Somewhat rattled by an enemy with no appreciation of poetry or personal insults, Darwyn backs off and fires an arrow randomly at the insects. It pings harmlessly off the vat.

Spectral insects meet the scarabs head on and devour many of them. Greatly diminished, the swarm yet lives, but the end cannot be far now.

Norrin moves to F14 and launches two arrows to drive the remainder of the swarm away from his friends.
Twin Strike @S1 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (19) + 17 = 36 vs AC; 1d10 + 5 + 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 5 + (6) + 4 = 21 damage and S1 is pushed one square.
1d20 + 17 ⇒ (13) + 17 = 30 vs AC; 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 damage.
66/90 HP

Norrin's arrows skewer the remaining scarabs and they drop writhing to the ground.
OUT OF COMBAT
And here, I must make an admission. I seem to have failed to give you any XP since the tapestry room. With that in mind (and I hope accepting my apologies), please do the following:
You are all now on 42,833XP. You are all also Level 13 and need to upgrade accordingly. Everything comes into immediate effect.
Once you're over the shock of your elevation, let me know what you're doing.
Rev DM |
Surely.
The group step through the portal and find themselves in a ruined laboratory. Fungus hangs in sheets from the walls (the red things) and another type of oily black fungus spreads over the floor, eating into the remains of equipment and overturned tables. Three large vats, the endmost also filled with black fungus and the two nearer liberally adorned with green mould of some kind, also draw the attention. The whole chamber stinks, but torches sit in walls sconces, lighting the area.
Note that the brown doorlike thing on the north wall represents the portal you used to enter. It is no longer there.
Everyone - I'm quite happy for you all to swap out something for the feat Pat mentioned above as a freebie. Or, to put it another way, you can retrain it without penalty if you also wish to swap out another power/feat/skill.

Also, I strongly recommend everyone consider retraining to the Essentials Heroic feat, Improved Defenses -- adds <tier> to Fort, Ref, and Will.

Cool, trading-in Paragon Defences for Improved Defences!
Norrin has also retrained Hit and Run for the At-Will Fading Strike.
The ranger looks for the lost piton near the brown door-like thing.
Akemi |
The girl takes off her mask, to reveal an attractive (if somewhat puzzled) young woman.
"I... can understand your speech..." she says carefully, "I speak your language! I - of course. She made it possible."
She continues, "I am Akemi, servant of the kami of knowledge." she looks away for a second, "Ioun. That is what she is called here."
"What is this place?"
Norrin Axebeard |
After a briefly holding the piton up in the air in triumph, Norrin goes over to welcome Akemi.
"Ah! A fellow practitioner of the chopping arts! Don't worry, rides aren't terribly useful here..."
The ranger ponders for a moment, "unless we could get our hands on some sort of giant cave gecko."
He wanders off in search of stuff.
Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (5) + 16 = 21

Norrin gropes through the fungal coating on the nearest vat and feels his fingers close over a small object. Scraping off the coating, he finds he is holding a mithril key topped with the familiar skull of the Devourer.
The other two vats contain nothing of interest beyond an exciting array of fungus. The floor is more rewarding. Searching reveals enough 500gp worth of arcane residue.

Lyan drops neatly into the ten foot deep pit left by Akemi's exit and ploughs into the fungus. Unable to avoid inhaling the spores, he gulps and falls unconscious, landing on the hidden spikes beneath.
Primary attack on entering fungus.
v Fort. On hit, target takes poison damage and is knocked unconscious (se). Unconscious characters fall prone and the spikes at the bottom of the pit make a secondary attack (v AC. Unconscious characters have a -5 penalty to AC).
1d20+16=30 v Lyan's Fort. Hits. 4d8=27 poison damage
Spikes secondary attack:
1d20+18=25. Miss.
27 damage to Lyan and he's prone and unconscious (se)

We'll go with posting order I think unless that looks unfeasible for some reason. Or, to put it another way, your init will be determined by the order in which you post your actions.
Lyan swats at the fungus and realises it is probably destructible with weapons, although doing so will provoke another attack from the flying spores.
To the east, he can see a further stretch of corridor which looks mercifully fungus free.
Lyan Hurzin |
Rev:
Lyan calls out, "To the southeast -- I'll check it!" Suiting action to words, Lyan crouches and his powerful legs propel him to the far hall.
Stag's Leap for Athletics+5, as if running start. 1d20 + 11 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 11 + 5 = 17
That still gets me to clear 3 squares, which seems enough.
Rev DM |
What are the rest of you planning to do? I've posted on Samson's behalf as he's away this weekend.
Samson grits his teeth, joins Lyan in the pit and swipes around the hobgoblin to clear the next fungal square with his spear. Spores fly, but Lyan remembers in time to breath in and takes no further damage.
Attack v Fort.
1d20+16=21. Miss.

Darwyn's nature skills are not particularly strong, but even he realises that wet fungus will not burn. Blowing it away with force may be an option however, as Norrin is quick to spot. The half orc also thinks that remembering to hold ones breath might be a good plan.
Order:
Lyan - gone
Samson - gone
Darwyn - gone
Norrin - gone
