The Spider's Web: A game of assassins and mistrust.

Game Master Tark the Ork

51 to 94 of 94 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

Looks like this is slowing down quite a tad so let me go through the current crop of candidates adn see what can be seen.

May I present Psyana Rashkar - Tiefling Witch --> Tirion's Submission.

--> Ignore Tirion's prior response, I am pretty sure he was drunk - or at least does not know me.

WTF - this character was almost finished, and now it has all reverted to changes made on Monday. I will get her fixed.

Answers:

Answer the following questions in whatever way you deem fit (In or out of character)

1. What can you bring to our organization?
Agility and intelligence. I do not do anything without having thought through the process. After watching my mark, I carefully plan to assure that my goals are obtained.

Also, I have a long history of living out of sight. I was the unwanted bastard child of noble and her tryst with something from the lower planes. I loath those in power and enjoy seeing them suffer my wrath. I have no ties to this land or its infernal controllers.

2. Why should we trust you?
In this business, if one does not have honor, then one will find her companions' knives in her back. There are only three kinds of people in this business: the trustworthy, the immortal, and the dead. As I am not yet immortal and do not plan on being dead, I strictly adhere to the trustworthy category.

In our business, turning on your employer and companions usually results in a quick, and painful, death.

3. What future do you see with us?
The ability to do what I enjoy most, hurting people. Whether it is a quick and silent death, or a slow painful torture, this is what I do best. As long as the challenge and the reward is commiserate with my skills, I see a long future. However, as noted above, if you or anyone else turns on me, then there may be problems for one or both of us.

4. How religious are you?
Religion is a tool. Look at all the sheep in this land. Four generations ago they worshipped Aroden, he was the savior, the great power. Then he died and all in Cheliax turned to devils. Religion is no different than any other business, brain wash your customers so that they continue to buy what you have to sell. Each religion may have moral and ethical values, but the religions themselves are simply attempts to control the proletariat.

5. Your target is sitting in his study smoking a pipe. Next to him is his prized warhound. Across from him his maid is quietly dusting the mantle of the well lit fireplace where a blaze is going brightly on top of the stone floor of the hearth. Thus far you are unseen. What do you do?

The fire burning on stone is concerning. I watch the maid and dog from my hidden location to see how they act. Unsure of whether the strength of the maid and war hound, I quietly wait to see if they are merely a pet and help or protectors of some sort. People do not hire me to take out a mark who is an easy target.

Seeing that everyone remains in the room, from outside the window, I cast Unseen Servant and have it knock a picture off of the mantle directly in front of the maid to see how the maid, dog, fire and mark react. If this mark is protected by something other than a mere dog, then it is beyond my current powers and I shall take careful note for my employer so that I can obtain the necessary equipment and backup to overcome the mark's defenses.

Upon seeing that the breaking picture surprised the maid, the dog, the mark and the monster in the fire, I remain hidden outside the window. Knowing from prior nights that the maid tends to put the dog out a little later in the evening, I stealthily move by the door and wait. When the dog is allowed out, I cast a Slumber Hex on it and then coup de gras it. I then wait for the maid to come back out to get the dog. When she comes to the door, I Slumber Hex her as well and quickly bind and gag her. Finally, I enter the house and hide, waiting for the mark. When he gets up from his chair to get his evening drink, I quickly Slumber Hex him well away from the fireplace and coup de gras him as well. Then I leave and slip into the pond and under the water behind his home where I shall remain for the day to avoid detection before returning to my employer the next night.

Wow, I guess I took too long making a character and missed my chance before the thread filled up. Ah well, was worth a try.

Indeed, that is a long list. I think you got plenty of people wanting to get in, so I withdraw my application/interest : )

I'd love a shot at this game, it sounds pretty amazing.

My submission. Felgrael Uviest, Dhampir Alchemist. I might go with an archetype although I haven't decided yet. Also if Dhampir is not cool, I would make him Human instead. I'll work up a full build if accepted.

Answer the following questions in whatever way you deem fit (In or out of character)

1. What can you bring to our organization?
As you can imagine, my skill set is ideally suited to dispatching targets with little outward evidence. Heart failure, food poisoning, any number of interesting and effective ways to die without raising a blade. Additionally, I can provide some necessary healing without all the strings attached to those of the faithful.

2. Why should we trust you?
Because you'd be paying me. Let's face facts, you're not looking to start a sewing circle of sweet old ladies. You're looking for unscroupulous people willing to kill discreetly for money. That sort doesn't breed trust naturally but as long as the gold is flowing, you have my trust and my services.

3. What future do you see with us?
Ideally a long one. Some of my experiments aren't cheap so a comfortable and steady flow of income would be excellent.

4. How religious are you?
I try to reserve my faith in things more scientific than miraculous. That being said I can't deny the powers of the churches so I tend to stay out of their way unless necessary.

5. Your target is sitting in his study smoking a pipe. Next to him is his prized warhound. Across from him his maid is quietly dusting the mantle of the well lit fireplace where a blaze is going brightly on top of the stone floor of the hearth. Thus far you are unseen. What do you do?
I enjoy a drink at a local inn. Having slipped a rather nasty delayed custom created poison into the man's food earlier that day, I enjoy my evening and wait to hear the news of his demise the following morning.

It's not too late as it's not friday yet and I have yet to make any announcements of slots.

There are going to be 5 slots. But only 5. If I were runnign an AP I'd consider two groups but as it isn't it'd be much more difficult to double up my work.

"I need no weapons, poisons or spells to carry out your tasks. The town guard could search me right now and find nothing. There are few things that allay suspicion like an unarmed man."

TarkXT wrote:
2. Why should we trust you?

"You mean, why do you trust me? You've invited me here, exposing a tiny sliver of your organization. That means you're studied me enough to know I won't turn you over to the Hellknights or diabolists in exchange for some small scrap of power. That means you know the reason why -- because they cannot give me what I want. I have to earn it."

TarkXT wrote:
3. What future do you see with us?

"One filled with long periods of thought and planning punctuated with brief bursts of violence. I see a chance to hone my skills and myself on the challenges you provide."

TarkXT wrote:
4. How religious are you?

"I want to sharpen my mind and body. The only way to do that - to really test the limits of what I can do - is to risk my life. Otherwise I won't know what my limits are and what I need to do in order to improve. From that comes my worship Gorum, but I'm hardly a zealot. You don't have to worry about what I might say in a confessional."

"A prized warhound requires special treatment and care, something a good owner handles personally. I know he's a good owner because the maid isn't afraid of the animal. That means it is well-fed, groomed and allowed to work out its aggression. I know he takes care of it because dogs form packs, and the owner must establish himself as leader for the beast to behave."

Titus raises his hand silently to ask for patience.

"I know you realize all that. The point is the study is a poor place to carry out an attack - too much light and foot traffic. A better place will be outside when the owner releases the hound to prowl the grounds for the night. That's the point of such an animal, after all. And to establish a good hierarchy, the target will likely do that himself. I just have to climb to a point on his walls where I can kill him quietly and quickly, then leave before the animal returns. A difficult task, but not impossible. And much easier than striking in the study."

The decision has been made! The following characters have been selected. Please make your way to the OOC thread to post full sheets and backstories by tuesday when I'll start the IC thread proper.

Winners:

Psyana Rashkar
Csiza
Lilith
Felgrael Uviest
Gethric Orted

The decision was exceedingly difficult there were many many strong candidates to choose from . Sadly however I needed only 5 and 5 is the number that sahll remain. Thank you all very much for applying. That being said I have a special gift for those who didn't make it. Just click on the spoiler below.

Consolation Prize:

THE SPOILER WAS TRAPPED!

1d20 + 100 ⇒ (5) + 100 = 105Attack Roll.
20d12 ⇒ (4, 9, 4, 10, 1, 7, 10, 10, 5, 10, 1, 9, 7, 11, 2, 10, 5, 9, 9, 12) = 145 Damage

As you click on the spoiler a million flaming posts fly at you and impale your character to the ground. As consciousness mercilessly slips away freeing you from the unending torment of life you can't help but wonder. Why did I not check for traps?

Dang it! was really lookin forward to this game, ah well.

Consolation Prize:

Thank goodness I'm a godly rogue, and auto detect all traps. I appreciate your desire to gift us who didn't make the cut, but in return, I drop three tons of bananas on your winning team, crushing them to death.

Time to choose a new 5. I'd strongly suggest one of them this time, so this doesn't happen again.

ROFLMAO!!!

Tark, ur cool people in my book! Thanks for the chance to at least apply!

Bang I'm Dead......Thanks for the consideration :)

"W-why?" Cyphus says, as he coughs up a cloud of blood. He falls to the ground, convulses violently for a moment and then falls silent. Oh, and he appears to have burst into flames.

That's a shame, but congrats to everybody that made it in!

'sall good. You may go ahead and collect your consolation prize.

Well for any of you that managed to survive the consolation prize I'd like to announce that recruitment is open once more. Sadly one of my players has sadly disappeared and now I must once more open the floodgates and ask for a replacement.

Please use the first post at the start of this thread as a guideline to submitting. If you have already submitted and wish to reapply please say so in this thread and I will add you to the consideration pot.

Thank you again and look forward to reading the applications.

OOH!! I would love to re-apply. Kheldor is another game, so I will need a new character...

What roles ya got filled and what left?

Would LOVE to play a game with the famous Tark.
Funnily enough I'd like submit a cavalier, however the opening page might require an alignment change or at least a different order.

Reading up now...

Duncan is done. I'll answer your questions you'd like, from the first page in this thread.

1. What can you bring to our organization?
Flexibility. There aren't too many Dwarves who worship a god of war with loose morals AND who can sneak as well as any thief.

2. Why should we trust you?
Because I don't give a damn about personal power. I'm here for conflict. People seem to think a follower of Gorum has to be in a warzone all the time. Not true. Wars can be started from a single assasination. Groups like yours don't hit nobody's. These peoples lives mean something. Mob bosses, officials, kings. Eliminating important people creates a mass of bloodletting as underlings seek to replace the fallen, grudges are created and scores are settled.

3. What future do you see with us?Who knows. As long as there is conflict surrounding your actions I am with you. If I lose interest, your obviously not as active as you make out and I'll find somewhere else more competent at backing up it's claims.

4.How religious are you? Very. But you'll find Our Lord in Iron is VERY flexible about how we serve him. As long as you foster conflict you'll find he and I willing to help. Oh, and don't worry about conversion. I ain't no preacher.

5. Your target is sitting in his study smoking a pipe. Next to him is his prized warhound. Across from him his maid is quietly dusting the mantle of the well lit fireplace where a blaze is going brightly on top of the stone floor of the hearth. Thus far you are unseen. What do you do?
Casts Invisibility The target first. Then the maid, then the dog. Shame about the dog. I'll hafta steal some stuff to make it look like a botched robbery. Casts Invisibility againSmash a widow, but go out the door.

Bumpity bump

Just posting to say we are still open.

As for roles? Well, we lost an oracle. But the party was fairly spellcaster heavy from the start. But so far we have:

Witch
Oracle
Ranger
Alchemist

So pretty much all the important bits covered. Play what feels right.

Already submitted Duncan Redhammer. Will also submit Vale Shadow Blade when I get tje cjance to have some proper sit down time today. He'll be a Half elf Rouge (Scout, Brute), Fighter (Weapon Master) multiclass going the Shatter defences line.

Char Concept:
Basically Vale is a Killer. Similar number of feats as a straight fighter, with a lot more stealth. You still work best as a flanker with someone else but are still very impressive on your own. Your main ‘Trick’ is to Intimidate for free (-2 to enemy attack, saves and skills) and later shatter defenses let you sneak attack without a buddy. You become a good debuffer once you get brutal Beating. He struggles with Concealment so needs goggles of true seeing. He can’t layer as many effects on SA so just pump AC.

Trick- Cornugan Smash means you intimidate foes you hit as a free action. Shatter defenses means you treat any demoralized foe as flat footed, so you can SA with no flank needed. It also denies dex so you'll be hitting a lower AC. Brutal Beating adds Sickened. So, on the initial TWP, you make a target shaken, sickened, Slow Reactions on the first hit, Offensive Defense with the offhand.

Backstory:

Backstory: Vale has been an outcast his nearly his whole life. Born to a human mage and an elven ranger he grew up with his parents in the woods near Sandpoint. His father had fallen in love with the human at a young age (for an elf) and forsook clan duty to live with her isolation. Vale’s Mother, Father and sister were all he had for a long time. Vale grew up following his father’s ways as best he could and while he became a very competent woodsman he preferred stealth and swordplay most of all. Always learning/hunting/sparring with his father or sister, he knew while a single warrior can be effective- warriors working in tandem were far more dangerous and that a foe taken by surprise rarely survives. He showed some talent for magic but never took enough interest for dedicated study beyond the cantrips his mother taught him.

After the death of his mother the family left the woods and moved to town where it would be safer for His father to raise his children. Called ‘half breed’ by the other children Vale and his sister got into frequent fights (which they won as often as lost depending on opposition numbers), This got the local sheriff’s attention who offered to further augment his father’s training, provided they both join the militia as scouts. This worked out well.

Vale has become a very competent scout and swordsmen, with knowledge of the wilderness and streets. He seeks every advantage in battle and while very brave avoids any fight that would be too costly. He prefers to eliminate the underlings before melee begins (they have a tendency to get in the way) and once open combat is joined will either continually charge around, killing as many opponents as possible or if needed linking with an ally to bring down the toughest opponent.

His tactics always focus on maximum damage, so he flanks as often as he can and uses Conrugan smash to intimidate his enemies (-2 to attack, saves, skills), Shatter Defenses (flat footed) to lower their AC.

I think seeing as your the only poster so far the second character is sounding a bit more like what they could use.

I plan on submitting a Halfling(maybe Fetchling) Rogue(or Ninja, can't remember if those are allowed), but I haven't had the time to write it up yet. If your in a hurry to get a replacement, grab STR, though I really, really want to play in this game.

TarkXT wrote:

Vale is built. Couldn't make the Fighter/Rogue synch though. Went with Urban Ranger instead.

Gear has to be done, but Stats and skills are complete.

All finished

Been awhile. Sorry guys. Made it into 2 more PbP and that makes 9.

That's about all I can handle.
Good gaming.

Well Monkeygod?

Yup - we are looking for one more victim, er, I mean player to join us in cheerfully slaying our way across Cheliax and the Inner Sea. Key attributes are a lack of a moral compass, sadistic nature, enjoyment of seeing blood on others, and a willingness to kill for money. Other attributes will be considered on their ability to make me laugh while redirecting my fellow players from inserting poison into my food.

Yea, still interested, will do up a Halfling or Fetchling Ninja. Might end up being done tomorrow though.

Dot me interested as well. Gotta read through the game a bit but leaning towards a redo of this Knife master that prefers to get up close and personal. He'll have a penchant for taking scalps ^_^

Character roughed in for review. Will take the time to spend the rest of his cash if/when he's accepted.

Now to answer some questions...

1. What can you bring to our organization?

Pure professionalism. Which is lacking if what Ive seen so far is standard. Otherwise a quick wit packed behind quicker steel.

2. Why should we trust you?

Hahaha! Good one.

3. What future do you see with us?

A long and prosperous one littered with the bodies of your enemies and fat with coin...well, as long as there is coin. How much am I being paid again?

4. How religious are you?

Im not. I believe in myself. Are we gonna debate philosophy or get to work?

5. Your target is sitting in his study smoking a pipe. Next to him is his prized warhound. Across from him his maid is quietly dusting the mantle of the well lit fireplace where a blaze is going brightly on top of the stone floor of the hearth. Thus far you are unseen. What do you do?

What any self respecting assassin would do. Bring you proof of a job well done. No plan lasts beyond the first move and after that opportunity dictates the action. But you know this already.

If you're still looking I'm interested. I applied last time, but sadly the explosive runes got my character I submitted.

Don't think we have made a decision yet, but put up an app soon as we are about to move forward.

1. What can you bring to our organization?
A stout bow and a keen eye.

2. Why should we trust you?
There are scores of reasons not to. All I can give is my word. Provide good money and a steady stream of work and I'll have no reason to betray you. Besides, I know my weaknesses. I'd rather be in a group that can cover for me in areas I'm weak in and deal with anyone I can't stand than be alone and hunted.

3. What future do you see with us?
Long and profitable, I just hope you see the same.

4. How religious are you?
I have no need for gods or fanatics. Just good coin.

5. Your target is sitting in his study smoking a pipe. Next to him is his prized warhound. Across from him his maid is quietly dusting the mantle of the well lit fireplace where a blaze is going brightly on top of the stone floor of the hearth. Thus far you are unseen. What do you do?
See if I can get the wood treated to burn hotter than normal. Pay the maid through a cutout to feign sick and turn in early. Wait for the mark to open the window then put an arrow in his heart. Nice, clean, and simple.

Additional Information:

I imagine Shadow to be quiet and blunt. She doesn't have the ability to project her personality as well as others, so she wouldn't talk much. She would be sure of herself in most situations, but would probably panic if faced with having to be in a social situation for a job. She is attractive, but she doesn't know how to use that advantage at all.

She can cook, and uses those skills when other work is scarce to get some money. Her other talents include skill with a bow, and nimble fingers to pick locks and disarm traps with.

Appearance:
Shadow would pass for a noble in looks, but not in bearing. She tends to keep her head down and her small size allows her to be mistaken for just another street urchin, until you see the wiry muscles cording and the intense gaze she scans the environment with. She wears her black hair in a simple, loose bun. Her eyes are an icy blue and noticeable enough that she tries to keep the hood of her cloak low when walking about. She is short, at 4 feet 8 inches, and light at 100 pounds.

Personality:
Shadow Can come across as meek and weak-willed because she keeps quite and rarely argues with anyone. She prefers to go along with the flow of things rather than fight. As a result, she tries to avoid social situations and keeps her distance. She isn't cruel, but she isn't nice either. She prefers clean, quiet kills from a distance. She also doesn't question why, figuring that if her employer wanted her to know, she'd be told, but she is not so trusting that she'll blindly go in, and prefers to get as much information as she can about her target herself before striking.

Background:
Shadow grew up fast on the streets. An orphan, and a young one at that, she would not have lasted long if she didn't. She began as a simple thief, but she moved up to the odd assassination job as her skill with the bow began to manifest. She learned to cook well as a way to keep earning money when she needed to keep a low profile, and had used it as a front to meet with more than one client. She has most of the hallmarks of a typical Chelish girl, the three deviations being her small size, her unusual strength, and her icy blue eyes.

Hm. I think I'll redot this for future reference.

I know I am leaving this until the last minute but I'll work on the background and personality of Dron until the closing date of tomorrow.

1. What can you bring to the organisation? Dron is a destructive force allied to a willingness to learn your ways.

2. Why should we trust you? Dron will be on a sabbatical from his Qadiran cult to foster stronger links within the greater network of killers. His coming is the repayment of an honourable favour and Dron will not let that down.

3. What future do you see with us? The favour will be repaid over one year. Beyond that is a matter for our superiors.

4. How religious are you? Dron is a deeply religious follower in Norgorber, almost brainwashed in his belief in the cause of the mercenary assassin.

DM - I would prefer him to be NE or LE in alignment to show his honourable side. Plus I need to find out more about the Qadiran trait and its influence on his background, but essentially he was either stolen or sold on to the black and brown of Norgorber. My copy of the Qadiran guide is not on holiday with me though. Should get access to it over the weekend.

5. Your target is sitting in his study smoking a pipe. Next to him is his prized warhound. Across from him his maid is quietly dusting the mantle of the well lit fireplace where a blaze is going brightly on top of the stone floor of the hearth. Thus far you are unseen. What do you do? A masked Dron walks in with something of value to the mark, throwing down a piece of poisoned steak for the dog. He orders everyone to say calm or the tied child/wife will be killed. Then the maid must pull down a curtain cord and tie the mark. Then lie face down by the fire.
Dron lets the child/wife have a final embrace with their kin, while they are busy he bends down and bites the throat of the maid. She becomes one less complication. Finally he pulls the others apart, puts the wife/child in another chair and reminds everyone of his oath unless everyone stays calm. The wife/child gets to watch him tear the throat out of his helpless mark.
Then he keeps his word and leaves the last alive, the wife or child alive. Her tongue and eyes must be burnt out of course.

I will work on the rest over the next day.

Do we know when a final decision is going to be made?

Nevermind, I just saw it's tomorrow. I would wish the others luck, but I'll think I'll leave an arrow in your backs instead.

Seriously though, good luck.

Congratulations Shadow! You may now report to the OOC channel for reeducation!

The rest of you may partake of the consolation prize above...
