The Tomb of Horrors Part 1 (4e) - Group 1

The monster that is Tomb of Horrors.
Two groups are going through this.
For some reason I set up a second game thread for Group 2, but not for Group 1.

"I don't like the look of that mist. It feels too… orthogonal."

What's the plan?

From D13, Norrin gauges the height of the ceiling above the water and tosses piton at G16 in an attempt to gauge the depth of the water (at least the bit next to the shore).


Calling on his piton army again, Norrin swiftly establishes that the water is shallow near the shoreline. A mere three feet deep, it will slow the group, but not hinder them unduly.

Difficult terrain.

Lisbarr comes up to the runic room. "What is this do you say Rothel?"

Can Lisbarr aid Rothel?

If so... Aid roll 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11... or not...

Lisbarr moved to E13, next to Rothel


Theoretically he can, but there's little point as Rothel rolled extremely high anyway.

"Have you still got that flying hook thing? Can we swing across? I don't like getting my feet wet."


To answer the rest of Norrin's question, the grotto has a 30 foot high ceiling (6 squares up).

Norrin detaches the flying hook from his belt and hands it to Lisbarr.

"Thankyou! Is everyone else going to come along too?"


Just a quick reminder of how the Flying Hook works:

Effect: You command the hook to fly from you to an unattended object within 20 squares of you that you can see, and it magically latches onto the object. Once secured, the hook extends a thin rope back to your hands. Climbing the rope requires an Athletics check, or you can pull the object toward you with a Strength check. The hook and rope can support up to 3,000 pounds before the hook detaches from the surface. The rope cannot be tied or knotted in any way, nor can it be used to attack or affect a creature.
As a minor action, you can command the hook to detach from the object and return to you. This causes the rope to retract.

Lisbarr considers his athletic prowess. (Do we still need a check if we are just swinging on it?)

"Just supposing I were to fall off half way across...? Do you think it is still shallow there? It may be safer just to wade across..."

He walks into the room (to E15)


Lisbarr slings the Flying Hook vaguely in the direction of the far wall where it latches onto an outcropping.

Moving into the centre of the little rune-filled room, he prepares to monkey climb across the pool.

DC15 Athletics please.

Norrin moves across the runes, prepared for any ill effects.

After Lisbarr goes, he'll monkey climb as well to the far island. If the rope passes through the mist, the half-orc will drop into the water before climbing into it and swim around to beach at S15.

Athletics 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15


Norrin shimmies successfully over the water and is followed in short order by Akemi. Neither of the pair can see anything through the mist.

Rothel joins the others on on the edge of the mist. Lyan waits until Lisbarr has made the attempt (if he's going to), ready to help out if the half-elf proves less than deft.

I love that the two with the lowest bonus, almost by half, scored the highest. You don't see that happen that much. Lisbarr and Rothel must have REALLY been afraid of touching that water.


Lisbarr and Rothel display unexpected athletic prowess as they scramble over to the island. Lyan waits for them to land safely and casually monkey climbs after them.

Wedged on the only corner unadorned with mist, the group can see no better than they could on the far shore. As before, the sense of arcane power is palpable.

Lisbarr feels certain he saw some slight movement in the depths of the mist.

"I'm sure I saw aomething move in the mist. Can anyone else see anything?"

Lisbarr reclaims hook and hands it back to Norrin.

He struggles to see more of the movement.

Active perception: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (16) + 22 = 38 Does Lisbarr see any more?


Lisbarr's acutely honed paranoia allows him to spot a dim figure in the mist. He can't tell for sure, but the bodyshape might belong to an eladrin woman. Her body language suggests that she will not welcome visitors.

Norrin struggles to discern figure from swirling mist.

Nevertheless he waves a friendly greeting, "Hello! We don't mean to intrude, but I like what you've done to the place, the mist matches the… uh, stone very well!" compliments the half-orc.

Diplomacy 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26


"Leave. Leave now."

The voice from the mist is clearly female.

Norrin leans forward to study the mist up close.

Arcana 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

"We are at an impasse, both figuratively and literally."

He bows at the figure, "I'm deeply sorry, but my friends and I must get to the Hall of Pillars to put down Mogahdam for good."

"The Tel-quessir are on my Don't Shoot-and-ask-questions-later list, but just like in the parable of the Nerathi flagship and the lighthouse, one of us must give way."

Lisbarr supports Norrin's attempt with a word.

"Yes."

Then he tries to ascertain from what he can see and hear why it is the lady wants them gone.

Insight: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (17) + 21 = 38

"Is there a problem?"


Didn't know the lighthouse story :D

Norrin's closer inspection of the mist suggests strongly that he should not enter it. It seems to tug at his mind, tempting him to turn against his friends.

Judging from the subtle shifts in vocal tone, Lisbarr is confident that the speaker is not in full control of her actions.

"I am Mindressa and it is my duty to disembowel you."

Although the voice is closer, the speaker can still only be seen as a dim shadow moving towards the party. She has concealment.

Rothel puts the pieces together at last. The runes in the small chamber control the devilish mist. Disabling them is likely to dispel it.

Rothel looks about the room, slightly confused, "I see no alternate egress from the confines of this chamber. Perhaps this woman be be able to clarify for our benefit which method we may use to leave, other than the one from which we entered? Also, I am unclear as to the intentions of her statement, is she requesting that we leave for our benefit, or demanding we leave as a threat? As she has not yet acted against us, I am inclined to presume that the aura of light in which she inhabits acts as a confinement of sorts. Perhaps she would be willing to help us if we were to discern how to free her from these ethereal bonds." He directs toward the group, as he has learned long ago that most do not respond well to his manner of speaking to them.


Akemi listens politely as ever and then gestures slightly towards the golden mist.

"I do not think this lady has good intentions towards us," she notes. "If she is entralled, her actions will not be of her own choosing, but this does not make her less dangerous."

"Right. Turn off the mist and don't kill Mindressa, unless you have to."

Norrin opens play with the first salvo.

1d6 + 17 + 3 + 3d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 17 + 3 + (4, 4, 8) + 3 = 44 radiant damage.

Minor Action: With his other hand he shoots the flying hook at the north wall (D15).

Move Action to monkey climb back towards the runes.
Athletics 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22.


Norrin fires a futile arrow into the mist and scrambles for the rope once more. He discovers this is more difficult than he first thought. The area around Mindressa is turbulent to say the least. It seems the lady has an affinity with water.

Teleporting out of the mist like a golden fury, Mindressa sends a crashing tide of water over the nearest group of companions, attempting to buffet them into the ensnaring mist.

Crashing Tide (Fort or Ref (whichever is lower)). On hit target is pushed 5 squares, knocked prone and dazed (se). Miss, push 2, knocked prone.
Close blast 5.
Targets Lyan, Akemi, Lisbarr, Rothel
1d20+21=41 v Lyan. Crit. 32 damage, prone and dazed
1d20+21=35 v Akemi. Hits. Prone and dazed.

As the mist closes over the hapless quartet, it seeps into their minds, searching for ways to control and corrupt.

Lyan's unrivalled resilience stands him in good stead as he brushes off the worst of the attack and rises to his feet. Even for him, the going is difficult, as he finds himself buffeted by the eladrin woman's aura.

Lyan flexes his flail, but it passes harmlessly short of Mindressa.


Momentarily disconcerted by the attack, Lyan makes sure Mindressa pays him attention before mistiming his attack.

Rothel, flabbergasted and reeling from the wave, tries to focus on just removing himself from the mist. No good can come from being in it. "Vacate the area of the mists. It is trying to get into our minds."

Rothel and Akemi crawl clear, but can't shake the shock of Mindressa's attack.

It isn't charm, fear or psychic, so that is a fail, Rothel.
Akemi crawls fast so to get out.

There is no sign of any exit on Rothel's side of the mist.

Lisbarr stands up, looks about him and, in a dreamy, delerious manner walks out of the mist.

Stand; action point: move to N22 and braces himself against the cave wall.

"Somehow we need to get Rothel back to the runes. Is ther any way to get the hook to him? Or wait until you see him and throw it."

Save vs dazed. 1d20 ⇒ 6

"(Ooh, my head)".


Clutching his head, Lisbarr manages to find his way out of the mist.

Rothel closes his eyes to stop the swimming vision, "Do not trouble yourself with the extending line, I will arrive at the runes as quickly as I may rope or not. I should have examined them closer from the onset, alas I failed to do so and am paying for my foolish decision."

Mechanically, climbing or standing and walking will be no different in time, and climbing may actually take longer due to the half movement. Regardless, in either method I will need to pass through the mist.

I forgot about the extra movement needed to climb per square. So I need 2 × 3 squares worth of movement to get to N15, and then 3 × 2 squares of movement to continue climbing to K15.

Also, is it possible to get concealment by being underwater?


@Norrin - yes, you can gain concealment if you're underwater.

Norrin fires swiftly and effectively before moving back down the rope towards the runes.

The maiden's eyes narrow as she ignores Lyan in favour of the half-orc. Scooping up water in her palm, she hurls it towards the rogue, seeking to immobilise him.

Recharges:
Fey Stride - 1d6=6. Yes.
Crashing Tide - 1d6=6. Yes.

Piercing Stream (Ref). On hit target is immobilised to end Mindressa's next turn

As she moves past the mist, Lisbarr notices a key hanging around her perfect neck.

Lyan blithely disregards the slowing effects of Mindressa's aura or, indeed, of potentially sinking, as he snakes out on the water to hit Mindressa before returning to land.

Feather Step (move, at-will): Move 3 and TEOT ignore difficult terrain and move on liquid.
Rebouding Dance aug2: Shift 11 and attack (vs AC) during the move Loop and end at R16.
