Angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress

Revery took cold damage? I don't remember that happening.

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

"Subdual damage for all: 1d6 ⇒ 1"

I only understood half of that, but yeah. I don't really see Gwendalyn's small mana pool (at max Wis!) as a bad thing. Not a good thing either, just a thing. (Raising her Wis is my priority, but more for the mana recovery and DC bump.) We won't be able to take on such big challenges as we could if she had more mana points, but we also won't have to wait as long to recover for the next one.

That's what makes Cannibalize cut both ways: it might save our bacon now and then (once I get it at level 6), but if I use it too much, then I'll have to play it safe for 12 hours straight. Definitely a last resort.

By the by, did you ever decide what to do about the XP loss from death?

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

I'm playing a little fast and loose with the setting. At least in the online game, it would be nigh-impossible for a couple of level 1s to make it from Halas to Freeport, IIRC. But I like this version better than her being abducted in the northlands.

That's cold damage for those that failed their save.

<nuteth kicketh>

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

"Subdual damage for all who failed their saves" contains an extra four words that would have made it clearer, as well as being technically correct.

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Oh, and speaking of playing with the setting, I hope you don't mind my fleshing out Halas while I flesh out Gwendalyn. This is what I've said so far:

* Halas has municipal baths that are segregated by sex. This isn't so much for modesty as so that they can talk about the opposite sex, and relax without being hit on, and not have to watch couples cuddle (or pet, or screw).

* Halasites don't have baths at home, but they do have saunas, where the family sweats together in the nude. (I modeled this after old Finnish culture; according to some superficial research that I did for a class on public speaking, the home sauna was where they'd be born into the world, cleansed during life, and prepared for burial.) They've been known to cool down afterward by rolling in the snow.

* The drinking age in Halas is when you can handle it without crying or starting a fight when a drunk jostles you out of the way or says something mean. That's how a 17 year-old already has an alcohol tolerance better than anyone else on the raft.

Just for my own use, here are some other declarations that I need to add to her background.

Spoiler:
* Her older brother Tudan is over-protective, and Gwendalyn used to prank him sometimes by pretending to be pulled underwater when they were swimming in Halas Lake.

* The family business is fishing, but she never learned it more than just for fun.

* Her usual response to being pissed off is to go have a few drinks.

* The last thing she remembers before the slave ship is splitting up with Tudan in Freeport to do some individual crafting, and then going drinking instead, because she was mad at him for not respecting her toughness.

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

As healer, I may get assertive over your hit points, because I really need to know them accurately. Please don't take it the wrong way.

@Quinaweniel: You only have 2 subdual points. Xenh rolled a 1 for the second time in a row, thank the Tribunal! 2 is your total, not how much to add. Also, you'll fall unconscious when your subdual points are greater than your current hit points -- so it would be good for you to increase your hit points.

@Everyone: I only have 2 mana left. I need to wait and see what happens with the next set of Fort saves. Quinaweniel is the closest to unconsciousness, but everyone else is within 6 or less (potentially just one roll). The only reason why I can afford to wait is because of my cold resistance; at worst, I might get 3 subdual points (vs. 5 hit points). But if I get 2 or 3, then I'll need to heal myself first, since I can't help anyone else if I'm unconscious.

Female Koada' Dal (High elf) Magician 1

Well i misread the damage rolled by Xenh, better so.Feel free to check Quinaw's sheet whenever you like.

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

I was editing my post when you wrote that, so now we've confused everyone. :)

I was trying to subtly suggest that you consider casting Minor Shielding on yourself. That's all. :)

Female Koada' Dal (High elf) Magician 1

I edited my last post and removed that question, so everyone is even more confused now ^_^

I only understood half of that

KEI (Koadic's Endless Intellect) was the endgame level 60 enchanter spell that every lower level character that could cast spells was running to pay for, since it effectively made them be able to cast nonstop for hours. The developers (devs) changed the game and gave it a level cap, so you'd need to be level 46 for it to land on you. Imagine being level 1 and getting a spell cast on you that did this for 2.5 hours:

1: Increase Mana Pool by 250
2: Increase Mana by 14 per tick
3: Increase INT by 25
4: Increase WIS by 25

The fungi tunic (Fungus Covered Scale Tunic) was a chest item that gave the wearer a 15 point regeneration per tic, which made them effectively immortal at low levels. If you started getting your arse handed to you all you would do is run a bit, regen and then engage once again. No one could camp Guk at lower levels, so it was an item only a "twink" (character with gear way beyond their abilities to get themselves) could wear.

Works for me as long as it doesn't run contrary to the very basic description in the main book, I'm on board.

Gwendalyn wrote:

I am currently considering just giving Gwendalyn 7 training points, then hitting her with the experience negative and accepting the resurrection experience loss, which forces me to award individual experience.

Another option is to take away the 7 training points I gave up, but people tend to get possessive if you try to take away their teddy bears once you give them.

Another other thought would be to punish the one resurrected in a non-experience way (-1 to CON maybe), which means I could give group experience again and just leave the bonus training points where they are.

Another other other thought would be to give group experience, but permit the group to vote on who gets a roleplaying award at the end of the week/month and give that person a bonus.

Still up in the air...and it might remain that way until we get closer to me murdering my first PC.

If anyone has an easy solution I'm all auditory flaps.

My first character, an iksar monk, made it from Field of Bones to East Commonlands, and turned in enough orc stuff to bank in Freeport.

Speaking of how difficult it was to get there at level 1 at that time, I think I died 91x en route.

Good times.

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Well, yes. In EQ, "would be nigh-impossible" is another way of saying "would take lots and lots of time". ;)

@Maruusk: As your healer, I order you to be conscious with only 2 subdual points. I have no idea how you arrived at 5. Please don't make my job harder. :p

Edit: I'm definitely against the Con penalty. EQ Rez you can just work it off with some time. With how many training points it takes to raise an ability score, that's just not the same at all.

If I got a vote, it would be to take back the banana and go with individual XP. The more I read, the more integral to the game it looks.

Female Koada' Dal (High elf) Magician 1

Correction:Quinaweniel's status is -Fatigued; HP 4/4, Subdual dam 2/4
Does she needs channeling check to cast Minor Shielding on herself? She would need to cast it once every 10 minutes but it'll raise her HP.

edit:spellcasting status; Channelling +4(defensively+8); Meditation +7(recovers 7 mana/hour); Mana pool 8/8

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Yes, according to the DM, casting a spell takes Channeling DC 16. (Actually he said 15 + spell level, but all we know are 1st-level spells. And he also said that Minor Healing can be cast without a check due to being a free action.) But you can attempt the casting over and over until you succeed, since failure of that type doesn't expend mana, so it's really not much of a restriction at the moment -- especially not for a spell with instant recast.

@All: I've enjoyed being able to post a lot this three-day weekend, but just so you all know, I'll mostly be limited to late evenings GMT-8 until Friday. You know, working for money. ;)

On the rules' lawyer conversation, from the days of yore, I am known to make them cry. I work hard to be consistent, but I never let the rules stand in the way of a good story. An example is the nat 20 fort save that just healed a point of subdual damage. If that caused a twitch in your eye, please be prepared for more and more of the same :) Worry not, I also beat the snot out of critical failures!

All votes count, or at least have the illusion of counting.

If no one would have an issue with taking back the 7 points, I'll consider that. Let me know and I'll take silence to mean, "Do whatever you want, I won't grouse later."

The CON penalty would be temporary BTW, like the rez sickness that comes into effect in EverQuest. I'm not sure how much I like this though, since it's just more accounting. I want an easier system.

Quinaweniel wrote:

Yup, channeling checks are needed due to the distractions of sailing about on the good ship dysfunction.

I vote for keeping things the same as they are now.

How often do you reckon we will be resurrected? It is a 12th level cleric spell. Is there another spell, lower level and usable by Shawomen?

Lazarus autosaves your text as you type in forms, so if you lose it....BAM, back from the dead.

Well apparently, I've just installed it 8 minutes ago.

Revery wrote:

Vote tallied.

<those with high spot skills notice that the vote switches to Obama>

Reanimation is a 4th level cleric spell and there's a tonne of other resurrection spells in the game.

Rezzes are common in EverQuest, because this universe is all about murdering you in so many different ways. I won't say common, but certainly not rare. You won't match a Paranoia death rate, but you might get close on a raid.

There's no rezzers in the party, so you'll have to pay for one to be cast on you, though that's not that scary since you don't have to pay for a crazy high reagent cost.

Still pondering and tallying other inputs....

Angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress

Just noticed I did 1D5 for subdual damage this time around. Too late to change it on the fly, but my successive rolls will be individual for damage to make it a tad more dramatic/realistic.

The fates have conspired to make life easy for you damage-wise. I aim to misbehave :). If death comes for you then blame the die roller.

Fair warning the next rolls will be potentially brutal, this is the time to use your light sabre to split open Luke's mount and shove him into the warm innards.

p.s. Those that played with me bfore warned you to run!

I love the line attributed to Edmund Burke (Irish philosopher) "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

That is what pushes my game, since there is bucketfuls of evil in the real world that no one does anything about. It is nice to follow fantasy where someone stands up to such things.

Tis why I seek out heroes :)

Then this should be your song:

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where's the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and turn and dream of what I need

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure
And it's gotta soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
It's gonna take a superman to sweep me off feet

(chorus)

Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I would swear that there's someone somewhere
Watching me

Through the wind and the chill and the rain
And the storm and the flood
I can feel his approach
Like the fire in my blood

(chorus)

Holding out for a hero by Jim Steinman,Dean Pitchford,Bonnie Tyler

No swim check required if you cling to the raft. Apparently a climb check to get back on board, and no check that I know of to move to a different side of it hand-over-hand.

- DC 15 Swim check to swim in the waves.

- No check required to move about in the water clinging to the side of the raft.

I am under the impression that it is just trying to make it dramatic, and dramatic it is, cause the shark is charging after next round and cutting someone in half :)

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

The shark knows how yucky Erudite tastes, of course? Roll a knowledge check for sharky...

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Gwen is the heaviest member of the group. She even comes close to balancing out Revery and Quin combined.

As long as we're talking statistics, Gwendalyn is also the youngest and tallest member of the group. She's tied with Maruusk for strongest, and with Quinaweniel for wisest -- even though Quin is the oldest (as well as the shortest, lightest, and most charming).

Maruusk is the most agile, Revery is the smartest, and Sajeek is the toughest. Sajeek is also the only other one besides Gwen who is proficient with a physical attack that doesn't use a weapon.

In terms of alignments, we have two discordant good, a neutral good, an orderly neutral, and an orderly good.

No one knows the trained-only skills Disable Device, Knowledge (street smarts), Knowledge (warcraft), Pick Lock, Pick Pocket, Read Lips, and (of course) Undead Empathy.

Maruusk could add Sneak to his skills, since Vah Shir begin with 4 bonus ranks in it. Same with Language (Thieves' Cant) from Rogue. He also still doesn't have 5 subdual points (but now it's 4).

Okay, now back to deciding what to do.

I assume that my Strengthen and Quina's Minor Shielding have expired? Since you're going by 10 minute increments for the Fort saves.

Just to be clear, the Heal check was intended merely as a knowledge check. I really have no idea how far it is (in game terms) from unconsciousness to death or whatever from the cold, and I was hoping that Gwen could give me a hint.

Gwendalyn is very frustrated with not having regained a single mana point yet, but I understand that it's because as soon as the seas calmed enough for her to meditate properly, she went for a swim instead. It's one of many factors in her decision of what to do next...

Nope, both the strengthen and minor shielding are still in effect.

10 minute increments were based on sitting on the decking. Your dip in the ocean was much colder, which moved things up significantly.

Heal check was so low, not that Gwen would know that, that nothing is gleaned.

Good call healing Revery BTW.

Subdual cold damage because regular killing damage on the unconscious and he was en route to rolling up a new character.

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Ah. I didn't know that. But Gwendalyn didn't like how his breathing was becoming shallow, and I was hopeful that getting a shelter up would buy some time. With so little mana and so little info, it was a hard decision -- at the time, she was looking at the possibility of falling unconscious herself and not being able to help anyone -- so I'm glad it was a good one. :)
