OK, this went to crap in the blink of an eye :(

Will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Fail
Skyfall will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 Fail

Seeing Lenneth collapse in a heap, Flynn's heart sinks.

Lenneth! he cries, leaping down from Skyfall's back but getting his feet caught in the stirrups in his haste. He ignores the sudden cold agony that washes over him and rushes to the fallen witches' side.

Fast dismount: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10 Fail

Heal check to stabilise: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 SUCCESS!

Skyfall, get back! he roars over his shoulder and the bird obliges, though with some objection, retreating back down the corridor. Don't you die, not yet, not for these bastards... he says desperately, ripping the sleeve from his shirt and stuffing it haphazardly into Lenneth's deadly wounds, trying his best to staunch the bleeding which, miraculously, he does.

slight retcon, upstairs:

As he is organizing the defensive line, Lives turns to a young lady in the back of the room.
"Please, say this to the halfling Flynn: 'Should Lives's name no longer apply, his birth-name was Matikar' Will you do this for me, miss?"

Pharasma has turned her face from this world, as scared as all the other gods! snarls Brae.

Euron's weapon cleaves in to her shoulder and she grunts in pain as blood pools on the floor beneath her feet. Stepping towards the oracle, inside the reach of his weapon, one hand darts out and brushes against his face. Pain spirals inwards from her touch, searing its way through Euron's very being doing 12 damage, Euron is close enough now to see some of her wounds close as his stolen lifeforce is used to heal the foul cultist. One ring on a finger of her hand glows briefly before winking out.

Gazing over Nikolai, Lilith is very sure he has stopped breathing and is not moving at all, he stares in to space...

Radek spins in place to face Lachen

It's impolite to stab a lady in the back, here let me show you the gentleman's way!

He swings his blade in a wide overhand chop that smashes against Lachen's shoulder in a heavy blow doing 8 damage, he pulls back the blade and sends it darting out again but it glides past by a hair's breadth.

I would say that's it impolite to stab a woman at all, but I'm not very keen on high society manners. You know, soldier's life and so on, busy to kill and not being killed, that kind of things... Unfortunatly for you, you are not a woman. So I can stab your face. Violently...

Upstairs:

Taking a moment to call to mind the fleet-footed Firepelts of the Cinderlands, Lives leans back below the blow of the dead giant, then stutter-steps within its reach, hands stiffened like spears to flicker out in a rapid series of strikes.

upstairs:
Lives' strikes are true, yet his hand feels like it has made contact with a stone wall thinly covered with leathery skin, and the monster appears unfazed as it raises its giant hands and brings them down in front of it, barely missing the Shoanti and leaving two broken flagstones on the floor of the hallway

There is a large echoing thud from upstairs and more dust sifts down from the ceiling.

Flynn's desperate attacks are barely turned aside by Brae's magically enchanted skin.

Lachen's flaming trident seems to take Radek completely by surprise and the three tines inflict grievous wounds upon his face even as the flames scour his flesh, he drops his gentlemanly facade and screams in pain. His flinching back from the weapon causes Lachan's follow up thrust to just miss.

All good Lilith, always room for a retcon action if it doesn't contradict what's already gone on :)

Brae raises her skull symbol again, and black waves of energy start to form around it, the eyes glow with unholy light... and then a blaze of orange flame bursts in to being, roaring through the distance between Lilith and Brae, futily she holds up the skull like a shield, but the incandescent energy rolls over it and her arm, engulfing her in burning magic and turning her in to a pillar of fire. Her screams echo throughout the chamber for a few agonized seconds before ceasing as she collapses on the floor, a charred and burned out corpse.

Changed your target Euron

The spectacle proves too much of a distraction for Euron, and his polearm scythes through the air next to Radek.

Radek stares at Brae's smoking remains and howls with anguish

Grahhhhh!!!

he lashes out, using his sword like a sledgehammer as he batters down Lachan's defences. His sword catches the Chelaxian soldier on the arm, leaving it numb and tingling and causing 9 damage

While the giant is bent over, reaching down to the now-shattered flagstones, Lives launches a heavy kick at the elbow. Whether he hurts it or not, its much greater mass lifts him into the air, and he uses that momentum to bring his elbow down onto the misshapen, hulking shoulder.

Though it has only been moments since Lives disappeared upstairs into the fortification, to Flynn it feels like an age. He drives his lance home into Radek's gut, sending a jarring tingle all the way from his hands to his shoulders and hot blood spatters over his face as he pulls it free again.

Always he has tried to focus on the problem at hand, but he cannot help but wonder if his friend is alright. As if to answer, there is a tremendous crash from upstairs and a sprinkling of dust cascades onto the party.

Flynn's lance stabs through Radek's back, erupting from his chest in a waterfall of gore, blood fountains from his mouth as he wrenches himself off the wooden shaft and barely dodges the second thrust.

Rolled for you Lachen

Lachen's trident gouges another chunk of flesh from the fallen paladin as he raises his sword in a two handed grip, madness bright in his eyes as he twists in place and prepares to kill the bloodrager.

There is a flash, then another, then another. Radek lurches from side to side like a drunken marionette, before keeling over sideways and collapsing to the floor, three smoking holes in the back of his neck.

upstairs:
You check over the monster and almost can't believe your eyes, you're SURE it's a zombie variant of some kind, slashing weapons are the best thing to use on it... it's just got such a tough hide it's difficult to pierce even with the right weapons to hand...

The undead horror roars in frustration as it spots the defenceless people behind the Shoanti, who is still preventing it from advancing any further in to the room. Lives is barely aware that Mallis is ushering everyone away up the stairs even as he stares down the creature towering over him.

It turns away to behind itself, seeming to shove the throng of other zombies scattered behind it and trying to push their own way past. Seemingly faster than Lives could imagine, it whips back around, holding one of the other undead and using it like a bludgeon. Unprepared, Lives attempt to duck falls turns in to a desperate attempt to roll with the blow he sees coming but just can;t get away from in time. The animated corpse collides in to him with a meaty smack before the momentum of the giant zombie's attack carries it past and in to the wall, where it disintegrates from the force of the impact.

The improvised attack does 26 points of bludgeoning damage

Flynn swiftly realises the bolts of light that killed Radek flew from Lilith's hands. He also senses rather than sees movement in the darkness over by the pillar.

Nikolai's swiftly cooling body does not appear to have anything resembling an arcane key on it, just his walking stick and a belt-pouch with a sheaf of charcoal drawings in it.

If Lives can hold on for just a little longer, the residents of Solace will have a fighting chance of escaping rather than being easy prey.

The group behind Lives has almost managed to flee, there are just a few stragglers on the stairs that Mallis is desperately coaching and encouraging.

As Euron's magic finishes closing the worst of Lenneth's wounds, she groans as consciousness returns to her, eyes fluttering open to stare in confusion at the concerned faces hovering over her. "Wha..." she manages to gasp before Lachen begins shaking her, his words mixing with Euron's and Flynn's to form a nearly incoherent babble. However, the words, 'heal', 'corpses', and 'fight' filter through and she finally remembers just where she is and what is happening around her.

"Oh...oh we're all still alive! Thank goodness!" she gasps, staggering to her feet. As she looks around, her face pales to see the bodies of Radek, Brae, and Nikolai all lying scattered about the room. "No...Nikolai! And those two...now there's no way to know what their plan was or who their leader is. Damn it to Hell!" she hisses in anger and frustration.

Suddenly, the witch stops in her tracks and her eyes widen in fear as she realizes that she can't seem to feel Indigo's presence in the back of her mind. "Indigo? Indigo!" she cries, finally spotting the little cat lying motionless nearby. Hurrying over, she drops to her knees beside him and frantically checks him over, breathing a sigh of relief when she finally realizes that despite his battered condition he's still breathing and stable.

"Thank you, my Lady...thank you!" she whispers in thanks to Pharasma as tears roll down her cheeks.

Scooping Indigo into her arms, she stands and turns to face the others once more. "It's time to end this. I'll do what I can with my magic; Lives needs our help and we need to activate this device!"

Quickly, she moves to each of her companions and places a hand on them, willing their wounds to close, starting first with Flynn and Skyfall, then Lilith, Euron, and Lachen and finally Indigo and herself.

Fiendish, it's going to take Flynn a minimum of 4 rounds to get back up top, others possibly slightly less. Are we still in rounds here? And if so, do we have a chance of saving Lives from that thing?

Lachen also catches movement over by the pillar, neither he nor Flynn is surprised when a shadowy figure reveals itself... Whisper.

A knife in each hand, she coolly appraises your group, eyes flicking across the room, before one blade vanishes and she reaches in to her tunic, removing a slim fragment of grey-blue crystal a handspan or so long. She places it carefully on the floor, then steps off to the side, backing away until she is close to the southern wall. Finally she points at you, then the rune-covered pillar.

Flynn begins to move off down the corridor towards the ladder, but swiftly hears a commotion and finds most of the Solace community has come down in to the underground space and are clogging the corridor. The halfling ranger looks past the huddled and miserable faces and sees yet more of them coming down the ladder. Short of shouting at them and physically shoving them out of the way and being able to get those on the ladder off, there is simply no path to get back upstairs until they've finished coming down...

Ex-Shoanti Human (RIP)

upstairs:

Backing up and nursing both the fingers that hit the beast, and the shoulder that it hit, lives , weaving and dodging, spares it a puzzled look. Then, with a half-amused, half-resigned look, he alters his stance, abandoning offense for a wide-open, balanced stance from which he can move in any direction swiftly.

"Not done yet, my rotting friend!" he taunts in a sing-song voice. "Come on, then! he shouts, tone changing to a full-throated battlecry. He follows up with shouted insults, the vilest curses of his harsh native language - any speakers of the Shoanti language in earshot must surely be scandalized...

Taunting the creature, Lives tries to delay it, dodging the massive fists best he can, keeping its attention on him, and keeping it in the way of the horde behind it.

Move.. get... out of the way. OUT OF THE WAY!! Flynn roars, trying to simultaneously squeeze between the panicked bodies and push them aside.

It's no use, I can't get through. Use the machine, do whatever you need to, it's our only chance! he shouts back, swinging up onto Skyfall to try and make himself heard.

Fly. How else? he says dumbfounded before turning back to the crowd. Get out of the way!

Skyfall is medium sized. If we can climb it without squeezing she can fly it

Lenneth stares at the fragment on the ground. "The focus point...the focus point for the device!" she exclaims. Moving forward, she carefully bends down to pick it up. As she does, she looks up at Whisper. "Thank you. I don't know if you're with us or not, but I'm glad that you're against them."

Her attention is caught by a commotion coming from behind them and the sound of Flynn and Lachen's voices carrying over what sounds like a dull roar. "Wha-are they all coming down here? Then Lives is stuck up top, they can't get through to him!" She turns to Lilith and passes the focus crystal to her. "We're out of time, we have to try and activate this thing now! You're more studied than I am, what do we have to do to get it to work?"

Even as she speaks, Lenneth gives the device another look, attempting to figure out how to actually activate it. Surely it wasn't a matter of simply popping the crystal into place, was it?

Kn. Arcana: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

Not sure what sort of Knowledge checks besides Arcana would be needed or if any additional checks are needed at this point.

upstairs:
This time around, the monstrosity puts its head down and charges, arms wide. It makes little contact with Lives, but forces him to give ground or be trampled. After some rapid footwork, he remains further unharmed, but he and the hulking mass of undead giant are now in the middle of the hall, and the doorway is now unobstructed.

There is still a table that Lives could try to use to shove against the doorway if he dodges around the big zombie, or else he could try defending the stairs that lead up to the next floor.

Despite Flynn and Lachan's shouts, the people are terrified, and despite their wish to get out of the way, just cower to the side without really clearing much space. A rattled looking Ashleigh rushes up to Flynn.

It's coming! Shayliss' baby! Help please!! she implores

He can see Shayliss led down on the corridor floor, she starts crying out in pain again.

Lenneth and Lilith (and anyone else getting 20+ on their know (arcane) check) realise that adding the fragment of crystal, despite it being vital to the process, is not enough by itself. At some stage there was probably a more elgant way of activating it, but for now it needs a magical 'jump start' of sorts. Positive energy needs to be cast in to the crystal sliver once it is in place, then presumably the hybrid divine-arcane machinery will do the rest.

Euron rushes over to the crystal with Lenneth, Looking at her he seeks answers she's not even sure of. "Lenneth, we have to activate it now if someone has to do it just tell me what to do and i will!" He shouts out places his hands on the crystals as he hears the panicked screams and the fighting up stairs. It has to work now!

"It needs a-a boost to get going, positive energy...maybe...?" A look of resolve comes over the witch's face and she glances over at Lilith. "Pop the crystal in there; I've got an idea. Maybe my healing power, cast into the crystal, will be enough to suffice," she says, her voice oddly calm despite the chaos around them. "If not, you may need to add your healing power as well, Euron. I can't think of any other way to power the thing."

Once Lilith has seated the crystal into it's receptacle, Lenneth calls out, "I don't know if this will work or not, but BRACE YOURSELVES!" She then focuses her will on the crystal focus point, attempting to cast her healing power into it.

Healing Hex (Crystal): 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (6, 5) + 5 = 16

Derp, I forgot that Lilith is off at GenCon until Monday when I said that Lenneth passed the crystal to her. I'll let GM Fiendish make the call on whether to proceed now or wait until Monday and see if Lilith wants to do anything/make any suggestions!

Flynn looks at Ashleigh with incredulity;

What the hell can I do? You need to handle it Ashleigh. You can do it, just keep her calm and do what you can. I have to get up top.

He continues trying to bull through the crowd to the ladder up.

Can't hold up the game for several days waiting for one player, wouldn't be fair on the rest of you. Not to worry though :)

Ashleigh looks with scared surprise at Flynn, before her brow furrows in anger as she dodges past him headed for the chamber where the rest of the party still are. Flynn has a choice, he can either keep carefully picking his way past the people, treating the area as difficult terrain, or else he can bully his way through, effectively charging and shoving them out the way, which *will* cause them injury, but allow him to get back up that ladder much quicker.

Ashleigh bursts in to the entrance to the chamber, a question dying on her lips as she surveys the room and the glowing runes. At that moment, the crystal *snicks* in to place, held there by Lilith and Euron, who can feel it vibrating under their hands. As Lenneth opens the pathway to her powers and casts them forth at the crystal, the world seems to lurch. The runes in the room dim and the pillar itself starts to pulse in a rapid and unpredictable pattern, the light shifting from bright cobalt to darkest indigo and back as fractures start to show, bleeding black light and making everyone in the room bright in stark contrast.

The shadows in the pit become suddenly deeper, and there is the unmistakeable presence of something otherworldly in the room... the dust sifting down from above slows... then hangs in the air as the woeld becomes eerily silent for a few moments... and then three voices speak, iron nails on glass, wolf's breath on the back of your neck, the whispers of secrets never told...

Daughter, your power is great but stems from shadow not light...our presence is unwelcome and threatens the very foundations of this place...

...you must sacrifice life to stave off death, ever has it been the way of the world...

...your companion holds the key in his soul, a gate opened by the lady of graves herself

The world crashes back, the dust falls again and noise returns with a roar. The room starts to shake, as the pulsing runes dancing around the chamber continue to dim and brighten in an uncontrolled and chaotic fashion...

Oh lord, Lenneth broke the thing even further...alas, she's smarter than she is wise and the pressure to do *something* did not help. Going to post under the assumption that everyone heard the voices and not just her.

As the pillar begins to pulse, Lenneth's face first lights up with hope...quickly replaced by dismay and horror as everything starts to go wrong, the device apparently going haywire from the mixed energy that was cast into it. She slowly backs away from the pillar as the three unearthly voices speak, raising the hair on the back of her neck and chilling the blood in her veins.

"No...no! It's no use, the device won't accept my power! It's tearing it apart!" Desperately, she turns to Euron and Lilith, the only two that might have some sort of way of putting things right once more. "Do something, quick!" she begs. "Maybe the reaction can be set right with power from...from light, not shadow," she finishes, hanging her head. "There's nothing more I can do. I'm sorry," she whispers, fearing that she may have just doomed them all.
