Map

You've finally reached the very hart of the ancient seat of the Runelord of Greed, the Pinnacle of Avarice.

A massive ice-shrouded tower of white granite that soars 2,200 feet in the air, ending just below the carved face at the mountain's peak.

The inside of the immense structure soars like a cavernous silo, supported by an intricate architectural wonder of flying buttresses and arches. Hundreds of 50-foot-tall arches around the structure's base allow access to its ground floor, which is a huge circular room that encompasses a 200 foot diameter polished stone circle surrounded by 16 immense pillars that rise up like the legs of a spider to support the central column that extends up to another floor more than 2,000 feet above.

A spiraling ramp wraps around the outer circumference of the lower 16 pillars up to the central column, continuing up its length and giving the central column the appearance of an immense screw.

The seemingly infinite stone ramp finally comes to an end here. A massive pair of golden double doors stands to the north, while a smaller golden door to the west allows an alternative route onward. Intricate carvings on the walls evoke images of Xin-Shalast in its heyday, accented with vibrant paint and inlaid gems here and there. The highly polished floor consists of a checkerboard pattern of gold and black tiles, while the entire place is brilliantly lit by what appear to be dozens of bejeweled everburning torches in equally decadent sconces.

Finally you see a collection of tall, silent giants standing near the doors that appear indifferent to your approach. They all bear the mark of the Sihedron as a brand on their foreheads.

Before we dive down into the temple, Vuvu prepares himself, extending a heroism, casting echolocation, extending mirror image 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9, and using triple time on everyone, then eh turns invisible with his ring of invis

That would be O2 then. Sometimes the grid coordinates act funny in Map tools, especially when you have to adjust the grid right!

Sadly since there aren't any interactive maps for RotRL I won't be able to remove the native grids/map keys I think this issue will probably continue to crop up- so just ignore them if you can, or ask me what the coordinates are.

Before starting the search below Avoreal would cast her buff spells.

Buffs/Some Party Wide so Look:

Extended Foresight(6 hours, 20 mins)
Mindblank(19 hours)
Momenet of Prescience(19 hours)
Extended Mass Fly(6 hours, 20 mins for each party member)
Greater False Life(19 hours) 2d10 + 19 ⇒ (5, 7) + 19 = 31
Extended Heroism(6 hours, 20 mins)
Extended Mirror Image(38 mins) 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Extended Shield(38 mins)

GM:

With the spell Foresight active she has a sixth sense of impending danger, so therefore she has a general idea of what action to take to best protect herself.. Past GM's have played this differently, most have given her warnings on traps/glyph spells and other nasties, so ill leave it up to you on how to use it. Just remember that its a 9th level spell please..

She tries to determine what type of giants these are..

Avoreal:

Noted! Based on the description I'll probably give you the same warnings regarding traps and glyphs I'll try and give you a heads up about possible tactics while it's active based on the text.

A one right out of the gate, a good sign of things to come.

Avoreal, you recognize the giants as four cloud giants and a storm giant.

Cloud giants are known for their ability to inflict awesome attacks that can drive a normal sized person back as much as 10 feet and knock them prone; they can levitate and summon a dense mist at will; and they have a habit of throwing boulders at those who displease them.

Storm giants are generally good natured sorts - to see one here with the Sihedron brand is to see true corruption at work. Creatures of thunderclouds, they are immune to electricity, unable to be hindered such that they may as well have freedom of movement constantly, and can summon lightning bolts that scorch across the earth continuously for many minutes.

As if the huge morning stars and greatsword weren't enough to worry about.

The halfling Venture-Captain follows along behind the party on the way to the ancient city. Oh what a treat! The book I'll be able to write of this adventure! To think that the Ten trusted me with such a mission!

"Good to see you again Vuvu and Avoreal! A fine structure isn't it? Let me look it over before the brute squad knocks down the front door."

T20 for a 59 Perception looking for traps on the entrance.

@GM: for future reference, Trotter has trap spotter so he gets an automatic Perception check when within 10' of a trap.

Trotter then takes out his own extend metamagic rod and casts greater heroism, see invisibility and mirror image before stowing the rod again. He also casts detect scrying. He then takes out his quicken metamagic rod in one hand and nods his head that he is ready to enter.

Greater Heroism for 17 minutes.
Mirror Images (1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 maximum 8 images) for 17 minutes.
See Invisibility for 170 minutes.
Detect Scrying for 24 hours.

Map

Thanks for the heads up Trotter!

Trotter, you don't see any traps moving up to the first sets of doors leading further in to the hidden recesses of the ancient tower.

Apparently the Runelord of Greed thought the 2000 feet climb by staircase and five tame giants as doorkeepers was intimidating enough to dispense with traps here - little did he suspect that the Pathfinder Society would exist, much less find such hearty explorers to brave the forbidden reaches of the world, in ages to come.

My reaction to what just happened.

Vars's aggressive, some might say foolhardy, approach to the literal giant guards causes the one he hit to roar in pain, and the guards begin to stir into motion.

OK, now I really do need positions. Vuvu is/was at O2 and Vars, for lack of concern about the clearly outclassed 15-foot-tall killing machines, is at H19 because that's basically where I think he'd be if he rounded a corner and thought "I can kill that." I've sort of clustered you at the back for purposes of this diagram.

Now I may or may not have been thrown out of charm school, but I won't presume that you're going to let Vars simply fly ahead of you in order to attack the human mountains by his lonesome. So let me know where, in relation to Vars, you start since you're beginning the round.

Avoreal:

You get the sense that if you engaged at range the cloud giants, excepting the one Vars is currently slashing at with surprising success, would begin to throw boulders at you as opposed to closing to engage.

"thank yoo Lord Vars!"

Duhwoo charges through the air, flying up right next to Vars (H18) -- perhaps a bit higher up on the target:

Map

Duhwoo may not speak with the panache of a Taldan courtier but his falchion strikes with nothing less than elegance as it cuts deep into the giant.

The sword cuts a huge swath through the giant's leg and its bellow echoes loudly amongst the stone chamber, and you can swear in the distance you hear an avalanche in response.

Trotter, you still get to act in the surprise round. If you think you can make the nauseated, staggered giants feel worse that is.

I believe Duhwoo can simply 5' step from H18 to G17 and wail away at square E16 -- which happens to be the corner of a giant -- using Lunge. As always, he will use Power Attack, Reckless Abandon, and "Come and Git Me":

note that with "Come and Git Me" active all melee attacks on Duhwoo are made at +4 to hit and +4 to damage

Map

Vars, the crit does indeed kill the first giant with his critical hit, then the next giant falls to the attacks made by Duhwoo.

The storm giant grunts as he absorbs damage from the magic missile of Avoreal.

Back to Trotter.

@GM: can you post the link to the map at the top of the page or somewhere easily accessible? It's hard to find it looking back through old posts sometimes.

Trotter decides to help out and unloads his pistol on any giants still standing.

Swift action to activate luck (+4 attack/damage/saves/skills). Lingers for two rounds.

Trotter's pistol is a +1 distance lucky reliable pistol so goes against touch out to 40'.

Move +1 attack and damage if further than 30'.

luck +4, deadly aim, no precise shot, point blank, rapid shot, greater heroism

No worries, please see the link under my name for my most up-to-date map.

Trotter's bullets drive hard into the remaining giants, drilling once into the two cloud giants and twice into the Storm Giant.

Unable to resist due to the pernicious effects of the magic from Vuvu and Avoreal, the Storm Giant throws open the doors behind him and the cloud giants flee through. You can hear them calling to others in the room they flee into.

Intruders come to despoil the master's plans! You must help us stop them!

Oh you guys are back up - they're all nauseated by Vuvu so they each get one move action.

Vars will close to the nearest giant and give it a love tap.

confirm: 1d20 + 42 ⇒ (2) + 42 = 44 damage: 2d8 + 74 ⇒ (3, 2) + 74 = 79 the giant is exhausted and needs to make a DC 28 fortitude save or be staggered for 1d4 ⇒ 3 rounds, or 1 round if he saves

Map

The storm giant at the door is clearly on his last legs.

Fortitude: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (9) + 20 = 29
Fortitude: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (15) + 20 = 35

He does resist being dazed.

Vars, storm giants can't be staggered as they have a constant freedom of movement effect on them (they can be nauseated however - curse you Vuvu!) - this also applies to you when you have freedom of movement on you.

Reason for ruling - freedom of movement specifically mentioned it includes all movement impeding abilities, including slow which applies the staggered condition. See here and here.

This is one of the pieces of information Avoreal learned from her Knowledge (Local) roll, don't know if she communicated it to Vars however.

I can't see it surviving long enough to worry.

And I was right!

Duhwoo and Vars vicious attacks fell the Storm giant - too impotent to even attack you as it fails in its charge.

Not for sure whats still alive.. 2 cloud giants?

Gotcha, need to know and all that. It is two cloud giants who are up.

The cloud giant, still on fire from Vuvu's sick burn, take even more damage from the scorching power of Avoreal's magic.

It screams in pain - an almost heartbreaking sound - and Avoreal can tell it's pleading with others beyond the giant that fled with it through the doors.

I had never said exactly where I moved to, but I should be within a move of them after the vomit fest I started

Vuvu moves to 15 feet away from the giant at the door and whips it.

You have been a very bad giant! Or perhaps we are pathfinders and potentially murder hobos.
