Someone has been through here. It can't have been Meiko, I doubt she had the strength to stand by the end. I want to double check these tunnels. I think you should stay here Euron, I don't know how stable they are now.

He ducks down into the tunnel but first drinks his extract of Shield just in case.

Euron starts to speak but cuts himself off as Polo decides to go off down the tunnel. "We should stick together.." He then gets to his knees, hoping the air is clearer and shouts down the tunnel. "Don't go to far! Call me if you need help!" Then turning back to look at the smoke filled room unsure of what to do next other than wait for polos return.

"Do you see that?", Lenneth whispers. "It's like they're being directed...where would they be going?" She continues to watch for groaners or other signs of trouble, but another thought occurs to her and she turns her head in the direction of the church.

The church seemed made of stone and was gated...could we seek sanctuary there again, if we live that long?

(KILLED IN ACTION) | Gnome | Alchemist 4

What are you doing Polo? This woman is nothing to you. Nor is the child.

As he pulls himself along the smoke filled tunnel, the thoughts and doubts keep plaguing him. Resurfacing like a bad copper piece.

Why are you trying to kill yourself to save them? They aren't Ben. They aren't family.

The tunnel is pitch black, not that it makes much difference to him. Even without the smoke he sees everything in shades of grey.

He doesn't know where he is going, surely the tunnel isn't still intact and why did he tell Euron to stop? If anything is down here waiting for him the warrior's blade would surely be useful.

Is it trust? Maybe. Who can you really trust these days? Is this Meiko going to be any better? Is she going to be able to help you get back to Ben?

Maybe, maybe not. But I broke my word so many times when Amelia was alive and Benvolio was with us, I won't do it now. I said I would help Meiko and I said I would come back for Kaiya. Kaiya.... please be safe...

Despite the heat and smoke he presses on.

Lenneth and Lilith's magically attuned senses detect a thrum in the air, like a very strong but very simple effect is happening around them.

Spellcraft DC 14:
Necromantic enegies are blanketing the area, someone or something is working magic, which may be responsible for the increased levels of undead you have seen in the past minute or two. You both get the sensation of being very...unsafe here in Sandpoint

It appears all the undead are moving towards the northern end of the town, towards the church.

***

Polonius crawls through the cellar tunnel, emerging in to the stables and freezing still, scant feet in front of him are a dozen or so groaners. Eyes frantically taking everything in, Polo can see each one is tied in place with a thin piece of twine, enough to keep them wandering off, but not enough to stop them should they spot prey...

Stealth check please, DC 12...

***

Valex uses a small splinter of wood to wedge the tripwire as he cuts it with his knife. In his haste however the sawing motion dislodges the temporary stopper and he hears a click followed by a whoosh, as a battleaxe smashes through the door and slices at him!

Reflex save DC 16 or take : 1d12 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 slashing damage. It's fortunate the door stopped a lot of the momentum of the axe...

Inside the room, the walls are already smoking with little fires flickering in to existence, and the only other feature of interest is a grimy glass window across the room. As the heat builds you think you have time to grab either a small battered chest (has a lock on it and rattles like multiple hard things are inside) or else an armful of clothes from the only one of the piles scattered around that isn't currently smoldering...

***

Azmerai watches the fire lick away at the moldy curtains, it is lucky he remained in the downstairs area, as he watches the flames dance across the floor, headed for the oil dangerously close to the oil spilled behind the bar. In a few seconds this room will be completely awash with flames and no use as an exit for anyone inside...

***

Euron looks around, taking in the surroundings of the cellar whilst he waits for Polo to reappear. You can see a small barrel (sloshes like there is liquid inside), a small wooden crate of oil canisters or an old discarded satchel that seems stuffed with papers. He could probably take one of those without unduly impacting his ability to run if need be...

"Something terrible is happening...we need to get out of this town! It isn't safe!" she hisses. "If any of them make it out of the inn, we need to find somewhere to retreat to - the woods or possibly the lighthouse. I'd hoped the church might still be a safe place, but that's where all those groaners are headed!"

Lenneth turns to gaze at the burning inn, wishing to aid her companions still inside but feeling sick with knowing that there's little that she can do at this point.

Please let them all make it out....please...

As he catches sight of the walkers up ahead, Polo's breath catches in his throat.

Is there a way passed these things or do they block the way completely? If there is a way passed Polo will continue on.

Looking around the room Euron see's old satchel and is drawn to it, he quickly slings it around his shoulder and heads back to the tunnel. "Polo! where are you? We need to get out of here. I don't know where the others are, we can't split up!" Waiting for a response, Euron looks around the room again feeling something bad about to happen and for the first time in a long time the feeling of loneliness and being helpless wash over him. Being on my own got to easy

As he sneaks along the corridor, Polo says a string of silent curse in his head when Euron calls out.

For lack of a better idea, Lenneth begins scanning the more immediate vicinity in an effort to look for anything that might prove useful now that most of the group's supplies have been lost. In particular, she keeps an eye out for any small stones that might serve as sling bullets to replace the ones she's used since arriving in town.

Finally got around to updating Lenneth's gear to reflect what she took with her, what she's found, and what was lost in the fire. Checking previous posts it turns out that she took her compass with her after all! But all her food and artisan's tools still went up in smoke :(

Euron's shout makes the groaners turn to look, but Polo stays as still as a statue and they have yet to notice him. He fears there are simply too many to safely negotiate the room to the other side, he'd be swarmed for sure.

Euron looks about, there is another small tunnel that leads off in to the darkness, the opposite way Polo went. It smells damp.

Valex avoids the pendulum trap with ease, and darts through the door with speed. Inside the room, the walls are already smoking with little fires flickering in to existence, and the only other feature of interest is a grimy glass window across the other side of the room. As the heat builds you think you have time to grab either a small battered chest (has a lock on it and rattles like multiple hard things are inside) or else an armful of clothes from the only one of the piles scattered around that isn't currently smoldering...

Azmerai shouts out a warning about something just as there is an almighty *whoosh* and a torrent of heated air surges over everyone inside the inn. Valex can see from the doorway that the entire stairwell has been engulfed in flames, there's no getting back out that way. Euron likewise sees the top of the cellar steps burning fiercely, it's doubtful he and Polo would survive running back through.

The witch and wizard waiting outside have front row seats to a stunning fiery explosion that knocks the front door of the inn off its hinges and sends gouts of flame shooting out of every ground floor window. Hopefully the rest of the party wasn't standing in that room...

Lenneth is able to find: 1d4 ⇒ 1 stones of the correct size from the riverbank whilst she's waiting for the others.

Lilith wracks her brain, but to her knowledge the only goblin stronghold she knows of is the one from the goblin map she looked at yesterday.

As he creeps back passed the zombies, the explosion rocks the entire building. he is thrown from his feet and against a wall which he hits with a loud Humph..!

With the monsters only steps behind, he doesn't even turn to look whether they heard him fall or not and simply sprints as fast as he is able back down the tunnel.

At least I can run down here, hopefully they'll have to squeeze through.

With each pounding step his mind begins to race.

What the hell was that explosion? Are they all dead? Forget about it, I'll be dead if I don't get a move on!

He sees Euron ahead, peering into the other tunnel and as he approaches he shouts out;

Move Euron, they are right behind me! Fly, now!

Not knowing whether he is running into a dead end and certain doom, Polonius says a silent prayer for deliverence.

Lenneth glances up from her search of the ground just in time to see an explosion rock the first floor of the inn and send flames roaring from every available opening. She gasps in surprise and horror at the thought of her friends still in there and whispers a prayer to anyone that is listening that they somehow made it out of the blast.

Trying to salvage at least something from the inferno, be it a good peace of wood, a tankard or else, Azmerai retreats to safety ready to lend support to others. Am also a bit confused, I must have missed a map and I am a bit clueless where we are, where is an exit, etc

Valex is able to kick open the window, and lowering himself with one hand is able to witness the floor he was just standing on burst in to flame along with the scattered clothing. Lilith and Lenneth see Valex dropping down from the window, angry tongues of fire chasing him out of the building. Spotting you, he moves over to join you, a safe distance from the fierce blaze.

Euron and Polonius head down the tunnel, it looks disused but may once have been an aid to smugglers trying to avoid customs tax judging from the scrapes on the walls of many crates being moved through here. The two men pull themselves through the final tight fitting turn and are met with a wall of grassy vegetation. Peeking their heads out they can see Lenneth and Lilith 30 feet away, and Valex running towards them.

There is an uncomfortably long moment, as everyone realises Azmerai is missing...

Then out of the flaming maw of the inn, exterior timbers already charred, the half-orc comes walking towards the group, one foot in front of the other at a deliberate pace. He appears to be clutching a blackened pewter tankard with a dragon emblazoned on it. Just as he opens his mouth to speak, there is a massive, loud noise of creaking and suffering wood, followed by a huge crashing sound as the inn falls in on itself.

You stare at the fire for a moment, engulfing the sanctuary you enjoyed over the last few days, and realise that with all that noise it's only a matter of time before all the groaners in the area make their way to your location. With the entire town either burning or groaner-saturated, you had better decide where to move to next, and quickly...

This wasn't a good place. Polonius spits out a mixture of dirt and grime. It was damned from the start. We're worse off now than when we arrived. he says, thoughts turning to Kaiya and Meiko and Turrey and Shomari.

But I'm glad Valex and Euron are with us at least. That was a close call back there. he says to the warrior.

The Yondabakari river is south of here. I say we follow it as far as this goblin place. At least we might have better luck fishing than we have scavenging. If we can trade for supplies there then great but ultimately, I'm heading to that castle. I think my son is there. And if those goblins aren't willing to trade and I have to take what I need from them then I will.

He then looks down at this weapon gripping it tighter. "I have no where to go so I will follow. There was a reason we all met, I've had a vision Phrasma blessed me with the last of her power. I haven't met anyone with a Divine connection since the harvest, there was a reason I found you all so I won't be leaving you. We should take stock of what we have and set off soon."

He then steps over to Lenneth. "Let me look at your wounds, I can heal you a little." He the places his hands on her wounds gently.

"There's that lighthouse we saw when we came up out of those tunnels; it could be a temporary shelter but there's no way of knowing what sort of shape it's in without having a look inside. And it's still awfully close to the town...that crazy talking groaner could come back."

Valex:

From what you can remember, the lighthouse wasn't heavily utilised or used as a domicile. At best it might serve as a temporary stopover point, but certainly nowhere you could stay indefinitely, not to mention there only being one way in or out via the peninsula path.

Lenneth:

There was a war here several centuries ago, and the stone castle map picture would tally with a ruined castle you remember in that location that fell in that war. How much of it remains and how well it could be secured are unknown, but it was a large place complete with bailey and moat. If it has been secured by someone, there would likely be enough breathing room for vegetable patches and even some livestock farming it it was made safe. Definitely a viable option, even if someone else has already started working on it.

Euron:

The flora and fauna typically found in this area would likely sustain a group of your size as long as you foraged every day. You're aware the animals in the region have been thinned out by the groaners, but you're still fairly sure there would be enough to eat and drink to get you where you're going.

Your foraging turns up a blackberry bush hidden by an overgrown hedge just on the border of the forest. It's meager pickings but enough for a handful for each person, a light lunch but at least it's something.

The rest of the town is burnt, all the shops, homes and outbuildings have gone with it. The groaners were already thronging the church, and without the protective magics of the chalice it is likely it will now also get overrun. Whatever supplies and shelter there were here in Sandpoint has literally gone up in smoke.

According to the map versus the real world terrain, it will take a week to get through the mountains to the goblin lair, and a further week from there to where the stone castle is pictured. If you went direct down the road bypassing the mountains then you could be at the castle in 10 days.

It is mid-afternoon, and without shelter you are best served by departing from this place before nightfall...

Polo starts trudging away from the oppressive heat of the burning town. Once they cross the river that marks the boundary of Sandpoint, he turns once more to the others.

So do you want to follow the road or the river? We are more likely to run into other survivors on the road - but I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Lilith: The items borrowed from Meiko were a Ring of Maniacal Devices and a cloak (which is unidentified at this time but when you have a few minutes anyone with Spellcraft can try to identify it again). No idea who is carrying them though!

You'll have to decide a couple of things for your journey, to whit who is taking which of the below roles. You can always change these later, or even day to day if you like, but it will be my 'go to' list. More than one person can do each role and just say if you want to do something different!

Scout: Traveling ahead of everyone else, you'll be responsible for keeping the party going in the right direction and spotting danger before it spots you (survival/perception)
Forager: Finding signs of edible vegetation as you travel, setting traps/snares whilst you sleep to hopefully catch some small game (survival)
Vanguard: The person keeping watch at the back (perception)

Feel free to invent other roles/things to do and convinve me your skills can be used in interesting ways, the above is just to get us going!

The road or the river seems a good choice to begin, which way will you go?

Survival and perception roll from whoever is scouting please

For now I will assume Lilith has the cloak so she can keep trying to identify it. With our rogue gone who should carry that ring? Note that Lilith actually has both ring slots filled. One is her bonded item and the other is her starting item - a ring that can produce light for about 10 minutes.

In a spare moment when she feels unthreatened Lilith considers the cloak.

"If we decide to follow the road, I think we should do it from the cover of the woods as much as possible. That way we can watch for survivors or groaners on the road but have some cover if we run into something dangerous and need to hide. Personally? My vote is for following the river; the farther away from what's left of the civilized areas, the less likely we are to run into looters -or- groaners."

As she speaks, Lenneth turns away from Sandpoint - though she's seen plenty of death since the Red Harvest, bearing witness to the death of a town is something she prays she never has to endure again.

I've been thinking. Perhaps Euron and I should take the lead. His eyes are sharp and I can move quietly when I need to. But Azmerai is right, if we don't start finding food soon were finished. I think he and Valex and Lenneth could forage and Lillith, you know that thong that bit you is still out there. For some reason I don't think we're done with it so you can keep a close eye for anything following from the town. What do you all think?

Lilith:

Trickster cloak:

This nondescript dark grey hooded cloak looks well-used and cheap, under magical scrutiny it barely detects as magical. Further study of it reveals its true purpose however, as an aid to con artists, thieves and ne'er-do-wells of all colours. Inside the cloak are a number of threads attached to badly embroidered pictures of all sorts of items. Pulling a thread as a move action will cause the patch to vanish and the relevant object to pop out of the cloak and appear in the user's hand. The catch is that each item only lasts 2d6 minutes before crumbling in to a pile of fine white plaster dust.

The spaces inside the cloak show that when it was first created it held dozens of patches, however these have been depleted over the years. The remaining patches are:
a masterwork dagger
a 50 ft coil of silken rope
a set of masterwork thieve's tools
a ruby-studded ring worth 1000gp
a bag of caltrops
a scroll of spider climb
a folding table
a housecat

Chapter 2: Finding Solace

Putting one foot in front of the other, you step away from the town of Sandpoint, leaving it to its own funeral pyre.

Following the course of the river, you put as much distance between you and the town as possible. Euron is able to guide you through the sometimes dense forest, even when travel next to the river is blocked by cliff or vegetation, he is able to navigate around without issue and keep you on course. In addition, several times there were groups of groaners passing by, and good eyesight enabled you to lay low as they passed instead of having to engage them.

Lilith scans the area, making sure that nothing is missed as the party moves over the rural terrain, as well as establishing there are no threats from behind. Whilst initially distracted by the recent events, by the time you stop for the night Lilith is confident the party is not being followed.

Whether it's the new terrain or the exhaustion, Valex has decidedly poor fortune trying to find edible plants, and there are no animals to be found and caught for supper it seems. Stomachs are grumbling, but there are more important matters it seems.

As night falls you realise you're going to be trapped outside with no shelter overnight. Are you sleeping in the open or making the area secure somehow? What watches or precautions are you going to set?

It's about 9pm. Also Polo you are currently fatigued from 48 hours without sleep, it will be a DC 19 fort check if you want to do anything tonight other than sleep, failure will result in your becoming exhausted...

The wizard immediately shares her information on the cloak and offers to wear it and hand out items as people request them.

Lilith once again shares her rations giving everyone a mean but depleting her stores significantly. She offers to help anyone build a shelter by casting Crafter's fortune on them (only works for a craft check but is a +5 bonus).

Would the scroll be around long enough for Lilith to scribe it into her book?
