The Strange: Realms Beyond Reality (Inactive)

Game Master Darkfire142

Beneath the orbits and atoms of our natural universe lies a network of dark energy. Those who have learned to access and navigate this chaotic sea have discovered an almost endless set of “recursions” in the shoals of our Earth: Worlds with their own laws of reality, reflected from human experience or imagination, given form in the swirling Chaosphere of the Strange. Worlds teeming with life, with discovery, with incredible treasures, and with sudden death.

And slowly but inexorably, it draws the attention of beings from beyond Earth’s shoals—beings of unfathomable power and evil from the unknown reaches of the STRANGE.

It is Saturday, July 11th, 2015 in Queen’s New York, the time 11 PM. It is a warm summer evening in the Big Apple, the wind mild and the humidity rather prevalent in the air despite it being the night. All of you have been contacted or been referenced to a black market auction that will be taking place in a repurposed storefront at the end of 26th street, a long out of business building once called Super Stud. The auctioneer who goes by the name “Mr. Farston” has promised those in attendance access to state of the art technology that will revolutionize their operations. While vague on what this actually entails this individual has convinced numerous criminal organizations and other unsavory investors that he is on the level and has apparently pulled some influence to get his share of interested buyers.

Some ground rules were set for those who would be attending the auction. No more than two representatives from each major group would be allowed to attend as the venue will be small plus as means of security the auctioneer did not want one group to have a numerical advantage in manpower over the other. Weapons are allowed but no weapons beyond the size of a pistol would be allowed to be brought in. This also is a means of avoiding conflict as if everyone is packing then there will be less of an incentive to cause trouble. A single guest would be allowed if an individual travels alone to the event but they will be responsible for the behaviour of the guest during the auction. There will be security on site and any disruptive behavior will forfeit your right to bid and have you removed from the premises.

As for the protocol, those who are attending are to approach the front door without any weapons drawn, press the call button and give the pass phrase, ”I’m here to pick up some Wigets”, a phrase given only to those approved to come to the auction. Access to the building will be granted to those who say the correct code phrase.

First to arrive on the scene is Julian Thay. He parks his car in a crappy looking lot near the Super Stud. The lot has a few other cars in it of mixed quality, some looking like junkers while others far above the norm for this area. The lot looks very under-maintained, the asphalt probably not replaced in a good number of years and cracks and weeds are abundant. The neighborhood looks to be barren and devoid of life with a number of old abandoned warehouses and apartments. The location for this auction is definitely out of the way of prying eyes, for good or for ill. So for what reason is Julian Thay at this auction and how did he get an invitation?

Dark Archive

Cassie Stone

Cassie Stone waits on a non-descript street for her ride to the auction. While she herself lacked the connections to get into the auction directly her old friend Rico Donati managed to get himself an invitation and as part of this invitation he could take one guest along with him. Calling in a favour Cassie got herself assigned as his guest to take to the auction. Hopefully this would give her a chance to view the new technology and potentially bid on it if it proves to be authentic.

Rico Donati, Cassie's contact pulls up driving a sleek black honda. He pulls up casually to her and rolls down the window. Rico is a man in his mid 30's with vaguely italian features, black hair, olive skin and dressed in semi-casual wear with a button up collarless white shirt with some stylish markings and a pair of black slacks, looking handsome as always. Rico gets his fortunes mainly through running numbers, gambling, racketeering and occasional thefts so he's made quite a living in the Big Apple.

He smiles at her and says, "Hey Cassie girl. Looking good tonight. Hop into my speed wagon and we'll be on our way to the races."

I am mainly due to curiosity and boredom. Plus, I need to lay low after my last scheme went south. For you see I have my great mind to planning crime, mainly thefts. I am never on the seen of course. I am a brain for hire. The invitation was part of my last payment. I should suspect a trap for the previous holder of the invitation, the wanna be crime boss David Mcgern. Ah, but my curiosity has gotten the better of me. I am armed with my hold out pistol.

Does anyone know of a good caliber for a easily concealed, yet not pathetic pistol?

Dark Archive

You can use heavier pistols you just get a +1 difficult shift for not being proficient with it. A walter PPK would be easily concealable buts its a 2 damage gun, A glock would be 4 damage

The Exchange

Walter PPK it is then, thanks

Julian approaches the door to the Super Stud and notices that the door looks like a metal door and has a call button and speaker that looks a bit out of place for this neighborhood. He presses the button and a gruff male voice comes out.

"Yea, what do ya want?

The Exchange

Male Inquisitive Paradox Who Calculates the Incalculable

"now what was that pass phrase again? Ah yes! I am here to pick up some widgets."

I then make sure that all of my belongings are secure before I go in.

Dark Archive

The voice responds, "Right, come on in."

The electronic lock buzzes and the door is opened by a burly looking man in a tuxedo with some clear buldges under his coat hinting some concealed weapons. You step into a lobby area of what probably was the main entry area to this structure. Any shelfing has been removed although there is still signs that there was once some there. There is a counter top however currently manned by another burly looking gentleman dressed similar to the one that opened the door and a third man of similar build and look also in this room. These men look a bit unusual, while clearly different people all three of them share an underbite jaw and have a similar musculature. One man looks different then them however. He appears in his 40's also well dressed in formal wear but much more normal than the burly gentlemen in the room. He appears to be holding a clipboard.

The normal looking man says with a polite voice, "Greetings sir and welcome. May I have your name so I can check you off the guest list. In addition I request you subject yourself to a search and hand over any electronic devices and cellphones that may be used for recording. Mister Farston does not want his presentations to be recorded. Such devices will be returned when you require them or are departing the premises."

One of the burly men goes over to Julian and looks him over. If he wants to hide any recording devices he'll need to make me a Speed check, level 4 (DC 12). If he has some slight of hand or hiding ability he may apply it as an asset.

Marcus Wilmont

Marcus Wilmont is in a lot of trouble with the FBI as well as Eric who has embedded himself further in the mafia hierarchy. With most of his assets seized he called in a favor from Larry McInnis, a member of the Westies who has arranged for him to get Marcus into a secret auction where state of the art technology is being showcased. He learned it would be run by a guy by the name of Mr. Farston, a mysterious gentleman but has somehow been able to convince numerous gangs, mafia, and other independent investors to attend a demonstration of this new technology. How someone low key such as Farston managed to convince so many to attend is anyone's guess.

Marcus arrives at the location dressed low key and he arrives at the Super Stud store location looking pretty nervous about this lowly populated neighborhood. Nonetheless he parks his car out of the way and walks a few blocks rather than leaving his car in the provided lot as while he would be under the protection of Mr. Farston while in the location his car would be fair game. What does he do now?

Marcus looks around at the parking lot next to the Super Stud, peering at his reflection in the dark tinted windows of the nice cars parked there. He fixes his hair a bit, adjusts his jacket and its pockets full of his tools of the trade.
Ensuring that his small emergency pistol is secure behind his belt, he then approaches the door to the Super Stud.

Cassie was dressed in black jeans with a Dark button-down top and a thin, mid-length jacket that covered up both the shoulder holster with the H&K USP .45 and the holster in the small of her back with another USP and her spare mags. Climbing into the car, she smiled at Rico and said "so, how are things?"

She would spend the rest of the time chatting with her old friend on the way to the auction.

Dark Archive

Rico Donati drives his car skillfully through the streets of the city while talking to his friend Cassie.

"Things have been on and off again in the business. There is a new up and comer in the organization named Eric Gael whose promised to change thing around at the top. With Boss Leon getting busted by the Feds we're going to need to restructure to make sure there aren't any other rats in the cupboard. As for this auction, its a real mystery that's for sure. Some british guy called Richard Farston comes to the city, citing that he's sold some advanced technology that has aided in criminal enterprises there and now all the underworld is interested in the shit he's selling. The man's sure got a gift of gab getting so many groups to show up to this event. Just so ya know leave any grudges on the outside when you go there. There is going to be some pretty nasty customers tonight and Farston made it clear of a no violence policy. Plus everyone is likely packing so its mutually assured destruction if you cause shit in there. Since you're my guest, i'm responsible for you so don't mess things up for me ok Cassie?"

Speeding things alone Julian Thay is let inside the structure assuming he follows the directions that were given to him.

He can recon hiding a device if he wants to keep it on his person.

He is lead to another metal door that is opened to reveal a stairway down to the basement and takes the stairs down.

Next to arrive at the door is is Marcus Wilmont.

Assume they say about the same stuff and Marcus Wilmont is let in so long as he gives the correct pass phrase.

Does Marcus introduce his name and allow himself to be searched for recording devices?

Does a GPS tracking device count as a 'recording device'?

The Exchange

Male Inquisitive Paradox Who Calculates the Incalculable

I was waiting for the others to catch up, plus work.

I comply with all instructions. If they prod, I will explain how I have someone else's invite. I do try to keep a pen and notebook so that I can work on equations.

Dark Archive

No it does not count, they do find it but seeing that it is not a recording device it will be given back to Marcus. Their main concern is devices that can record or take pictures.

"Marcus Wilmont. I'm here to pick up some widgets." He tells the guards. Upon being searched, he hands over both cell phones he has on him.

Dark Archive

Marcus Wilmont

The thugs take away the electronic devices and store them in a storage locker. Marcus is given a claim ticket for the locker to retrieve the items when he needs to get them. Marcus is then lead to the metal door and takes a stairway down into the basement.

Cassie "Elan" Stone

Rico pulls up to this beat up area of Queens New York and parks his car in the lot. He looks to Cassie and says, "Welp, here we are. This Farston guys sure knows how to pick a hole in the earth. This neighborhood looks almost abandoned. Anyway I'll do the talking, just back me up and we'll be fine."

Rico gets out of the car and approaches the Super Stud door. He presses the button and a gruff voice answers, "What are ya looking for?"

Rico answers "Yo! How ya doing. Lookin go pick up some Wigets from you all."

The voice responds, "Close enough. Come inside."

The door unlocks and it opens as the burly guard lets them inside. The well dressed servant with the clip board.

Rico tells the man "The name is Rico Donati. I'm here on behalf of the Bonanno family to check out what goods you're selling. This is Cassie my guest tonight"

He checks the board and writes something on it with his pen. "Very well Mr. Donati, you appear to be on the list. Cassie has been written in as your guest and you will be responsible for her behavour during your attendance here. Please hand over any cell phones or other recording devices. Mister Farston does not want the proceedings of this auction to be showcased over any form of media."

Rico nods and says "Its cool, here you go."

He hands over his iphone and pocket tablet although does get a look over by the guard as well to make sure he has nothing else on him. Cassie likewise will be searched and must make a difficulty 4 concealment check if she wants to sneak in any recording devices. The both of you get a claim ticket for a locker and your devices are stored away. You're then lead to the stairway down into the basement behind the metal door.

Retcannon on Rico considering I mixed up Marcus's backstory and forgot that his associations were with the Irish mob in another city. Thought to mix his backstory in to create some tension but it was out of context as I only skimmed his background. Rico works for one of the five italian families and thus discount most of what he said before.

Cassie will give up her burner phone and get a receipt for it, which she will store in the small pocket of her jeans, before going into the building and taking a look around.

Woops, sorry if I didn't make that clear enough! Hopefully it's okay that a lot of my backstory is before New York City - figured it would be okay since you would have the option of characters coming to upset the balance of whatever's going on in New York. It's not vital so I could edit it to be entirely New York if you'd like.

Anyway you all head downstairs to the basement. Down there is a large room that has been decorated and cleaned up and numerous tables with various snack foods have been set up for the guests. A small bar is also set up providing drinks to those who request them. To the right and left seem to be hallways and to the north is a double door with another goon standing in front.

Other than that you see a good number of people in this room of varying sorts. Some are well dressed, others are wearing street clothes but most of them look like tough customers. One thing you also notice is that there is no other women here other than Cassie. It appears that only the men of the gangs showed up. A number of the people are chatting it up and while there is some tension in the room it appears that people are keeping more or less cival during the wait time.

The guard that escorted you says to you, "Stay here until Mr. Farston gives the word the presentation is ready to begin."

He then heads back upstairs.

Cassie being the only girl here gets approached by a chubby looking fellow that looks like he's trying to go steet but has the look of someone just posing.

He says, "Hey babe! Ya know who I am? I'm Blizkreig, the most badass hacker in the world. Finally we got a chick here. Thought this whole event was going to be some kind of sausage fest. So want to see Blitz show you a good time?"

Rico eyes the guy menacingly and says, "Beat it fat boy."

Blitz intimidated puts his hands up, "Woah man be cool. Didn't know she had a date. Just being friendly and all. Its cool. Hope Farston can get ya what ya need tonight K? Ok well I'll get a drink. Sorry for any misunderstanding."

With that he moves away with some haste to the bar to get another drink.

Jillian approaches Blitzkrieg.

Blitz looks to Julian, "Hey Julian! I ain't no third rate hacker. I got my invitation here didn't I? Mr. Farston recognized my skills. I'm looking to get my hands on some top notch hardware. I heard a rumor that they've got an item that will allow you to break through any kind of security without a trace. And I'm lookin to put in a heavy bid here by redirecting some funds."

Marcus

You notice with your street knowledge representives from a good number of gangs and maffia in New York City

The following gangs have a representive.

The Maras: A central american gang involved in Arms Trafficing among their many actvities.

Jamaican Possie: Known for their gun battles and drive by shooting reps.

La Raza: A mexican gang involved a lot in the south american drug trade.

Jheri Curls: Dominican gang reputed to sell the best Cocane on the market.

The Black Gansta Disciples: Major afro-american gang in the city.
Westies: Irish Gang out of Hells Kitchen involved in large extorition rings.

Tongs: The premere chinease gang in New York, involved heavely in smuggling.

Marielitos: Cuban gang, involved in trafficing and contract killing.

The Crips: A gang with groups throughout the US, enemy of the Bloods

The Bloods: A gang with groups throughout the US, enemy of the Crips.

There are also representatives of the Italian Mob and Irish Mob here as well. A few independents as well including that fat ass Blizkreig who seems to be making an ass of himself.

Cassie

You notice with knowledge of gangs the same thing that Marcus does. There is a good deal of rough customers here. It surprises you how Farston was able to bring them all together in one place.

Rico says to Cassie, "Well Cassie, might be good for you to lay low for now. There may be peeps here that have it in for you. I'll go mingle and try and keep the attention off of you. Hopefully this Auction will start soon and we can start bidding on what we need."

Before he leaves, Cassie says "If I get captured by them, tell them that you lured me here specifically for that purpose. No sense in both of us being wanted by them."

Cassie will then find an out-of-the way spot to watch the auction.

Dark Archive

Rico nods to Cassie and heads off to mingle with a number of the visitors there. He puts on a good front and draws their attention enough that they pay little attention to Cassie's presence.

Eventually after about half an hour the double door opens and out of it comes a tall and attractive blonde woman standing at a height of 6 feet. She has flowing blonde hair that hangs nearly off her shoulders and a fair and flawless skin tone. She is dressed in an attractive white dress and wears on her wedding finger a diamond ring with a large rock. Also around her neck is a gold necklace with a blood red gemstone. Among the most striking thing is her eyes that have a slight reddish hue to them.

She puts on a friendly demeanor and raises her voice and says "Welcome everyone to the auction. Allow me to introduce myself am Elise Farston and my husband is now ready to showcase the items that are up for bidding." Her voice is very pure English, hinting that she's not from this country.

One of the Black Gansta representatives gets in her face and yells. "Yo you ho! What took so long? We be chillin here waiting for your pimp for half an hour. Why he's got his b!@#& doing the talking for him?"

The woman's friendly demeanor turns into a scowl as she seems to grit her teeth, which are perfectly white by the way. She then says, [i]"I will not tolerate such outburst of such foul manors in my abode. If you wish to remain in my good graces I suggest you apologize for your ill conceived words you low and uneducated Ruffian."

The ganger seems a bit confused on her words at first but then processes it as an insult and yells, "Enough back talk you ho!"

He attempts to backhand her but the Elise deflects the slap with one arm and with the other strikes the man with a solid blow to his throat. The ganger choking from the blow to his throat is off guard and the woman proceeds to deliver a kick to his chest that sends him sprawling to the floor.

His colleague tries to step in but is immediately grabbed by one of the bruisers.

Giving a look of contempt she says to the bruisers "Toss these troublemakers back on the streets. They are not worth our time."

The bruisers drag away the BGD's back upstairs while other upstarts seeing how well Elise handled herself cease any other objections.

After straightening her dress she assumes her friendly demeanor and says, "Well then, I do apologize for that outburst. But no matter, we have an auction to perform do we not? Please move into the next room and take a seat on the chairs provided. Thank you for indulging our hospitality."

With that you're lead into a larger room. Some comfy looking folding chairs have been set up for the guests as well as some makeshift barriers to divide the guest area from the display area. Indeed there is a number of displays set up. Numerous dummies and mannequins as well as what looks like a brick wall prop and odd of all a glass covered box with what looks like a dead but preserved pig on the inside. In the center of the presentation area is a large table with a black sheet covering it. There are bulges in the sheet hinting something is indeed under it.

In the room is a handsome looking man with dark brown hair dressed in an expensive looking business suit in the height of modern fasion. He stands at a moderate 6"2. His chocolate brown eyes seem to have an unearthly magnetism. Next to him is one of his goons probably acting as a personal bodyguard.

I give her an amused look as I pass. As I enter I take a moment to calculate the best seat to view everything, then sit down. If I am interfering with any group's attempt to stay together, I stubbornly refuse to move.

Marcus watches the situation and makes a mental note not to trifle with the Farstons. A shame, because the jewelry looked quite nice, but perhaps one of the less organized gangs might buy something worth... borrowing.

Dark Archive

There are an abundance of chairs set up for everyone to sit in.

Mr. Farston says also speaking with a british sounding accent "Greetings and welcome to the auction I have set up this evening. Please everyone take a seat and get comfortable for what I have to show you will be far more than you can ever imagine."

People take their seats but there are some grumbles of people who are sceptical.

Once everyone is seated he says, "Allow me to introduce myself for those who have not met me. I am Richard Farston, the developer of this new technology that will revolutionize your very existance. I have created this auction as many of these devices have properties that could be rather... controversial to say the least on the open market, thus the clientele of these devices are only for a select few, you of course being the customers. I would like to introduce you to the wonders of Cypher Technology. Now you might ask what this technology is? Well I shant bore you with the scientific details as I am sure most of you judge the results rather than the methodology. Thus here is what you will be bidding on tonight."

With a swift motion he pulls the sheet off the table and on it lies five oddly shaped devices. One looks like a high tech grenade, one looks like a some kind of dial on a wearable pin, one device looks like some kind of high tech looking gun and two of them appear to be strange rounded devices with glowing runes on the front of them (One blue, one red).

The Exchange

Male Inquisitive Paradox Who Calculates the Incalculable

My good sir, I would like to know more about these items. Or were you just getting to that? Also, I would be most interested in knowing more of the science behind these devices when there is a better time.

Dark Archive

Richard gives a look to Julian and says, "Ah a fellow scientist I see. I will gladly discuss some of the science behind the development of these devices with you at a future time. For now though I wish to show you what these devices do.

He reaches over and picks up the round object with the blue glowing runestone. "The first device I would like to reveal to you is one I call a "Ice Ray Emitter". A device that can freeze a target solid with a ray of crygenic energy."

He picks up the device and points it a hanging dummy on a rope on the ceiling. He presses the button and a blue light of energy shoots out and strikes the dummy. Instantly it freezes into a block of ice so cold that the rope its attached to also freezes and the weight of the dummy to fall to the floor surrounded in a solid block of ice. The room also noticeably drops a few degrees.

When this happens Julian, Cassie and Marcus have an odd sensation flow through them as they feel somewhat energized in some way. They feel an odd tingle that seems to flow through them. The tingling soon ceases but the feeling is at least disconcerting. There is gasps and words spreading throughout the crowd as no one expected this to happen.

Marcus sits away from where the Westies' representatives were sitting and leans around a tall Mara to take a better look at the pin on the table

Woops, you posted in between the time I refreshed. This was meant for before the demo.

Dark Archive

Richard Farston smirks and then says, "It seems I have your attention now. The devices I have have properties that reevaluate the very boundaries of science. Now to further prove my point I am offering one of you the chance to demonstrate my next device."

One brave La Maras man steps up and says, "Hey Loco, that ice ray thing was cool. I'll step up and take on the next device ya got."

Richard says, "Ah a brave volunteer, please come forward and pick a device from the table."

The La Maras takes the gun looking object. "Yo Farston, what does this thing do? Some kind of lighting gun?"

Richard says, "No unfortunately although creating such an item is not beyond my ability. That is a Zero Point Energy projector. By shooting a target it wraps them in a field of anti-gravity and allows you move the object by moving the device. Please point that device at that large weight I have set up."

He points to a large metal weight that is set up. "This is a 500 pound weight, something this device can easily pick up. Just point the device at it and press the trigger and you could manipulate this object. You can use the side buttons to move the object away or towards you."

The La Maras says, "Woah sounds cool Farston. Time to lift some pounds."

He points the device at the weight and presses the button. A hazy looking ray shoots out and hits the weight and it is surrounded by a hazy energy. The La Maras moves the gun and the weight moves with his motions of the gun the heavy weight moving easily with the motions of the gun. He then fiddles with the buttons making the weight move closer or father away.

The La Maras says, "You ain't lying Loco. This is one beneo gun yose got here."

Marcus adjusts his jacket at the odd tingling chill and then speaks up. "What is the small pin?"

Dark Archive

Richard looks to Marcus and says, "Ah yes, the pin. One of my favourites. It is a phase module. This pin allows its wearer to become out of phase making them both completely indestructible to physical attack as well as the ability to walk through solid objects."

"I would like to know what sort of counter measures exist against such marvelous tech? Also, was that weird feeling normal? Did anyone else feel that?"

The Westie representing stands up and yells, "If these devices can't be recharged then what are we bidding on?"

Richard says, "A service. I sell the devices and I get continued business by recharging the devices whenever they are depleted. I assure you these devices cannot be duplicated nor will you have the means of recharging them without my recharging methods."

"I am not familiar with dark matter being referred to as an energy, sorry. I have heard of dark matter being referred to as some sort of mysterious place holder for the universe. I am afraid that physics is not one of my main interest. Which is sort of funny for a math expert." I then let out a quick laugh, which probably seems to come out of nowhere for those who are not listening in.

Dark Archive

Richard smirks at Julian's comment and says to him, "Surely you know Einsteins theories do you not? That matter and energy are interchangeable. Then if Dark Matter exists as a form of matter then is it not as well interchangeable as a source of energy?"

After fiddling with the Zero Point Energy emitter for a minute it powers down and the 500 pound weight falls to the ground making a loud thud hinting it was indeed a large amount of weight. The La maras fiddles with the buttons and says, "What is this shit. Its not working anymore."

Richard plucks the device from the man's hands and says, "As I said before, the energy used in these devices is short term only. Varying on the device it can last a vairable amount of time."

Someone else in the group says, "What's the other devices do?"

Richard says, "Well that is what I am here to show you aren't I?" he says with a flurish of his hand.

With that the showcase continues. The next object he shows is the grenade-like device. He introduces it as a Flesh Destroying Grenade. It destroys organic material in its explosive radius but leaves non-organic materials unharmed. He demonstrates by pressing a button on the grenade-like and tossing it into the display case with the dead pig. There is a flash of light and the pig is vaporised leaving only a pile of fine white powder and the cloth that the pig was draped in falls on top and the powered down grenade is nothing but a pile of shards. He mentions he has a spare one of these devices as the grenade is a one use only item and not rechargeable.

He then shows another device that he introduces as a Heat Ray Emitter. He uses it and it literally cuts a dummy in half like a knife through butter as well as cutting through the brick wall that lies behind it.

The last item he showcases is the Phase Module which he gives to his goon who activates it by turning the dial on the front and looks hazy. He then does some stress tests like walking through solid walls and objects as well as standing in front of a wall and getting sprayed with an Usi, the bullets going right through him. After a minute though the device powers down and the goon become solid again. This device however seems to be the most popular as the applications of such a device are numerous.

Richard then answers a few questions from some of those gathered there. Some offer him a partnership if he can sell the schematics to mass produce these devices. He refuses stating such devices cannot be duplicated on a mass scale due to the unique components and charging process involved. Plus he wants to give exclusivity to the few rather than the many. He states plainly that these devices as by his words they cannot be duplicated or reverse-engineered. There is some grumbles as some people don't believe him but he defiantely seems confident on this fact.

Do you spitball any other questions at Richard? Otherwise he'll will dismiss everyone for an hour back into the main gathering area while he "Recharges" the devices and give people a chance to negotiate with their funding sources before the bidding begins. Those who need to make some calls are free to go upstairs and retrieve their media devices in order to make arrangements with any outside contacts.

Marcus finds his way to where Julian and Cassie are.
"Did you two feel strange when he showed off the first device too?" he asks.
