Morning light streams in through the stained glass windows of the Cathedral of Aroden in Almas. A desk, crossed with lines like battle scars sits in the center of the room, several chairs arrayed around it. The summons sent this morning told the pathfinders to meet here for the meeting, and other than being urgent was very vague on the subject matter.

Sit and chat with your fellow pathfinders to character build! When everything's ready, I'll post the mission.

He looks quite uncomfortable for he has never spent much time in a Cathedral before and does not want to offend anyone. A dagger and sling are attached to his belt. He is wearing plain navy blue robes.

He reaches a hand out to Q'lack " Why hello there Prince, was it Q'lack? I have never encountered someone of... umm... your kind before in my years working in the shop. The pleasure is all mine!

He looks a bit shocked to see Grippli but does his best to hold his social graces.

A tall Chelaxian steps into the room. He's wearing a rich wool cloak dyed a deep blue. Out of the back peeks the handle of a sword. You can also see a few kinds of knives on his belt along with a folded net. He sighs. "Well, I guess this is it." He looks around at the gnome, a beautiful woman with a cat, and a frogman. He sighs again. "I don't know if the Paracountess is punishing me or thinks so highly of my skills as to saddle me with tending to newcomers."

He steps forward. His voice is like smooth silk that's been shredded to have a ragged edge. "Listen up, I'm Aiden Richter. I hear there's a missing person we need to find. Plunder and Peril Ship 1 Plunder and Peril Ship 2

Let us begin! INCOMING WALL OF TEXT!

After a few more moments, three men enter the room. Venture-Captain Brackett quickly sits down behind the large desk, and he scans a handful of papers before speaking to the team, with him is the no-nonsense wizard Wystorn Telfyr and Major Colson Maldris.

“I recently received news of a kidnapping in Sauerton, up in the northern wine country. Thalia Andares, heir to the Sauerton Red wine fortune and daughter of Consul Tercio Andares, vanished during the Silverglazer Sunday celebration and has not been seen since.”

With a meaningful look, Maldris catches Brackett’s attention, and the two nod in understanding as the major contributes.

“Tercio Andares is powerful and widely respected; not only has he been the mayor of the large town for many years, but he is also a strong voice in the Andoren military—even for a consul. The Sauerton Red winery has made him extremely wealthy, and his financial support could be a considerable asset to the Pathfinders’ important work in and around the Worldwound. He seems uninterested in foreign affairs, though, perhaps because it’s politically safer to focus on domestic matters. Even so, he is known to help those who help him.”

“I appreciate the summary, major,” says Brackett. “I am convinced that the Andares’s gratitude would do much to refill our war chest for a struggle that is unlikely to end quickly. When you track down Thalia, as I trust you will do quickly, it is important not only to the Pathfinder Society but perhaps to the whole world that you request funding for the military campaign against the Worldwound. Of course, convincing Tercio to contribute troops and military aid would be even better, but aim for finances first.”

With a sigh, Major Maldris picks up his tricorne hat and
prepares to depart.

“I would stay longer, but I must make final preparations to travel,” he states in a quiet voice. “While I hopethat the Andares family agrees to help the society, I am also wary of this political practice of mutual backscratching. As all of you are in Sauerton—especially those who care for this fine country—remain vigilant for signs of short-sighted corruption and abandonment of Andoran’s founding principles: freedom and democracy. Follow what you believe to be the best course of action, as I will not be available to advise you. Nonetheless, I would appreciate any reports of corruption after the situation is resolved.”

After sharing a quick handshake with Brackett and a nod of farewell to the rest of you, he departs, closing the door behind him.

Telfyr breaks the moment of silence that follows by reporting,

“My scrying indicates that the young Andares is being held in a building with high ceilings and once-elegant adornments in a style popular in this nation before the People’s Revolt. The structure seems to have sustained extensive fire damage which has not been repaired. Thalia is alive and unhurt, at least for now. She was reading a fresh copy of the essays of Alysande Benedict when I saw her.”

Brackett begins to bring the briefing to a close by concluding, “We have transportation ready to take you to Sauerton as quickly as possible. When you arrive, present this letter to Consul Andares before you begin your investigation. It introduces you and offers the condolences and assistance of the Pathfinder Society. Not only is this proper etiquette to announce your intentions to the mayor, but Thalia vanished from the Andares manor. Someone there should be able to make sense of Telfyr’s visions.

Telfyr frowns at Brackett’s diction. “Scrying, Brackett, is diff–“

“Alright, yes, scrying,” the venture-captain concedes as he pushes a sealed letter across the table. “Introductions, rescue operation, then negotiation for funding and possible military support. Make any questions quick; you’ve got a boat to catch.”

Diplomacy (Gather information) or Knowledge Local DC10+:
Tercio Andares is mayor of Sauerton, one of the consuls who administer Andoran’s military, and owner of the extremely successful Sauerton Red winery.

Diplomacy (Gather information) or Knowledge Local DC15+:
Andares has generally remained popular in Sauerton despite the town suffering from a rash of attacks by wild beasts from the Verduran Forest in recent years, as his winery employs much of the town directly or indirectly, and it is rare for any public figure to suggest Andares might be responsible for any problems.

Diplomacy (Gather information) or Knowledge Local DC20+:
A few unpopular individuals around Sauerton say that the Andares family is rotten, and that anyone who makes trouble for Tercio or his kin is quickly and quietly encouraged to leave town.

Knowledge Geography or Knowledge Local DC10+:
Sauerton is infamous for its cheap and widely distributed wine, called Sauerton Red. It has become immortalized in an Andoren proverb that something of
poor quality “must be down from Sauerton."

Knowledge Geography or Knowledge Local DC15+:
Sauerton is a large town located in wine country in northeast Andoran, about equally distant from the Andoshen River, which is used to ship wine to Andoran’s
southern ports for export, and the Verduran Forest, which occupies much of the tense border with Taldor and Galt.

Knowledge Geography or Knowledge Local DC20+:
Sauerton has been a site of productive vineyards for centuries, and the once-noble Andares family has been a major owner of those vineyards since long before the People’s Revolt. Although the Andares family chose to give up their noble privileges during the revolt, nearly every mayor of Sauerton in the 44 years since has been a member or close relative of the Andares family.

Knowledge Geography or Knowledge Local DC25+:
The local captain of the guard Merton Demrick has publicly petitioned for more funds to hire additional guards, claiming the current numbers are too few, but he
has not received enough support from Mayor Andares or the townspeople to implement the change.

Knowledge Geography or Knowledge Local DC30+:
A local vineyard’s villa was burned down in a then-famous fire about the time of the People’s Revolt by a spiteful noble belonging to the Sauer family. It seems likely to fit the description given by Wystorn Telfyr.

You would have to ask around the Andares manor for more information on defenses and protections, but I have heard the manor was empty aside from Thalia because her father, the servants, and town guards were out attending the Silverglazer Sunday celebration. She's been described as "Exceedingly bookish and willful" and had stayed behind stating she wished to be left alone. According to her father, she didn't much like festivities and had no desire to join in, simply wanting the evening to study in quiet. It was only after the festivities when they returned that she was found missing, though more than that you would have to ask the people there.

The venture-captain nods and shakes his head.

Messy business.... Andoran used to be ruled by Cheliax, but when Cheliax's hold loosened, the Andorans, who where sick and tired of being ruled over by aristocrats and nobles, especially demonic ones, overthrew them and instituted a concept called "Democracy". But, unlike nearby Galt, which executed everyone even remotely related to the nobles, and still to this day will "Execute" anyone they can call a noble, Andoran ended the revolution surprisingly peacefully... Nobles who where willing to give up their titles and pay hefty restoration taxes where allowed to join society without much loss. The experiment in this "Freedom Trade Democracy" thing has made the entire country extremely wealthy in a very short period of time. No one is 100% sure how Andoran has avoided Galt's fate and become a stable nation, though many believe the common rallying cause against slavery has helped bind them together.

He tilts his head back and runs his hand along his chin.

It's certainly possible... the Andares are ex-nobles who gave up their titles to remain in Andoran, could be someone has a problem with them. Either people bitter about them keeping the wealth they did, or nobles angry at them for "Betraying" their titles.

"Political kidnappings are common in Taldane unfortunately. Perhaps these have spread. I'm not very 'up' on Andaran geography... is this town near a border that she may have been spirited over? "

Holy wall of text, Batman!

Can't say I'm the authority on Andoran's local politics, but I'm just like my guns - point me in the right direction and pull the trigger, and I'll make sure your problem is taken care of. Persephone smiles slightly. Nigel is right; we've got an heiress to find, and there's no sense in letting time waste. We'll be far more likely to find this decades-old fire-damaged building if we're nearby to stare straight at it.

No questions from me. Good to go!

The venture captain nods.

If you want to do any shopping, now is the time to do it! Otherwise, we'll move to the next area.

When Eroil looks at us, Nigel just shrugs and looks just as confused. Politics that don't effect my business have never been my forte. I am grateful our captain here was able to give us a brief and understandable history. I was worried he would sound like one of the wizards my father hired to train my magic; a lot of words with no understanding. But I think I understand the picture, at least a little bit.

Nigel is acting anxious and nervous for the trip now. Where he once was excited, the importance of a real quest has made this all more real to him.

The Venture Captain nods and waves the pathfinders out.

You have a job to do pathfinders. Do us proud.

The PCs’ voyage up the Andoshen River is swift, and they enjoy good weather until the last hour, when a light rain begins to fall. The Andares’s manor is not difficult to find, being one of several dozen stately homes still standing in the town as functional reminders of a past age’s nobility. Most of Sauerton appears well maintained, and although the seasonal workers who arrived a few months earlier to help pick the grapes have since departed, several presses are still set up in the town square—the residents await the return of fairer weather so they can resume their wine production.

As the PCs navigate Sauerton, a halfling wearing light armor and a rain-spattered helmet hails them,

Hallo! Pathfinders!

He jogs up to them, light splashes accompanying small footsteps.

Names Captain Merton Demrick! It's good to see you! We can use whatever skills you might be bringing! The sooner Ms. Thalia is found, the better!

He shields his eyes for a moment and says, not quite shouting to be heard over the rain.

Let me get you to the mansion! No sense talking out here in this!

He leads the team quickly to the Andares mansion which stands at the edge of a beautiful green and has a facade dominated by fine marble pillars. The manor is tall and as imposing inside as out.

Knowledge Engineering 15+:
Chelish architecture, but the marble pillars are new editions, largely ornamental.

The Halfling captain rushes up to the door and beats on it a few times.

A thin, hook-nosed woman with graying brown hair held in a tight bun—answers the door.

No visitors! The master is busy!

The Halfling pipes up, giving the old woman a bit of a startle.

Dorabeth! It's me! I've brought the pathfinders! Let us in out of this damnable rain already!

She haughtily sniffs for a moment before letting out a exasperated sigh.

Demrick, your going to drive me to a early grave you toadstool.

The Halfling ducks inside the door and motions everyone else in.

Not possible, I'm pretty sure you're already calcified Dorabeth.

The two's banter seems mostly friendly, if a bit tense.

Make sure to wipe your feet! Dorabeth commands the pathfinders as they enter, giving a distinct look of disdain at the grippli member. If you track any mud in here, I'll throw you back into the rain myself!

Once everybody is inside, she ushers the team into a waiting room.

I do apologize. Dorabeth says. But the master is in a meeting right now... you will simply have to wait a few minutes until he's finished... are you here about Ms. Thalia?

The old woman shakes her head.

Weren't nobody here the night the young miss disappeared. Such a tragedy...

She leans over to the pathfinders and gives a conspiratorial glance and stage whispers to them.

Course, I've heard a few things around town...

The Halfling captain groans.

Dorabeth you chattering ninny, the pathfinders have real investigating to do, not waste time with your mad tales!

She kicks him... well, it would have been in the shin, but for him it's more like a knee, and gives a dramatic sigh and sniff.

Here I am, trying to find the missus, and you brand me with such lies Demrick! I'm sure they want to hear about how I heard that Kyonin elves have crossed the border, and are going to sacrifice dear Ms. Thalia to one of their horrid forest gods! Course, the ladies at the market say that a Chelish spy has stolen her away, and hidden her body in one of her father's wine casks as revenge!

The captain groans again... though if it's at the proposed scenario or the kick, your not quite sure.

Sense Motive 10+:
It's the story. He believes no such poppycock.

Sense Motive 15+:
She's not... lying exactly. She seems to really be concerned about the girl, but also seems to be an incorrigible gossip.

Not that he's shared with the guard... but I'll be frank, I've dealt with kidnappings before, if he's been threatened to keep the authorities out of it, he may not even tell us if he did. Specially if his girl is threatened if he talks to us.

Not that I've heard... just the guards, and you pathfinders, though the Consul is in talks with a another consul, Consul Sander Bryton. He works alongside General Reginald Cormoth, who's in charge of the Eagle Knights....

Diplomacy/Gather Info, Knowledge Local 10+:
Sander Bryton is a consul, one of the elected officials responsible for directing Andoran’s military.

Diplomacy/Gather Info, Knowledge Local 15+:
Although the consul General Reginald Cormoth is the head of the Eagle Knights, Sander Bryton often assists the general directly in deciding Eagle Knight actions and policy.

Diplomacy/Gather Info, Knowledge Local 20+:
The Bryton amily—all successful military leaders going back four generations—has been prominent ever since the People’s Revolt. At no time has the elected national government not included a Bryton

Diplomacy/Gather Info, Knowledge Local 25+:
Immediately after Tercio Andares joined the People’s Council, Sander Bryton mysteriously reversed his position on an important trade agreement, clearing the way for the Andares family’s Sauerton Red wine to become the household name it is today throughout the Inner Sea region
