Valgrim Twin-Axe |
"I agree, Vug, it may come to life and club ya!" Valgrim takes the leather armor. "This room makes me tired so I want to leave. I think we should go down the stairs and continue to avoid the skittering beetles."
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
"Uh, guys? he asks with bit of trepidation in his voice. "If we're going in there I think you should know - I'm not exactly what you would call a strong swimmer."
"It all depends how deep it is. Let's go have a look." Valgrim slowly walks down the stairs, waraxe in hand, to see how deep it is. He is loooking around at the water, in case anything attacks.
Black Tom |
Valgrim descends into the water. It is pitch-black but clear, so his Darkvision helps him orient himself. The stairs emerge in a large room (about 40 feet square) with five large pillars in the middle, that obscure your sight, so that you can't see whether there are any exits.
The room is completely submerged. Do you want to explore it further.
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
Valgrim checks the stairs for any tracks of anything recently coming out or going into the water.
Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19...+2 if undead
Chisora |
Vug Vang says in an exaggerated whisper: "Does anyone else get the f-f-feeling that we shouldn't make that statue angry?"
"Yeah it doesn't look too friendly does it?" Chisora comments. She takes one last look around before following the others back out, the spring returning to her stride as she steps across the threshold back into the corridor.
While Valgrim checks out the stairs, she keeps a watch on the beetles just in case the finish their meal and decide they want dessert.Valgrim Twin-Axe |
Valgrim asks Chisora and Urg for their silk rope and ties it together into one 100' long rope and then ties it around his waist. He drops his non-essentials, such as backpack, bedroll, etc.. "I can hold my breath almost two minutes and a half. If I tug at the rope, pull me back immediately. If ye can borrow a sunrod, I'l put it on me belt so you's can see me." Valgrim waits for the sunrod and then with waraxe in hand, takes a deep breath and walks down the stairs into the water.
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
"Sweetie, in the face of certain death many years ago, I froze and many of me kin died as a result. From then on, me motto is to face death on me own terms! But thanks for worryin'!" With that Valgrim submerges.
EDIT: He straps his waraxe on his back and goes in with his morningstar in hand (piercing damage!).
Black Tom |
Valgrim:
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
Attack with piercing spike of morningstar (2-handed): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Black Tom |
The water suddenly starts churning before you and you see waves lapping the stairs. Do you want to investigate?
Valgrim:
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Black Tom |
The wave subsides and Valgrim comes back up, somewhat the worse for wear.
Apart from the contents of the spoilers he can report that there are two visible exits, one at each side of the room, as well as one door in the opposite wall.
You get 67 xp each for Valgrim's trouble.
Friar Feres |
Seeing the wounded state of his companion, Feres rushes over and lays his hands on Valgrim's wounds. The priest prays for the grace of the Healing Flame, and some of the dwarf's wounds close over.
Burn Protection from Evil to spontaneously cast Cure Light Wounds on Valgrim. CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
"Thank you Friar, your work is always appreciated. It was a living wave of water, never seen anything quite like it. Lucky, I was able to hurt it. Let me catch my breath and I'll go under again, the way should be clear now, with the guardian gone, I hope. Unless someone else wants to go first?"
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
1d2 ⇒ 1 even right, odd left...guess we're going left
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
"Maybe someone should go with you this time. I am willing to go."
"I welcome the company, Bub."
Black Tom |
Turning left you enter a small oval room (about 15 feet across) with four long benches and niches along the wall.
On the floor there is a skeletal human body, still wearing a red masterwork leather armor with the MM insignia on the breast. A shortsword hangs in a moldy scabbard.ö Its armor is torn apart and ruined, as with sharp claws.
Heal DC 10:
As you search the room, something approaches from your rear. Perception checks and initiatives, please. Oh, and a new map here.
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
Heal: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23...add +2 if undead
Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Black Tom |
Valgrim looks at the body (which by the way is holding a lantern of the same shape as the other ones. You can't make out the color in the darkness), and notices that this looks like the typical work of a ghoul. Therefore he is not surprised when he catches a whiff of its stench in the water.
Valgrim can act in the surprise round, but not until the ghoul claws at Urg for 2 points of damage, forcing a Fort 13 save.
Valgrim is up (a standard action), and then the ghoul. Map is updated above.
Black Tom |
Valgrim moves to face the ghoul, but that only serves to fuel its fury. In a flurry of teeth and claw it throws itself at the bold ranger, causing him 10 points of damage and forcing a Fort 17 save.
Any of you that are not paralysed can act now.
Valgrim:
Bubluka |
Bubba whips at the ghoul:
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Rules question: I am a little unclear how combat maneuvers work with melee weapons. Dow youroll for the combat maneuver after you hit with a melee attack (like a wolf's trip) or in place of the melee attack?
Bubluka |
Bubluka wrote:I'm going to say that you can't use your whip underwater.Bubba whips at the ghoul:

Makes sense, I didn't realize we were still underwater. He probably cannot orate underwater either I imagine.
Bubba will move next to the ghoul (K10) and attack with his rapier.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
Wow, that ghoul was vicious...1 hp left! Knew that was coming but didn't want Urg to catch coup de grace if he was paralyzed. By the way, Bubluka, half movement in the water so it will take a double move to get to K10.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15...guess what? time to use hero point and add +2 to make a 17! (gone so quickly, I hardly knew ya!)
Valgrim's attack with morningstar and favored enemy bonus: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Damage: 1d6 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 = 14
Black Tom |
You add hero points before rolling actually, but I'll let it pass. You can also use as many as 5 on a single roll for a total of +10. The point of hero points is to encourage heroic play, giving you an edge where it really matters and enabling you to pull off some crazy stunts, as well as mitigating bad luck.
Valgrim shrugs off the freezing sensation and smites the ghoul. The point of his morningstar pierces the ghoul's temple, shutting it down.
After a short breather and report you can investigate the two bodies in peace and quiet. The ghoul is wearing a ring with the MM insignia, worth 200 gp and the items on the other corpse are as stated above, including the red lantern.
You also get 100 xp each for battling the ghoul in these unfavorable conditions.
Valgrim Twin-Axe |
Sorry, was unaware of the hero point mechanic.
If Urg was paralyzed, Bub takes Urg and Val the ghoul and we drag them out of the water. The dwarf is bleeding profusely, so he asks the Friar for some help again and Urg is bleeding as well.
Friar Feres |
"By the Grace of Sarenrae, the Healing Flame, may your wounds be mended!" Feres intones as he raises his holy symbol, invoking the power of his goddess. A warm radiance flows outward from the symbol, washing over the wounded explorers and leaving them with a fleeting sensation of basking in the sunlight of a pleasant summer's day.
Expend 2 Channels (Healing): 2d6 ⇒ (6, 3) = 9
"WHOA! What is that! Feres exclaims as he sees the body that Valgrim dragged back with him.
Vug Vang |
Once everyone is conscious and moving, Vug asks: "Is that the missing lantern? If so, I suggest we take the lanterns back with us to town and come back f-fresh tomorrow to try them out. I'd like to restock my elixirs and maybe whip up a f-f-few other things in my lab."
