Jaelynn understood the theory of swimming. She knew, intellectually, how it should work.

Unfortunately, she discovered that there's a fair bit of distance between theory and application. She, too, found herself glad for the rope-and-carabiner arrangement, and did her best to keep up with the others.

Shane swam on into the darkness, keeping a hand on the rope connected forward to whatever or whoever was tugging on it. The darkness and the water pressing on him from all sides was disorienting and a constant distraction, which he dealt with by focusing on moving forward and listening for sounds that could tell him what was happening ahead of him.

Aziel Charbonneau wrote:

Aziel took a good look around for any enemies, then swam forward. "Was it a trap?" she asked, settling on the bottom and trying to get a grip on the nearest stone to lift off his leg.

"More help is on the way," she added, nodding towards the rope he had been jerking. "The rest of your unit?"

Burton shook his head. "I don't know. There was a... the sky was purple! It was a swamp. Crazy colors, yellow frogs. Purple sky. Have you ever seen a purple sky?" Burton seemed to be more than a little delirious, but he answered Aziel's question.

"The purple sky broke the ceiling. They were all in front of me." The goblin gestured further down the tunnel, where Aziel and Tarvak could see nothing but recently settled rock and more dark water. There was enough room that could keep swimming forward toward the mine, but there was no sign of the rest of Unit 6.

As Aziel scrabbled at the silty tunnel floor she realized that Burton's leg was almost certainly crushed, not just broken. If she had a strong lever and a couple of people to help she might be able to shift the rock enough to pull him out.

"I think his leg is stuck until we find a lever of some sort. If you check to see if there is any sign of Unit 6 in the tunnel, I'll..." Aziel trailed off, not certain of what she might do while waiting for the rest of their unit. "Ah, merde. We will need some light." Moving to the back of the cave-in, as far from the mouth of the cave as possible while still shedding light on Burton, Aziel grabbed her sunrod and struck it against a rock.

Tarvak moved thru the gap at the top of the rubble, looking for any signs of Unit 6, what caused the cave-in, or anything unusual in general.

He will go 30 seconds forward, then come back. By that time the rest of Unit 11 should have caught up with Aziel.

Aziel continued to look for a way to free Burton while Tarvak swam ahead. He found no signs of Unit 6 and nothing unusual other than the rock that had been recently redistributed from the ceiling to the floor. A good 60 feet of tunnel ceiling had fallen to the floor. Tarvak had no idea what could cause such a thing to happen.

Burton's eyes fluttered open and he squinted against the light of Aziel's sunrod, and his eyes briefly regained their normal focus. "Cut it, if you have to."

In the golden light of the sunrod Aziel could see a fine cloud of blood drifting up from Burton's leg. She thought that with help she might be able to at least lift the stone high enough to drag the constable out. As she was examining the tragic situation, the rest of Unit 11 caught up to their scouts.

Call it around a DC 25 Strength check to free him.

Aziel briefly explained the situation as they waited for Tarvak to return. "If Monsieur Muscles and Tarvak both lift, maybe it will be enough. But we must return him to the ship. Maybe the fastest of us?" She nodded at Shane, then looked around a bit nervously. "It must have been a trap - why else is Burton so delirious? It seems much too strange to only be the pain. I only hope they do not now know that we are coming, but I think we must assume they do."

Ralf eventually floundered up and floated there looking at Burton. "You are hurt," he observed needlessly, then moved closer to get a better look at the goblin's pinned leg.

"Am not being so sure," he said to Aziel. "Is looking crushed, this leg. Very powerful, the mind. Shock, delirium, numbness, these are ways to block big pain."

"With leg trapped, healing is not so good idea, will just be crushed more. We are having way to get him free, maybe?"

While Anthony made his way to the cave-in site, Shane worked on tying some rope to the rock to allow him a way to try to aid the effort to lift it from a different position. Once in place, he waited for Anthony and Tarvek to try again, ready to pull up on the rock from an adjacent boulder.

Jaelynn, coming up behind Ralf, looked over the scene with a cold, mathematical eye.

The numbers favored leaving the goblin to his fate, or (unbeknownst to her) following his instructions, and cutting off the crushed leg.

Unfortunately, it appeared that her companions weren't going to be swayed by the math. So, she turned her eye to math of a different sort, examining the way the rocks had fallen, looking for what would have become the keystone.

KiP/BoE as Know:Engineering: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

After a few seconds, she tapped Shane on the shoulder and pointed to a single, specific rock. "That one. Pull that one out, and it should release the pressure - make it easier to free his leg."

Not entirely sure it's possible, but maybe it's at least worth a successful Aid Another? I'm going with the concept that an engineer could figure out where the primary supporting rock(s) should be, with some study. Not knowing what the DC for that would be, she could very well be pointing at the wrong rock. Anyway, Str 10 means this is probably the best she can do.

Anthony did not swim. To swim in the armor he wore would have been silly. Anthony took the potion and then simply jumped in, grateful he had spent a lot of the two days on the ship seeing to prep work so that his armor and shield would be better able to handle the water. Anthony did not swim, but he could walk, and with the potion and the weight of the armor it was actually much easier then swimming.

At the cave in sight, Anthony saw that he wasn't the only one eying the rubble looking for weak points and stronger points. He moved to stand beside Jae and pointed to another rock, "That one might come loose, so someone will have to hold it. Shane, while I pull free the other rock can you keep that one still?"

TI as Know: Eng; Aid Jae: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

Though he liked to think with numbers, Anthony was not the type to leave someone behind, especially not a fellow constable. He moved into position and waited until Shane was ready as well. After a moments thought he paused and removed his hands from the rock, then set Scrapper down beside him, who immediately stood straight and opened it's arms and legs. The robot, on his direction, moved to stand beside him and help.

It was around now that Nicodemus was feeling a little ashamed. He had brought a good assortment of gear, but he was an engineer. There were two things he should have had on him at all times and he knew it. When he got back, Anthony would be correcting this mistake immediately and requisitioning both a pulley and a crowbar to use as a makeshift lever. How could he forget the most simplistic tools was beyond him, but it went to show that he still had more to learn.

Ralf watched Anthony struggling with the boulders, then reached over his shoulder and pulled forth his hanbo. Nudging the man in the ribs with the short staff, he said, "This is maybe helping? I think there's been a little confusion. Anthony, we're looking at you to actually move the rocks. Shane and Tarvak were going to Aid Another (Shane by pulling on the rope he (hopefully) wrapped around the right rock). Tarvak rolled a straight strength check, back when he and Aziel attempted to pull Burton free, I think.

So, as far as I can tell, we're preparing to do the following: Jae and Anthony pointed out specific target rocks to remove that should (they hope) make it easier to remove Burton's leg. Anthony is about to attempt to remove the key rock by making a Str. Check, aided by Tarvak, Shane, Scrapper, and Ralf's hanbo. So we have an Aid Another STR check from Shane, need a STR check from Anthony, and Aid Another Str. Checks from Tarvak and Scrapper. (Karl, would Aziel making a check to try to pull on Burton count as an Aid Another, as well?) And, since I totally made up the Know:Engineer check thing, we don't know if that lowers the DC at all (or adds a bonus to the roll) - so we'll need Karl to rule on that. All of which will probably happen Monday, Because Karl doesn't typically game on the weekends.

But that said, I think we have a plan, folks! :-) Go, Team Unit 11!

With Jaelynn's directions, Ralf's hanbo as a lever, and the main strength of everyone else, including Scrapper, the constables were able to lever up the rock pinning Burton to the floor.

The goblin groaned in pain as he was pulled free; his leg was a mangled, crushed wreck. Blood oozed into the water in a cloud that drifted lazily around Burton. Ralf didn't think he could get the goblin battle ready even if he were to use all of his healing powers on him.

I saw somebody mention taking him back to the ship. Who's doing what?

"Battle ready" or no, Ralf has to do something.

Ralf moved forward and helped pull Burton clear of the boulders, then bent to examine his leg.

"Is bad," he said, looking up at the others. "Is very bad. More crushed than broken."

He placed his hands on the goblin and started to close his eyes, then thought better of it and dug out a wand instead.

GM, I'll have to leave this up to you, as I have no way of judging damage or how many charges to use. Ralf would burn through the entire wand if that's what it takes to save the leg. It's 80 feet to the surface, we've got a full wand of Cure Light Wounds, a healer's kit, it's dark and we're breathing water. Hit it.

As Ralf worked on providing some healing to Burton, Shane rigged a harness with some rope so he could tie the rope to his upper torso and tow Burton behind him as he swims back toward the boat along the connecting rope.

I'll label this one so you know what I'm doing.

Heal check, DC 20, to properly set compound fractures, Life Study background: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 Sorry, Burton.

Ralf did his best to set Burton's leg before beginning the healing process but as he'd said it was more crushed than broken. He couldn't find enough remaining pieces of bone to set, in that mangled mass of muscle, bone, and blood, so he settled for saving the goblin's life and hoping that a healer back on the ship or back on land could repair the damage. Ralf's wand stopped the bleeding and sealed up Burton's broken skin, though the leg was clearly not healed correctly.

Shane towed the fallen constable back to the ship while the others waited.

What's everybody else doing while Shane takes Burton back to the ship? You've got at least 5 minutes until he gets back.

-"about 1000 feet" assumes we can move thru water at our normal movement, which may be way off...
-I don't have time right now to double-check everything, but water breathing's duration gets divided up among the number affected. Depending on how it was cast, and whether or not both units were affected together, we may may not have much time left (I would assume the caster would have informed us of about how long we had).

Swimming is at 1/4 normal movement, unless you have a swim speed, which I'm pretty sure none of us do. :-)

EDIT: Minimum CL for Water Breathing is 5, and the duration is 2hrs/level. Assuming 10 hours (600 minutes), divided between 11 people (if we're counting the dog as a person) = about 54.5 minutes for each of us. Unable to do more than stabilize Burton and dull some of the goblin's pain, Ralf watched in defeat as Shane started his transport back to the ship.

"Baksheesh, small one. Stay strong," he said quietly before retrieving his hanbo and turning to look at the carnage from the cave-in.

"We should be going. Rest of Unit 6 may have trouble. Am thinking they are not leaving team member behind otherwise. Shane will be catching up, aiwa?"

He frowned as he grumbled to himself. "Amria! Should have been linking one of Unit 6 and following behind. At least could be knowing now if hurt."

Is Burton's stuff here? Some of those stabbity-stabbers could come in handy. And if we're lucky he had some bombs in that bag...

If Tarvak's been 1000 feet ahead he's been past the end of the tunnel. That's fine with me. He (or anyone else who moves through the tunnel) would have found the following:

The tunnel continued on until it emerged into a large, round space taller than it was wide. It being low tide, after emerging from the tunnel the water at the bottom of the shaft was only about 10 feet deep, and became shallower as the floor rose to the south. There was a floating wooden platform on the far side of the cave, resting now on the still-damp cave floor. Higher up around the shaft were wooden platforms anchored to the walls and walkways made chiefly of wood and rope.

The shaft was unlit, but that was no problem for Tarvak. The ceiling was far beyond the range of his ability to see in the dark, but it was hard to miss the 20 foot diameter pillar of dull gray stone rising up into the darkness. A dramatic spliter of white marble stuck out from the dull gray pillar, 5 feet wide and rising 17 feet above the waterline.

Water had long worn away the base of the marble splinter, and it looked like it had once been part of a taller pillar that had broken off some unfathomably long time ago.

There was no sign of Unit 6.

Burton had all his stuff strapped on him so he could swim, so unless somebody looted him before Shane took him back to the ship there's nothing to pick up.

Regarding Unit 6, the tunnel ceiling was collapsed for a hundred feet in front of Burton's location. If they had been bunched together with Burton in the rear, as they had been when they left the ship, the rest of Unit 6 was certainly buried under tons of stone.

Looks like that still got me to the cave ("the tunnel is approximately 200 feet long"), so I'd describe it to everyone.

Shane swam through the darkness, tracking along the rope that guided him to the ship, drawing the injured Burton behind him. He focused on clean, even strokes, to minimize the pain for his fellow constable. Gradually the rope rose to the surface and he touched the cool wood of the Impossible.

He called out softly to the marine on deck keeping an eye on the rope and soon had another rope tied to Burton. Before he gave the signal to have the goblin hauled up, he addressed Burton, hoping he was lucid. "Do you have any supplies you don't mind letting me take?"

If Burton gives a coherent answer, Shane will take whatever is indicated and secure it in his own pack, before signaling the marines to pull.

Once Burton was secured on deck, Shane said to the closest Marine, "Tell Captain Smith it appears Team 6 fell victim to a cave-in before reaching land. Team 11 will carry on with the mission."

With that Shane dove back into the sea and swam back to join the others. As he passed back over the rocks that likely were the tomb of the other constables, he said a blessing to accompany them to their next mission in the afterlife.

Everybody's in the sea cave after a 10 minute time skip.

So I think everyone can just post what they do as they arrive at the cave.

I did the 10 minutes to give all PCs time to catch up to the action. All PCs may post actions in the sea cave.

Aziel is the only one with a lit sunrod, correct? Or did she hand it off to someone who needs it more than she does?

Aziel would definitely have handed it to someone who needs the light before attempting to sneak out of the water.

Having taken Aziel's sunrod before the two Tieflings left the water to examine the cave, Jaelynn made sure she was one of the last out of the water - it made no sense to alert potential enemies more than absolutely necessary.

While she waited, she triggered her wand, wrapping herself in an invisible field of protective force.

When she broke the water's surface, she did a quick scan of the area, before settling her sight on the giant pillar.

One charge of the Mage Armor wand burned (1 hour of MA on Jaelynn). I guess Perception and then Know:Whatever on the pillar/splinter.

In the light of Aziel's sunrod, Jaelynn and Tarvak both noticed the heads of iron spikes driven into the wall every 30 feet. Once they knew to look, the iron spikes were in every direction all the way around and all the way up the shaft of the mine.

Several team members walk out across the bridge to the top of the white splinter of marble. A tiny niche was carved into the the tip of the broken pillar, and inside sat a golden coin about three inches wide. It was etched with primitive designs of birds, clouds, and dots that might have represented stars.

Ralf recognized the dots as the constellation known as the Eagle, said to hold great influence over the planet Avilona, which affected weather and air magic.

Shane emerged from the water and looked around. He did not speak initially, trusting the others who had had a chance to look around to alert him to trouble. He took a moment to let the water drip off him, checking his gear was in place. He drew his weapons and resheathed them, tipping water out of the sheaths and then stepped softly up to behind the others. "Any magic in place?" he muttered softly to Jae.

Then Shane looked for the path into the cave, assuming it must start up near the highest platform.

For perception/notice.

Is the splinter and column located in the darkened patch?

Ralf studied the coin, careful not to disturb it or even get too close to it. "Am not recognizing this medallion," he said quietly, "but if dots are stars, this," he said, pointing, "is looking like constellation 'Eagle.' Is connected to air and weather magic, if believing such things."

He quickly glanced around, and then returned his attention to the disc. "Someone is knowing how to check for magic? Am not remembering ever a coin this big, and am not seeing a hole for neck chain also; is not for wearing. But is being here for a reason. Am thinking is best not to touch until we are knowing what is reason."

He frowned. "This was mentioned in briefing and I am forgetting, maybe?"

"I don't think you forgot it," Aziel said, shaking her head as she regarded the coin. Leaving the possible removal of it to wiser heads, she returned to the ramps and climbed higher, wary of being surprised by some minion of the Duchess. Her horned shadow grew elongated and grotesque on the cave walls in the light of the sunrod.

PS as Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

I presume there's some kind of door at the top. Aziel will look for a keyhole to peek through, or at least listen at the door. She won't open it until the party is with her.
