Chapter : Harbinger of Spring

As you head steadily eastwards, the terrain turns to forest once more as the coast falls away to your south. You seem to be slowly climbing up from sea-level, but the temperature remains the same, cold but

You are able to forage enough to keep you fed as you move, allowing your scant reserves to remain intact for now.

After a few days of travel, as night falls this day you crest the top of a hill and the terrain sprawls away from you, a deep valley shrouded in mist. The sides rise up like a green tsunami, the centre a lush and verdant sea of trees.

knowledge (geography) DC 15:
The change in terrain and weather conditions would indicate you're going in the right direction. Your rough recollection of this area is that the valley leads to an edge from which there is a view across the desert.

knowledge (geography) DC 20:
You also recall this area is home to a secluded elven settlement, and no few ancient ruins.

Reckon we camp here as it's got a good view eh? suggests Robban.

Whisper shrugs. Aura stares in to space, a distant expression on her face.

During the travels

Lilith is quiet most of the trip and seems to enjoy focusing on hunting and gathering as the group travels. During the evenings she scribes more scrolls and offers to scribe any spell she knows for Lenneth. During the second day Flynn finds that she walks beside him one of the times he is actually on the ground. it seems obvious that something is on her mind. Finally she speculates This journey and trial, its changing us. I know our life experiences change us, but this is something more, and I do not feel in control. We do what must be done and sometimes we do things that at least from those removed from the situation might be considered evil. I am ok with that, but, well, I do not ever want to learn to enjoy it. That scares me more than any of the undead. Can you understand that? What can we do about it?

Knowledge Geography: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11 Sigh, oh well.

Yes, a nice view.

Over the next few days, Lenneth largely spends her time helping to forage for food as well as attempting to teach Aura what she knows about magic and how to duplicate some of her other powers such as her gift of flight. And though she's loathe to admit it, it almost feels right to be on the move once again.

Maybe I've just gotten used to always being on the move? Or maybe I'm just not fated to settle down. Maybe none of us are.

***************************************

"Probably a good idea," Lenneth agrees as they gaze down on the misty valley below. "We'll want to be as alert as we can be when we head down into that valley - the trees will make for some good cover from the rain and sun but who knows what's down there?"

After many months of traveling alone, Feldus finds the situation of travelling with other people a new one for him. He is silent as the thoughts of what his life has now become fill his mind. More now he finds it necessary to withdraw back into his shell somewhat.

As the view of the valley looms into view, he sniffs the verdant air un-trusting of what he smells.

"Lenneth is right. A place like that would be swarming with refugees if there was nothing guarding it. Should we head there we need to be cautious."

Unless anyone objects, Flynn will head down into the valley, as far as he can go in about 15 minutes, quick circle, and then come back.

Lenneth, Lilith has offered to scribe a scroll for you to learn. Did you want to take her up on that offer?

Inactive

"You two be careful," Lenneth warns as Flynn and Melo prepare to make a quick scouting trip. "Not to state the obvious but Flynn, you and Skyfall do stand out when you're flying low so if there's anyone down there, well..." she doesn't feel the need to finish her sentence. "In the meantime, we'll get started setting up camp."

As she moves to unpack her things, Aura's odd, vacant expression catches Lenneth's eye. "Aura...? Are you okay?"

Flynn and Skyfall fly above the tree canopy for some minutes, the tree tops are lush and green despite the season, yet a constant mist threads its way throughout the whole valley.

Further towards the east, Flynn can just make out where the valley drops off again, the plateau it is on evidently opening out on to different terrain. Towards the north east, several hours walk, he can see a break in the trees, like a gigantic hand reached down and ripped them out. He would have to be closer to determine what, if anything, was there instead of the trees, but it's the only different terrain in the immediate vicinity.

*

Back with the rest of the group, Aura glances up at Lenneth as she approaches. A forced smile materialises, but just as soon vanishes to be replaced by frown as she stares in to space.

I am not even sure what that questions means mother...

A few moments later she quickly glances up and meets Lenneth's eyes again, her impassive face breaking in to a worried, almost beseeching expression

...that is, I am ok, thank you for asking. I just... I don't know.

She sits down on a nearby fallen tree

I am not really sure what to make of.. all this.. of anything really.

She sighs

I would like to continue learning from you about this power I have in me, that is something I can concentrate on, it takes my mind of... everything else...

Aura has proven an apt pupil, power seems to come to her easily, but her inexperience tends to show in her lack of control.

Robban stares up at the sky, fruitlessly searching for the moon amid the low and overcast sky.

Well, this'll do I guess, not much cover from animals but we could risk a fire as the glow would be hidden?

Whisper rolls her eyes but gets to her feet, stretching like a cat and glancing around as she hears something, but then relaxes again. At that moment Flynn returns from his short scouting mission, Skyfall navigating the branches of the trees above and spiraling down to land gracefully by you.

"Sometimes it's okay to say 'I don't know'," Lenneth responds gently as she sits down next to Aura. "There's a lot that we don't know either," she continues, nodding at the rest of the party as they work on making camp. "Just how the Cult did what they did, why the gods have been silent...lots of things."

"But all we can do is try to learn as best we can - all of us, together." She offers Aura a smile, though there's a hint of sadness in it too. "I know that's probably not much help right now, but I won't try to lie and tell you that I or anyone else has all of the answers. No one does."

These trees go on for miles. Flynn says as Skyfall swoops down. He dismounts and begins stripping her saddle with the efficiency you'd expect of a procedure carried out hundreds of times.

Except for one area a few miles in. That looks cleared and could well be a village or something. Sometimes back home we would log hundreds of yards of trees for both the lumber and to farm the land.

Lenneth raises her head. "Another possible village? Will we have to pass that way? It could be worth having a look at if it won't be too far out of our way."

We need to have something to barter with them, else they'll chase us away...if we're lucky. Remember what nearly happened to me?" He adds darkly.

Inactive

"That's a good point," Lenneth frowns. "And after Whitecliff I don't want to linger at any other settlements we might find..."

She sighs. "I think most of what we have to barter with is our own talents. Fixing things, crafting, healing. They'll have to do until we can find or make more actual goods that might be worth something to someone."

I'll check it out in the morning. Flynn says. Old Sky and I can be pretty sneaky when we want to be. We don't have to fly directly overhead, she can carry Feldus and myself and then we can sneak closer

Ha ha! Am now with laptop once again, normal service will resume!!

Melo: You saw the same things as Flynn on your aerial tour

Aura seems to scrutinise every word Lenneth speaks, dissecting them for meaning. She finally nods

That's not something I think children hear often. Children seek reassurance, they want stability, they need boundaries, rules...

She glances up

...I prefer guidance as to how to choose the right path, rather than instruction on avoiding the wrong path

She returns to her own company, barely speaking two words the rest of the night.

Robban shrugs

Maybe this place you found was far enough away from everything else to avoid most of the bad things?

He raises his eyebrows, a slight ray of hope on his face.

Whisper rolls her eyes, he continues

Well even if we lose a few hours heading off at a tangent, it's kinda on the way, we can trade for supplies, information maybe?

The night passes uneventfully, and the morning dawns on a cold day with no clouds in the sky.

Perception or Survival rolls please, and presuming you are making your way to the clearing Flynn and Melo spotted?

"Let's be careful with this village. I'll get in closer tomorrow too, As a small bird I shouldn't draw too much attention. Flynn will be there to give me some back up also." He says looking over Skyfall.

After a little while Melo moves to sit next to Flynn."Flynn would you mind if I spent some time with Sky? I need to push my power and there isn't anything else around for me to learn from I think I could change into a Roc, with some time that would be something to fear."

Gods help me, I hope I'm not doing more harm than good with her. But she wants to know what to do, not what to avoid...that's a start. Maybe some of the others have some insight...?

She frowns. As far as she knew, none in the group had ever been a parent. Not for the first time, she wishes she had Polo there to look to for guidance.

You were a lot better at this than I am. Then again, you had a decade or two of experience on me, she chuckles to herself.

***********************

Later that night before turning in, the witch calls Indigo to her side. She wasn't sure how she knew about the ritual they were about to perform, but she knew it was the only way for her to make use of the scroll Lilith had scribed for her.

Over the next hour, she carefully commits the scroll to the flames and gathers the ashes into a small bowl. After mixing them with water and herbs, an ugly gray solution is formed - which to the surprise of anyone watching, Indigo consumes rather than Lenneth herself.

"Well...?" the witch asks nervously. "Did it work?"

Earlier....

When Melo asks Flynn if he can study Skyfall the halfling merely shrugs.

She's one of a kind, I'll tell you that. The way she cuts through the air, rides the currents like she can sense they are there... seems damn near magical to me. Aye, watch the way she flies if you like Melo. Some of the Skin-changers back in my village used to take their form as a totem animal - rocs were treated as Kings and Queens of the skies.

So I know it can be done my friend and after the miracles you worked back there you seem capable of anything.

Aura remains quiet as the group travels, holding her arms tucked across her body as she trudges onwards with the rest of the party.

Melo's guidance through the woods proves successful, and you make good time cutting through forest which doesn't seem to have had many visitors at all.

By midday the keen eyesight of Feldus spots a nigh-overgrown stone with etchings upon it.

Thassilonian script... mush of which is blasted away by the passage of ages, but you are able to decipher 'vault', 'temple', 'veil of stars', '' and one particular set of runes which has different meanings depending on what goes before it, unfortunately most of the preceeding script is gone... 'Trapped in dragon's twisted flame', 'Scion of regency's throne ' or 'Rain of black-winged mist' are all equally possible, and seem to be the focus of the signpost. One thing is for sure, judging by the notice and its position, whatever is up ahead long ago stood very proud of itself.

About fifteen minutes walk from where the clearing is, Flynn's scouting reveals what lies within... a wide expanse of dark stone walls pepper the area, the occasional recognisable shape of a building long gone to history and nearly reclaimed by nature. This must have been a large city or town at some point, though the building materials are all stone.

Robban whistles softly

Well, don't spose ghosts have got much to trade eh?

His words hang in the air as the wind gusts through the trees, the branches waving as the carpet of brown grass covering the old ruined city shivers in return.

Feldus gives Robban a long look but does hold his tongue, barely. Turning his attention to the ruins ahead he nods in reply to Flynn. Lenneth shivers, not wanting to imagine what sort of other horrors might have drove this place to be abandoned long before the Red Harvest. "Let's try and stay at least a little optimistic - if people lived here then there have to be some cellars or something left, right? Maybe we can find something useful," she offers. "Probably not food, but maybe supplies or weapons."

Flynn doesn't spot anything moving beyond grass waving in the wind, but he does see what looks like the ruined floor of one old house leads to stone steps receding in to the earth beneath the ground. It is pitch black after half a dozen feet down the cracked stone steps.

Feldus' senses don't detect anything living around here either, in fact the place makes his hackles rise slightly. He does however smell the faint scent of lavender, and finds some bushes growing besides one intact wall. The other side shows signs of semi-recent habitation, but whoever was once here is long gone. There is a sheet of patched oilcloth pitched against the wall and tied to a nearby rock with tattered rope. Under a nearby piece of stone, Feldus finds a sack containing food long since rotted away, but also a dagger, three sapphires worth 250 gp each and a small vial that smells... bad.

When Lenneth reveals the contents of the potion, he grimaces in trepidation. "Black lotus? A very rare and expensive poison. Not something a common thief would use. A trained assassin was here, and judging by the smell of lavender, a woman." He glances up at the ladies, "Know anyone who has used lavender perfume before?"

While the women ponder the question posed to them, he glances over where Flynn has apparently discovered something of interest. "What did you find there, my friend?"

No good against the groaners obviously, but very effective against the living..."

Melo's search reveals nothing new.

Whisper frowns at the discovered poison, looking somewhat pensive as Feldus mentions lavender.

Robban shrugs

Well there isn't ash from a camp fire or any other sign of recent living here, must be from a while ago he tries to reassure Lenneth, not altogether too convincingly.

How big is the way down?

Melo step forward to look down the steps. "Take your time, there could be traps." He takes up a defensive stance and moves behind Feldus.

Nothing happens after Flynn throws the torch down the steps. Ten or so steps down there is a small landing, the flame of the torch licks at the damp stone to no avail, and it gutters out after a minute or so.

Shrugging his shoulders, Robban hefts his club and follows Flynn, Melo and Feldus as they step gingerly down the steps.

There is a pervading damp stench of mildew and stagnant water, Feldus' has to hold a hand over his nose it is almost overwhelming. The familiar radiance of Lilith's dancing lights lead the way, illuminating an old low-ceilinged cellar with multiple chambers. The steps are in the north-west corner, and there are openings in the small hallway east (covered in cobwebs), south (pool of water on the floor as far as the lights will illuminate) and west (rotten wooden door under the steps).

Will do a map for next post but out of time tonight :)

As the others descend down the steps Lenneth glances over her shoulder at Whisper and Aura. "So far so good it sounds like," she says softly. "But all the same, be ready for anything..." she continues as she readies her dagger and begins to head down behind the others.

Feldus breathes in the fragrance, amazed it still reminded him of his home back in the sewers of Magnimar. "Such memories this brings back..." He mutters quietly to himself.

As the group prepared to move out, Feldus lays a hand on Flynn's shoulder. "Be careful. There may be traps left behind by that assassin. Let me see if any undead are lurking here." Chanting softly to himself, he holds his hand out in front of him and sweeps the area in a slow arc.

Cast Detect Undead.

Flynn nods and begins tapping ahead of him gently with his Lance.

Flynn carefully heads towards the rotten door and gives it a prod with his lance, trying to prise it open from a distance.
