not even sure Bellaluna Liaqirelle would know where such establishments are, let alone set foot in one. XD
Ashrie VanShorn |
Looking to Bella a smile spreads wide across Ashrie's face. "Jeez miss, that'd be great!"
Turning to the rest of the group, "I'm Ashrie, Ashrie VanShorn!" A name that would carry no meaning to the elves in the group. "I'm pretty good at whacking people with this here stick," he says while drawing his quarterstaff and giving a couple of practice swings at an invisible opponent.
