"Hate is a bit of a mild way to put it when you're talking about Daviren," Shara mutters. "Every goblin from here to Magnimar would be strung up if he had his way. And he's probably feeling rather vindicated after yesterday. It gave a lot of his hate for the little menaces justification." She nods to Aldern with a small smile and pokes her head inside. "Hosk? Hosk are you in? We need some horses from you."

The stables are rather well kept, in no small part to the handful of stablehands in Daviren's employ. A few of them are hard at work when you enter, either grooming the horses or keeping the floors clean. The strong scent of horse hangs heavy in the air, but such is more of an inevitability than anything. The aura of pure goblin hate does not seem as evident within the stables... at least until one takes a look at Daviren's "office."

Sitting at a table in a small corner room is the grizzled hunter himself, his brown hair and beard covered in flecks of gray. More goblin ears are pinned on the walls, but what stands out the most is the large jar sitting on the shelf behind him. Pickled in brine are what appear to be the bloated remains of a goblin, its face contorted into an expression of pure agony. Of course, out of more spite the poor creature's name has been proudly scrawled onto a label with large, easy to read letters - "CHIEF WHARTUS". Daviren stands from his desk, and with a slight limp, steps out of his office to greet his customers.

"I'll be. Miss Shara, is it?" the old hunter asks, his mouth turned into a crooked smile. When he sees exactly who is accompanying her, he lets out a harsh yet joyous laugh. "So the town heroes want to buy horses from me? Well I'd be happy to oblige! I'd buy you all a round of drinks, but that'll have to wait. I'm on the job, you see." Stepping further into the barn, he waves an arm at you. "Come along then! There're plenty enough horses to go around... have to take your pick, though. No fancy bloodlines here, or anything like that, but they're all hardy beasts, perfect for riding."

He glances at Aldern expectantly as he mentions this last bit, but the noble merely shrugs. "I suppose that would make your horses diamonds in the rough, then."

Daviren snorts in response, more or less pleased. Looking back at your group, Aldern holds an arm out toward the horses. "You are all free to take your pick! If you would pardon me for being presumptuous, none of you seem like the type to stay in Sandpoint forever. A good horse might prove useful for your travels."

Free light horses for everyone! I promise they won't get eaten by demonic wasps or anything. :P

"You might have to race everyone else in the bar to pay for the drinks first," Shara says with a chuckle. "Most of the town would probably love to buy the 'local heroes' a drink."

She looks over the horses and finds a chestnut colored mare with white specks along her flanks. She offers a hand to the horse, who sniffs it and tosses her head. "Do you have a side saddle?" she asks. "Riding a horse astride in a dress can be rather... uncomfortable."

Baalrak snorts when he enters the stable, looking with some admiration at the many goblin ears nailed to the walls. When they reach Mr. Hosk, he addresses the man. "You must be a mighty warrior to have so many goblin kills. Much respect to you."

He doesn't really acknowledge Aldern's generosity, striding right past the noble into the stablery to check out the selection - he finds the largest horse, a big brown brute who snorts in alarm at Baalrak's approach. With a few calm words, though, he calms the huge beast and approaches it, stroking its nose.

Ash frowns softly as he looks over the grim trophies. "Doesn't all of the dead goblins bother the horses... I would think they would be frightened by the... Scent."

Ivy still doesn't seem bothered by the trophies, and instead shouts "Silvie!" before darting back into the stables, predator eyes dillating slightly as she rushes into the room towards a fawns brindle patterned horse, then stops short as she hits the space between. "Not Sylvie." she says, pouting, but still moves towards the horse, offering a hand. "Still really pretty, though..." she offers.

Ash watches for a moment, then turns to Aldern. "How long are you expecting to keep the horses for?

"More modest, maybe," Daviren answers Shara, nodding toward the far wall, where some saddles hang off a rack. "I'm pretty sure I have one somewhere around here."

Turning to Baalrak, his mouth spreads into a smile. "Much appreciated. But I'd be lying if I said they were all mine. My own hunting days might be over, but there's always someone willing to continue my work. Especially when there's a bit of gold in it for them." Hearing Ash's question, he merely shakes his head. "Scent? Nah. Now if I strung up the bodies instead... The stable owner chuckles darkly. "...then the stench might get a bit unbearable. That's why ol' Whartus over there is pickling in a jar."

Thus far, Aldern seems to favor a painted mare. He does not look at Ash, but frowns in confusion when he hears his question. "Well, forever, really. Or for as long as you want them, I suppose."

As they walk into the stables, Wyrd looks over the collection of goblin ears and the pickled goblin and stifles a chuckle. No doubt Daviren had it in for the little buggers, and Wyrd couldn't blame him. After all, they were a source of nothing but trouble for travelers in the region. He gives a nod to Daviren, and thanks Aldern for the mount.

He walks further in and begins to look at the horses, not entirely sure why they needed to pick one up, but not exactly willing to pass either. He wanders through the stables looking for a horse and settles on a sturdy but unremarkable brown stallion. He looks it over once, and satisfied, pats it on the side.

"This fellow will do nicely," he says as he guides him out.

Double checking the sin counter: Taking the lead with Wrath is Daviren with 257.3

As everyone gets acquainted with their mounts of choice, Aldern and Daviren move over to the latter's office to talk business. They haggle over the cost of the horses for a few short minutes before shaking hands. A small but hefty sack of platinum changes hands, and moments later the two of them are out again. Aldern flashes you all a smile and a thumbs up as Daviren procures some saddles for you, including the variant requested by Shara. While the horses were all purchased, the old hunter insists that you take the saddles for free, especially since they are a little worn.

"The least I could do for Sandpoint's newest goblin slayers!" he says as you depart, laughing boisterously, "Don't forget! I always have room for more goblin ears! You could turn it into a profession!"

"Quite the interesting fellow!" Aldern simply remarks as you ride away. He points you toward the Sandpoint Bridge, the town's southern point of entry.

"You might know the way already, Shara! Tickwood is not too far from here, a mile or so. Not a terrible distance, but the terrain is unfavorable. Bad enough perhaps to justify ah, Bastus, here." He gives his newly acquired steed a pat on the head, but the mare merely snorts with indifference. Aldern pays it no mind. When you reach the bridge, he takes one last moment to inventory things. "Now let's see... horses, check... rapier..." He gives his belt a pat. "...check... menservants... bah, who needs them?

Shara:
Indeed, Tickwood is a mere mile-and-a-half away, just north of the Devil's Platter.

The small forest so-named for the giant ticks that inhabit it. Their size is often exaggerated by people in Sandpoint, leading many to outright avoid the place, though in reality they are not terribly common. Resident predators aside, it is a relatively safe hunting ground.

"All right, everything is in order! Everybody ready to head on out?"

Smaller group, so should I adopt the rule of three two for moving things on? Ivy doesn't get a vote, though. :P

Shara gets the saddle in place on the horse and straps her ranseur to the side before climbing up and getting into position. She flattens her skirts and settles in properly before they ride off. She looks perfectly comfortable riding side saddle, at ease even. "Daviren's always been a bit like that. His hate for the goblins is almost as legendary as Uncle Quinn's tall tales."

She smirks, deciding to see if she can tease Aldern a bit. "Of course I do. It's just north of the Devil's Platter. The terrain's not all that rough, though people always seem to hate going through there. I suppose the giant ticks are a bit of a problem for most people." She smiles. "But surely a gentleman like yourself can handle himself through a few large bugs." She taps her horse's side. "Shall we press on? It would be quite a pain to try to bring the boar back too late tonight."

Ivy's nose crinkles up at the mention of large ticks. She seems rather... displeased with the notion. One of the few things that seems to have bothered her so far. But that doesn't stop her from going along with the group. While Ash does climb on the horse, Ivy walks nearby. The promise of not-all-that-rough terrain giving her reason to look forward to being the best climber.

"What else should we worry about in the area? Anything native to the area other than boars, wolves, and bugs? Any horror stories?"

The hunting party sets out, crossing the Sandpoint Bridge and starting down the Lost Coast Road. Already knowing the way to Tickwood, Shara takes the lead, with Aldern riding by her side. In no particular rush, you take a leisurely pace as you leave the town's outskirts.

"Ah, the Sandpoint Devil. I've heard stories about that one," Aldern remarks with a wry grin. "There are all sorts of collectors in Magnimar that would love to see it stuffed and added to their collections. Not that they would hunt it down themselves, mind you. They have gold to throw around for that!

"Alas, should we cross paths with it, I would not think less of any of you for turning to flee. Assuming it is real, of course. It could be someone's drunken delusion, for all I know."

Hearing Ash's question, he glances over his shoulder, not quite looking at the half-elf. "Well, it's just hearsay, but there are supposedly fey living deep in the woods. Deeper than I intend to go, at least - they are not creatures I would care to trifle with."

Don't feel like you have to skip any in-character discussion on my account! ;P

I'll move us along to the forest as soon as I get my hands on my book, but I'll probably split the timelines for during/after the trip there.

"Well, a good hunt is one way of keeping one's mind off things," Aldern answers, his grin fading, "Such as say, being caught unawares during a goblin raid." The smile is back on his face almost as quickly as it vanished. "Ah, my apologies. I should not linger on such things! I suppose that if it were not for the goblins, I would not have met such fine folks as yourselves!"

Sense Motive DC 19:
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
The question seems to have made Aldern tense; he is not lying, but he is being rather evasive. His abrupt changes in mood seem genuine, in any case.

At Baalrak's proclamation, he lets out a harsh laugh. "The lord-mayor once said something similar while we were having drinks together. Only I suspect you wouldn't be satisfied with it unless you slew the beast yourself, hm?"

"Every now and then some fool brings in a strange-looking beast, claiming that it is the legend itself. A few of them genuinely believed it, I wager. The more craven ones made their own monstrosities out of assorted animal parts. All for fame and gold, of course."

Wherein I demonstrate my geographic ineptitude. :P

At Aldern's insistence, you take the scenic route. From the Lost Coast Road you take a detour onto an old farm road, following the southern banks of the Turandarok River. You ride east, skirting the northern edge of the Devil's Platter, while passing by a range of broken hills on the other side of the river known as Ravenroost. Within thirty minutes you come upon a stretch of river shallow enough to ford with your horses, taking you right to the foot of the Tickwood.

While rather small compared to Sandpoint's other nearby forests, Tickwood boasts some redwoods of rather impressive size. From where you stand, there is clear evidence that some of these trees have been cut down in the past.

"Ah, here were are!" Aldern proclaims, taking a moment to appreciate the sight. Along the way he had seemed content say nothing at all. "Let's find us a big, juicy boar! Big enough to feed, ah..." He quickly takes count of everyone present, stopping halfway through to start over again, this time skipping over Ash and Ivy. "...well, four of us."

Survival DC 12:
Numerous game trails lead into the forest, indicating where generations of fauna have picked the ground clean. On one of these trails you spot areas where soil has been turned over, as well as faint hoofprints - no more than a few hours old.

Ivy darts around as she sees several worn paths within grass, soil, and foliage. She takes her time at each, sniff-sniffing the air nearby, and staring at for all intents-and-purposes empty spaces. Then she reaches down to a spot right next to a track and picks up a little bit of dirt and stuffs it into her mouth, before nodding. "This way!" she calls excitedly as she follows the trail into the woods, not wasting any time at all in following the creature's failure to hide itself.

Then, he remembers that he doesn't actually know what it is that makes up a wyvern, so he begins to just weave a story. "They can shoot poisonous needles out of their tail, and breathe fire out of all five of their heads! They have bodies the size of an elephant and thick, leathery skin to match!" he claims. "They hunt the Hold of Belzken for weak orcs to fall prey into their traps."

Ivy just lost a rank in Knowledge(Arcana) that she didn't even have.

"Good work! With my hound dead, I was worried that we'd have more trouble picking up a trail!" Aldern remarks happily.

Your party ventures into the forest, following the game trail. A thick canopy ensures that there is an abundance of shade, but enough sunlight shines through to illuminate your path. The forest is quiet, save for the occasional birdsong from somewhere up in the trees. You spot the occasional deer, but they are quick to run off the moment they are noticed. Your horses pay their fellow ungulates no heed, simply plodding along at your behest.

The trail meanders somewhat, and even seems to disappear entirely after a few hundred feet, but for a forest dweller like Ivy, following along is child's play. Tickwood is, after all, significantly smaller than the Mierani. Within ten minutes, your quarry comes into view, standing in a small clearing. The boar is a compact, but heavyset creature. It continues along the very trail you have been using at a snail's pace, practically burying its snout into the ground, apparently oblivious to its surroundings..

"Ah, what good fortune," Aldern whispers with a wide grin, slowly drawing his rapier from its sheath. "So what do you all think? Do we go in quietly, or do we let it give us a good chase?"

Baalrak crouches low on his horse's back (who he's decided is called Brash) and eyes the horse. His hand goes to his greatsword's hilt. "We should kill it as quickly as we can, lest it escape." he murmurs. "A horse should outrun a boar, but that risks our transportation."

His eyes flick to Wyrd... Grim... Grimwyrd. His brother. "What say we pincer it?" he says. "One from each side."

"Boars are dumb." Ivy says quietly as she levels her glaive towards it. "If we go to the sides and you make it mad, we can stab it when it runs at you. Don't know if the tree branch is good for that though." Her hips slowly swish back and forth in her crouched position, like a cat ready to pounce. "Just have to run away in a straight line. So don't drink too much first."

Ivy, in her own way, suggests all the brace-able spears be utilized as part of an ambush to absolutely ruin this thing's life by making it angry enough to charge someone.

Aldern strokes the stubble on his chin. "Taking advantage of its aggressiveness... clever! I suppose I am used to everyone just chucking their spears, hoping that they hit something."

If you're all going with this plan (they don't sound mutually exclusive), I'll need some Stealth checks for you to get on the boar's sides without it noticing. Also whether you're on horses, off horses, etc.

I'll have a map of the clearing up soon...ish.

Put up a link for the current map (yeah, a bit big for a "small clearing" :P). For the sake of reference, the trail you've been following runs left to right. Since I'm bad at setting starting positions, I am gonna make things complicated! Starting from any point behind the red line, place yourself as far as a stealthy double move can take you.

"Come, brother." says Baalrak, quietly, as he slips off his mount. "Let me show you how the warriors of the Hold of Belzken do it."

Then he takes off towards the boar, trying to circle around it. His sword is half-unsheathed and he pads his feet as quietly as he dares.

Having settled on a plan, the party splits into two groups and advance in a bid to surround the boar. Aldern chooses to accompany Baalrak, his rapier drawn. Shara remains behind, just outside of the clearing, and out of their quarry's line of sight. The boar's ears twitch as you move around the edges of the clearing, but it initially seems oblivious to your presence.

That is, until a twig snaps beneath one of Wyrd's feet. Against the idyllic forest backdrop, a small bomb might as well have gone off. The boar's head jerks upward and right away, the animal spots the majority of the party with its beady eyes. Instead of turning to flee however, the beast stands its ground and emits a sound that could only be described as a low roar.

Surprise Round

"It seems that our jig is up! Let's go in for the kill, shall we?!"

Paying the creature's warning no heed, Aldern darts forward, giving his rapier a flourish as he stops short of the boar. The angry little creature turns its eyes right to the noble, who had up till that moment been one of the few to escape its notice. There is a look of menace on his face as he slowly draws circles in the air with the tip of his sword.

"Ah, it's been too long since the last time I've been on a good hunt! Now you silly beast, let's see what you've got!"

Shara is up.

Shara sighs and rolls her eyes. "Men. Always eager to show of their... masculinity." She calls up her magic power, ready to intervene if Aldren is about to get himself badly hurt.

Ready an action to cast sleep on the boar if it tries to kill Aldern or charges in Shara's direction.

Just to clarify, since sleep has a 1 round casting time, the most you could do is ready an action to start half of the casting. You can modify your action though!

Round One

"Here I come!" Aldern bellows, charging forward with his rapier outstretched. The narrow blade hits home, splitting open a shallow wound on the boar's side, eliciting a grunt of pain. His reckless charge however, leaves him wide open.

Aldern Rapier Charge: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 9 + 2 = 17
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Aldern charges the boar for 4 damage.

"No!" Ivy and Ash shout in unison as he rushes forward... preventing the plan from even being possible. In fact, neither of the pair can even reach the boar. This was going very, very poorly already.

Ash places a hand on Ivy and transforms some of her vines into solid bark, as the pair begins moving forward. The concentration of the spell leaving him behind. Put's Ivy's AC at 17.

"Hey stupid Boar-Boar! Over here!" shouts Ivy as she crosses the intervening space, hoping to draw its attention away from removing Aldern's intestines. Even still her instincts ensure she leaves space for Baalrak to run in... and for her to move to circle the prey.

Ivy attempts to draw the boar's attention away from Aldern, but her taunts do not seem to register. In retaliation for its wound it abruptly headbutts the vulnerable noble's gut, knocking the air out of him, before rearing its head back and goring him with its tusks. Blood is drawn, but Aldern is able to pull away. He nurses the fresh wound with his free hand, still wearing a painfully forced smile.

Boar Gore Attack vs. Aldern: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Baalrak roars in outrage that the noble had gotten there first and takes off across the clearing, his sword leaping into his hand. The battered, chipped blade raises up high as the Belzken warrior runs, and his vision narrows to only the boar.

"MINE!", he shouts.

Wyrd sighs as he sees Aldern charge the boar, wondering it the man has a death wish. He moves quickly alongside Ivy and Ash, closing on the boar as quickly as he can manage.

Double move to close with Boar

I know you said "literally nothing," but I didn't want to just skip over you. ;P

Shara is up.

Female Human Arcanist (Blood Arcanist)/Fighter 1 | HP: 10/10 | AC: 13, Touch 12, Flat-Footed 11 | CMD: 15 | Fort: +2, Reflex: +2, Will +2 | Init: +2 | Perception: +5 | Arcane: 4/4, Stamina: 1/1 | 1st: 3/3

Shara sighs as the men throw themselves all over the boar. "I suppose I should be ready if they manage to hurt themselves." She clears her throat and lets her power build.

Ready action to use ear-piercing scream if someone looks like they're about to take a serious injury.

Baalrak's blade falls onto the boar's thick back, cutting through bone, fat, muscle, and sinew, but just stopping short of any vital organs. Regardless, the wound is a bloody mess. The boar lets out a cry of pain, sounding more like a domestic pig than a ferocious beast.

Round Two

"Take that, you stupid pig!" Aldern shouts angrily, still clutching his wound. With a powerful, well-aimed thrust, he runs his rapier right through the boar's body, drawing a large spurt of blood. For any other animal the blow might have been the coup de grace, but through its sheer tenacity the boar remains on its feet, still sluggishly showing signs of aggression, even as it bleeds to death.

Aldern Rapier Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Between Baalrak and Aldern, the boar takes 28 damage. It is now critical, staggered, and dying.

Ash & Ivy are up.

On kindle, so can't move. But... Ivy will abuse diagonals to move around the boar into a position to flank with Baalrak, and Ash will double move to put himself two spaces north and one east of the boar, allowing him to flank with both Aldern and Wyrd, provided he moves to either the opposite space, or the space two south of the boar! Flanking with reach is fun!

Ash moves forward to put himself into a more offensive position, realizing that downing the boar, at this rate, is better than healing Aldern. Probably. Meanwhile Ivy rushes forward on two legs and an arm, skidding in a tight circle before lunging at the boar from the opposite side of Baalrak... But she's overzealous in her excitement.

GG :3 attack (Flank): 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 2 = 11
GG :3 damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Ivy's attack is indeed overzealous, but fortunately the boar is in no condition to dodge such extravagance. Her glaive-guisarme leaves a large gash along the boar's flank, staining more of its fur red. But still, the boar seems unfazed.

The boar wheezes as it lowers its head, apparently readying its tusks for another attack... but the attack never comes. Having apparently bled to death while still standing, it collapses on the spot.

Ivy hits the boar for 9 damage. The boar then dies from bleed damage on its turn.

Combat Over

"Bah!"

With a sneer Aldern skewers the boar carcass with his rapier, giving it several twists before pulling it back out. Letting out a huff, he starts to wipe the blood off his blade, paying his wound no mind. After a moment he seems to calm down.

"Well, that went a little messier than I expected!" he proclaims, grinning weakly at everyone standing around the boar, "Still, good work everyone! It never stood a chance!"

"Well that was fairly simple," Shara says, striding into the clearing. "I suppose an ordinary animal isn't really much of a challenge for a full team of trained fighters. Nicely done everyone." She examines the body from a distance, not interested in getting blood and guts all over her dress. "Hmmm, I suppose we'll need to find a way to get it hooked up to bring it back to Sandpoint."

"Mine!" Ivy says, though whether mocking Balraak, or simply imitating him is... questionable. Most likely Ivy doesn't understand mocking.

"Very dangerously, actually. Remember, we were going to ambush it, not charge it. Hunting with your head is a better way to survive, than with your heart." Ash says, chidingly, though it's clear he has the noble's interests at heart, given that he sends out a refreshing wave of energy.
