Polonius Fynch |
Kaiya, come to me, honey. Don't worry about controlling them. Don't worry about anything. Just come to me so I can take you home.
Polonius remembers the spell he cast to signal his friends and manifests another ball of flame, hurling it down at one of the groaners threatening his friends.

Indigo the Cat |
Climb: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Indigo tries, but is unable to find purchase with his claws, scrabbling uselessly at the wall of the barn. He looks around for an easier way up or to at least see if he can spot Polonius or the child.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Sorry for the delay, long and busy day...
GM Fiendish |
Lilith easily spots Kaiya across the other side of the barn's loftspace, Lilith's bolt of white energy engulfs one of the zombie's attacking Euron and the lifeless corpse drops to the floor, unmoving.
Polonius' ball of flame strikes the groaner menacing Tali, she recoils from the burst of flame that takes mere seconds to burn through the zombie's skull and end its existence. She glances up at Polo, with an unreadable expression, then takes two quick steps to dance around the remaining zombie menacing her and Valex, lashing out and scoring a blow to its side.
Indigo's claws can't quite find purchase on the wet wood, but his keen eyes spot Polo and Kaiya in the rafters.

Valex takes advantage of the Tali's strike and tries to chop down on the zombie's shoulder.

The blade slices cleanly through the zombie, leaving it lying in two twitching pieces.

Kaiya hesitates, evidently having heard the pleas for her to stay. She is sat straddling a beam, crossbow dangling from one hand as she holds on with the other.
But...but I attacked you! Why don't you hate me!? she cries out in desperation, loud enough to make one zombie turn its head before it returns to the solemn business of trying to eviscerate Azmerai, but failing to land any blows.
The zombie left behind when Euron moved to cast his healing charges the oracle the moment he summoned the healing energy. Desperate to sink his teeth in to the human, he attempts to grapple but cannot quite get a grip as Euron fends him off.
Lilith's pit spell expires, and the zombies trapped rise back to the courtyard. Immediately spotting Lenneth they eagely surge forward only to find the very mud they walk across dragging at their feet.

Valex |
I am back! Thanks, all!
know/Rel: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Fiendish, is that enough to identify our shuffling dead friends, so that I can bestow the bard bonus?
Lenneth Barlow |
Glancing over her shoulder, Lenneth pales to see the four additional groaners now free of Lilith's pit spell and very slowly heading her way. Taking a step forward in order to put a little more distance between them, she moves behind Euron. She takes aim with her sling at the lone groaner that isn't being engaged and looses another stone.
Attack (Sling): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Attacking the zombie that's two spaces above Azmerai on the map!
Indigo the Cat |
Noting that the groaners have ignored him so far, Indigo studies the walls of the barn...seeing a spot that he might be able to latch on to, he prepares himself and leaps...
Climb: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
At last, his claws seem to find purchase in the wood!
If he can, Indigo will climb onto the rafters and attempt to move towards Kaiya; if it seems like she might react in a hostile manner or do something that will endanger herself then he'll stop and hold his ground.
Euron Velren |
Feeling better Euron presses the Attack as he see's the other zombies fall. Hoping to clear them up before the ones behind close in on them. Let's get this done fast!

Polonius Fynch |
Realising that Kaiya will not come to him, Polonius steps out onto the beam and moves quickly over to he, stopping just short and offering a hand.
It's alright. Don't think about anything else except my hand. Just reach up and take it and we'll get far away from here.
GM Fiendish |
Valex, zombies (at least this 'run of the mill' sort), can be considered ubiquitous to the setting, incredibly common. I'm going to say for normal zombies you don't have to make a roll at all!
Azmerai's strike hits the zombie so hard it practically disintegrates under the blow, the skeletal structure collapsing and the force of the impact sending decaying limbs exploding outwards from the destroyed corpse. Lenneth's slingstone catches the undead on the jaw, but ricochets off in to the barn somewhere, the zombie turns its head back and staggers towards the witch. It meet's Euron's swinging blade and is neatly bisected, falling in two pieces to the floor where it continues to snap futily until Euron's boot crushes it in a final blow. Lenneth is momentarily distracted as she feels Indigo's mind brush against hers now he is up in the rafters of the barn, scant feet from Kaiya...This one smells of ashes and death, they travel with her like a second skin...
Finally maneuvering in to an advantageous position and flanking with Valex, Tali executes a simple double slash with her serrated blades, opening up large gashes across the zombie's back and severing the spinal column causing it to fall to the floor unmoving. She glances up from the body, over Valex's shoulder and shouts
Watch out!
Glancing behind her, Lenneth is shocked to discover the groaners scant feet away from her. They lunge and snarl at her, trying to drive her to the ground. One manages to bludgeon the poor witch's shoulder with bone crushing force 7 damage to Lenneth
Up in the rafters, a very scared and confused Kaiya sees Indigo and Polonius, and seeming to make a decision, reaches out towards the gnome's offered hand. Just then, the rain and wind intensifies, blowing a gale outside and causing the barn to sway horrifyingly. Kaiya reaches out, and one hand still holding her crossbow, loses her balance and starts to fall...
Polonius, please make a climb check or reflex save DC 15 to catch her...

Feeling spend and somewhat helpless, Lilith does what she can do. In this case she casts her disrupt undead at the zombies attacking Lenneth. Fall back! she cries as she fires off her spell.

Lenneth Barlow |
Lenneth cries out in pain and surprise as the groaners suddenly loom out of the darkness, having made their way out of her quagmire sooner than anticipated. She bolts forward, moving past her companions and into the barn. As she does, she's faintly aware of Indigo's link to her mind, sensing foreboding in his thoughts concerning the little girl...and suddenly, alarm...
Lenneth is withdrawing into the barn...
Euron Velren |
Euron turns to see more undead advance on them. We will be over run soon with no defensible position! Dropping his sickle he reaches for his Guisarm picking it up as he steps to cover Lenneth's retreat, waiting for the undead to come to him and pick them off.
I'll wait where i am and hope to pick off some with AOO - I also assume i would have no change at catching Kaiya? or helping?
Polonius Fynch |
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Everything in the world slows.
Polonius watches, with a kind of detached observation, as Kaiya reaches out her hand. Even as she does so, he seems to know what is going to happen. With one hand on that heavy crossbow, the other now reaching for him, she perches on the beam only by the strength of her small knees and when the wind takes her, and discards her from the rafters like some used plaything, Polonius is dismayed but not all all surprised.
He sees her topple and then, seemingly an age later, her hair streams upward as if it were reaching back up to grab the beam and halt her descent.
Colours suddenly grey - all except the pale blue of her eyes.
Sounds suddenly mute - except the horrid keening of her little voice as she falls.
Details all fade - except the fear, like a twisted mask, drawn in sharp, pointed lines on her face.
Everything...in...the...world. Slows.
And yet, despite seeing all this. And having all the time in the world.... Polonius could not catch her.
---------
The world comes rushing back in on him like an avalanche and the dull roar of his own voice is impossible loud in his ears as his hand snakes out... and snatches nothing but air.
KAI-YAAA!
Lilith Sylvari |
Lilith can only watch as the child falls. She does not know the Feather Fall spell so could on cast it even if the use of her bonded item was available to her. No, she could do more. She could be there to help the child as quickly as she can. She watches and prepares to move to the girl.
GM Fiendish |
Lilith's blast of energy half-destroys one zombie as it shambles after the retreating form of Lenneth as she dashes in to the barn.
As Euron backs away and retrieves his weapon, there is a piercing pain in his foot and he realises he has stepped on a caltrop.
1 piercing damage to Euron and as your foot is injured you are now moving at half speed. This movement penalty lasts for 24 hours, until someone treats you with a DC 20 Heal check or until you receive at least 1 point of magical healing
The zombies surge forward and fall upon the defenders standing in the doorway.
Euron you have an AoO against the zombie next to you, if you hit AC 15 and cause at least 8 points of damage then you can prevent it assualting you, otherwise it gets through your defences and inflicts 5 damage
Groaning and gnashing their teeth, another one manages to land a blow on Valex causing 6 damage. The others slide in the mud and lose their footing, unable to get near enough to do damage. Tali moves between Valex and Azmerai, stabbing with her knives to defend them both.
Suddenly everyone hears the twin cries of anguish and fear from Kaiya and Polonius, and a shape falls from the dark ceiling, collapsing as it strikes the floor with a thud.
Inside the barn, near the back wall, lies an unmoving Kaiya on the packed earth floor. Pieces of her crossbow are scattered nearby, smashed and splintered.
I'm sorry Euron, Kaiya was on the far (east) side of the barn. So when she fell, because of your injured foot even were you to double move, she was still too far away. If it's any consolation, Euron would not have seen what was happening in the dark rafters due to his human vision :(

"Remember, friends, edges! Neck and spine are good targets!"
+1 insight bonus to AC and on attack rolls and saving throws vs the zombies.
Lilith Sylvari |
Taking advantage of her height Lilith fires at a wounded zombie before moving back toward Polo and Kaiya. You can do more good for them up here than down there. she tells herself as she dismisses her urge to join Polo on the ground.
Range Touch: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 1 + 1 = 241d6 ⇒ 4

Damage: 2d4 + 4 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (3, 1) + 4 + 3 + 1 = 12
We are clearing them! we might just have this!
No problem Fiendish! I wasn't 100% sure on lighting.
Lenneth Barlow |
Lenneth feels her heart stop as she hears the anguished cries from Polonius and Kaiya and can barely glimpse something crashing to the floor of the barn some feet ahead of her. She conjures up four glowing spheres of light so that she and the rest of her companions are able to see within the barn. Dancing Lights
As the lights coalesce into being, she is horrified to see Kaiya's small form on the ground, lifeless. Nononononotthisnotthis! She rushes to the girl's side but takes care to not move her until she can assess her injuries and whether she's still alive or not.
Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
If Lenneth can't do the Heal check this round, then she will on the next one!
GM Fiendish |
Lilith's positive energy blast hits the same zombie as her previous one, leaving it nothing but a normal corpse as the necromantic energy animating it is destroyed.
Euron smashes the zombie moving towards him, and drives another in to the ground for good measure. Tali finishes the last one, driving a knife in to its eye socket then wrenching it free in a practiced move. She shouts over her shoulder
I'm not sure how long Lenneth's spell will hold the others in that farmhouse, or whether all this noise will attract others from around, we need to move now!
Lenneth's spell illuminates the barn sufficiently for Polonius, Lilith and Lenneth to see the small robed figure in a heap, she's not moving. One scarred hand is outstretched and poking out of the sleeve of her robe. Aside from some of her curly hair escaping from the hood, you cannot see her current status.
Combat Over
Lenneth reaches her at the same time as Polonius does, scampering down the wall with the last of his magical movement. Gingerly they roll her over, gently peeling back her hood and checking for life. Kaiya's face and body have large patches of white and shiny skin, and they both instantly realise she is covered in healed burn scars.
Lilith Sylvari |
There is a dozen more at least. And those are the ones we have seen. Zombies are slow at least. Lets get out of here!. Lilith maintains her perch for now looking for a threat and trying to resist the urge to try to hole up in this barn. The barn is a trap. she keeps telling herself.
Valex |
"I know that it's wet, but we should try to fire the barn - it should hold the attention of any wandering groaners in the area while we make our escape.
Gods, I can barely ask...is the girl living yet? I have healing yet to offer..."
Euron Velren |
Euron looking around and seeing no more undead, crashes to his knees lettng out a sharp cry as he finally sucomes to the pain in his foot. "Caltrop.." He attempts to pull the caltrop out and patch up his foot. We can't afford me slowing everyone down.
Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
"I should be ok, its not pretty but it will work. I wont slow us down." He stumbles to his feet, and walks over to the others looking down at the young girl. "Good idea Valex we should try and do that fast, but we have to move. Is she ok?" He attempts to look over the others crowded around the little girl.
Indigo the Cat |
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Unable to discern anything over the sounds of the driving rain, Indigo attempts to clamber back down the rafters and join back up with his mistress and her friends as they gather around Kaiya's still form.
Climb: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Once back on solid ground, he pads over to Lenneth and the rest. He looks at Kaiya and then to his mistress.
"Maow..."
Couldn't help...Sorry...
Lenneth Barlow |
I won't roll the Heal check again since I rolled for her last round.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 + 2 = 17
"I don't know...I don't know!" Lenneth cries, struggling to keep her fear and frustration in check. "Those burns..." she can't help but whispering. Taking a deep, shuddering breath, she says, "Okay. We need to move...take Kaiya with us and set this barn on fire like Valex says. Hopefully it will keep anything in the area occupied long enough for us to put some distance between us and this place."
Is Kaiya still alive? I'm assuming so, but I don't want to write much more without being certain.
GM Fiendish |
Taking precious seconds that they could have been using to run, Polonius and Lenneth examine Kaiya's body. She has multiple broken bones, ribs are crunchy, one leg is twisted at an unnatural angle, and there is no response when she is shaken on the shoulder.
Euron patches up his foot, and as he tosses the crudely made metal caltrop to the side, sees the entire doorway is littered with them. The party had better move carefully through this way if no one else is to be injured. Euron also recalls Azmerai was limping in the fight, perhaps he hasn't noticed his injury due to the rage he was fighting in.
Indigo sniffs Kaiya's form and twitches his nose, whiskers dancing in the air and throwing myriad shadows over everything in the barn as the magical lights in each corner of the room spin and glow slightly brighter for a moment.
Mind dark, body still...
he looks at you with big eyes
She dances with shadows now mistress...
He ghosts over to Lenneth and waits to be picked up
Euron Velren |
"Azmari, let me check your foot there were caltrops around here. If your slow we won't make it far." He kneels down and begins to treat the the half-orc.
Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Unable to pull the caltrop out he turns to the others. "Is she stable? If she is, we have to move I can't get this caltrop out how long do we have left?" He glances back at the house.
perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
GM Fiendish |
Kaiya remains unresponsive to Polonius no matter what he tries.
Euron recognises the caltrops as a particularly nasty barbed sort designed to be difficult to pull out. Either time or magical healing was going to be needed to get Azmerai's foot back to normal. Looking back at the farmhouse, Lenneth's web spell is still holding strong and likely will be for another 20 minutes, however Euron can hear the groans of approaching undead. This is the only landmark for miles, and there has been quite the noise and light show here tonight. This place has become a beacon for zombies, the more time passes, the more there will be out there.
Lenneth's power flows down her arm, and to her surprise she encounters resistance, something she's never felt before.
Polonius Fynch |
Polonius mood darkens ever more as Kaiya remains unresponsive. He has a churning in the pit of his stomach and the iron taste of blood in his mouth.
He realises he is biting so hard on his lip that a small trickle of blood runs down his chin.
Come on Kaiya, don't leave us again...
He works frantically but for some reason his eye is drawn to a small silver necklace around her neck.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Euron Velren |
Cursing as he hears more undead move in on them he turns to look at Lenneth hearing her shout out, he nods to Azmeria and then quickly runs over to the others. "Let me help, maybe if we all try our healing together we can hopefully overcome whatever is happening to her." He then places his hand on the small girl and calls through his divine gifts to heal her.
Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Valex |
Valex's head whips up at Lenneth's shout, and he races over toward her, expending his last spell on the broken child.
CLW 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
GM Fiendish |
Polonius, now he can see it better, realises the necklace is in the shape of a skeletal hand...the symbol of the Whispering Way...
Lenneth's connection starts to fail, the healing magic unable to prevail and fading fast, when suddenly another boost is provided as Euron's energy joins forces and begins to rally. Sweat beads on the witch and oracle as they try to push the healing energy in, it feeling like forcing a candle through an oak door. Even with both of them concentrating hard, the black tendrils of dark and vile magics wrap themselves around Kaiya, almost like a protective embrace. Unbelievably the healing cannot find a way in, searching for weakness where there was none, when suddenly Valex is there, adding his own forces to the struggle. With the sudden spike of power the cocoon of blackest night cracks open, and the positive enrgy of life floods through the gap in to the child...
Kaiya gasps and shudders, then lies still again. Her chest is now rising and falling, very shallow but regular. She remains unconscious and unresponsive, alive, for now.
Euron, in the scant moments you have you are not able to discern anything new about this condition. Short of studying the child in an alchemist's lab or employing divination magic it is unlikely you will be able to determine what is going on with her. By all accounts she should be dead.
Groaners! Ten or more, 50 feet away! shouts Tali back in to the barn from her lookout post next to the wide open doors.
We need to go!
Valex |
Valex grips Polo's shoulder fiercely, almost convulsively, his face split by the broadest grin anyone had ever seen on the academic. He quietly says to the gnome "Lets get her home, now! I'll carry her. I can still give advice with my hands full..."
He bends down to gently retrieve the child, and stands, ready to follow his friends out into the night.
Euron Velren |
Euron sighs in relief, for a split second something good happened but is plagued by something that just isn't right. She should be dead, no matter the healing we gave her.. That relief is quickly overshadowed as he looks out to see all the undead massing on them.
"There's no time to think! Just move!" He shouts out taking up he weapon and begins to lead the group out of the farm.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Survival: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
GM Fiendish |
Valex picks up Kaiya, her body seems too light to be real, her face a mask of shadow.
As Polonius reaches the barn entrance and picks up his belt, he sees the group has mere seconds to leave before a group of zombies, at least a dozen, swarms the barn entrance.
Hustling out in to the night, the group moves as quickly as it can, darting between groups of two or three zombies, doubling back when your way is blocked by a larger group, then finally seeing an empty pathway away from the farm. As you move off, tired and soaked to the bone from the icy rain, you have to decide where you will head to. West back to Solace or South, towards the place marked on the map in the farmhouse?
You are undergoing a forced march to stay ahead of the herd of undead trying to catch you. Please make 2 Constitution checks at DC 14 and DC 16. Valex you are carrying Kaiya, your DCs are 16 and 18 :( Failures will result in 1d6 non-lethal damage and the fatigued condition. This condition will vanish if the non-lethal damage is eliminated by either resting or magical healing.
