Welcome. I'd like to get gameplay running pretty soon, but first we need to square away everything mechanically (and establish a little bit of background).

First things first: please post here and briefly introduce yourself (both in and out of character). You don't have to reveal any personal info you're not comfortable disclosing, but a sentence or two about gaming experience and posting habits would be good (and more is always welcome).

Step Two: please audit your crunch. In particular please read the race document I linked and make sure you've used the correct racial bonuses for this game (I don't remember how many of you were culprits but I noticed during evaluation that a lot of people missed things like the third trait that humans get).

Thirdly: feel free to start discussing any tweaks you'd like to make now that you see your teammates. I'd prefer nobody make major changes like switching classes, but trading out spells known or skills (or even some feats) would be fine. You don't have to change anything if you don't want but I'm giving you the option to diversify a bit.

I'll get the introductions started...
I'm Nate. I've been gaming for about 25 years- started on Basic D&D and have played in too many systems/settings to list right now; I started playing Pathfinder IRL during its beta and have been playing it in one way or another pretty regularly since then. I started playing PbP a little over 2 years ago and am enjoying it. I usually check the forums 2-3 times a day and try to post 1/day (though we all know RL gets crazy sometimes).

Note: Gameplay is open, sort of... please don't make any real posts there yet, but feel free to post something and delete it if you want to get the game into your campaign tab.

I'm Joe. A fairly run-of-the-mill nerd. 38 years old, gaming for about 25.

Been playing pathfinder for about 5 years, on the forums for 1.

I should be able to post daily, from my phone for simple posts and when I get home on the desktop for longer ones.

I tend to enjoy the healing/support role the most and am looking forward to this game quite a bit.

I'm still new enough to pbp's that if I make a mistake or step on toes, just let me know.

Sung will be a fairly easy to get along with old man.

I am Wuliev. A college student, writer, musician and game designer. I've been in the gamut of TTRPG's for about 5-6 years, and am addicted to immersive roleplay. Due to this addiction, I check the forums at minimum 4-5 times a day. I play PF mostly because of the access it grants me to this online community, and because some of the builds are fun in the context of all of the other builds. I usually play gish types.

I love connecting with people about any mutual passions. Feel free to talk to me about any of the things I've talked about above.

I look forward to our adventures.

Dean .. 41.. gaming for about 30 .. all sorts of systems.. only pathfinder for 3 or so years.

I check each day.. but i'm also +8 timezone.. hasn't been much of a problem as I kinda know to check before bed as that's when USA wakes up..

Gan is a Mongolian background character, has a big wolf AC.. will play secondary healing role. he's kinda support in that it's his role to get in and allow the Elite swordsmen to pick off their targets.

For character, I wrote Vashiro to be the servant of a samurai. Anyone going for the noble born type, that I could serve?

Sung Wo and Hiro Tawa are the two who were guaranteed spots, so it's them plus the four others. There is actually 1 more player that I had offered a guaranteed spot to but he didn't think he'd have time... I was talking to him today and things have slowed down for him and he's looking over your characters to see if any untouched niche leaps out at him. He'll let me/us know probably tomorrow if he wants to join us (so we might hit 7 after all).

I never wrote about Zhong Daxia himself, so I'll do so now.

Appearance:
Zhong Daxia is a wandering sword-bearing priest of unusual presence. A clearly god-touched man, his near-metallic golden skin and lustrous eyes can easily draw attention to him when needed. Average height, slightly rotund build, and wild-haired, he sports a wily wit, a calming smile, and the devil's own curiosity.

Personality:
If you asked him what god he serves, he would give a veiled answer, alluding to the Monkey King in some manner or another. The truth is that while he cannot hide his nature or his duty to people in need of spiritual service, Zhong is vexed by the gods most people worship. His interactions with them have left him cynical towards their 'dubious' blessings, mercies, and patronages. He has however found himself a spiritual home in true service of the Monkey King- the tricker of the immortals.

Sword Style:
Zhong practices a dishonorable style; the Blade of Despair. It comes with surprise, consuming its' foes holistically, through intimidation and the employ of malevolent influence. His scarlet Nagamaki has torn through many an unaware oppressor through one mortifying strike. Zhong is a flanking single-target striker gish who applies debuffs through intimidation stuff and the liberal use of casting Instrument of Agony. He also has all the skill-oriented fixings of the Inquisitor.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

I heard from the potential 7th player and he's out after all. So it'll be the 6 of you. It looks like we're waiting on 2 more introductions... Hopefully we'll hear from them tonight.

For skills, we have an inquisitor and a ranger/rogue, plus several people with 4+ skill points... I know there's going to be some overlap but, as I said, feel free to look at each other's skills and discuss if there's anything nobody is covering that maybe should be, or if there's something that might be overly covered... I know, for example, that several of you get bonuses to survival (or just tracking), but if your character is more urban and you just dropped some ranks in it to take advantage of the bonus, we might not need 3-4 trackers (especially if there's any skills people feel are lacking).

I wanted to get people's thoughts on one other thing too... I've never played a GMPC before but I'm wondering if it might be worth making one for this... He'd have his own alias, and be very much the silent/mysterious type- someone who doesn't take up the spotlight very much but I'd probably build him as a magus so he could cover knowledges/spellcraft (and be a convenient foil for in game info dumps or clues when needed), and he could provide some utility with arcane casting... Is that something people are interested in? Or does it sound like it might take away from the game somehow?

male human bard 6/drunken philosopher 1

I have a decent spellcraft but knowledges could be handy. I only cover local. I dont mind a gmpc, if we dont like him we can arrange an 'accident'......

Hi all.

I'm Stratton. I've been playing RPGs since the mid to late 70's, Pathfinder since its alpha (we were playing Rise of the Runelords and switched over to alpha then beta then the published PF.) I was in the previous game run by Nate as Graverattler and had a blast, but had to leave for a variety of reasons.

I'm playing the rabble-clearer with the big sword. Kenoichi loves a good fight, and does his best when surrounded by lesser opponents.

male human bard 6/drunken philosopher 1

Good to see you, Rattles the Grave!

Hi everyone! My names Joe. Long-time RL friends with Nate and JoeLudwick. Let's see, I've been playing DnD since college so about 14 years now and pathfinder for about the last 6 or so. I just recently got into PbP, but it's fun. I'm looking forward to playing a game with a lot of folks and this game sounds exciting.

Hiro Tawa is exactly as DM Nate has described. A rakish swordsman. He tends to get by on his charm and wit which incidentally also seem to get him into trouble in the first place. His 3 favorite things in life are drinking, women, and fighting (usually in that order). Hiro is focused on self-preservation and will aid others when it helps him. Also... He despises wizards with a passion.

I like the completeness of having 7 swordsman and a few extra knowledges covered/overlapped so I think a GMPC would be good.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Ok, so for GMPC that's 3 for it and 3 no comments... I'll start working on something but if anyone has any objections please feel free to share them. In the meantime, you guys can keep talking about your characters.

Wanderer/Vashiro, I don't think anyone is specifically a samurai but Hiro could fit the bill as a noble born swordsman (he's got face skills and know[nobility], and his background isn't finalized), if you don't mind that his temperament isn't ideal for a samurai? You two should talk about that, or else you may want to think about tweaking your background so that now you're without a samurai to serve and sort of feeling like a ronin yourself?

I don't think retainers were exclusive to those bearing daimyo rank. Historically I'd imagine almost anyone important bearing a retainer. Any warrior could fit the bill i'm sure.

I'm opposed to GMPC's, byt it won't ruin my experience if we need to do that.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Commoner 2

I'm ok with DMPCs, especially as gap-fillers.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

alright, unless wanderer/Vashiro vehemently objects I'll start working on a quiet GMPC then. We'll try it out on a trial basis and if he's detracting from anything will kill him off or write him out at a convenient time.

No worries. Sounds good.

Hi Vashiro,

Hiro is technically of noble birth but not exactly fitting the bill and making his parents proud through his graceful scaling of the social ladder. If you're looking for an honorable leader, then Hiro is probably not your guy. If you dont mind occasionally baby-sitting (I imagine a sort of Badass-Alfred / Batman kind of scenario) then I think that could be pretty fun.

EDIT: After reading through your background, I think this is actually perfect. I can work with you to flesh out more specific background info for the both of us if you would like.

@Nate: sorry, still have limited internet in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. I am all for GMPCs, they work as great tools to assist the flow of a storyline and balance a party's weaknesses. The magus is a good option, but would a bard present as a better option? They are the epitome of skill monkeys, especially regarding knowledges, and something like the Arcane Healer archetype would also make the character a solid 2nd healer (and human favored class bonus grants extra spells). And if you wanted to give it extra martial flair, it could be built as a bard (arcane healer) 5 / unchained monk (sensei) 2 (that said, bards get proficiency with longsword, so their is your sword regardless). I would be happy to stat it out if you were interested in seeing a proposal.

Hiro I think we would be a perfect match. Depending on who I paired with, I saw the possibility as the protective uncle to the naive young noble scion, the advisor/agent of a bold confident hero, or the watcher/mess-cleaner for a troublesome wayward inheritor. Sounds like the 3rd it is. An addditional spin could be if your family has been wrongfully killed. What are you thinking?

Everyone I did an analysis of all our skills and found the following:
Skills with No Ranks: Fly, Profession
Skills with Limited Representation: Appraise (+4), Knowledge (Geography) (+5, +4), Perform (+2)
Skills that Could Use a Little Boost: Knowledge (Planes) (+7, +3), Knowledge (Religion) (+7, +3)
Otherwise, we are in pretty good shape on skills. If you spent 1 point on multiple knowledges, I would encourage selecting one to focus on instead (I opted for Knowledge (engineering) as it fit with building and disabling traps). We are also likely over-represented on Perception, but it is generally viewed as the most important skill in the game, so that is probably okay...

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Thanks for the offer, Vashiro, but I'll be fine putting a GMPC together. One of the big reasons I was looking at magus over bard is that I want to avoid having too much Charisma (since he's supposed to blend into the background most of the time). I'm probably going to bard VMC though for bardic knowledge.

@Vashiro

That's perfect. I had originally planned that Hiro's backstory would include the death of his parents (by some wizard). The tragedy resulted in his already wayward leanings turning into nigh compete neglect of his station and responsibilities as his only real passion is revenge at this point. I can definitely see him honestly needing someone who is charged with protecting him and yours is probably the only advice he'd actually heed.

Cool. I'll write up the rest of my back story this weekend and send it to you to make sure it jives well with what you envisioned for you character as well.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Alright, well it seems like everyone's square with their skills and spells and whatnot?

The setup for the campaign is that Sung Wo has sought out each of you seeking aid for a town besieged by bandits. You're each 7th level so you've accomplished some stuff... I'd really like for everyone to post something that their character might be know for. It should be something impressive (but reasonable for a 6-7th level character to do). This will be the thing that attracted Sung Wo's attention to you, but will also be something that you may be recognized for throughout the campaign. This will be sort of a lower fantasy level game (in that it's less about magic and monsters and more about people with swords), but your story could still involve something fantastical (like killing a minotaur that was coming out of a mine to hunt people in a silver town). Or it could be something more mundane (like saving the emporer's niece from an attempted kidnapping).

The post can be anywhere from a couple sentences to a few paragraphs, but if it's long please use a spoiler just so those of us who primarily use phones don't have trouble scrolling by when we need to. If there's something already in your background that you think would be suitable feel free to use and/or expand that. Hiro and Vashiro can do one together if they like (as could anyone else who wants to have been partners beforehand). Once this is done we'll get gameplay rolling!

ps- this one story will likely be all that the other PCs know about you at the beginning of the campaign, so keep that in mind.

Gan Naran is the only surviving member of the "Heroes of Three" a song or play that you may have heard tells the tale of "The Emerald Hunter" a vicious Forest Dragon that was hunted down and slain by a coalition of Heroes from three villages.

Sung Wo is an organizer. A planner. A masterful, but quiet facilitater.

When the 'Butcher of Aryan' and his gang were taken down 7 years ago by the Peasant Knights, only those who delve deep into the story know that Sung was there.

When the witch known as Dispair was hunted by 21 men (only 14 of whom came home) for 6 months, driven high into the hills, and slain forever, Sung was there.

No stories contain great deeds or miracles performed by Sung, but many stories of great deeds include him. Quietly helping, nudging brave men to greatness.

For the wise and kind, Sung represents the arrival of a solution.

For the conniving and evil, he is a harbinger of the end.

Will post Zhong's feat tonight when able.

Of the priests several renowned accomplishments, one stands out above the others.

The Tale of the Royal Wine:

During a pilgrimage the young monk stumbled upon a village who was ruled by a sinister daimyo who forced the villagers to farm for him and took their crops. Such was their destitution that they lived off of only tea. The daimyo's son was ill and and one of his swordsman was sent to ask the priest for help. Zhong Daxia went along.

When in his presence, the daimyo commanded that the holy man heal his son on threat of death. Zhong went along, but told the Lord that the only way for his son to become well was if he drank of the finest royal wine. The lord hastily then brought out his finest vintage and gave some to his son. The boy did not recover. The Lord asked why this was so, and Zhong replied that the wine was too weak, and that only a more regal bottle would make him recover. So the daimyo sent his treasurer to the next largest domain in hiroguo, to bring back a good vintage. When he came back, the boy drank the wine and got sicker. The daimyo asked why this was, and Zhong replied again: only a more regal wine would make him recover. The treasurer was sent out several more times, with greater sums of money, bringing back finer wines. To no avail.

Finally the corrupt lord grew angry at the priest and accused him of deceit. He asked where such a wine could be found that would heal his diseased son. Zhong told him that he owned the wine himself, but that the price was too high. The Lord grew angrier at the priest, and threw his men at him. Zhong slew them one by one, until the only warriors left in the castle were Zhong and the lord himself. Trembling in fear, the now humbled lord begged at sword point for pardon, for he only wanted his son to be well. He begged dishonorably for the wine that Zhong Daxia owned, and asked for a proper price!

The priest answered; everything you bear. The quaking lord relinquished his kingdom to the priest, and asked for the medicine.
Zhong Daxia told him simply; the royal wine I own sits before me, and the priest run him through.

Zhong Daxia left the town showering the people with the profits due their labors. The boy was found dead several morns after.

wrote this out in short hand, somewhat off the cuff. Tone turned out a bit darker than what I intended. I can balance it out with his happy and playful mannerisms in character. I wanted to accentuate his wit in tricking the daimyo but it just became a bloodier conflict than what I thought it would be. Hope it entertains anyways

Kenoichi Harida measured his breaths with his cuts. The men surrounding him all bore the uniforms of the Emperor's foe, Jui Kwan. His commander lay dead next to him, having presented Kenoichi with exactly the opportunity he needed. With one swift stroke, two of the dozen enemy soldiers fell. These men had been the most eager to confirm the death of the hated Captain Voishu, coming in too closely and too off-balance.

The others, eager for the battle to be over, and unafraid of the lone, low-born Harida, pressed forward, ready to cut him down by the numbers. Adopting a more defensive stance, Kenoichi fended off most of their retaliatory blows, save one which came dangerously close to his eye. Utilizing his armor to ward off blows of no consequence, he allowed the men to surround him. Once they were in close, he performed a sweeping blow which cleaved the life from four more of his opponents. He loudly invoked a prayer to Hou Tsensu "Lord of Battle, Master of Conquest, fill my arms with your strength!"

Their number halved in seconds, the soldiers of the Kwan army began to doubt their victory. Kenoichi pressed on this fear, causing two of the men facing him to blanch and run. A few crimson seconds later, Kenoichi knelt beside his fallen commander, bloodied, but unbeaten, with the corpses of ten enemies surrounding them. The sounds of battle stilled, and Kenoichi's breath broke into sobs.

I tried to finish my GMPC last night, but as he neared completion I realized his knowledges were too high (like over +20, plus some inspiration to boost them). As I said, I want Kojima to blend into the background mostly and that much knowledge is going to end up in the spotlight too often. I'm looking at ways to retool him and hopefully will have him done with his notable deed posted tonight.

Last spring a distant cousin of the emperor was traveling east from the frontier when brigands came upon her small caravan. As panic began to take hold one unassuming porter drove everyone into a narrow pass. "Hurry on, I'll hold them here," he told the lady.

The caravan sped away and by night fall there was no sign of the bandits giving pursuit. At dinner great toasts were made to the humble swordsman's sacrifice, but in the morning he was there in the camp with them. When asked what happened in the pass, he answered simply, "those men will trouble no more travelers."

When the lady pressed him for a name he said only, "Kojima."

I need to pick spells, and calculate hp/AC/etc, but otherwise I'm ready to go. Looks like we're just waiting on Hiro and Vashiro for their story(ies) and we may be able to start tomorrow...

The Temple of One Thousand Skulls is a legendary place of horror, nestled in a hidden valley far to the west of Hiroguo. The cannibalistic indians that reside in the valley are known as the Fangs of Kotiri, after their bloodlust-filled diety. Among their horde of wealth amassed from countless humans sacrificed laid the mythical Rain Drop's Whisper, a relic katana of a lost era. The Phoenix Emperor sought to have it brought to his throne, and so it was that the bold and daring Hiro Tawa, accompanied by his ghost like servant Vashiro Hitaki, crossed the twice cursed Kadatodo River, discovered the lost caves leading into the valley, slew a hundred Fangs, and finally bested the Herald of Katiri, a four-armed behemoth who could remove a man's head with a single swing of one of his four axes...

And so it was that Sung Wo sought out the duo...

Ok, cool. It's after 1am here, so I'm not going to try to do a gameplay post tonight, but it should be up tomorrow.

You all have each others' stories, try to remember them (for rp purposes), but feel free to develop your own opinions/beliefs about the truth behind the story... for example, you could suspect that Kojima payed off the bandits (or had some connection with them to dissuade an attack) instead of fighting; or, it may not be uncommon for more worldly men to believe that it was more like a dozen or two Indian warriors and some kind of monstrous humanoid that Hiro and Vashiro slew (rather than 100 plus the herald of a god).

For your first post please give at least a brief physical description of your character and then greet Sung Wo and/or introduce yourself to the man with him as appropriate for your character.

@Sung Wo- please check your PMs before posting.

PS- if you see in your campaign tab that there are new posts in both discussion and gameplay, please check the discussion posts before posting in gameplay. Sometimes I might have specific requests/instructions I post here (like in the above post), or I might clarify things in discussion sometimes instead of cluttering gameplay.

Yeah- because of the nature of this intro segment I'm kind of relying on Sung to guide things forward... I'll interject when necessary, or if you feel like there's more you want to say/do in a particular scene you can say so here (in discussion), or include it in a post that denotes it's happening else- where/when (in an ooc tag), and separate it from any current action with a string of " ******** " and then another tag.

example:

Absolutely.

Going through midterm hell this week. I'll be as active as I can. I don't think I'll actually be posting irregularly, but in the event it happens, that's why. If you've a mind to, please pray for me. Lol. Thanks!
