what you know:

The creature was a Berbalang.

A Berbalang is a corporal undead similar to a ghoul but far more intelligent an deadly. They have bat wings which allow it to fly and a long tongue which can extent to strike a distant target. Their claws and tongue all have a potent poison that paralyses their foes.

Perhaps their most powerful ability is that a Berbalang enter a trance that separates the creature's spirit from its body. When it does so it leaves it's body behind and becomes incorporeal. While in wraith form a Berbalang loses his poison attacks but can drain life with a touch like a wraith. If the spirit is destroyed the Berbalang wakes up in his physical body and cannot wraith form again for 24 hours. While in wraith form it's physical body is helpless but gains the effect of a displacement spell. The wraith form cannot travel more than a mile from the physical body.

Berbalangs crave the life of the living but are ultimately all cowards. They will usually try to find lone prey but if faced with a group they will test their defences or wait until they are weakened before attacking themselves. In some cases a particularly hungry Berbalang might attack a powerful group but will rarely risk it's physical body and instead attack while in wraith form once a day to weaken them.

Any creature slain by a Berbalang turns into a ghoul in less than a minute.

Frost hoots a message into Valoren's ear. After which he looks up.

Everyone, Frost here reports that he saw a copse of lush, green-leafed trees to the north west of here. I am unsure how far it is, but it may be a good place to head towards to rest at. If nothing else, it may be worth checking out. Considering their is actual life there in this cursed place.

"I agree with Mr. Bug there, live in this supposed dead zone is interesting. Might be more fun to be had there."
