The Tomb of Horrors Part 1 (4e) - Group 1

The monster that is Tomb of Horrors.
Two groups are going through this.
For some reason I set up a second game thread for Group 2, but not for Group 1.

Norrin does less than he hoped, merely dazing his foe rather than rendering it unconcscious, and moves to make sure that M6 doesn't flatten Rothel before the deva can calm it.

All the mummies heal themselves of some of the damage they've taken and gather themselves to attack again. For the most part. M4 remains prone, like a particularly decrepit drunkard and unable to do anything at all.

The rest, being dazed, can do little but thump the nearest foe.

Lyan delivers a reproving blow before teleporting back into the healing zone provided by Rothel.

Lisbarr tries to help as many people as possible.

Rothel leans down over the side of the table to continue his efforts on keeping the enwrapped creature from being fully risen. As he works, he encourages the cleansing cloud of wash over towards the majority of the group.

Oddly enough, no. How strange.

Pausing only to wrap himself and such allies as he can reach in his protective aura, Rothel concentrates on uttering the arcane syllables which will put the mummy to rest. This time he feels no hesitation and the words come surely.

Ready hold down the twitching patient, Norrin instinctively offers the mummy a swig from his metal flask, before realising his error and imbibing the liquor himself.

Norrin's forceful fingers hold town M6 as it flinches away from the arcane phrases guiding it to rest.

M2 and M5 converge on Lyan, while M6 lashes out once more at his would-be rescuers, catching Rothel on the chin.

Lisbarr tries once more to disadvantage the mummies nearest to him, creating a zone of his own, and then moves into the protection of the disinfected zone.

Effect Creates a zone of brilliant light which last until the end if Lisbarr's next turn (unless he persists it). All enemies in the zone take a -2 penalty to attack rolls, defences and saving throws.

He starts to take note of what Rothel is doing.


Lisbarr irradiates the three nearest mummies, preventing them from regenerating - and steps back into the safety of Rothel's divine disinfectant.

Akemi retains her poise and her aim as she slices expertly into M2 again. More bandages fall away revealing only dessicated flesh beneath.

Seconds later, Lyan adds his own contribution before shifting out of the mess of mummies.

Rothel works to complete the last rites on the mummy that Norrin holds for him. Completing the incantations necessary to put the thing to its final rest. Seeing the mess Lyan is in, Rothel tosses him the curative admixture he had made, allowing its magic to mend Lyan's wounds. He decides to move over toward the fight, to stand on the opposite side of the mummy to Lyan's north, shaking off the debilitating effects of the mummy's earlier strikes.

Rothel chants the last necessary words and watches with satisfaction as M6's spirit floats free once more. Then he moves purposefully to join the ongoing fight, restoring Lyan on the way.

Norrin's arrow again prevents M5 from healing itself.

The mummies may not be the smartest of combatants, but they sense well enough that Lisbarr's zone is bad for their health. M2 and M5 shift out of it and give their considerable attention to Akemi and Lyan respectively. M4 rises and slams itself into Rothel. M5 lassoos Lyan and pulls the hobgoblin adjacent before unleashing a potent blow. So great is the impact, that the hobgoblin cannot avoid inhaling a lungful of lethal spores.

Winding Wrap (Ref) - range 8. On hit target is pulled adjacent and immobilised to end Mummy's next turn.

BTW, Lisbarr is at F11, and the orange zone is -2 to attack rolls, all defenses and saving throws. I don't know if that changes anything. And Lisbarr is no longer at -2 to hit M4. Apart from that everything is fine.

With an apologetic look towards Rothel for not helping with the arcana checks, Lisbarr adjusts his zone so that it takses in more mummies and tries to stop them regenerating once more.

Move the zone to centre on I10;

On hit, mummy takes 7 radiant damage and is slowed until the end of Lisbarr's next turn.

Is there anything Lisbarr can do to help Lyan? Will a heal check work? or do we have to wait to the end of the encounter? Lisbarr has the cure disease ritual.


@Lisbarr - OK, got all that. M4 is still taking the ongoing radiant.

Re Lyan, there isn't much you can do mid-battle. Cure Disease will work just fine, otherwise he will need to make an Endurance check (DC27) at the end of his next extended rest to see if the condition worsens, improves or stays the same. Alternatively, someone else can do a heal check (DC27) in lieu of that for the same results. As things stand, he'll be galloping through healing surges as they and any other healing he gets deliver only half the normal hp.

Lisbarr thoughtfully engulfs M4 and M2 in a light that weakens them badly and adds injury to insult as a small cloud of light arcs into M4.

Akemi murmurs a short prayer and sluices more radiant light over enemy and ally alike.

Mantle of Glory (Will). Close Blast 5. Lyan and Rothel can both spend a healing surge.

Rothel moves back to stand beside Lisbarr, as his spirit floats closer to Akemi. The spirit strikes out weakly at the mummy nearest Akemi, but Rothel tries to impart to him the experience of dealing with them before in past lives.

Move, Rothel shift to F10, as Spirit shifts to I11.
Standard, Ironbreaker claws against M2 1d20 + 18 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 18 - 2 = 20, Memory of 1,000 lifetimes 1d10 ⇒ 8. So 28 vs Ref.
If it hits damage 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 and Akemi can make a melee basic as a free with a +5 to hit.


Thanks to Lisbarr's zone, Rahz-Ahk manages to claw at M2, but Akemi cannot follow up.

Recognizing the state of affairs that Lyan is in, Rothel knows his healing won't work, and being out of healing doesn't help. His next best step is enhance him instead of heal him. To this end, he encourages Rahz-Ahk to finish off the one near him, to go aid Lyan.

The spirit claws viciously at M2, finally felling the undead and releasing it from its long bondage. Lyan feels the healing wash over him aware that it can do little, but savouring the benefit nonetheless.

Lyan may have 1 hp. Did he begin his last turn in the zone? If so he got regen 5 (or 2 if regen gets halved), resist 3 from rain of renewal, and he had 11 temps from my last action (temps aren't healing so not halved). If he wasn't in the zone, though, then I think he's at -1.


He was in the zone. Regen is also halved due to Mummy Rot (which is vile). OK. He's just about alive and I'll amend the above post accordingly.


I'm back - and so is Lisbarr, whose turn it is.

If I understand correctly, I had 1hp? Plus 18 (after halving) for the heal, plus 5 regen, so at 24/96. As best I can tell, I have 9 surges and 1 power point remaining before this turn.

Parting Shot Aug1 vs M4, M5 AC, shifting to I10 as part of attack.
1d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 18 + 2 = 331d20 + 18 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 18 - 2 = 281d10 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Looks like 21 to M4, probably missed M5 again. Out of power points, so speed drops to 6.

Lyan, bolstered by his allies, strikes out at both mummies once more, even as his internal resources dwindle.


The bandages around M4 break apart as Lyan's frantic attack hits, leaving the mummy much closer to proper death. M5, as so often before, manages to duck.

Rothel focuses on getting his conjured rain to cover the area around the enemies once more, as Rahz-Ahk moves to try and take out the heavily wounded undead. Alas, the spirits swings are weak, but it doesn't prevent his essence from bolstering the already wavering health of the group's staunch defender.

Lisbarr's worries about his performance seem to be affecting Akemi as well. She marks M4 as her Oath target, but even with Rothel's help, she misses.
