"I fear we are too late," Warrick whispers. "The door is jammed and there is something unfriendly behind this door."

Is there any sign of struggle on this side?

"You may be right, but we need only one pigeon to still be alive. I fear we will have to risk it."

Still brimming with the power, and her sword in hand, she nods at Warrick to open the door.

Warrick nods and takes a step back before throwing his weight against the door, trying to un-jam it.

What would this be? Strength check? 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

natalya, yes, you see what he sees.
the stables
Leaping suddenly, the creature lands beside a tied horse and opens it's mouth wide. A black dart streaks out, piercing the flesh of the horse. The horse neighs in pain, rearing so hard that it breaks free of its ropes, along with breaking the wooden beam that held the iron ring.

Female Human (Jaramide) Wilder 2 / Initiate 3 / Aes Sedai 1

"Not good, we need to secure the horses and hold here long enough for Niketsu and Warrick." she looks to MEridian and Tandem, "I hope we are in time, do you see Davor?"

Hearing the horse scream, Meridian says with certainty ringing in his voice,Come! We need to secure the horses first!

Pausing just a moment to ensure that Natalya and Tandem will follow, Meridian leads the way to the stables at a run.

upstairs
Throwing his weight onto the jammed door, the door shudders and opens slightly, a slick wet sound of something being dragged coming from the other side of the door.
Looking through the opening, Warrick is able to see a section of the rooftop. The top of the roof has torches and fire braziers illuminating the top level, throwing all objects upon the tier in sharp relief.
A dark shape, white with blue blotches across its back crouches, hunched over a soldier, and appears to be feeding.

the stables

you do not see davor

Running fast through the chaotic courtyard, you skid to a stop at the entrance to the stables. Your eyes cast about, and take in a grisely scene.
One of those mutants stands next to a horse, what appears to be its tongue embedded within the flesh of the horse, the horses flesh rippling and writhing in an unnatural fashion. The creature, upon spotting you, opens its maw wide and with a violent hiss, spats shards at you.

Davor waits for the creature to approach him then he will charge and sneak attack it.

Stepping back slightly, Warrick softly apprises Niketsu of the situation. "Shadowspawn on the rooftop - right about there. Guards are dead." Warrick puts his weight into the door once more, trying to force it open far enough for either him to squeeze through, or for Niketsu to weave against the creature.

Niketsu reaches out to the creature with the power, threads normally associated with healing, seeking, exploring the creature. With the power, she looked for that element that made the creature live; its breath, its beating heart, and then, instead of bridging gaps and healing as the weaves would typically be used, she used them to counteract the thing's natural impulse to live, and slammed the power into place in order to shut the whole system down.

Using the healing weave 'Rend' using a 3rd level slot to cast as a 4th level weave. Concentration vs. DC 20: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25 Damage: 4d8 + 6 ⇒ (2, 7, 4, 6) + 6 = 25, Fort save vs. DC 19 for half.

Warrick slips through the door, placing himself between his Aes Sedai and the foul creature as he takes up position, ready to strike if the thing comes within reach.

Stepping out the door (assuming he can), moving the equivalent of 10 ft, keeping line of sight open for Niketsu to strike again if needed, and readying an action to attack if the thing comes within reach. btw, how far away is it from the door?

at the stables
Meridian and Natalya
Barbs splatter into your flesh, some bouncing harmlessly off of armor, others finding the unprotected soft spot. Those barbs that enter the flesh quickly burrow in, causing the skin around it to discolor and ripple. While not painful, it is disheartening seeing your own flesh move. A moment after it started, the rippling stops. Where once skin layed across flesh, now overlapping scales, similar to a snake.

what almost sounds like a chuckle, the creature begins to advance upon meridian, natalya, and tandem. Walking past some barrels, the creature fails to notice Davor laying in wait.

no, tandem made the fort save.

tandem:
You have heard stories of a trolloc's that went beyond the normal shape. these are incredibly rare, and are often told as swordsmen's stories, meant to "scare" the new recruits. But for every story that is told, there is the smallest kernal of truth

Male Borderlander Woodsman 2/Wilder 4

Tandem lets out a deep grunt of surprise as the barbs dig into his skin, but is otherwise unperturbed by the grotesque creature's attack. He is a bit surprised to see Davor's attack, but once he regains his wits he moves in to flank the shadowspawn and attacks with a two-handed blow from his scimitar.

Not wanting to give the creature a clear path to Niketsu, Warrick draws bow, fits arrow to string, and lets fly.

the roof
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19

With an arrow sticking out of its body, the creature attempts to move towards Warrick, only to have its body suddenly be cut open, as if a thousand knives slashed at it. Green putrid blood oozes from the cuts, and as the creature falls onto its face, the blood begins to pool, and an odd hissing begins to emit from the stone as it is broken down.
Cracks splinter off from the creature as the stone looses its structural integrity, and a 15 foot section collapses to the floor below, leaving a large hole.
The bird box still stands upright, yet the stone upon which it stands looks close to crumbling.

stables
sheesh, i need to give these things more hit points, they dont seem to last past the first round...

Before the creature can do anything else, meridian, tandem and Natalya both strike at it. As it falls to the ground, a sickly orangeish red blood flows from its wounds. As you stand up to relax, the blood suddenly erupts into flames, casting flames out in a wide arc, setting the stables and those near by on fire.

not that big, yet.

Warrick drops his bow and reaches to secure the bird coup before the stone supporting it gives way.

Male Borderlander Woodsman 2/Wilder 4

Tandem cleanly jumps back from the eruption and drops his sword. For a moment he is tempted to draw upon the source to quench the flames, but he manages to resist, and instead smothers the flames coating his sword with his cloak. Once that is complete he moves to aid Meridian in rescuing the horses.

do you want any kind of checks to rescue horses?

the roof
You spot 4 pigeons in the cage. 2 have blood but are alive, 2 look to be unharmed. Stepping nimbly to grab at the cage, you feel the flooring sag a little at your weight. As if to accent the danger, a loud low snap is heard from below, causing the floor to tremble.

Niketsu looks at the birdcage, but a flash of movement from beyond the walls draws her attention. A strange sight in the night, something glowing. At first, she thinks its some strange rock, or a trick of the lights from the fortress reflecting off a pool, but a moment later it moves, a slight shift. Then another. It takes her a second to realize that she sees something massive, walking, towards the gates.
Four smaller lights walk along side it, a strange blur to these lights, distorted, hard to focus on. These creatures dart about the massive thing, lights turning from blurs to circles and other shapes.
Father back, a lone light, like the letter V created by pure sunlight blazes forth. The figure below the light is shadowed, but the area around is bathed in the harsh light, distinctly showing off the size of this creature.

give me a handle animal check

for everyone

As you go about your tasks, a strange feeling overcomes your senses, as if something odd is happening. Glancing about, your eyes fall upon the mutants. The creatures stand tall, looking up,unmoving. Some of the guardsmen take advantage of this lucky break to strike back, slaughtering some that are within reach, before joining with others to form a resistance.
As one, the remaining creatures that are not being down, turn towards the gates, and rush it. Those nearest it jump up and climb to the top of the gates, whilest others rush towards the base. Upon reaching the gate, they begin to claw and lash at the wooden gates. Chunks of wood splinter off. Iron is pulled upon, warping from the savage tearing.
A slight rumble is felt through the ground. All animals twitter from it, horses neigh, dogs bark, cats meow, birds flap and sing.

warrick:
Legend has it that the Shadow, during its wanning days during the war of power, along with the creation of shadowspawn, mutant creatures that could mutate a man's body, and give him over to the shadow was created. Some of these mutants exceeded expectations, growing past the man size into something greater, something more terrifying

"Grab the pigeons that live; we need to move!"

Following her own advice, Niketsu sheaths her sword and reaches into the cage to grab one of the living pigeons, one of those without the marks of blood. She then quickly wheels about and moves back down the way she came.

I'll be travelling tomorrow and Sunday, and I'm away with my wife for a few days from Dec 28-31 (Kids with the grandparents, yay). Those days I'll be spotty or absent, but I should be able to check in through the holidays otherwise.

Warrick gathers up the three remaining pigeons, keeping the unbloodied one separate from the others. He hurries after Niketsu.

I will be traveling as well, and will be out of town until next year. I should still be able to post, but it might be sporadic depending on what's going on. Merry Christmas and happy holidays all!

the below applies to all except davor, who made his handle animal check

Kicking and thrashing, the horses, upset from the strange creature exploding next to them along with the fire, rear back and break free of your grip. Turning wildly, the horses bolt for the doors.

those that failed the handle animal check, make a reflex save, dc 20 to grab at the horses. Success you can make another handle animal check. Fail, and the horse bolts out the stable.

what's the plan for those pigeons?
